Lemmings PSP/PS2 Music - Listen Here!
« on: March 07, 2010, 05:18:29 AM »
Firstly, go to this YouTube page and listen to the PSP/PS2 tracks.

Then vote for your favourite!

My guess is we'll see a lot of votes for Old Tune 3? What do you think?

I want to hear Old tunes 2 and 3. :-)

On the page, it appears as if these are missing, along with Roman 1-3.

Hmm, I'll see if I can rectify that. They may be up there, but hidden from view. I'm not sure. I don't really like how YouTube profiles work anymore. Maybe I'll create a playlist.

Hang on, where are the Egyptian ones? ???

Anyway, I voted for the title screen. It's jolly and related to the game.

I don't like these new ones at all. The classic ones are the best... so Old Tune 3 for me.

Okay, finally had a listening at these.

JESUS CHRIST WHAT THE @#$@*#( WERE THEY THINKING?!?!?   :o ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley" /> :XD: :-\

Whoever did the music should be fired.  (To clarify: not the composers themselves per se who probably just worked with the general criteria they're given with; I mean the one person who decided on the general stylings of the new music.)   Most of the new ones are just awful.  Who's bright idea is it to fill the new tunes with mostly over-orchestrated, slow-paced elevator music (in the worst sense of the term)?

The difference is clear as night and day as soon as you compare the Old Tune ones (and I also the title screen) with the new ones.  If their objective is to put the player to sleep as quickly as possible I think they've won gold medal on that, hands down. :XD:

With only 4 choices left, I ended up voting for the title screen.  If only they had the sense to make the new music more in the style of the title screen and old tunes, and not the embarassing dreck we ended up with instead.  Truly a low point in the history of Lemmings music if you ask me. :(

Which leads to the next question:  what are the PS3 Lemmings music like?  More the old-tune style, or the horrid new style from PSP/PS2?

Can't say I agree, I don't mind the style of the new tunes per se, they just don't fit the general Lemmings vibe; Lemmings is not such an athmospheric game.
And ok, they got a monotonous rhythm (guess that's the elevator criterion), but the themes themselves are actually a bit diverse. It's definately something one yould listen to in the background while doing work.

But if they borrow themes from the original games, why do they have to choose the two most annoying ones, the 'Cancan' and 'She'll be coming round the mountain'? :XD: The third theme is a good choice, but they butchered it a bit with their trumpets that sound chopped off.
The title theme is cool though.

I know I'll probably get shot down for it, but I'm the one who voted for the Crystal music.  ;P I understand completely where people are coming from about the PS2 music, but the way I see it, we know we all love the old tunes so why vote for them when other unique ones are included too? Yes, it's musak, yes it's kind of "ambient" and, errrm, non-descript, but I just remember enjoying the "mood" the music generated for me when I was playing PS2 Lemmings for the first time. I like some of the Egyptian tunes but I only wanted to vote once here.

I like some of the PS3 Lemmings tunes too. Heresy!  I know I'm in a minority, but across all the versions of Lemmings I've played, I like different tunes for different reasons. Heh, I'm not called "weirdy" for nothing, after all...

Haha, for someone who disagrees, you sure do point out a lot of stuff that's precisely what I hate about the new music.  :P

I suppose I could be overreacting a little and am simply biased due to familiarity with the old music.  Also note that I still think the music is well-composed, which is why I say I wouldn't fire the composers but would fire the "music director".

Well I tried to give the new music a chance.  I did listen to all the music we can vote for, okay maybe not the full length of each, but I think I gave each music at least 15-20 seconds worth of listening.  I may be biased towards the old tunes, but I honestly cannot find much I like about the new ones.  And actually, in my notes I did jotted down earth 3 and hell 3 as two that are more tolerable, and for some reason, crystal 3 (even though right next to it I put, in parenthesis, "sleepy"? :-\ :D)

That's not a bad point actually.  Perhaps the music simply makes a bad first impression on me, but might not be so bad when I actually play the game and they play discretely in the background.  Then again, I tend to tune out the music completely anyway when my mind's focused on the level solving and execution.

And I still think that music can be ambient and non-descript without being slow and sedated, which tends to be the sort of feeling projected by the new-style PS2 music, at least to my ears.  Cut down on the over-lush orchestration, throw in rhythms (ie. percussion) with a little more energy, and speed up the tempo a little, and I think it'd make a noticeable difference to my ears even if you keep the music ambient and non-descript (ie. no prominent melody/"tune" to speak of).

Well, if you can point me to the PS3 tunes I wouldn't mind giving them a listen and see what I think.  I emphasize that it's not simply a matter of old vs new for me when it comes to the PSP/PS2 new music, it's the fact that the new music goes in a direction that I simply do not like.  As a comparison, Lemmings 2 have totally different music from Lemmings 1 (except for Classics tribe), yet I like many of the new music in Lemmings 2 (in fact if I were to vote on the Lemmings 2 music, I probably won't vote for the Classic tribe even though it's a well-done rearrangement of 2 tunes from L1).

Can Can is actually not bad, but I agree on She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain.

Funny, I kinda go the other way.  I can see geoo's point with Can Can as I find it, surprisingly given the new tunes, too energetic (though perhaps it could work with a more frentic level with lots of multi-tasking, or a short time limit).  But I thought the slightly spiffed-up version of "Mountain" wasn't so bad; I'd pick it over Old Tune 3 for example.

I think the PS3 lemmings tracks are pretty cool as well. Here's the theme tune, though the quality isn't perfect. I can't seem to find any youtube clips which just have the level themes though. Some of the level walkthroughs have decent quality sound; but you get all the SFX and the ones with decent sound don't have all the levels (and so miss some of the themes)

Actually, the only bad thing I pointed out about the music was the monotonous rhythm (and I think your suggestion of more percussion might make it stand out even more). (Well and the original tunes, which you appear to like however. I don't know, I just can't stand listening to most Lemmings versions of 'Cancan' and 'She'll be coming round the mountain'.)
Unlike you I like the instrumentation and overall style. :P

And if weirdy says that the music generated a good mood while playing lemmings, then I guess the 'not fitting the lemmings vibe' might be doubtful as well. Considering the different and more detailed style of the graphics, they might just match.

I haven't voted yet btw, because I don't really know which one to pick (just most definately not one of the original ones though).

Finally took the time to listen through all of this.

I quite like the ambient, almost dark themes in this soundtrack. I just don't think it works for a game like Lemmings - unless every second level is set in a dark cave or haunted mansion. :P

I voted for the title track, Old 2 a close 2nd.

;) I stress once again that I believe the music I hate are nevertheless well-composed, and they easily have their place in other places of other games.  But like ClamSpammer, I just don't see it working for Lemmings.

Though I suppose given their "calming" quality (aka sleepy IMHO :D), maybe it's a good way to keep the player from getting too easily frustrated with a level? ;P
