DanielOakfield

Hello everyone, after playing Lix and lurking on the forum and IRC channel for many years I am finally releasing a selection of 140 195 levels created, mainly 2P, many with unlimited functions.

I have roughly another 100 but they use custom tiles so it will take some time to convert them.
:crylaugh:

Edit: I replaced the zip file with a new one with 10 additional levels
Edit2: I replaced the zip file with more levels, naming following Simon's request, and amending some of the levels as requested
Edit3: Cleaned up a few levels
Edit4: New levels, bug corrections, new folders organization (network/xP/hyperlodge)

Yes, we are childhood friends and have been playing multiplayer Lemmings since Amiga (1992)!
Quite a few years back we found Lix and as an online multiplayer version with a level editor, we were instantly hooked! We still play very often.

Welcome DanielOakfield, welcome to the community :lix-smile:

Nice to see more people who are playing the Lix multiplayer. We play the Lix multiplayer as a group on average once every 1-2 months, the sessions are always posted on here a few weeks in advance. We should be due one in the next month or so.

In the meantime, if you have any sessions you would like to let us know about then please let us know. I'm sure me, Simon and geoo would be interested in playing if we know about it in advance.

You can let us know in the IRC channel or by posting here on the forums in the Lix Multiplayer Dates subforum

I'm always up for playing if I'm available :lix-cool:

I'll take a look at the levels you posted over the next few days and tell you what I think of them. Regarding the custom tiles, if it's not copyrighted material and is hi-resolution then it should be ok to use them in the Lix engine, it's ultimately up to Simon if they get added to the Lix download in the future if that is your intention.

DanielOakfield

Thanks for the welcome!
Look forward to playing with you all :thumbs-up:

DanielOakfield

Little update, I added 10 levels to the file in the original post!
Enjoy and have a happy Sunday
8-)

Simon

Thanks!

I've already played matches with you a week ago, and you've clearly grown strong outside our regular forum sessions. Nice!

Your maps play distinct from the standard fare that we've included in Lix, and that makes them a fresh take. geoo will rage that you give 10 walkers instead of 80 (he'll run out immediately) and 50 blockers instead of 0 (he doesn't like them), but that's the flavor then.

I recommend not to hide things. E.g., don't choose a white background to obscure where the steam is. Since 0.10.22, Lix shows the trigger area rectangles during play when ou activate the splat ruler, and you won't be hiding the steam much.

Would you like me to include your maps in future Lix releases? Everything (besides some music) in Lix is CC0, essentially public domain.

All but one of these maps claim to be 2-player maps, only do142.txt (Athena's Home) claims to be a 4-player map. Many of your levels looked like they play equally well with 2 or with 4. I have no good sorting solution for maps that are good with both 2 and 4. I'd sort them each according to its intended number of players.

I recommend to name the files according to the level titles instead of the existing:
do<running count>.txt
I can rename the levels automatically, making the filenames all-lowercase and stripped of spaces. Or are you concerned about the ordering within the directory?

Sorry for my late feedback.

DanielOakfield

Thanks so much, Simon for taking some time to check the maps!

I appreciate everyone's playing style is different, and can't make everyone happy ;) I like diversity so that in some maps I am terrible, in some others I have my strategy and I win more easily :lemcat:

Yeah, I believe I stopped hiding parts, some levels are a few years old, but I kept them as they are for their historical value ha!

I'd be delighted if you could include my levels, of course, most of the maps are 2p; I generally do symmetrical maps so if multiple goals are present they can be played well 2/4... and so on.

Please feel free to rename the files as you need, they are not in any specific order, I will name any future levels using the naming convention (I already have a bunch more ready)!

Look forward to playing with you :cute:

Flopsy

We'll certainly have to dedicate some time to playing some of these levels in the upcoming Lix session on 18th August (topic is in Lix multiplayer dates forum https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=6806.0 :lix-cool:). Problem is because they are mostly 2 player maps, we need maps which would be suitable for multiple players per team.

Perhaps there are a few maps you could recommend we play where if there are 4-6 people for example and we have 2-3 players per Lix colour. Could be a map where it is larger, has multiple entrances and there is a lot going on usually.

Since these levels are going to get added to the Lix download anyway, I'm sure we'll have some favourites over the time spent playing them.

I also look forward to playing with you DanielOakfield, you sound like a very experienced player :)

QuoteI can rename the levels automatically, making the filenames all-lowercase and stripped of spaces. Or are you concerned about the ordering within the directory?

This can easily be averted by prepending a number (representing the order) to the name. Although in the case of a multiplayer map, which is likely going to be searched for by name rather than by order in a group, this probably isn't desirable in the first place?
My projects

Non-Lemmings: Commander Keen: Galaxy Reimagined (a Commander Keen fangame)

I recommend to keep everything visible. I can comb through the maps myself and make everything visible, but it will take a while. This combing is too short notice for Lix 0.10.26 which I'll release this weekend. I've kept your levels earmarked for one of the next releases. Ideally, you comb through the maps yourself and make everything visible!

We can still select the maps in the multiplayer session tomorrow even though they won't yet be merged into the main download.

Some maps are too big and they trigger the VRAM warning, and I'd like the merged maps not to trigger the warning. On the other hand, you have a particular style with those big maps, and it's interesting. No decision yet.

DanielOakfield

Hi Simon,

I replaced the file in the original post, here's what I modified

  • Renamed all the files as per the standard requested, small caps no spaces
  • Shrunk the map that was giving the VRAM warning
  • Changed the background color in maps with hidden traps, so that everything is visible
  • I changed the author to Hyperlodge
  • Added 25 new levels :D (more will follow at some point)

DanielOakfield

Added a few more levels to the original post. Some are 4-player levels, which seem to be preferred by you guys :)

Flopsy

4 player is a good middle ground to make your levels to generally. Even if we have more than 4 players, we could have players team up on one Lix colour.

4 player also seems to be a number we are guaranteed to get at our arranged Lix sessions. Whenever I make new maps now, I either make them to be 4 player or 5 player typically, if the map is well received. I then make more player iterations! :lix-cool:

DanielOakfield

I added a few more 4p levels and fixed a few symmetry issues. The file is updated in the original post!

DanielOakfield

I organized the levels in folders, fixed some bugs, and added more 4p levels, replaced the file in the original post!

Flopsy

Just downloaded this file and the folders are a little out of order.

It should read "network > 2P, 4P or 6P > hyperlodge > list of levels"

the file reads "hyperlodge > 2P, 4P or 6P > list of levels"

author name should come after the number of players which is the key difference

It's not a big deal but it makes it easier to unzip and compile, but other than that. Great levels and thanks for organising them into different player iterations

DanielOakfield

Hi, I corrected a few tiles/bugs, I also added 2 new levels and reorganized the folder structure as Flopsy suggested, the zip has been updated in the original post.

I still find it very redundant the way files are organized, most of the information is already in each file, so in theory, the files could be organized for example by author or the number of players, and for instance, a filter could be implemented on the root of the network folder to select a specific author or to filter out the number of players I want or not. I find it useful to have the ability to navigate the logical folders' structure however from a usability point of view as a player I'd only need to see the levels I am interested in, for example, all the 4P levels or all the levels from an author, or a combination of those.

Also at the moment, we have folders with the same names in different points of the structure, many 2P, 4P.... and also the author-named folders are duplicated.

Not a big deal of course  :cute:

Simon

Thanks for the housekeeping. I'll look at your levels again this week for inclusion in the next Lix release.

Yes, the level infrastructure and directory structure isn't ideal. It was natural to offer directory browsing, but that inflicts a tree structure on content that feels more like a database than a tree.

Simon

Thanks! I haven't merged every map yet into 0.10.27.

Lix multiplayer should be enjoyable without the helper buttons; the helper buttons reveal all trigger areas or highlight your hatches/goals.

Hidden traps and hidden flingers violate this. Hidden exits are even more problematic than hidden traps: Not only will the lix be removed, but your opponent gets a point.

You can bury the exits' trigger areas as long as the colored markers (X in opponent's color, or arrow in your color) remain clearly visible. How much burying is fine will depend on the map. On a busy map, it's better to make more parts of the exit visible than only the colored markers.

In the main Lix download, I don't want to proliferate hidden exits/traps. I should even fix my own map What's Behind the Curtain, which has hidden traps. It may be easy to guess where the hidden frogs are, but I should lead by example.

I've changed two of your maps in the already-released 0.10.27: Sleep Tight (2 players) and Wine Tasting (4 players). The colored exit markers are now clearly visible. I've left all other maps at your discretion:

I can't merge maps that recreate third-party copyrighted sprites (Doraemon, Donkey Kong, Pauline, Mario, and Meta Lemmings). I release Lix under CC0 (public domain), and Lix should remain allowed in Debian, which has strict rules.

There should be no age restriction. This is fickle. I'll err on merging no obscene level titles (please rename "My Balls"), no obscene scenery (North Pole Tales), and no politics. In the end, I can't make objective rules for this, and I'll have to judge everything case-by-case.

-- Simon

Silken Healer

If you want Lix to remain at no age restriction, there's also a level named "The," and then an abusive term for a person born to parents not married to each other.

DanielOakfield

@Simon Thank you for your instructions, all clear! I have sent you in a PM some of those levels corrected and a few new ones!

Simon

I've received them, 34 level in total.

I'll look through them in detail next week, and give you feedback by Wednesday or Thursday. I'm planning to release the next version of Lix around Sunday, February 23. Happy to include these levels.

-- Simon

Silken Healer

Would you like to schedule some 2P Lix to play these levels together to help test them out?

Simon

Ah, you meant me, not Hyperlodge.

I'm busy this week (stream on Tuesday, feedback for Hyperlodge on Wednesday) and can't schedule anything yet. I don't have to play them all to give the feedback.

-- Simon

Simon

Daniel, I think all of these 34 maps are good for inclusion. Thanks for taking the time to make all the exits and hazards visible! I'll include these maps in the next release.

I'm still planning to release 0.10.30 this weekend.
