NeoLemmix V12.4 - stable new-formats release
« on: January 21, 2018, 02:18:23 PM »
After about 5 months of testing, I think the new-formats version of NeoLemmix is ready to be released as a stable player.

If you not yet have a new-formats player, then please download the attached installer (version 1.1), make sure you have internet connection and run the installer. It will download the main game (in the version available on the NeoLemmix homepage), editor and styles together with a few example level packs.
Alternatively you can download the same stuff directly here:
- The player, editor, ...: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p9a6iewz4841039/NeoLemmix_Full_2018-10-21.zip?dl=1
- All the new styles: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rzea4tapto1kr72/styles_2018-10-21.zip?dl=1
This contains NeoLemmix V12.4, the Editor V1.11, the Pack Toolit V1.6 and the GraphicsTool V1.3. It no longer contains the conversion tools for old styles and level packs. If you need them, they are still available on the NeoLemmix homepage.

There are still some missing features and originally I wanted to implement at least some of them before the first stable release, but sometimes there is a slighty difference between wish and reality. The main ones are:
1) No automatic download of missing graphic styles, but you have an installer instead, that automatically download them.
2) No shimmier and no jumper skill yet.
3) No exits with resticted number of lemmings allowed to enter.
4) No terrain piece grouping for level creators.

EDIT 2018-10-21: The links in this first post now point to the latest version again.

IchoTolot found a critical teleporter bug. This should be fixed in the attached version 12.0.1. I will update the first post in a moment.

Here is another update to NeoLemmix, now version 12.1.0.

For a full new start, please download:
- The player, editor, etc...: https://www.dropbox.com/s/d4uw6zqwy45yjxx/NeoLemmix_Full_2018-02-18.zip?dl=1
- All the styles: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7kl2dyfdyx460zd/styles_2018-02-18.zip?dl=1

If you just want to upgrade from version 12.0.0 or 12.0.1, then download the attachement.

New features:
- Lots of new styles by Flopsy, GigaLem, Proxima, SQron and others.
- Hatches and preplaced lemmings display helper icons during the first two seconds of the game.
- Custom panel sprites are now properly loaded.
- Fixed bug: Trigger point of flipped receivers was off by 1 pixel.

Thanks Nepster! Also big thanks to Wafflem for his work on converting my styles.

However, there is a caveat -- I need to do some modifications to the Minesweeper style before I consider it ready for inclusion in NeoLemmix. So please don't use this style until further notice, as levels created with the current version may break.

EDIT: Nepster has removed this style from the download. Thank you 8-) I'll set aside time to fix this style so it can be released as soon as possible.

Ray_spooky in the styles download has pretty much the whole tileset missing apart from 2 objects.

I had to redeem this tileset from the Lemmings Halloween 2017 pack download for the MegSEGAbytes level using this tileset.

I'm reporting this in case it's a genuine mistake :)

One thing:

Before the first 2 links with

-  The player, editor
-  All the new styles

There should first be a link where everything is included: player, editor + styles

That would lead to new users getting these with their first download, even when that download is a lot bigger then.

It happened very often until now that I heard someone getting errors that was caused by simply missing the styles download. Of course the user thinks he/she only needs player and editor!

So: all-in-one download first for the everyday user, after that the pieces for the ones that know exactly what they need.

This also goes for the website of course. ;)

<Nepster> I can see where you are coming from, but there are two problems:
<Nepster> 1) Now it's easier for me to update the styles pack, even if there are no other changes in the player, editor, ...

If that is any easier at all, your deploy needs better automation. :lix-glare:

<Nepster> 2) People can download the styles pack and only extract some of the styles, which speeds up the installation.

The first answer to this is that 2) is not a counter-argument to the all-in-one download; it's unrelated. The all-in-one would be the union of everything that people are now instructed to download separately. Both the all-in-one archive and the separate style archive would allow to extract only some styles.

The second answer is that error prevention comes first, performance second. You silently lose newbies with easy fatal errors. Make the all-in-one. A big point of loose files is that you can compose an archive that plays some levels and can edit some levels. It needn't be all styles.

The third answer is that your concern dovetails into dependency management design (that issue almost arose in the topic about the bloated music directory). This is very interesting and I'm looking forward to how you solve it long-term.

From Lemmini Reunion:

Quote from: chrisleec728
Unfortunately I haven't used NeoLemmix in a little while because the more recent update made it WAY more complicated than it used to be.

Lemmini is 1. download engine, 2. download pack. (Optional: Have your files eaten, but let's be generous and not count this as a downside that could scare away newbies because eating files happens after you were able to play once.)

If NL is any more complicated than 1. download engine, 2. download pack, something has gone horribly wrong. This is as high as anybody is willing to jump to enter the culture. As long as the tiles don't come automatically, you must ship them with the main download.

And the NL homepage (page! not site!) needs one big friendly large green button that you can click and get everything.

I mean, I suppose I could figure it out eventually if I knew exactly which questions to ask and how to phrase them. I just figured perhaps I was just an idiot when it came to these things (which would most likely be my own fault).

Yeah, I totally know that the current situation is far from ideal. But unfortunately I am already struggling with keeping up on the bug fixes and therefore don't have time to implement such really important features like auto-downloading styles.
At the moment I am cobbling together a small installer that will download the two zip files from the NeoLemmix homepage and extracts them on your computer. That will hopefully be far faster than implementing the auto-downloading feature in the NeoLemmix player.

My NeoLemmix Player displays V12.01.00 instead of V12.1.0, even after downloading the latest version.

This is fine, there isn't really a difference between those version numbers.

.1 and .01 are the same because we would usually denote the difference between .1 and .10 if that were the case.

Don't worry I can assure you that despite that numbering you have the latest version :)

After almost two months it is time for another NeoLemmix update.

To ugrade from the version 12.1.0 (2018-02-18):
Delete the style "arty_underwater" (to replace with the up-to-date version), download the attached upgrade zip file and extract it over your existing NeoLemmix folder.

Changes:
NeoLemmix installer V1.0
This installer simplifies setting up the game: It downloads the game, editor, ... together with all the styles from the NeoLemmix homepage and extracts them into the proper folders. It also downloads some packs: DoveLems, PimoLems, Lemmings Reunion, Deceit's Lemmings and NepsterLems.
Interestingly using the installer is a lot faster than manually extracting everything. On my computer is finishes after three minutes of heavy work.
If someone wants to have their pack added to the auto-download in the installer, please contact me. The only requirement is to have a fixed url where to download the pack from: Either on some homepage (like the NeoLemmix homepage) or on dropbox. Just having a forum attachment is much discouraged, because updating the attachment will almost certainly change the url and thus break the installation.

NeoLemmix player V12.2.0
- Fixed bug: Rotated one-way-walls now use the correct game physics.
- Fixed bug: Disallow overlapping preplaced blockers.

Styles:
- Full update of arty_underwater
- New style arty_silhouette
- Modified LemPlus styles created by GigaLem
- Many new styles by Johannes (Droidlings), juanjo and Plom

NeoLemmix editor V1.8
- Improved copy&paste using now the clipboard. This allows copying stuff from one level to another one, even in a second editor.
- Piece selection can be moved with the mouse wheel, if the cursor is on the lower part of the editor.
- Added piece sizes to the tooltip at the piece selection.
- Fixed bug: Postview texts are now saved correctly.
- Fixed bug: Rotated gadget sizes are now loaded correctly.

Pack toolkit V1.4
- Added buttons to move levels up/down a rank.
- Custom sprite images change when scrolling up and down the combo-box.
- Saving custom panels is now possible.
- Fixed major bug: Saving twice now does not eat your files any more.
- Fixed bug: Removed talisman ID collisions.

NeoLemmix Introduction Pack and Lemmings Redux should be included IMO. Probably also at least one pack that makes use of NeoLemmix features; Lemmings Plus Omega may be a good candidate, as it uses most (not quite all) of the features but isn't overly hard for the most part.

NeoLemmix Introduction Pack: Last info I had was, that Nessy is working on it, but it is far from finished. At least the new-formats version is...
Lemmings Redux: I asked Proxima yesterday, and he said that it still needs work - at least it needs to be converted to new-formats.
LemPlus packs: I wasn't sure whether any of exists as a stable new-formats version yet. If they do, please tell me (possibly specifying which ones) and I will include them in the auto-download.

I second the "Redux" suggestion as it is one of the suggested packs to play first on the "Welcome" forum. (The other one, "Reunion", is already on there.)

Also, as far as custom music goes, are we supposed to somehow customize this ourselves using the "README"? It looks like right now all of the packs default to the "original" and "ohno" tracks.

I totally agree with you there: As soon as the redux pack is available for the new-formats, it will be included.

I forgot to add the music download for Lemmings Reunion, because it is a separate download. This will be fixed soon. Deceit's Lemmings, PimoLems and DoveLems don't have custom music (as far as I am aware), and I removed them from NepsterLems due to copyright problems.

The only packs of mine which haven't gotten an official new formats conversion (and won't be getting one, at least from me) are:
- NeoLemmix Introduction Pack; since I'm no longer managing it
- Lemmings Plus Flashbacks I and II; they've been replaced with Lemmings Plus Compressed, which serves the same purpose and has mostly the same levels as the two Flashback packs combined, with a few tweaks and the addition of some LPV and LPO2 levels. This might also be a good one to consider including, perhaps instead of (rather than as well as) Omega.

All Lemmings Plus packs from III onwards have custom music, which is included in their downloads. There is some overlap; if two packs have a music file with an identical name, the files should be identical too - this is relevant in the case of the two Omega packs (which contain some music from LPIII, and almost all music from LPIV and LPV, respectively, along with one original track each), as well as LPIV which uses one LPIII music. Note that all Lemmings Plus packs, wherever custom music is used, it's in a subfolder of the music folder. NeoLemmix itself supports this, but the editor / Flexi / etc currently do not - make sure the downloader does, or it will break custom music on those packs (although I suspect the downloader couldn't care less about the contents of the files; and simply downloads and extracts some ZIPs; knowing you, probably with a few safety features such as not being able to overwrite EXE files).

What I noticed: On neolemmix.com under "Official Game Conversions" only the old nxp format is linked.

I remember that there were already new format versions of the original games. I think these should be linked there instead + maybe including the original games with the player download as well. ???

Here is V1.1 of the NeoLemmix installer:
- Fixed some issues, e.g. Nessy's latest update to the zip files on the NeoLemmix homepage broke the old installer.
- Added all LemPlus packs to the auto-download.
- Added the music packs for Lemmings Reunion and PimoLems to the auto-download.

The NeoLemmix website now points to the new format versions of all official packs. You can download from the website or from this thread which basically pulls it from the website.

Also, is the Genesis level "No hurry, relax" still solvable? It seems that the top edge now appears to be deadly which makes that level (and possibly others) seem impossible now.

Oh dear goodness I completely forgot that some Genesis levels used the ceiling in the solution :( :( :(

"No hurry, relax" is solvable in NL without anyone touching the ceiling. We should, however, fix the level for Redux to make the left-side solution a more plausible red herring (even though it fails).

"Lemmings' Ark" requires a ceiling fix; this was already fixed in Redux, so you may just want to grab the Redux version of the level.

Ok, I have now completed both "No hurry" and "Lemmings' Ark" since they have both been fixed (thanks to Nessy), but now the checkmarks on all of the other "Extra" levels I've completed have turned from green to orange. Do I basically have the option of completing them again in order to change that?

If you have replays (even the auto-saved ones suffice for that), then you can just run the mass replay checker on that folder (F7 on the main menu) and all the checkmarks will turn green again.

PS: If you have further questions or find bugs in levels, please make a new thread for them (either in NeoLemmix Main or in Bugs&Suggestions). This thread is mainly for introducing new NeoLemmix versions, and if I need to find something then properly named threads are far easier for me to find than questions in this thread.

It is time for another NeoLemmix update. By now you should know the drill: The first post has links to the full NeoLemmix download, while attached to this post is a zip file for the update from version 12.2. (released April 22).

Changes:
NeoLemmix player V12.3.0
Physics Changes
- Preplaced blockers may no longer overlap
- Receivers turn blockers into walkers, if the resulting blocker would overlap with an already existing blocker
- Receivers can only be paired with one teleporter. If multiple teleporters point to the same receiver, this one is duplicated.
Bug-fixes
- Fixed bug: Skill usage now counts correctly for talismans.
- Fixed bug: Splitters are now displayed correctly.
- and a few more very minor bugs.

Styles:
- Some new styles by Flopsy
- Some new styles by Gronkling (converted by Wafflem)
- Lots of updates on GigaLem's objects

NeoLemmix editor V1.9
- Added cancel button when asking whether to save upon exiting the editor
- Esc no longer quits the editor, only secondary windows
- Improved zooming: It now tries to zoom in at the original mouse position on the level
- Added small gray borders around the level
- Background on piece selection now updates on changing the main style
- With grid usage, holding Ctrl moves pieces by only one pixel.
- Fixed bug: Paths are no longer stripped from music files
- Fixed bug: Reset pairing for duplicated/copied teleporters/receivers
- Added hotkey F9: Toggle grid usage
- and a few more minor changes

Pack toolkit V1.5
- Corrected default credits for scroller.

People have found some nasty bugs, so here is a hotfix. The first post is already updated.

Changes:
NeoLemmix player V12.3.1
- Lemmings now spawn from receivers at the correct frame again

NeoLemmix editor V1.10
- Changing level sizes is possible again
- Zooming with the mouse even works at the very beginning
- Editor opens even if no styles are present

NeoLemmix Installer V1.1
- The installer can now reach the NeoLemmix homepage again

PS: Be aware that Nessy needs a bit of time to put everything on the NeoLemmix homepage. So please wait for a bit until you use the installer - otherwise you will still download the old version.

Even this is not fixed. If I load such a level and save it, without doing anything else, the path gets stripped. When loading, the path does display correctly in the editor (it just doesn't save again correctly), but this was already true on previous versions.

Tested and confirmed this is true for both V1.09 and V1.10. Is it possible the fix was accidentally reversed prior to release?

Given the major bugs found in the Graphics Tool, I deem it useful to release an hopefully improved version of it right away. So here is version 1.3.

(Over)Time for another release version of NeoLemmix. Sadly no shimmier yet, but lots of fixed bugs (that I should have release quite a while ago).

As usual I attached a zip file for updating from version 12.3.1.
If you use the installer, then please give Nessy some time to upload everything to the NeoLemmix homepage, before running the installer.
Important: Please delete the old styles "gronkling_angelisland", "gronkling_chaosangel", "gronkling_cybertrack" and "gronkling_technobase" manually!

Changes:
NeoLemmix player V12.4
- Improved level title screen
- Scroller on the main menu works again, after hibernating since the first new-formats release.
- Physics-change: When a lemming falls onto a pixel which is both solid and water, the water always takes precedence now.
- Fixed last explosion frame
- Fixed some crashes
- Renamed some styles from "gronkling_..." to "sonic_..."
- The option "smooth resampling" is no longer the default.

NeoLemmix Editor V1.11
- Don't draw background color in clear-physics mode
- Allow more music file types, e.g. ".mod", ".xm" or ".wav"
- Allow titles up to 40 characters and author names up to 32 characters
- Allow resizing multiple objects at the same time, if they already have the same size
- Fixed bug: Still draw all objects, even if the terrain layer is switched off
- Fixed some crashes

NeoLemmix Pack Toolkit V1.6
- Added Replace-button for levels
- Improved folder browser to select the pack to load resp. to select the place to save the pack to
- Fixed some bugs that prevented saving packs
- Fixed bug: Saving custom sprites works now

Thanks, Nepster! I can now proceed with my conversions of Gronkling's remaining tilesets!

Also, the level preview screen looks a lot better now! I think I'll be able to live with that long term. Maybe we could still find some use for the remaining lines, though, since both the info about the release rate as well as about the time limit (if infinite) is gone from the preview screen now. With the rank name being presented right beneath the level title, there is really a lot of excess space for talisman info, more than needed for the average talisman (can you even type that many lines when defining a talisman? :D ), and certainly more than needed for the average level, since talisman levels are always going to be in the minority.

Would it be possible to just add the option of a custom text field below the standard information of number of lemmings and save requirement? A lot of people seem to "abuse" the talisman field anyway to just provide random additional information on the level :D . At least that's what I think when I see all these random names that Flopsy gave to his SEB Lems talismans... :P And he still had enough space underneath those talisman titles to explain the actual criteria to get the talisman!
My packs so far:
Lemmings World Tour (New & Old Formats), my music-themed flagship pack, 320 levels - Let's Played by Colorful Arty
Lemmings Open Air, my newest release and follow-up to World Tour, 120 levels
Paralems (Old Formats), a more flavour-driven one, 150 levels
Pit Lems (Old Formats), a more puzzly one, 100 levels - Let's Played by nin10doadict
Lemmicks, a pack for (very old) NeoLemmix 1.43 full of gimmicks, 170 levels

I think you're misunderstanding how talismans work nowdays. Similar to PSN or XBL achievements, each talisman has a name (which, like a level name, is completely arbitrary), which is limited to one line. The description of the talisman's requirements is not entered by the user, it's automatically generated. This has been the case since the move to new-formats.

Is anybody having trouble auto-downloading the Lemmings Plus series along with the other packs?

Yes, I just checked right now and get an error about failing to extract the LemmingsPlus.zip file. The problem is, that the NeoLemmix homepage does no longer serve it for some reason.

@Nessy: Could you please check why the download at https://www.neolemmix.com/download.php?program=47 failes? This is linked in the "Download All" part of https://www.neolemmix.com/?page=lemmingsplus.

Why the Internet Options are still not available?
Windows 10 Enterprise 1909 (64-bit)
Java version 8 update 251 (64-bit)
SuperLemmini 0.104a
NeoLemmix Player V12.8.2

Why the Internet Options are still not available?

This is not yet implemented.

I think it is planned that the player can get updates and new tilesets automatically with this option from the NeoLemmix website, so that the user doesn't have to do it manually.

The levels I have solved in NeoLemmix are now suddenly orange-checked. Could my player have somehow updated itself automatically recently?

Also, I can't seem to play certain levels in Lemmings Plus VI because it can't find certain object pieces.

Orange check means that the level has changed. If I remember correctly, it uses the CRC32 of the level file to detect this, so this should only happen if the file has actually changed. EDIT: Just tested, it apepars it actually uses the modified date. Thus, if you use the installer when upgrading, it will likely overwrite existing files with new copies, which will turn the checkmarks orange even if the level itself hasn't changed at all. However, if you have your replay files (assuming you haven't disabled it, NeoLemmix should automatically be saving them in replay/[game name]/Auto), you can run a replay mass check on them; this will restore the green checkmarks (as long as your replay still solves the level).

The NeoLemmix styles download at one point had corrupted versions of the LPVI styles; redownloading the styles should fix this.

Well most of the checkmarks (which there are a lot of) are orange now and I definitely haven't manually updated NeoLemmix in a long time. (Would it be best to use an attached update to do that or use the installer?) Also, unfortunately I haven't been saving any replays. But as long as the checkmarks are still there at all (regardless of color) then I suppose I could be much worse off.

In any case Lemmings Plus VI works correctly now so thank you for that at least.

The installer will also get the latest version of all the included-by-default level packs, so that might be nice. But ultimately, all the installer does is download the ZIP files and extract them to the correct places, so it makes little difference. You may want to consider downloading manually if you're on an internet plan with a low data cap (eg. a cellphone hotspot), as some of the downloaded by default packs have a lot of large music files. (NepsterLems, Lemmings Reunion and Lemmings Plus VI are the biggest offenders here.)
