Greetings!
« on: February 16, 2018, 12:35:56 AM »
Hello from the UK! I thought i'd just make a quick introductory post.

Like most (probably), my Lemmings interest stems back to the early 90's. My friend had an Acorn Archimedes and introduced me to Lemmings, as well as it being present on the school computers of the time, and from that i got the game for my Megadrive/Genesis. I was very obsessed with Lemmings as a child :D  The Archimedes port really does hit the nostalgia spot for me though, despite numerous flaws in how the gameplay worked, the music and general presentation is still incredible in my opinion. I have visited this site on and off over the years but never got around to being active until recently.

I am also a serial game modder and have been messing around with that kinda thing for years, with games such as C&C, various simracing games and Doom (i have a large and ever growing catalogue of Doom maps and am pretty active in that community), and of course Lemmings. I remember making some Lemmings levels many, many years ago, with a program called LemEdit (iirc), although they are long gone now. I also remember playing some classic addon level packs like MazuLems back then.

I recently discovered the NeoLemmix port and the impressive array of modding tools available for that and have been making a few levels. I'm impressed and relieved at how quick and easy it is to create things for Lemmings - this is coming from Doom mapping where it is easy to spend literally 100+ hours working on a sole map depending on how ambitious and large it is. It's great to see a port that is still actively supported by the community and has great editing and modding tools - i think these are such important assets to the longevity of any classic game.

IRL i'm an engineer and huge car nut, and have worked in motor racing on and off for a while now.

Anyway, seeya around!
Scotty

Welcome to the forums Scotty

Nice to see more new members even in 2018. We have plenty of content on here if you're into Lemmings, most of that stuff will be available on NeoLemmix.

A lot of people say how great NeoLemmix is compared to other Lemmings engines like Lemmini and SuperLemmini. NeoLemmix is more for the people who want to make great puzzle levels where people don't need to worry about execution in real time and there are a lot of people who enjoy that aspect of the game.
However it's recommended that if you're working on content that you switch over to v12.xx.xx of NeoLemmix (any v12 is fine) because there's a big difference between working with that and v10.

If you're into multiplayer Lemmings then we host regular Lix sessions on here if you want to get involved in those, they are a lot of fun and we play new levels at nearly every session now. Just look out for sessions in the Lix subforum, there's nothing arranged at this moment but watch that space :)

If you're into modding then that's great because both NeoLemmix and Lix are open source and everyone is encouraged to get involved and experiment with them. The more people who understand the coding of the games then the better and stronger the community becomes :)

I'm also from the UK myself and quite a lot of us are from Europe in general with a fair few in the states. Nice to see more UK presence, where Lemmings was born!

Anyway if you're ever unsure about anything you can always ask on the forums or if you want to chat to some of us directly we have an IRC channel here. It's recommended to pop into the chat in the late evening (UK time) otherwise there might be no one there.
We generally hang out in there when not making posts on the forums and banter when we're not talking about Lemmings.

We're a really nice bunch so don't be shy :)

Thanks for the welcomes :D

re. NeoLemmix, i *think* i currently have the latest "new format" version. I like that port as it is still supported and updated regularly with a good and accessible editor, and is indeed good for casual play, although i don't mind the classic execution mechanics personally, as long as things don't require insane pixel perfect tricks and so on!

re. multiplayer, aside from a couple of games many years ago on console i haven't really explored it. I'll have to check out Lix though.

re. IRC i think i saw a Discord mentioned in a thread somewhere, if that is active i'll check that out for sure :P

PS - Sonic is the other game i obsessed over when i was younger :D

You might find this thread useful then for your Lemmings level making :)

Most of these tilesets are already included with the v12 styles download anyway, the only one which isn't at the current moment is Mystic Cave

Welcome to the forums Scotty!
Looking forward to playing your levels! :)

If you are interested: There is still time to join the recent Level Design contest #14: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=3636.0
It's still being held in the old format (before V12) as the jump from V11 to 12 was right in the middle of the submission phase. All contests afterwards will be in the new format of course ;)
Don't hesitate to join, as new contestants still can do very well in these and it's a lot of fun anyways. The last contest was also won by a newcomer! :)

Also don't hestitate to join one of our Lix multiplayer sessions! These tend to be a ton of fun.

It's also nice to see another C&C fan here! I played through (and still continue to do so) a ton of original and custom C&C stuff on my Youtube channel if you want to check it out. There's also my Dune tileset for NeoLemmix if you haven't found it already ;)
Maybe we can also play a few rounds of C&C in the future!

I think I'll end this post with a simple KANE LIVES IN DEATH! :XD:
