General Discussion / Re: General Comings and Goings

Well, I've given my computer a rest for about a month now. I think I've improved a bit as far as my self-control goes. I think I'll give it another week or so and see how I feel. If it goes well, I may be returning to the forums soon.

Seems I've missed a few things... Hopefully it gets better for those who are struggling.

I've been spending way too much time on my computer lately. I'm going to quit cold turkey until I can get some better self-control, so I'll be disappearing from the forum indefinitely.

Well I've finished the first rank and from what I have seen so far, the difficulty is fairly high. Not as lethal as Lemmicks, but it's no cakewalk. Difficulty is also a bit sporadic; there's some pretty easy levels mixed in with hard ones. It kinda goes all over the place.

I've been at around 57 kg for at least 6 years now. At 1.8 m tall, this means it's also difficult to find pants that fit.
If I exercised more than what I get at my job then I might not have this problem...

Still, I'll take that over being too far in the other direction. :D

I also have no means of recording it off of my console. Even if I did, both of my N64 controllers have janky control sticks. One is super loose and pretty unresponsive, the other is a pointed spike that digs into your thumb because it was a 3rd party controller and the cap for the stick popped off and was lost.

I won't be able to play until 1PM PST (which is 3 hours after the time Nessy proposed, I believe.) My time in service is more important than this, sorry. Gotta focus on the race for life before the race to beat Ocarina of Time. :D

I have gotten "obtain terrain loop" errors as well. I think they're caused by the level containing pieces that are not in the tileset version the player has.
For instance, I get an error on Groupie 34 because it can't find piece 64 in the Fire tileset. That's because the version of said tileset that I have only has 58 terrain pieces in it.

Strato, did you add any pieces to your tilesets while making this pack? Perhaps making your styles folder part of the download could solve this type of error.

The pack is pretty fun so far. Even the early levels aren't trivial. Groupie 7 was... Fantastic. The preview text really did it. Gives you a warm fuzzy feeling, you know? :D
I haven't played a huge number of other people's levels, so I don't know how many 'styles' I'll be able to pick out from that rank. I'll probably be getting stuck on some levels in this pack too, so expect videos in my "help me" topic at some point!

I will likely get into other packs with this same topic later. I have been diving back into LPIV for instance, and have solved a few more levels that I couldn't before.

I'm in the camp that likes the stricter builder check in NeoLemmix the way it is. Mainly because it is so rarely a thing that needs to be worried about. Trying to force your way through a thin ceiling with builders alone is very rarely the correct solution, so changing the behavior seems needless.

You could probably still design a level in NeoLemmix that forces going through a ceiling with builders only. You'd have to take extra care that the additional builders you would need don't cause a backroute somewhere, however. Or you could just fill up the remaining gap with a stacker, or use some other skill to punch through the ceiling... There's lots of ways to work with the different mechanics. As Icho said, we have to try things out and learn how to design cool levels around what we have. I think as a community there has been a lot of success in this regard.

The Genesis and SNES versions not checking near the feet seems to be the behavior I recall as well. It's easily seen in a level like King of the Castle. Try to force your way through the ceiling with builders. You'll bump three times, then go through the ceiling and the builder will not stop until he has fully connected the stairs with the ceiling, allowing the Lemmings to pass through.

The same scenario in NeoLemmix has the builder get rejected three times, then start to build freely. However, he will get stopped two pixels short of sealing the gap, and have to use two more builders to seal it fully.

In short: Forcing your way through thin ceilings with builders is more expensive in NeoLemmix.

Saturday should be fine for me around 1 PM (9 PM UST).

Dunno if I want to play Ocarina of Time all in one sitting though... Even the vanilla game takes a while if you aren't using crazy speedrun tricks.
Then again, who's to say we have to do it all in one sitting? We could always break it up into multiple sessions if need be. Just save and quit, then pick it up later.

Should probably stick to the vanilla game first. The randomizer could be interesting, but it's very easy to get a seed that will get you stuck running around like a ninny for hours looking for that one thing you're missing.

Solved it. Thanks much!
I'm still searching for the next stumper.

I have regained some composure and have found a new level to get stuck on. Check the first post for the details.

The point is to give everyone the same randomizer seed. The game will be randomized but it will be the same for everyone.

That all said, randomizers are better for people who are very experienced with the game in question and who know where everything is in vanilla. It's very easy to get stuck by having a key item that you need get placed in some obscure, easy-to-forget-about location.

I could try racing Sonic 3 as well... I've only played it a tiny bit and am horrible at Sonic games in general though.

My computer is too old to run OBS.
Edit: Scratch that, it works fine. Maybe I was remembering some other program I couldn't use, or maybe it's since been updated? Either way, looks promising...

The randomizer can be set up so that it forces a glitchless run to be possible. However, there is still the risk that key items could get put in really unpleasant places, such as behind the fishing minigame or the ten Big Poes...

Ugh, finally solved this level. So bitter.
Spoiler
Someone could have mentioned earlier that the bomber needed to be someone who never touched the middle layer. That would have helped... Or maybe a mention that the platformer shouldn't end up touching the middle layer either. :'(

Don't have the energy to go find another level to get stuck on right now.
