[Android] Lemmus
« on: December 08, 2015, 04:25:53 PM »
I have developed a lemming like game for Android. Its name is Lemmus. If anyone is interested in this, I can provide a download link without any levels. But it is possible to load the levels (neolemmix dat and lvl files) from the SD-Card. This project is a free time project and I have developed it on a nexus 5. So there will be some bugs on other smartphones. In the future I will provide it on Google play for free with self-made levels. From time to time the game will show advertising and if you will support me please tab on it. Otherwise you can disable the internet connection and no advertising is shown.

Nice, I'd be keen to give it a go.

Given that it appears to use custom graphics - how exactly does loading NeoLemmix levels work? Did you include the NeoLemmix graphic sets with it too? If you did - just be aware that if you're making money off this, even just through advertising (technically, even if you aren't; but it's less likely to become a problem then), you're running the risk of copyright infringement issues if you include those that come from the official Lemmings games. You're welcome to include the ones I made though (in the editor's default listing order, my ones are everything from Tree onwards).
My Lemmings projects
2D Lemmings: NeoLemmix (engine) | Lemmings Plus Series (level packs) | Doomsday Lemmings (level pack)
3D Lemmings: Loap (engine) | L3DEdit (level / graphics editor) | L3DUtils (replay / etc utility) | Lemmings Plus 3D (level pack)

To load custom graphics:
1.   Install app
2.   After starting the app and clicking the “Load levels from SD Card” Button the app is creating a “\Lemmus\levels” and “\Lemmus\styles” folder
3.   The graphic .dat files should be copied into the styles folder and the .lvl into the levels folder
4.   After a repeated click on the “Load levels from SD Card” Button all levels will be loaded in alphabetic order and can be played

Copyright is an important topic and to avoid violations the whole code, graphic and sound is designed on my own or my helpers. And many thanks that you allow me to use your graphics.

Excellent! Result seems very promising, and I'll play your game when it's available! :)

Characters look very cute on the screenshot. Good luck pushing the game.

Here are a couple pointers, judged from the screenshot only:
  • Consider displaying (total number of lems that haven't died or exited yet), and the (save requirement). This is very important information during play. The "out" count from Lemmings 1 is next to useless, except for anticipating the last lem spawned from hatch. That is rarely necessary. By contrast, save requirement is important in every single level, as is knowledge of how many lems may be lost still.
  • Don't set time limits for levels that don't need any. Full forum thread with reasons against time limits. Since the time limit isn't a concern in most levels, maybe you don't have to display it this prominently, and free up panel space for more important info.
It's normal to miss these ideas because Lemmings 1 got them wrong, too.

Thank you for the tips. I will implement it by the next time.

Here is the download link for the test version to load custom levels and graphic files:
