What does everyone make of Lemmings Paintball?
« on: May 02, 2013, 10:18:56 PM »
I've had a look around for a thread like this, but there doesn't seem to be one. If I've missed one, please do point me there, instead! :P

Anyway, I've been wondering for a while, what's the general consensus on Lemmings Paintball, around here?

It's always seemed to be a bit of a divisive game among fans of the Lemmings series, as far as I've ever been able to tell, and I remember that it became a budget-priced title shockingly fast, at the time of its release. Hell, just over sixteen years on, I *still* don't quite know what I make of it, aside from the thoughts listed below;

1: The lemming illustrations on the menus and success/failure screens are weird-looking.

2: The in-game sprites are cute and I wish that I had the ability to rip them.

3: The controls, collision-detection, and player-lemming path-finding make things much more rage-inducingly difficult than they need to be by frequently behaving in a stupid fashion.

4: I quite like the music and really need to find a way to make accurate MP3s of it that sound as they did on the SoundBlaster-bearing Microsoft Windows 95 box that I first played it on.

5: The game has an odd intro and ending.

All of this said, I'm still not really sure whether I like or dislike the game, so I'm just wondering what everyone else thinks of it.

I was waiting for this!  :D I was actually going to make my own post eventually but I'm glad you did.

I'll write more later when I have time. For now; I like the game, indeed. And play it again from time to time.

I have the MIDI music files too and unfortunately, my Adobe Audition can't read them I think so I would like to turn up the volume because they are really quiet for some reason. Do you know of a way to get Audition (or any program) to work with MIDI files?

I'm afraid I've never even heard of Adobe Audition until your mention of it, there! I use Linux, and Adobe doesn't really make a lot of stuff available for Linux. ;) (My plan was to perhaps install this old Windows 95 disc I've got hanging around here in DOSBox, to get the sound I remember.)

Ah yes, I've also played this game before (and I remember that my CD also came with a free Lemmings game for Windows :P) I certainly enjoyed this idea, having to shoot enemies before advancing. Even though I'm not into shooters, I've found Lemmings Paintball funny, unique and quite charming compared to the others, which had me playing for a while. If only they had more levels and had an idea about having some checkpoint positions for those longer levels (such as Grossi's Lair and Dead End Lemming), it would be a little more interesting. But still, I've enjoyed this unique shooter game for quite a few years.

I bought Paintball when I was pretty young and liked it for a few reasons. First of all it comes bundled with Windows Lemmings 95, so I got to play L1 again after a few years since after our computers didn’t have DOS anymore.
Anyway, I like the game despite having quite a few flaws. I like the isometric style. The concept is pretty cool and has some interesting chellenges. Getting the Lemmings to go where you want can be kind of confusing at first. But given the difficulties I think they actually handled it not too poorly. One of the biggest problems is lemmings can be hidden behind walls. They should have made them highlighted or something while hidden.

It has sort of the same flaws the other Lemmings games do. There are a good number of levels that are just kind of plain or boring. [The very first level is so easy its almost insulting] On the other hand there are some really fun puzzles, as well as some “dodging” challenges with the enemy lemmings or time tests.

My favorite levels are: Vortex, Lemming Aid, Bouncy Boing, The Red Lemming Connection, Lemmings in the Wood 2, (not 1!!!!!), Grossi’s Lair, Lemming Drops.

my least favorite are Lemmings in the Woods 1, To switch or not to switch, 12 Assasins of Lemming, and Dead End Lemming

I like the little clay animation cut scenes as well  :D

This game also has what I personally think is the most annoying level of any video game in history;

Oh yes, the annoying sheep's noise. ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley" /> That's probably the biggest flaw in the game. That's why I couldn't be bothered to play that level. Luckily it was only on this level and nothing else. I also hated those rockets that appear out of nowhere (From I think Taxing 15 and Mayem 9). They always spook me.

yeah, I have to wonder if the level designer put those sheep in there as a prank or some sort of in-joke thing and it was accidentally left in or something... It's so odd and annoying.

the rockets could be annoying too. Possibly the weirdest hidden trap ever. My favorite trap is the green monster or the "hand".  :scared: that scared me as a kid.

Oh yes the annoying sheep used to annoy my brother, somehow I liked it.

To be honest I really liked this game, spent a lot of time trying to complete which eventually I managed to beat the game around five years ago.  The level that was holding me back was the red lemming connection mayhem one.  I agree the rocket traps were kind of spooky in a way

I would really like there to be a lemmings 2 paintball (who else agrees)

There was a website which I think was called Leo's lemmings paintball.

I probably would've liked to see some sort of expansion, but as it is actually a spinoff, they probably didn't have any intention of sequelising this game, or maybe it wasn't popular enough?

There was a website which I think was called Leo's lemmings paintball.

I think it's actually Lee's lemmings paintball, but it doesn't really matter because it's now closed down.

I'm surprised Lee's website is no more, but anyways. I remember that within the game, there's a level editor included but kinda unknown to access. I know that, because the dialog boxes that served to edit levels are still inside the executable. Those are:
- Enter the level name
- Enter the lift data
- Edit the general properties
- Edit the ice sliding
- Edit the starting position of paintguns
- Edit the moving ground style
- Edit the ball speed
- Edit ammo
- Edit invisible switches

There are command lines to use, but their usage is still unknown. Once we could figure out how all this works, then surely that we could be able to edit our own Lemmings Paintball levels. And also, uncompressing the PBAIMOG.VSR file would definitely help. That's all I know.

Lee started building his own Lemmings Paintball editor. There were only screenshots of it on his website, along with unimplemented elements.

You can still access to the site in the archives and look at the screens there.

That might be something I might consider for the future making levels for lemmings paintball as long as it's not too complicated.

That level was a nightmare especially when the flag is so near but then a wall blocks you off.  (Still not a bad level I thought)

I spent a lot of time playing this game, very fun.

I bought this game twice, the very first disc I had was scratched to bits that it wouldn't work anymore so I decided to buy another one which I still have to this day. yippee

I wonder if we could contact Lee about the level editor.

Lemmings Paintball level editor! *mindblown*

That's something I could actually really get lost in if it existed!

I did an LP of Lemmings Paintball on my YT channel a few years ago and I think the worst levels in the LP were hands down the Mayhem levels
Mayhem 5 - Teaching a Lemming New Tricks (those damn star platforms are so hard to get onto for some reason!)
Mayhem 7 - Lemmings in the Woods (yeah the sheep are annoying but not a hard level overall)
Mayhem 8 - 12 Assassins of Lemming (a bit of a shoot out but at least you get 3 extra lemmings)
Mayhem 9 - Big Trouble in Little Level (this solution is showed in demo on title screen, imagine solving it without that help!)
Mayhem 10 - Dead End Lemming (F**k this level, seriously. 5 minutes and 2 lemmings is not enough for this!)
Mayhem 13 - Babylem 5 (this is hands down the hardest level in the game puzzlewise, it's just so tough to work out)
Mayhem 14 - Lemming Aid (this level is just long and full of times you can trip up!)
Mayhem 17 - Lemming Flambe (platforming nightmare with 3 flags!)
Mayhem 18 - Nowhere to Run (repeat of 12 assassins and there's little difference!)
Mayhem 19 - Lemmings DiLemma (another tricky puzzle!)
Mayhem 20 - The Last Red Lemming Connection (yeah, this level is tricky in terms of puzzle and shooting!)
Mayhem 22 - Be Careful Who You Shoot (this is a repeat of Mayhem 19, a weak last level but it's even harder)

I'm just curious also if anyone managed to try out the Network Game option in Lemmings Paintball, I was never able to get it working sadly and I've never seen the 2 player specific levels let alone how many there are.
It was so complicated to get the Network Game set up I thought, it would also have been an interesting game to play on multiplayer.
