Guess: A koan has the buddha-nature if the sum of its alphabetic values (A = 1, B = 2 etc) is prime. (Nepster's koan sums to 277, if my arithmetic is correct.)

This is incorrect. For example, MORIARTY does not have buddha nature, though 8 is clearly not prime.
