Hardest video games
« on: August 27, 2017, 12:11:34 AM »
Hi everyone

I thought I would start a topic asking about our hardest games we have complete. I was going to ask what has been your most hardest game you have completed without cheating, glitches are allowed I would say because some glitches requite skill.

What have been your hardest video games you have completed.

Rayman 1. :P It's considered to be a pretty hard and unfair platformer, but I have played it over and over again during the years so it's not that hard for me. :D

Touhou 6: the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is the hardest out of the five Touhou games I've beaten. If we take difficulties into consideration, though, I've beaten Touhou 8: Imperishable Night and Touhou 10: Mountain of Faith on Hard.

I've also -- just once -- beaten Repton 2 on original hardware. This game, unlike the others in the series, has no passwords, so the entire game must be beaten in one sitting. (This isn't true in the PC remake, which adds savepoints.) Admittedly, I learned how to solve the levels by completing the PC version first. Then, since I no longer own a working BBC Micro, the only times I've been able to attempt the original game have been at retro-gaming conventions I've attended. It was the fulfilment of a lifetime ambition to finally pull it off :)

Getting 100% there is tough (and I'm actually one of the odd ones that likes that game) I actually found Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door 100% even harder because:

For me, the hardest game I ever played was Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels. It was a sequel to Super Mario Bros. that was only released in Japan, but it was later released in an SNES game with Super Mario Bros. 1 to 3, and then in its 8-bit format later on in the Wii Virtual Console. It will without a doubt push your platforming skills to the limit.

Unofficially, there was a fan-made challenge to the Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time called the Uber Challenge. If you choose to accept it this game becomes insanely hard.

The Pit of 100 trials in Thousand Year Door can be totally cheesed with a Danger Mario setup. If you never improve your max HP and then use Chet Rippo to decrease it down to 5, you will always be in Danger so you can equip tons of Danger Rush badges and increase your attack power by a huge amount at all times. You can only do this once you reach chapter 7 and you have to farm the arcade a whole lot to get all those badges, but destroying Magnus Von Grapple 2.0 with one Power Bounce is super satisfying. If you equip all the other badges that boost defense and evasion when you're in Danger then many enemies can't hurt you either. The aforementioned Magnus Von Grapple 2.0's audience cannon then becomes completely hilarious. *whiff whiff whiff clink whiff whiff clink clink etc*

I tend to shy away from hard games, but I know I've completed Mario Sunshine 100% at one point... I have beaten Pokemon Puzzle Challenge on Intense with no continues a few times. Does that count for anything?

I somewhat knew about that setup because I used to see it in speedruns of these games. Personally, this is something I would never do myself as it makes the game too easy (but that's just me personally and I do not object to it if that's something someone wants to do). True that the game itself isn't as challenging to me now as it was when I was little. I used to only power up my HP (until 100 :lem-shocked:, which can't be done in the first game because the max was 50 or 55) and never my FP or BP, and still have trouble with bosses like Magnus Von Grapple 2.0. When I got older I realized that there had to be a balance with what I powered up because with a better balance comes better strategies. Powering up FP instead of HP meant more FP for more powerful moves against tough enemies/bosses, or powering up BP instead of FP or HP meant better badges in battles. That made me a better player at the game and I feel more satisfaction with that than to become a one man army.
