Level Editors
« on: June 15, 2009, 02:42:56 AM »
We should make a list of level editors and where to get them.  It should be also noted which games and what version they edit.

LemEdit and Lemmix edit original, look for download links on Lemmings Archive.

Oh yes.  That.  There was mention of a lemmings 2 editor on the old forums.

Anyone remember when Cheapo was expanded to support more file formats than MIDI? Anybody have that version floating around?

I believe I do somewhere.  I'll dig it out.  Though the only other format I know of it supporting is .mod, though there may be others.

Of course I remember; I did that! :P

Though the only other format I know of it supporting is .mod, though there may be others.

I believe I've made it support SPCs (file format for music tracks from Super Nintendo game ROMs) also.  I guess it wouldn't be too difficult to add additional formats, but then again, Cheapo is kinda dead these days.

I still have it around!  Don't know where to upload it, though!

I suppose the Cheapo section of the Lemmings File Portal is as good a place as any.

Yeah, it does support SPC's!

Sometime you need to make it support .xm files, which are basically similar to .mod files.

It may already be supported to some extent.  If you couldn't get it to work directly with .xm files, try renaming the .xm file extension to .mod and see if that works (although Windows like to hide file extension nowadays, so you may find changing the file extension a little more difficult to do).

Cheapo Lemmings
By Peter Spada

Download here, including editor.

Actually, that is the incomplete version. Not all styles and levels are in there! Here's the complete version:

http://membres.lycos.fr/createmania/lemmings3.html

Just go to Cheapo.zip and Cheapo2.zip.

There's also the editor GuyPerfect is working on!  Incomplete, though...  unless he's just holding off on releasing it.

I just downloaded Lem3Edit out of curiosity... I'm amazed at how easy it is to use!  I know that Lemmings 3 isn't as popular as 1 or 2, but knowing that there's potential for custom level creation might help breathe new life into the old game.

Not to detract my previous post, but after my initial gush of enthusiasm I do realise the shortcomings of Lem3Edit for creating custom levels - such as not being able to conjure up new tiles from scratch instead of cloning existing ones, for example. It does make editing Lemmings 3 a bit impractical, but still certainly do-able. :) This just increases my respect for Clam Spammer for having fashioned 30 levels of his own. As for being "amazed", well, I was pleasantly surprised by the interface when I loaded it up at first. It's good stuff! I'm "amazed" that I didn't give it a try sooner!

Heh, I'll try to tone down my oh-wow-gosh reactions in future.  :P It comes from being away from the forums for a while and then coming back to find so many new delicious-looking pies to dip my finger into, if you'll forgive the dodgy metaphor. :D

Lemmings 3 specifies terrain objects in external files that are shared by all levels, so you won't be able to make your own like you can for Lemmings 2.
