General Discussion / IPXWrapper over the internet...
« on: April 14, 2014, 04:23:52 PM »
Hi all!  I'm still alive.

I recently unearthed my copy of Warcraft II, which is awesome.  I've also made a slew of multiplayer scenarios, which is also awesome.  What's less awesome is, while I can play other people over LAN, I have no good way to play against someone remotely.

I can play over LAN thanks to this thing which emulates IPX, but there's no way to get it to communicate with other networks out-of-the-box.  Also the source code isn't a complete mess, but, it's not exactly a joy to read through either.

So, to solve this problem, I've started writing something in Java which can take the UDP packets the IPXWrapper spits out and transmit them to another network(s).  So far I can intercept packets the IPXWrapper broadcasts and then rebroadcast them on the remote network and vice-versa.  This may be enough, if it gives the IPXWrapper instances the information they need to route packets between the two networks (I'll know whether or not this is the case later today), but it's possible I may have to find a way to intercept packets from the private sockets for each IPXWrapper instance (ie each running instance of Warcraft on the network).  I haven't had a chance to fully test this thing yet.

I'm telling all of you this because I know some of you here will be better at writing something like this than me.  Network programming isn't exactly something I'm an expert in (I had one class in college).  That said, anyone have any advice or know of something I'm not accounting for?  Would anyone like to help with this?

I can send people the source code if they want it.

General Discussion / Forum History

I forget when I joined the lemmings forums, but it was a long time ago...

How much do people remember about migrating between forums?  Like Lemmings Universe, Lemmingswelt, the isamedia forum, and so on (I'm not sure I named them all).  If I remember correctly this forum is a descendant of the old forum at Lemmings Universe.  I can't really remember how we got here though.

I'm also wondering who people remember being forum regulars back in the day who aren't around anymore, such as G3K and Tumbleweed...

Level Design / Minimal Competition
« on: February 03, 2006, 11:26:05 PM »
I have an idea.

A contest in which the contestants are given a box that is 50 pixels long and tall.  You can place whatever you want inside that box (I would recommend that you build a box around the edge) as long as it doesn't go out of it at all and as long as you don't use black pieces to get rid of terrain that does overlap.

Sound good?

Lemmings Main / Lemmings official whatever
« on: January 31, 2006, 01:34:39 AM »
My English teacher wouldn't let me make a persuasive essay on what a good Lemmings level was because there were no "authoritative sources" on it, like a professor.  I thought that was the dumbest thing ever.  An actual lemmings player and level designer/critic would be a perfectly good source, certainly better than a professor.  I think we have some excellent designers right here.  I think maybe we should 'certify' people to be official experts on Lemming level designing, solving, and or critiquing.  There should be certain requirements for a certified Lemmings expert, such as a certain number of levels produced that got good reviews, or if you want to be a critic a certain number of level reviews written.  So, I'm writing this all to ask, should we do this, and if we should, what should the requirements be?

I think a solver should have to have beat the all the original Lemmings levels and a certain number of difficult player's packs.

Level Design / Beat the timer

This is what I remember, but it may not be accurate for some reason.

I was testing a level tonight, and when I was finished I had a blocker left with seven seconds left on the clock.  At five seconds I initiated nuking.  When the lemming blew up though the clock was at zero, and then it went to one minute five seconds!  I have tried to recreate this glitch, but I haven't had any success yet.  Just so Im sure I remembered correctly, if anyone has done this too tell me.  If not, tell me any time glitches you know   :-/

Tech & Research / Weird error thing

I was making a lemmings level.  Then I went to test it, and I'd been testing it about twenty times before, but now  the objects were misplaced and some of their frames would cascade dowm the screen.  I have about 10 objects, 200 terrain pieces, and 28 steel areas.  Any help?

General Discussion / Site redone
« on: August 24, 2005, 05:05:26 AM »
Well, I finally took the initiative to go to W3schools, learn a little HTML, and then make a pure HTML website (as opposed to my 100% flash made one). &#A0;It was worse than my old one (although a lot easier to update). &#A0;It was plain white text with a two box table. &#A0;Oh well. &#A0;Later I did a little more work on it, later refering to 12:00 this morning &#A0;X_X and made it a little better. &#A0;There was one thing that did get worse and it was text readablity. &#A0;I'll try to find a way to fix that. &#A0;Anyhow, if you wanna check it out, here it is

Link that goes to a rather shabby looking webpage...interesting...

Have fun with it I suppose.

EDIT: Can someone please tell me if those graphics numbers at the bottom of the page are right?  Thanks.

Level Design / Group level competition
« on: August 23, 2005, 07:24:23 PM »
Well, the idea of a group constructed level has been a success and has produced, so far, one good level.  I have an idea...

Different groups of people can present their levels to me, and I will judge the winner.  The score will be based on

Is there a puzzle? - 20 points
0 = No puzzle whatsoever OR impossible!
20 = Hard to solve

How fun is the level? - 10 points
0 = I would rather sort out ten thousand red grains of sand from ten thousand yellow ones than play this level!!!
10 = THIS LEVEL IS AWESOME.

Group aspects -

Does everything mesh well?
0 = Nothing goes together (title doesn't go with level, terrain is obviously made by different people and is shoddy because of that, etc.)
10 = Everything goes together great!

um, other rules.

Groups can be of up to three people.  You decide within your own group what the rules are for each person and what is assigned to each person.

No looking at other people's levels until the competition is over, or unless the group making the level allows you to look.

There will be two separate competitions, a lemedit competition and a cheapo competition.  Seeing as to how there are custom graphics in lemedit now though, it might not really matter.

Deadline is....uhhhhh...10/00/2005

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.......

Lemmings Main / The worst way to lose
« on: July 09, 2005, 02:20:35 AM »
I had an idea.  What if we did another level list game, only we listed the best way to lose a level!  (Best referring to stupidest most idiotic (and funniest) way to lose).  For example, on Cascade, it would be to do nothing!  Load up the level and then do it...I would laugh if I did that to be honest.  Not sure about anyone else.

Level Design / Level Idea
« on: June 27, 2005, 09:30:02 PM »
I got an idea for a level or level pack.  What if there was a level that multiple people worked on?  One person would start it, and then when they were done pass it to the next person via email or upload.  It would keep going like that.  Before the level was even started though, it would have to be decided who would work on the level and the order of people who would work on it.

There'd be some rules:

Limited number of new terrain piece per person
Limited number of new objects
No altering any existing things
Limited number of skills allowed to be added

Does anyone have an idea of how we could work out statistics and level names?

General Discussion / Clocks...need help with...
« on: June 21, 2005, 02:22:09 AM »
Well, I'm trying to make a clock. &#A0;I need a really good motor to make it run. &#A0;I've looked at all sorts of clocks in which the gears and stuff are preassembled, but the problem is this: &#A0;The hour hand shaft is a hollow tube that is lower than the minute hand shaft. &#A0;The minute hand one is inside the hour tube.

diagram:

&#A0; &#A0; minute shaft ---------> &#A0;| &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; | &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; | &#A0;|
hour shaft -------------> &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;|

(the hands are attached at the top)

Anyhow, I need a preassembled clock that looks like this...

&#A0; &#A0; hour shaft ---------> &#A0; &#A0; | &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; | &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; | &#A0;|
minute shaft ----------> &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;|
&#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0; &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;| &#A0;|

How or where can I get this? &#A0;I'm trying to build my own customized clock as an alternative, but now I can't find a place with gears! &#A0;Arg! &#A0; >:(

Help?

PS: I'm trying to make the clock from Majora's Mask.

Edit:  The diagram isn't showing up right.  Bah.  If you have a question ask me about it.

General Discussion / YOSHI'S WORLD
« on: April 28, 2005, 01:59:06 AM »
Who has played Yoshi's world?  Insane Steve made it, and because of that I didn't put it in the other games board.

Anyhow, this game is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.  Seriously.  You can find it on Insane Steve's website.  The comic that goes along with it is also great.

Oh, also, what language is that in Insane Steve?  Could you possibly give it to me or something so I could learn it?

Oh, and if you dropped that project, Insane Steve, then I encourage you to pick it up again.

I especially like the line

"Yes.  Let me go get my 5 million cubic foot tank and I will pick up the river."

Hilarious. :D

Level Design / Glitch...
« on: April 20, 2005, 07:16:41 PM »
I was in the process of building a level yesterday, and, I ran out of pieces to place (unfortunately I could've used about 200 more or so) and I had to rearrange a little and just barely finish the level.  I did accomplish this, and saved it.  When I played the level though, certain piece information was corrupted, so certain pieces would be positioned in the wrong place, be the wrong piece type, or both.

Strange.

Why do you think this is?  Also, is there any way to get to the true maximum amount of pieces without corrupting the level?

(No real request for technical help was in here (this was just interesting) so I put it in the level design board).

Level Design / New level competition
« on: April 02, 2005, 09:43:49 PM »
This competition is a competition

WHAT THAT REALLY MEANS-

I am starting a competition for lemmings levels, IN LEMEDIT. &#A0;What you have to do is make a story about the lemming's travels, and make levels corresponding to it. &#A0;You can make from 5 to 10 levels, and each level must have it's own section.

Scoring will be on-

Story quality 20 points pssble

Level difficulty 10 points pssble (If level is impossible, score is 0, very hard but beatable level gets a 10)

Is the level fun? 10 points pssble

creativity 10 points pssble

TOTAL 50 points.

Whoever gets the most points wins. &#A0;All level-story packs will be judged at the same time. &#A0;Scince this competition demands a bit of work, the deadline for levels is May 5th.

"Good luck!"-SF64
