SMF 2.1.7 released - need to upgrade [Forums currently at 2.1.6]

A new update to SMF has been released, so the forums will need to be updated to it at some point. As always, due to the customizations and the use of addons (some of which have had to be installed manually and modified to be 2.1 compatible), it's not going to be as straightforward as just running the auto-update; but I'll look at sorting this update in the near future.

At this time I have no expected dates or other further details to share.

Hmm, just like that, SMF 2.1.6 was released yesterday, a few days after 2.1.5 was released. It's a minor hotfix for 2.1.5 according to the changelog.

Completely unrelated to this, but Firefox released two very quick versions too in the last few days, with the latest version released just today.

SMF is now upgraded to 2.1.6.

Please note, as a side effect of fixing a minor (but nonetheless, present) security issue I noticed during the upgrade, all account activation / reset password links in emails sent prior to the upgrade will now be invalid, and all users will have been signed out.

Please report any other issues you notice.

The issue recently with forum emails being delayed by a couple of hours was the fault of SMF 2.1.6. I've now applied a patch which should fix this issue.

Looks like version 2.1.7 dropped last month, so we'll need to upgrade the Forums to it sometime

How many people are using the forum nowadays? It seems less active than before my break. Silken told me that almost everyone is on Discord now, but is everything taking place there? If there's anything I can do to support the forum, please let me know, I don't want it to be replaced...

No danger of that. While most chatting takes place on discord, the forum is essential for long-term storage of levels, styles and so on, as well as more important conversations like decisions on the physics of various engines -- anything that needs to be kept easily accessible in the long term.

I see the two as complementary, not as one replacing the other.

Discord is much better suited to quick chats, collab projects / challenges, etc. Whereas the forum is much better suited to larger info-dumps, sharing content, etc. Both are an important part of the community, and I don't see either one going anywhere any time soon.

Yeah agreed. This is basically what I said to Lana on the "General Comings and Goings" thread she's referring to by "Silken told me that almost everyone is on Discord now," though in actuality I said that it was about 50-50 and that Discord was "as active if not more" (implying if Discord was more active then the forums, only a bit above 50%), not that "almost everyone is on Discord now," but maybe I didn't verbalize it well enough and made it seem like Discord is comparatively more active then the Forums then I meant to communicate in actuality. Although that being said Lana didn't say "almost everyone is exclusively on Discord now" she could have just meant almost everyone is on Discord as well as the forums so that wasn't necessarily a misunderstanding of what I said in the General Coming and Goings thread.

Looking back at my recent activity, I realized that I mostly use the forum to send/reply to DMs with people who aren't on the Discord server(usually just for casual chats or exchanging our levels). Other than that, I haven't really contributed much to the public side of the forum. I guess I should try to be more active there from now on!

If you want to interact with people more and chat about everyday things, I think the LF Discord server is the better place. I've noticed that many people who only check the forum occasionally are active on Discord almost every day. Of course, as everyone else has already pointed out, the forum still serves an important purpose. It's the better place for larger projects and things that need to be preserved for the long term.
