This is a tough one. I'm ready for a hint if nobody else has any ideas/guesses.

Yes, very tricky. The main difficulty is that {H I J Y} do not seem a very natural set -- I can't find anything those four have in common that no other letters do, and it doesn't help to narrow down whether we should be looking at letter shapes, positions in the alphabet, some form of letters-to-numbers....
