Ladies and gentleman, we've got our final results! :)

The winning level is:

"Childhood Dreams"

Congratulations to Armani for winning the contest!

Congratulation to Nessy as well as he reached the 2nd place with:

"A Rock And A Hard Place"

Choice for the prize for the first place is either:

- a month's advertising on the forum's news ticker
- picking the next contest's rules
- US $5.00 (PayPal would be the easiest here I think).

In each voting round, you're allowed to vote for up to a certain number of levels. Vote for the levels that you want to stay in the contest, not for levels you want eliminated. You may vote for fewer levels than the permitted maximum. You may vote for your own levels.

It's not allowed to discuss the levels publicly on the forums during the voting phase, even if the level is not in the current round, or even between rounds.

You may discuss any level in private messages. You may discuss publicly off-site, e.g., you may post Youtube videos of your playthroughs, or discuss in IRC chat. Eliminated levels may be discussed anywhere, even publicly on the forums.

There'll be voteoffs within each design rule, to get down to one/two/three remaining levels per design rule.

As we have quite a few levels this time: If after the rule voteoff the number of remaining levels is >9 due, I will create 2 mixed groups semi-randomly out of the remaining levels to bring down the number even further. For all of this no tiebreakers are planned. After this, all qualifying levels will go into a final mixed voteoff.

Also, as Rule 1 had a ton of entries the levels have been split up into 2 groups as well.

Generally, the number of levels that qualify for the next round will be the same as each user's permitted vote maximum. I've decided to keep the percentages of "surviving" levels of the rule-voteoffs somewhat similar to give every rule a fair chance. Example: A rule with a 66% survival-rate and one with a 33% survival-rate for the mixed rounds doesn't seem that fair to me.

There's only a prize for the 1st place winner - of course, getting close to that still means you made a great level.

So... let the voting begin! Each round will be open for voting for 3 days, except the final which will be 4 days.

All levels are still avialable in the discussion topic: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5432.0

Lemmings Main / Lemmings 1 Canadian CD soundtrack
March 30, 2021, 08:10:12 PM
I have had quite a few requests up to this point where I got the music for my standard NL music rotation.

It's the L1 Canadian CD soundtrack.

Download:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6i05d3dh74xy79j/L1CanadianSoundtrack.zip?dl=1

Feel free to also include this on the NL website as a music track. Although you may want to add better loop point for that. :P

Contests / Level of the Year 2020: Playing Phase
March 13, 2021, 01:08:32 PM
Alright, so nominations are now closed. Before we open the voting, we first offer a period to play the levels again, to familiarize yourself with those you haven't yet played and review those you have.

The list of nominated levels can be found in the nominations topic, I see no need to duplicate it here. It also contains information on where to find these levels outside of my compilation here.

Download links:

- Levelpack of all nominated levels.

Every author with 3 or more levels in this category gets an own rank in the pack. At the end there is a mixed rank for the leftover levels. Extract the zip file inside the main NL folder.
Exception: I put GigaLem's and Nessy's levels in a combined rank as their levels were closely tied up in Festival Millas 2020 anyway.

- Music tacks

The custom music tacks of the nominated levels. Extract the zip file inside the main NL folder.

- Replay collection

Some gathered replays from a few of the nominated levels. As this was optional, only a part of the pack is covered here.

Playing phase will end: April 30th 2021

General level feedback and solution replays can be posted here in the topic if you want! Have fun playing! :)

If there are any errors I've made in the collection, don't hesitate to inform me here! As a reminder: This pack is nothing more than an optional service I provide as an attempt to make all nominated levels more easily accessible.

Weird bug with buttons and locked exits.

1.) Select a locked exit level (my R2 level from contest 22 works).
2.) When entering the level press pause while the screen is still black.
3.) Load a replay for the level and proceed.

--> All buttons are being pushed down and the exits open visually. Internally they are still locked and the level cannot be completed anymore --> buttons already pushed and exits are internally locked.

Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5db1Lp-Csoo

Watch the section with my R2 level.
#106
So I always manually saved my replays in the file browser. My standard naming pattern was just the position of the level in the pack.

Now suddenly I see that not only NL changed the saving behavior from opening the file browser to "The program puts the replay in a folder of its choice", but after changing that back to opening the file browser I was shocked to see that all naming formats are now having timestamps.

- Pos + timestamp
- Title + timestamp
- Title + Pos + timestamp

Even after manually writing in just "Position" it doesn't do the trick.

Don't force the player to use name cluttering timestamps please! :8():

Suggestion to fix this:

- Make the timestamp option a checkbox to turn on/off
- Have the 3 options: 1.) Pos 2.) Title 3.) Title + Pos

Another issue:

"Open file selector" should be a checkbox and not an option beside the naming schemes.

Train of thought should be: Do NL shall choose the folder or do you want to browse.

Then choose standard naming format and timestamp yes/no.

As a current workaround: Go into the settings textdocument and change the text of the "AutoSaveReplayPattern", "IngameSaveReplayPattern" and "PostviewSaveReplayPattern" line to the following after the "=": *{GROUP}_{GROUPPOS}

Note: This topic is ONLY for posting updates to your levels, or making late submissions. All other posts will be deleted. If you want to discuss the levels, post replays, etc, please do so in the Discussion Topic.

Please follow these rules for updates:
1. When posting a new updated version of a level, remove any old updated versions of that level --> Have all your recent updates stored in 1 post! I will delete such old posts eventually if the author doesn't; so don't store any important information in them.
2. Make a new post for a new update; do not edit your most recent post. You may, however, post updates to multiple entries (if you have more than one) in the same post.
3. Use the same filename as found in the ZIP of the entered levels, with "V2" "V3" etc added at the end. No matter how minor an update is, give it a new number.
4. Do not post in this topic, unless it's to post an update to your levels. Use the discussion topic instead for anything else.

Please use the same naming format as in the zip file:  User1_Levelname_R3V5.lvl ---> Level "Levelname" by User1   for Rule 3   Version 5 of the level

For late submissions also, please use the same kind of filename as is used in the main levels download - ie: your username, and "R1" "R2" or "R3" to mark which rule the level is for. Please be sure to check the original contest announcement topic for the rules; as the notes in the discussion topic are simply meant as reminders, not full explanations of the rules.

Please use the right naming format when posting updates! That would lead to less confusions and less work for everyone.

So I was playing ArtLems today when I came across the situation in the attached replay.

Just replay it until everything is assigned. Then wait until the lemming begins to fall into the shaft and pause. Select the basher and try to assign it to the lemming at the bottom of the shaft --> NL does not respond anymore as the basher is infinite and the skill goes on for forever. Hiding skill shadows and then assigning the skill works. 8-)

Contests / Level of the Year: 2020!
January 28, 2021, 02:11:58 PM
For a list of nominated levels so far, please see the nominated levels topic.

And it's this time of the year again!

This is a bit different from the usual contests. You don't create a new level for this one; instead, levels released during 2020 get nominated and a winner picked from them. To be precise, the eligible dates are from 1st Janurary 2020 to 31th December 2020.

The following conditions must be met in order for a level to be eligible:
1. The level must have either been part of a large pack released during the eligible timeframe (1st Jan 2020 to 31th Dec 2020), or in some other way had its first public release during the timeframe. Private releases (such as sending to prerelease testers) do not affect eligibility either way. *
2. The level must be available for an engine that is usually eligible for the contests. Or in other words: NeoLemmix (new format version), or single-player Lix.
3. The level must be designed by a single author; collaboration levels are not eligible.
4. The creator of the level must not have specifically requested it be excluded.
5. The level must not have been nominated for LOTY2015/2016/2017/2018/2019.

* To clarify here: If it was released publicly prior to 1st Janurary 2020 as part of a demo or preview, but the full pack was released during the eligible period, the level is fine (as long as it wasn't nominated for LOTY2015/2016/2017/2018/2019).

Being a derivative of an ineligible level (as long as it's from the same author, the new author has a permission from the original one, or an official level) does not disqualify a level; as long as the level in question is clearly intended to stand as a seperate-but-related level rather than a newer version of the same level. Basically just don't send in carbon copies of ineligible levels.

To nominate a level, please PM me with your list of nominations. If you wish to modify your nominations at a later date, please resend the whole list of levels you wish to nominate, not just the changes.

Each user may nominate up to six levels from authors other than themself, up to a maximum of three levels per author. Anyone who nominates at least four levels by other authors may also nominate one of their own levels. (These self-nominations do not count towards the six nomination limit.)

So the maximum nomination value is: 6 levels from other users and 1 level of your own.

Note that levels that won a level design contest during the eligible timeframe get an automatic nomination, unless their author requests otherwise.

Nominations will be open until the end of March 1st 2021 (UTC). No additions / changes to nominations will be permitted after this date, with one exception: If a level someone has nominated is found to be ineligible for any reason and this is not discovered until after the deadline, they will be offered a chance to nominate a different level in its place.

Similar to last year, the voteoff will occur in three stages:

Stage 1
The levels will be put into random brackets, and the top ~50% from each bracket will qualify for Stage 2.

Stage 2
This will also be done in regular voteoff style. The aim here will be to get down to around a couple of remaining levels, so exact details will depend on how many levels are entered.

Stage 3
This will be done in an elimination format over multiple rounds; each round, one level gets knocked out, and the others continue onto the next round, until we have a winner.

The prize on offer will be US $10.00 for first place.

Also note that, in the interest of being reasonable, the "don't discuss levels involved in contests anywhere on the site during the voting period" rule does not fully apply to this contest; instead, it will be "do not discuss them at all within the LOTY2020 topics during voting, and don't discuss them in relation to the contest anywhere on the site".

So, that's about it! Any questions, ask here; and feel free to start nominating levels!

Contests / Level Design Contest #22
December 17, 2020, 02:39:32 PM
Welcome to another contest of the Lemmingsforums! This time the three rules have been picked by myself for winning contest #21.

A few words to new participants and forum members: If you haven't entered before, I strongly encourage you to try - even if you don't win, it's fun to participate; and we have had cases where first-time entrants have won before! There are three choices of rules given, you may enter one level for EACH one of the rules.
You may either use new format NeoLemmix, or Lix.
If you have more than one entry, they may (but do not have to) be for the same engine. Please make sure you tested your level for basic solvability before submitting and be sure to also submit any custom tileset you are using, so others have no problem playing your level. ;)

Pre contest testing: You can choose 1 person who does a bit of pre-testing for you, so that the biggest backroutes and screw-ups of your levels can be detected before the playing phase. I cannot control this so it's only a guideline, but still I would prefer not everyone knows every level before the playing phase starts. ;)

Here are the rules on how the submission deadlines work:
- Initial submission phase deadline will extend such that it's 72 hours from the time of the last submission, up to the 5th submission (inclusive). After this it no longer changes no matter what.
- Update phase deadline will not extend over the initial dead line!
- Even if you missed the cutoff date for the initial submission phase, late entries are accepted until the update phase ends. There is no penalty for a late entry, beyond that people are less likely to spend as much time on the level before voting begins.

And here is the new ruleset:

Rule 1: The Traditionalist

Create a level only using a single original/oh-no tileset. --> No tileset mixing and no VGASPECs! Also no backgrounds!

You can only use the original 8 skills from Lemmings 1 and only original object types: Hatch, Exit, endless trap, fire, water, left/right OWWs.

Also, no locked RR other than 99 and no RR under 50!

No vertical scrolling allowed! I am willing to give a tiny bit of leeway here as an NL screen can display a bit more than the standard 160 pixels of old and scrolling is entirely dependent on the zoom factor. So I'll let it slide if it's at max ~180 px in heigth. I mostly want to prevent clear vertical levels.

That means no pick-up skills for backroute fixing as well!

The only exception: You are free to have unlimited time. ;)

Rule 2: The Innovator

Create a level using a custom tileset or tilesets that was/were not based on or used in Lemmings 1,2 or 3! Also, no VGASPECs!

You must not use any of the 8 original skills or objects! This results on you having to rely on locked exits and pre-placed lemmings! (hatch/exit limiter is not enough here!) Also no water, fire, endless traps and left/right OWWs. Even if you plan only using them for decoration. ;)

The RR can be set freely as you want.

Fixes shall not violate these rules!

The only exception: You are free to have a time limit. ;)

Rule 3: Triple Trouble

Create a level that uses all 3 types of lemmings: Lemmings, Neutrals and Zombies!

All 3 types must be used in a meaningful way to the intended solution. ---> I won't let a level slide that just fills a water pit with zombies instead and calls it a day or closes them in a cave outside of the real level. ;)

Basically the zombies shall not be used like a static fire/water object that just needs to be avoided. Again, your zombies shall not just serve like a fire/water object in disguise. I want to see them being free or need to be set free so the movement part gets used!

Submission phase ends Februrary 7th 2021 at 00:00 UTC.

Ruleset in detail again: http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2246.0

Send me a personal message with your level/s and if needed tileset/s to participate. It would also be nice to also tell me the rule which each level satisfies.

Please use the following naming format:  User1_Levelname_R3V1.lvl ---> Level "Levelname" by User1   for Rule 3   Version 1 of the level

Prize selection:
- US $5.00
- One month's advertising on the forums news ticker
- Pick next contest's rules

If you let a slider slide down a wall and the wall just ends close the the floor, he won't turn around into the little wall gap actually and just walk on. Visualization: See attachment.

Is this intended or a bug? ???  I would have expected him to go to the left in the attached example level.

2) Water can stop Laserers just as much as steel can! :lem-mindblown: Good to know! This makes it much easier to reign in.

With this in mind, I definitely think the Laserer's range should not be limited.

No. You misunderstood what happened there. I cloned the laserer late so the cloned laserer had a shorter range as he did not have much steam left anymore.

EDIT: The point of the trick was to show how to shorten a laserer as a normal one would have lead to the top group drowning.

If a limit is enabled on the laserer's range I still would make it long. Probably around 140-160 pixels - so roughly standard level height.

Contests / Lemmings Forums Level Contest #21 - Results
December 02, 2020, 02:04:47 PM
Ladies and gentleman, we've got our final results! :)

Well, how to make this a bit less awkward? I think I will just post this picture. ;P

The winning level is:

"Temple Of Escher"

Congratulation to Armani's 2 levels that tied on the 2nd place as well!

"NeoLemtris"
"Marina Bay Sands"

You came in 2nd place last time and third before that, so I hope the trend continues and will will make it all the way next time! ;P

Choice for the prize for the first place is either:

- a month's advertising on the forum's news ticker
- picking the next contest's rules
- US $5.00 (PayPal would be the easiest here I think).

So I will be thinking about some nice rules for the next contest. ;)
#116
Currently the spearer can throw through a 5 pixel wall and the grenader through a 1 pixel wall in front of a lem.

Both terrain checks should start at the lem's x coordinate to prevent this.

It is also possible to throw through a thin ceiling if the lem is directly under it. This is a result because the lemming is the "feet" and the projectile starting higher at the hand.

I dicussed this with namida and we tend to only check a few pixels below the projectile to throw out extreme cases and let throwing through very thin ceilings directly at the lemming's foot be possible - an example where this is also possible would be the climber being able to climb through rough terrain sticking out at the base. So it is consistent with that.

Visualization:

So we would allow throwing through this and hitting ceilings would start if we move the upper pole a few pixels upwards.

In any case throwing through thin walls before the lem should always be prevented!

Side note: The "razor's edge" trick is possible with the spearer and if you throw it at a 1 pixel thin wall it gets stuck with 1 pixel sticking out. ;)   That is indeed consistent with builder, platformer, stacker,....

It's finally here: The new NeoLemmix Introduction Pack!

The NeoLemmix Introduction Pack is a great starting point if you want to get into Lemmings or specifically into NeoLemmix, but not nessesarily in its entirety. Especially the last rank is more as an introduction to advanced Lemmings.
The first 2-3 ranks are 100% recommended though as they introduce new features and skills in NeoLemmix.
After that it can be a good idea to maybe also take a look at some of the easier custom packs or maybe even at the first ranks of some slightly more difficult ones.
But in the end it's entirely up to personal preference. :)

1.) Download Link:

NeoLemmix Introduction Pack (V 1.9 ~ 319 KB): NeoLemmix Introduction Pack V 1.9

Contains the level pack in the newest version!

To update you only need to redownload + replace the files of the previous version.

2.) Installation:

1. Get a NeoLemmix player from: https://www.neolemmix.com/  and extract it into a folder of your choice (if you already have an up-to-date player you can skip this step)
Also make sure you got all the styles that are linked in the player section there as well and extract them into your player's "styles" folder. The pack uses some non-standard tilesets and
    therefore needs the collection.
2. Unzip "NeoLemmix_Introduction_Pack.zip" into the main folder of your Neolemmix player.  ../levels/NeoLemmix_Introduction_Pack should exist now.
3. Run "NeoLemmix.exe" and press F2 in the main menu so you can access the pack through the level browser.
4. Enjoy!

3.) Ratings:

Skills

Just Digging Into NeoLemmix:

An introduction to the basic controls of NeoLemmix as well as all of the different lemming skills the engine provides.

Objects & Functions

Follow The Arrow!:

Introduces all the different objects of the game, as well as important functions that will aid you while playing. Also, you will encounter non-original terrain styles.

Basic Training 1

Delaying The Inevitable:

Here basic tricks are being taught and your general sense for solving levels will be trained.

Basic Training 2

Fancy Fencer:

We've got a lot of stuff to cover so more tricks and training awaits you here!

Advanced Training

Walking Over Dead Bodies:

Introduces more advanced and precise tricks. Your knowledge from previous ranks will be tested as well.

Warning! This rank is dedicated to those who want to dig deeper into the mechanics of NeoLemmix. A bunch of the tricks in here appear quite rarely in custom level packs and require pretty precise execution combined with a deeper knowledge of the games' physics. So it might be a bit too much for more casual lovers of Lemmings from here on out! Be warned!

4.) Thanks to all beta testers:

Proxima, namida, Dullstar, Strato Incendus, WillLem, joshescue18, DireKrow, kaywhyn, and uberwolfie.

5.) CONTACT INFO:

Via email you can reach me at: ScavengerW@gmx.de

Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4Elfo3E1jTl-SHlOy97kwA

Further feedback is always welcome!

There will be switch ups in the level order in the future though as new skills/objects/tricks will be introduced. Therefore I recommend saving replays through the level name and not rank+position!

As we have quite a few levels this time: If after the rule voteoff the number of remaining levels is >9 due to ties, I will create 2 mixed groups semi-randomly out of the remaining levels to bring down the number even further. For all of this no tiebreakers are planned. After this, all qualifying levels will go into a final mixed voteoff.

All levels are still avialable in the discussion topic: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5145.0

Styles: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5122.0

As Dullstar's l2-classic style is quite new and likely to be used quite a bit in the future given that it's an original style. I would like to ask people to give this a "final test" - so check the trigger areas tiles etc and if something seems off to you report it to Dullstar in the dedicated topic. Rather have critical fixes now when there are just some single levels using it! ;)
This shall not sow doubt in Dullstar's work, I just think extra testing for quite central styles is a good thing especially when it's early in the life cycle!
