Basher/miner/digger next to steel – same on Amiga/Atari/PC as DOS?

Hi all, I'm new here. I've been building a Lemmings remake for iPad, with the DOS physics ported across and a level editor. I'm hoping someone here knows the answer to a steel question.

In DOS Lemmings, you can't assign a basher, miner or digger if the lemming is within about 8px of steel. The game checks for steel 8px ahead at chest height, and for digger and miner it also checks under the feet. The skill is refused outright, so there's no chink and no skill used up. The chink only plays once a lemming is already bashing or digging and hits steel.

It also means a lemming walking along a steel area can't start bashing until it's a few pixels clear of it.

Did the Amiga and Atari ST and PC versions behave the same way? Or could you assign the skill right up against steel and just get the chink? I'm trying to decide whether to keep the DOS behaviour or let the skill go on and chink.

Thanks, and thanks for all the brilliant work on Lemmix and NeoLemmix, which has been a big help.

Just had a quick look on Amiga Forever and can confirm that the Basher and Miner both cannot be assigned when the lemming is in direct contact with the steel. I'm not sure of the exact pixel distance, but 8px sounds about right. If the lemming is within that distance from the steel, the skill is not assigned - although we do hear the familiar 'dink' sound even in this case.

A couple of comments though:

1) This is your project, so you don't always have to be 100% faithful to the source material. I would encourage you to do whatever feels right to you as developer of this clone. It can be as unique as you like!

2) We do already have a significant number of clones based on the DOS version, and (afaik) none based on the Amiga version. I'd encourage you to use the Amiga panel graphics and general color palette rather than DOS's yucky yellow skill panel and plain black background. It would make for a good USP for your clone! ;)

Also, welcome to the Forums! :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.  I had no idea there were other clones out there - I just set Claude making it for the kids ipads - they have loved it, I have loved playing it again and It's great that we havenow made a level editor with levels we can share for each other.

It seems that the whole community here is well ahead of me so I'll not confuse things by sharing 'yet another remake' I have been fixing quirks in steel ground pieces tonight to improve the game - I hope I'm allowed to say that.

All the best.

All projects, particularly Lemmings-related ones, are more than welcome on the Forums. We'd love to see what you have come up with! :)

Ok, that's the live page hosted from GitHub, my initial message was badly worded. I played lemmings on the Amiga/atari as a kid and I was wanting to know if the 'glitch' I found in Dos was also the same in other versions: your previous reply basically convinced me it doesn't matter - so I fixed it in my version.

My favourite feature is the level maker and share feature. The kids have made some levels which are great for 10 year olds but probably too easy for you guys. I've made a couple I'm really proud of and you can play them if you go to 'Our Levels'.

Cheers.

When i work lemmini levels 15-17 years ago. Just those metal things annoyed me really much. You have to always add steel render per each metal block and heck yeah this caused millions backroutes. Thanks god its fixed neolemmings and also superlemmings. So its not that hard make make levels anymore.

Neolemmings metal system is really simple and perfect. Just add metals and you cannot goes through it. Check out just clearphysic and see where you cannot go. That is helluva much working and easier system and no waste much time.

Its also look SNES, DOS, GENESIS lemmings are maded just this old metal steelrender system which allow you bash those metals quite easily. SNES lemmings also contains bug when you use blocker, you can break metal.
