I'm one of the key workers that work on weekends but I'm free this weekend (i.e. the 8th, 9th and 10th). Also, it's nice to see RubiX returning to play Lix more often again. So I thought, why not initiate our first Multiplayer session of 2020?  It's only two weeks away. I put a poll up for everyone to decide on the date.  Looking forward to meeting everyone there. :8:()[:

Other Projects / Lemmix Player Controls

Where can I find a full list of controls for the original Lemmix Player? The NeoLemmix website and the player itself doesn't show anything AFAIK.

Challenges / Damage-only levels
March 20, 2020, 12:46:53 PM
I hope this is a good name for the challenge, but it's supposed to be the flipside to Luis' old challenge: Undamaged levels. I'm sure the diagram below along with the description and the replay will give everyone a better understanding of the challenge.

If you haven't heard of Luis' challenge. The objective was to solve the level without damaging the terrain. You can use digging and bombing skills, but they should only be used on created stairs.

This challenge is the complete opposite. Here you are allowed to destroy terrain, but for any builders you create, they must be removed completely at the end for your result to count. In Lemmings Revolution, builders inside a created tunnel automatically blends with the landscape.

For example, I've attached a (DOS) replay for Tricky 1: An example of a solvable level where the builder is required, but is rather straightforard to remove. If this challenge is popular then I won't hesitate to get started.

Hi. A pop-up came up on my NeoLemmix Player about an update. I've been told to go to www.neolemmix.com to download. It's fine that it takes you to the main page, but it doesn't take you directly to the download page, which led me to be confused.

https://www.neolemmix.com/?page=neolemmix is a better link.

Contests / The Level Solving Contest #7
December 06, 2019, 12:37:34 PM
Hello everyone, and welcome to the final Level Solving Contest of 2019. (Sorry, Nessy. I just remembered you hadn't had a chance to comment on that previous LSC. Hope that's okay.)

We have been playing NeoLemmix for a little too long now. So instead I have gone ahead and created a custom built Lix level for you to play with.

Here's the order of criteria below. If anyone is not happy with this order please let me know, and I can create a separate ordering just like Crane did for his most recent LSC:

1. Most Lix saved
2. Fewest number of skills used
3. Fewest skills given to busiest Lix

One of the tiebreaking criteria I've chosen for this challenge is unusual and complicated. Basically, the player that selects the fewest skills with the "busiest" lix will win the tiebreak. The "busiest" meaning the Lix given more skills than any other lix. The link to the retrospective challenge that I got it from is here. I haven't done this sort of challenge for a while, but it's out there because my belief is that if you can assign skills to multiple lix you are a good multitasker, and multitasking is one of the key attributes to being good at multiplayer. Initially I put it at first priority, but after extensive testing decided to put it third instead.

The rules are similar to before: The players will play individually for this contest. Solve the level, and then upload a replay of your submission to my Personal Messages box by 23:00 UTC on December 31, 2019. This I hope should allow enough time for anyone who may be taking time off for Christmas but still wish to take part. You can submit more than one replay if you want to if you think you've made an improvement, but only the best replay will be selected as the final result.

Key
SU: Skills used
Lix: Lix saved
SAOBL: Skills assigned on busiest Lix.

The winner of LSC #7 will not only be allowed to choose a level for the next contest, but also be given a MIDI copy of one of the tracks I've remixed from another game similar to Lemmings. (Not this level sadly, a mystery one! Also, apologies that I'm unable to convert MIDI to ogg, but that's a matter that should be discussed elsewhere)

Now here's a basic description of the level posted in the attachment below: It has four entrances, three inside the arena and one outside. While not an exact replica, some players may remember this level template from that other game, but I've tweaked it slightly to add a feature not yet seen in LSC: Infinite fallers! Don't worry, they're not all gonna be spread out. The Spawn rate was cleverly calculated so that they all fall in one place. You might also be wondering why that block on the right is out there in the open.

With 30 Lix - 7 of them being infinite fallers - and 100 skills provided, you must rescue at least one infinite faller for your result to count. Hopefully with this many skills you will also get a chance to practice assigning Lix in more areas than one so you can get to grips with multiplayer. I wish you good luck and have fun! Oh, and Merry Christmas.

I'm hoping that I (or someone else) can organise a multiplayer session sometime in December. I will be busy on Saturday evenings and will not make it home until around 20:30 but Sundays should be OK for me.

Using High Resolution, I checked the automatic replay button but unchecked the timestamp replay checkbox. As soon as the replay file came out the timestamp is still there.

When you first boot up NeoLemmix you will see a drop-down menu of three different hotkey layouts, which are (I think) Functional, Traditional and Minimalist. I believe it's useful to copy this over to the Configure Hotkeys menu. Because if the player accidently chooses the wrong option there's no easy way to get this back, and instead must go through the tedium of changing one control at a time. Thanks.

I just downloaded one of these packs from NeoLemmix.com today. Any evidence of which levels have been changed, and what kind of changes have been made to them? I don't mind a PM or a response, but it's important for me personally, particularly for Original and OhNo because of my Challenge thread. Thanks.

I also notice that these haven't been cleansed yet.

Several changes have been made to NeoLemmix within the past five years. Now with the inclusion of 10 skills in a skill bar, and that we also have 2 new skills (Slider and Laserer) to play with, I thought I might create a brand new thread instead of update the old one (Which I'm going to lock). I also remember whether we should be using the Cloner or not. I updated one of the criteria to reflect this. The results from the old thread (which can be found here) can be used as a reference point for some levels, but the setup guidelines are outdated, and some of the features aren't seen in the new NeoLemmix Player, such as Challenge Mode. Also, with the updated NeoLemmix mechanics we cannot guarantee that all solutions from the new version will be able to match the old version.

To save everyone else time and effort and also, to circumvent the lack of Challenge Mode I've gone over all the Original and OhNo levels and added 10 of each new skill to every level. If any more skills are needed let me know, or if there're any that I find, I'll reupload the levels. The downloads can be found at the bottom of this thread. The rules are similar to before:

1) Can the level be beaten with only the new skills?
2) If so, assuming an X-of-everything skillset, what is the lowest X the level can be beaten with? ^
3) How many lemmings can you lose? *

^For example, solving a level with 2 builders and 2 miners is better than solving it with 3 bashers, because you've only used any one skill a maximum of twice.

*This is a change from highest %. Since the Cloner is always available, it wouldn't be a good criterion to go for most lemmings saved, because players can just put the rest of the skills on Cloners once they are happy with the solution. One downside to this criterion however is that there is no accountancy for any lemmings lost for this engine so for the sake of this challenge please mention it!

I will also include results where Rule #3 (Lemmings lost count) prioritises Rule #2 (X-of-each skillset).

Found this bug while playing a contest level. See attachment below.

In this two-image file, the one at the bottom is how it looks when I hover the cursor over the lemming. That's OK. The one at the top is what it looks like without the cursor. I don't know if this is always the case, but my suggestion is that normal lemmings should always appear in front of neutrals without the player having to hover the cursor over one.

Challenges / Challenges board: How it works
October 21, 2019, 08:07:08 AM
*Thread updated with new information displayed by asterisk.

Welcome to the Challenges board. To avoid confusion, here is an introduction as well as some reminders as to how they work, and how you can take part.

Each challenge thread is traditionally based on the whole set of levels from one game and finding out what are the best records - or if that doesn't apply, which levels can be solved - under one specific criterion. One example is the Maximum Lemmings Saved Records thread, where the record for the most lemmings saved on each level is kept on the opening post. Of course, there are some challenges that only relate to one individual level. For this, we have the Oh No! More Challenges thread.

The results for each challenge are used by a certain engine. Each engine has different physics which can affect the solution for the same level. The engine must be displayed before the thread's title, written in square brackets. If a topic doesn't have an engine / version tag, you should assume it relates to the DOS version.

The format needs to be used like this:

[NeoLemmix] My NeoLemmix Challenge

The link to these engines can be found here. For DOS challenges, DOSBox and LemmixPlayer are acceptable engines. NeoLemmix is not allowed. To clarify, the version of LemmixPlayer allowed is the older versions with seperate EXEs for each pack (downloads archived on the NeoLemmix website); there is a newer all-in-one version that has not yet been verified as accurate-to-DOS (and was known, at least at one point, to have some intentional inaccuracies by the developer).

Incomplete Challenges
Any challenges that are incomplete will be displayed in paraphrases (circular brackets) at the end of the thread if needed. The incomplete tag should only be applied to the main set of levels of each Lemmings game only. Games such as Oh No! More Lemmings and Xmas Lemmings are regarded as expansion packs rather than a main set; whereas Lemmings 2 and 3 are regarded as main groups of levels because they play completely different to each other.

Replays
For solutions to more complicated challenges, a replay is recommended. *To ensure that they are the best quality, it is encouraged that all replays (including screenshots) should be captured from a PC and not from external sources, such as a video recorder or camera. Blurred content would make it unnecessarily harder for readers to understand one's uploaded content.

LemmixPlayer's replay files use the .lrb file extension. The controls are:
L = Load replay
U = Save replay
R = Restart level

NeoLemmix is able to save your level automatically (Unless you've turned this off) when the level is passed. The "Load Replay" icon appears on the far bottom right corner of the full-size skill panel. If you can't find it, Go to the Main Menu, press F3 and click on the "Interface" tab. Uncheck the "Compact Skill Panel" checkbox and the icon should be there the next time you play a level. Modern versions of NeoLemmix use the .nxrp file extension.

For games involving the DOSBox (2, 3, and 3D), you can use a video recorder - There's a useful document here on how to use it - but if you don't know how then using screenshots is fine, as long as you include text as well as precise cursor locations and lemming placements. A .png file is preferred for uploading screenshots.

For Lemmings Revolution, unfortunately I haven't found any information on how to save replays there. You'll probably have to record a video or make some screenshots with descriptions.

Uploading the replay is easy. Clicking the "Attachments and other options" button followed by "browse" should open up a window for you to find the replay you want to upload.

So there you go. Hope everything is clear. Have fun playing the Challenges board! 8-)

All the other sound effects are fine, but the oblivion effect is as annoying as ever, as it has been over the years (I think given that this has been mentioned so late after its release, we must all be wondering why this hasn't been talked about earlier). :lix-dead: Have a listen and you'll see.

I don't know how to create OGG files but whoever can I'd suggest making the pitch at least an octave lower and cut the volume in half too.

I don't usually upload sounds but this is what it sounds like at the moment.

Just noticed this minor bug whilst looking up all the hotkeys. The F9 button still works though, but still, I couldn't find it on any of the drop-down menus.

Continuing with the subject, may I also suggest that there's a way to display whether the Grid toggle is turned on or off? I'm thinking somewhere at the corner of the screen similar to the co-ordinates of terrain pieces and objects.

Hi. I just found another bug which is hard to describe. So I thought my picture would help me to describe the situation.

Under certain level sizes, a certain zoom and a certain resolution, I don't always see the vertical scroll bar, therefore I cannot edit the area at the bottom of the level, unless if I change zoom. My level's height is 192 pixels, and my screen resolution is 1366 x 768. I zoomed the level to x3 and discovered the error.

The area marked by the orange ring is the missing scroll bar, and the purple ring roughly marks the area I can't edit, which is approx. 16 pixels.

So namida just posted a bug involving pickup skills that triggers an error message. I'm getting a similar sort of thing here which according to the level doesn't have any pickup skills at all, but instead had several updrafts, and pre-assigned gliders.

Basically, the error message pops up when loading this level in the editor, but is still playable in the player. It can be found the "War" rank of the "Lemmings United".

There are guides for the majority of building and digging skills etc., but how about a guide for the jump height of a Shimmier? So far I can't tell how high in pixels a reacher can jump, and to waste a skill when it can't jump onto a certain ceiling is harsh.

Other than that, really enjoying the new Shimmier skill. It's amazing, unless you're trying to make it disarm a trap. Like the climber, a shimmier can't disarm traps either.

Got the new NeoLemmix to launch for the first time. and unsurprisingly, I found another bug.

In the Configure Hotkeys menu, there is no option to select the Shimmier skill with the keyboard, unlike all the other skills. Shouldn't be too hard to fix though, but I thought I'd mention this.

Hi again. Sorry to report another bug (that I probably should've posted a long time ago) but when testing tall levels on fullscreen my taskbar gets in the way of the skillset, and I have no idea which skill I'm selecting next. ??? Here's what I'm getting at the moment in the attachment below.

Although not many people would probably want to use the smaller zoom settings anyway, :-\ hopefully this bug would provoke a decision whether the lower zooms should be kept or not.

On the interface, when changing from full screen to windowed mode, turning the Compact Skill Panel button off and simultaneously changing the zoom to 1x or 2x, OR if you've started up Neolemmix with these settings, the enhanced skill panel completely disappears, presumably because the window is too small to contain them. The problem also occurs with the Compact Skill Panel on 1x zoom. Fortunately the smaller Skill Panel does appear on the 2x zoom windowed interface.

Here are some of the interfaces I've been given below. May I also mention that on windowed mode, the window's size doesn't change when changing zooms, unless you exit the game and start it up again.
