SNES Manual

"Look what I can do!" Climb; Float; Blow Up Blockers (he he); Block; Build Bridges; Dig Tunnels – across, diagonally, and down

"Uh oh! I'm going to have to work fast if I'm going to save my buddies"

"Two blockers are required to stem the flow of Lemmings going over the edge. Now a quick leap over the side...I hope my brolly opens... Touchdown!"

"I could probably climb this cliff but my buddies wouldn't able to. Time for a spot of bridge building I think. Now to dispense with my blocker and let the rest of my pals through."

"Another Blocker here and it's tunnel time! Oops! Mustn't get my feet wet. Another bridge I think."

"Now if I get rid of my last Blocker all the guys will troop through while I tackle this one-way pillar. I'm bushed!"

"Another safe landing, a quick dig through in the direction of the arrows and its everybody out."

LOADING INSTRUCTIONS

Always switch off your console for at least 30 seconds before loading the game. Failure to do so may result in virus contamination of the Lemmings Game Paks. See the virus warning and the warranty notice on page 16 for further information.

▪Make sure the power is off and there are no Game Paks inserted.
▪Insert the Game Pak (the label must be facing you), and push when it locks into place.
▪Switch the monitor/TV then the console on by putting the "Power" switch to "ON".
▪Lemmings is best played by using the controller. Using a mouse (which this game is released before the pointer) will not work. A second controller, plugged into the second-player port, is required for a two-player game.

                  Lemmings
                  The Game

An intriguing game in which you help hordes of mindless but delightful creatures — known as Lemmings — escape over 125 hostile enviroments.

Lemmings drop through a trapdoor in each level and, as they are creatures of very little brain, they need all the help they can get to survive the dangers that lie within.

Lemmings are very cute but also very dumb. They will mindlessly walk off cliffs, into water, hazards and traps or they will mill around bumping into walls or other obstacles unless you help them get their act together. You can assist them by giving them certain skills and powers that will help them get through each level of the game. Once you have assigned skills (shown as icons on the bottom of the screen in each level) to certain Lemmings they can use those skills to help them and their fellow Lemmings cope with the dangers that swround them. Each level of the game is an increasingly difficult environment that the Lemmings must navigate. At each level you have a different number of skills available for assignment; you have different times available for mastering that level and you have varying numbers of Lemmings that you must save to complete that particular level.

A quick brain, the ability to plan ahead and lifetime's dedication to the Save A Lemming Campaign are required to get the right Lemming to perform the right action at the right time. A forgotten blocker, a rogue miner or a misplaced bridge could spell disaster for every Lemming on screen.

Before Play Commences

Load Lemmings, as per the instructions on page 9, until you see the Main Menu screen.

Lemmings is organised into five increasingly difficult game categories: FUN, TRICKY, TAXING, MAYHEM and SUNSOFT. The FUN category consists of around 30 levels and is designed to familiarize you with the game concept and how to work with Lemmings skill attributes. You don't have to start with this category. You can go directly to any of the higher skill categories but we suggest that you begin with at least a few of the levels in the FUN category to get the feel of the game before proceeding to the more difficult categories. TRICKY, TAXING and MAYHEM increase in difficulty, with the MAYHEM and SUNSOFT levels being the most difficult. Each of the game categories has around 30 levels except for the SUNSOFT difficulty, which has 5.

PASSWORDS

After you complete each level you are shown a password on screen. Make a note of it, as you will be able to go directy to that level when you play Lemmings again and don't wish to replay a level you have already mastered.

Icons (from left to right)
1 Increase and/or decrease flow of Lemmings onto the level*
The following are the skills you can give to Lemmings
2 Climber – climbs vertical surfaces
3 Floater – a brolly (umbrella) opens to ensure a safe descent
4 Bomb to dispatch single Lemmings (one way to get rid of Blockers)
5 Blocker – stands with arms outstretched to block the passage of fellow Lemmings and taps his toe
6 Bridge Builder – builds bridges
Each builder has only twelve building bricks. When a Builder has laid his twelfth brick he turns to look and shrug at you for a moment...if you click on him again he will lay another twelve bricks (if you have any Builders remaining), and so on until you run out of Builders. If you don't click on him after he lays his twelfth brick he becomes a Walker again.
7 Basher — digs horizontally, will only dig when a suitable surface is directly ahead of him
8 Miner – uses a pick to dig diagonally down
9 Digger – burrows vertically
10 Pause – gives you time to think
11 Nuke 'Em destroys all Lemmings – should you find yourself in a 'no-win' situation (double press to activate)
Each skill may be only used a limited number of times (shown above each icon).
The green display to the right of the icons depicts the whole level.
The square cursor on that display depicts the current area shown onscreen.
*only in One Player mode

Directly above the icon panel are (from left to right):
Lemming identifier, plus the number of Lemmings currently under the cursor
Number of Lemmings currently occupying the level
% of rescued lemmings
Time remaining to complete level

The Two-Player Game
In two-player mode the screen is vertically divided in two by a Lemming level indicator. This indicator displays the amount of Lemmings each player has successfully rescued from the level. The left player controls blue Lemmings the right, green. Each player has his own exit and competes to get as many Lemmings (either his or her opponents) safely through it. Each player has 40 Lemmings in his team on the first level but on later levels this number is dependent on how many Lemmings were saved by individual players the previous level (i.e. Lemmings saved are added to players' initial 40 for the next level).
Lemmings instinctively head off in the direction of their own exit as soon as they
enter the level. Each player has his own set of skill icons.
Pressing Start pauses the game.
Both players have to press on Nuke 'Em for Lemming annihilation to take place.
The two-player game is played until both players fail to rescue any Lemmings.

Some Points to Note
Steel (shown as square plates and usually used to contain liquids) cannot be dug through or exploded away.
Builders stop constructing bridges:
(i) When they run out of bricks
(ii) If the bridge hits a solid object
(iii) If the Lemming hits his head while building
Miners and Diggers keep digging until they dig through the layer, after which they fall through the bottom of the layer.
Bashers keep digging until there is no more material in front of them to dig.
A Lemming designated as a Climber or Floater retains these skills until the current level is ended or until he dies. A Lemming given both these skills is referred to as an Athlete.
All other skill icons take effect as soon as you click on a Lemming – make sure that there is something to dig in front of a Basher or he will give up right away and you will have wasted a skill.

I like the SNES, NES, and the Sega Mega Drive version manual of Lemmings although I hate the Mark Tsai and the Windows 95 version of the manual (the Mark Tsai version and the Windows 95 version has exclamations in parenthises in it due to my behavior concern and adjustment disorder). I also like the Atari Lynx version of the manual. I will post them later.

In a memo inside Lemmings 2: The Tribes, Tony Williams asked David Jones for CD music to play in the Tandy Video Information System port of Lemmings. The music will not work due to the Yamaha-cloned AdLib Gold FM soundchip. The CD music by PC Music was made in 1993 in the porting. PC Music converted the music from FM to remastered music (sometimes leading to errors) to suit the CD-ROM. Included is the intended intro music.

Here's what the instructions of Lemmings Paintball for Scratch will look like.

Instructions:
Foreword
Welcome to the Scratch port of Lemmings Paintball! This port is decicated to the 35th anniversary of the Lemmings series from 1991 to 2026. With conversions of MIDI music to remakes from FL Studio, Microsoft Wave audio exports to clean audio, AVI conversions to GIFS then remastered to remove lossy compression, and graphics conversion to anti-aliasing, this port of Lemmings Paintball is deluxed up to attract Lemmings fans, former Lemmings players, former DMA Design workers, former Visual Sciences workers, former Psygnosis workers, the majority of Lemmings Forums (at lemmingsforums.net), gamers with early nostalgia, retrogamers, Scratchers, and the British to celebrate! Read this manual before you play this game.

Introduction
Everyone knows the Lemmings. Green, furry, totally harmless...
Oh yeah?
Tool 'em up with a pump-action paint gun and before you can sing, "Who wanna be a painter man?" They'll be spraying the town white with a hint of plum and covering you in a variety of hard-wearing finishes.
Gloss? No problem. Eggshell? You got it. Woodchip? Whatever you like sir, so long as it doesn't clash with the curtains.
Lemmings Paintball puts you in control of up to four helpless Lemmings. They'll fall from the sky into a cuddly isometric landscape, then you've got to do the point-and-click until they've found the flag(s) that are their passport to the next level. Each level is harder than the last, and along the way you'll have to solve no end of tricky puzzles involving levers, gates, sliding blocks, blazing fires, huge balloons and gallons and gallons of paint. Not to mention the enemy Lemmings who have paint guns of their own, a bad case of trigger paw, and an overwhelming urge to cover you in more paint than the Sistine Chapel ceiling in Vatican City.

Access Code Screen
When you complete a level of Lemmings Paintball, you will be given an access code so that you don't have to replay levels you've already finished and create a digital note of it. You can then enter the access code on the Access Code Screen to skip completed levels in the future.
Access codes in Lemmings Paintball are made up of numbers. To enter an access code, move the cursor to each number in turn and click. To delete the last number you entered, click on "Delete". To enter the complete access code, click on "OK". If you have entered a valid access code, the table on the left of the screen will show you the last level on each difficulty that can be played. You will be returned to the Main Menu. If you enter an invalid access code or a Windows 95 level access code, it will be ignored. The old access code will be restored and you will be returned to the Main Menu.
Every time a new level on each category is completed, your access code will change. You can return to this screen to view your current access code. Remember that your current access code is also displayed on the Completion Screen. During Network Play, access codes are unnecessary as all the two-player levels are accessible. Your solo access code will be unaffected.

Panel Icons: Each Lemming on the level is represented by one of the icons on this panel. Keys being carried by the Lemming are shown in the 3 small boxes. When the box is filled with a colour, the Lemming is carrying a key of that colour. The gauge underneath shows how much paint the Lemming has left in his gun. The colour of this gauge represents the Lemming; it is the same as the highlighter underneath the Lemming's feet.
When you start a level, one to four floating trap doors will open and the Lemmings will fall through onto the landscape below.

Starting a Level
Each Lemming is marked by a coloured highlighter which corresponds to one of the four panel icons. One Lemming will be highlighted with a star, while the others will be highlighted with small circles. The Lemming marked by a star is the lead Lemming. When the star is filled, you are in control of that lead Lemming and the other Lemmings in its group.
Your aim is to help the Lemmings collect the flags dotted around the landscape. There can be up to four flags on any one level. If there is more than one flag, all of them have to be collected to complete the level. Remember that each Lemming can only collect one flag. When a Lemming has collected a flag, the appropriate panel icon will indicate this.

Moving the Lemmings
Once the Lemmings have fallen out of the trapdoor, you will see a paw-shaped cursor somewhere on the screen. When you move the mouse, the cursor moves too. As you move the cursor around the screen, it will indicate whether or not the Lemmings can move to that area. An outstretched paw means t he area is accessible. A waving finger means the area cannot be reached.
To select the Lemmings you want to move, simply click on them
individually, or click on their appropriate panel icon. The lead
Lemming will be the one you select first.

Moving Lemmings you Can't See
If you cannot see a Lemming, you can use the panel to select or focus on a single Lemming or a group of Lemmings. Right click on the appropriate panel icon to focus on a Lemming and make it the leader of its group. If you left click on the panel icon while the Lemming is offscreen, the screen will again focus on the Lemming and the rotating arrow will appear above its head to indicate you are forming a group.

Collecting Flags
To complete a level, your Lemmings need to collect all the flags located on the level. There can be up to four flags on any one level.
To collect a flag, make sure there are no obstacles between the selected Lemmings and the flag. Move the cursor over the flag until it turns into a thumbs-up sign, then click. The Lemmings will walk to the flag and the lead Lemming will take it. Remember, each Lemming can only collect one flag, so you may need to change the leader of the group by double-clicking.
When you select a Lemming, a rotating arrow will appear above his head. When you have selected all the Lemmings you want to move, click on an area of the screen which the cursor indicates is accessible (shown by an outstretched paw). This will form the Lemmings into a group and move them in formation to that point.
When a Lemming bumps into an obstacle, after a short pause for thought, he will attempt to find a path to the point indicated. Sometimes, however, the Lemming will not be able to work out a path, and you will have to move him around the obstacle by clicking a direct path from where it is standing.
Note: If you double-click on a Lemming, the screen will focus on that Lemming and he will become the leader of his group. This can be useful for collecting certain objects as he is the leader of a group that will pick up an object.
If it's the last flag on the level, you can award yourself a brief period of rejoicing because that means the level's complete!
Now for the next one...

Using the Paint Guns
Each Lemming is equipped with a paint gun loaded with paint. Each of the panel icons carries a gauge showing how much paint is in each Lemming's gun.
You will sometimes find your Lemmings coming under a paint attack from enemy Lemmings patrolling the level. To engage them in a bout of paint battling, select one or more of your Lemmings and press S to fire. Move the cursor around to aim shots. Enemy Lemmings only have to be hit once to be painted out of the level, but it only takes one splat to knock out your Lemmings too, so be aware...

Using Levers
Dotted around many of the levels are levers which operate lifts or other items of machinery.
To operate a lever, you will need to make sure there are no obstacles between the selected Lemmings and the lever. Move the
cursor to the lever until it turns into a thumbs-up sign, then click. The Lemmings will walk to the lever and the lead Lemming will push it down. This will operate the feature connected to that lever.

Collecting Keys
On some levels, you will come across barriers that have to be unlocked using a key before a Lemming can pass through. Therefore, the Lemming needs to collect a key before he can raise the barrier. Keys are hidden inside exploding boxes. When you come across a box like this, make sure there are no obstacles between the box and the selected Lemmings. Move the cursor over the box until it turns into a thumbs-up
sign, then click.
The Lemmings will walk to the box, the lead Lemming will squeeze it until it pops, and the key will be revealed. Click on the key and it will be taken by the lead Lemming. If you now look at the lead Lemming's panel icon, one of the three small boxes will be shaded. This shows that the Lemming is carrying a key of that particular colour. Once the Lemming has a key, he will be able to raise a barrier that was previously locked. If a Lemming carrying a key is hit by a paintball, the key will return to its original position.

Riding Balloons
Sometimes, you will come across a large balloon floating above the ground.
This can be used by a Lemming to fly to another part of the level. Again, make sure there are no obstacles between the selected Lemmings and the balloon. Move the cursor to the balloon until it turns into a thumbs-up sign, then click.
The Lemmings will walk to the balloon and the lead Lemming will take it. If you look at the appropriate panel icon at the bottom of the screen, you will see that it shows the balloon.
Note: It is possible for a Lemming to collect more than one balloon. In fact, he can collect one balloon of each colour.
The balloon last collected is shown on the appropriate panel icon. When you have used it, the balloon previously collected is shown, and so on.
To use the balloon, move the pointer to the panel icon and click on the balloon. The Lemming will float across the play area until he reaches a barber pole of the same colour where he will fall back to the play area.

Lifts
Around the landscape, you will encounter lifts. These are sections of landscapes that can move up or down and are sometimes triggered by levers. To use a lift, just make sure there is a Lemming standing on the ground that will move.

Moving Platforms
Around the landscape, you will encounter moving platforms.
These are blocks that move between sections that would otherwise be inaccessible. To use a moving platform, first make sure you have only one Lemming in the group and move the cursor over the stationary platform until it changes to a thumbs-up, then click. If the platform moves before the Lemming reaches it, the Lemming falls off.

Pressure Pads
Hidden around the landscape are blocks that trigger objects to do things. For example, a lift can be made to move up or down by standing on a block near it. On more difficult levels, you may not be able to see the effect of standing on a pressure pad.

Duplicators
When one of your Lemmings has been eliminated, you can duplicate one of your remaining Lemmings using a duplicator. To use a duplicator, you must have fewer than four Lemmings available. Select one Lemming and move the cursor over the duplicator until it changes to a thumbs-up. Click and after a while, twin Lemmings will appear at the back of the duplicator. Add more paint to a Lemming's paint gun by getting him to collect a paintball bonus. These are yellow paintballs which bounce on the ground.

Slippery Blocks
On some of the ice-styled levels, there are slippery blocks. Once a Lemming has stepped onto a slippery block, he will slide across until he reaches a normal non-slippery block.
Note: Some slippery blocks are connected to pressure pads hidden around the landscape.

Trampolines
If a Lemming falls onto a trampoline while attempting to reach an area where you have clicked, he will bounce forwards in the direction where he was heading, hopefully clearing any obstacles in his path. If you are on a platform above a trampoline, you can use the trampoline by clicking on it.

Paintball Bonuses
To get a Lemming to pick up a paintball, make sure that there are no obstacles between the selected Lemmings and the paintball. Move the cursor over the paintball and click.
The selected Lemmings will walk to the paintball and the lead Lemming will take it. The Lemming's paint gun gauge will register the extra ammunition. If your lead Lemming already has a full paint gun, he will not be able to pick up any more paintballs.

Catapults
To use a catapult, move the cursor over it until it changes to a thumbs-up then click. The group of Lemmings will form a line and use the catapult in turn.
Note: Catapults are sometimes hidden inside exploding boxes.

Time Bonuses
Give yourself some extra time to complete a level by getting a Lemming to collect a time bonus. These are stopwatches which float above the ground. To get a Lemming to pick up a time bonus, make sure there are no obstacles between the selected Lemmings and the bonus. Move the cursor over the bonus and click. The selected Lemmings will walk to the bonus and the lead Lemming will take it. The timer in the top right corner of the screen will register the extra time.

Point Bonuses
Score some extra points by getting a Lemming to collect a point bonus. These are bronze-coloured pots.
To get the Lemmings to pick up a point bonus, make sure there are no obstacles between the selected Lemmings and the bonus. Move the cursor "beyond" the bonus and click. The selected Lemmings will walk through the bonus and the points will be added to your total score.

Pausing
Click on the "Paws" icon to pause the game. You will then be offered the in-game menu. Move the mouse to highlight the option you require, then click to select it.

Completion Screen
"success"
You will have completed a level successfully if you collect all the flags on the level before the wasted time runs out.
Click on OK to return to the Objective Screen. The next level will be selected and available to play. Take a digital note of your access code to access this level when you play the game another day.

"you failed"
You will have failed to complete a level if all your Lemmings are killed, or if the timer reaches zero before you have collected all the flags. Clicking on 'OK' will allow you to play the level again. Clicking on 'Return' will take you back to the Main Menu.

Keyboard Commands
Main Menu: UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT CURSOR ARROWS: Navigate round option screens
SPACE: Select options or skip through intro screens any time
Ingame: P: Pause game
LEFT/RIGHT CURSOR ARROWS: Select Lemming groups
1, 2, 3, 4: Select Lemming 1, 2, 3 or 4 as lead Lemming
7, 8, 9, 0: Use balloon with Lemming 1, 2, 3 or 4.

Starting a Two-Player Game
Here is a description of how to battle with other Scratchers in Lemmings Paintball for Scratch 3.0. To do this, you need a user account. Click on the two-player icon with two Lemming heads connected by a bolt. Typing in names are unnecessary; the game chooses your Scratch username. While Paintball establishes the Internet connection to the Scratch cloud servers, your username is in the wait list. Your opponent's username will appear sometime while in the list. The "Play" button is transparent by default (meaning that it can't be clicked). A flashing username in red means the Scratcher is willing to play. Click on the other username except for yourself to invite a play session. Your username will flash red. If the other Scratcher denies the invite, your username will stop flashing. If the Scratcher approves the invite, both will flash red and the "Play" button is opaque. You will be presented the two-player level select screen. Click on the level you want to play, then click on "Post" to send the level. Click on "Return" to go back. You can't pause during two-player gameplay and you can't also have two-player passwords.
