I haven't made levels in, well, years now, but I seemed to be obsessed with climbers, probably because they are generally under-utilized and there are tons of puzzles you can make using them. The fact that making a lemming a climber can be both a good and bad thing makes their dynamics really interesting. I try to mix it up, although I do have several levels that involve much building. Really, I don't have a problem with building. The problem is the "hero lemming" concept, with one lemming doing everything (read: building!), paving a way for the others.

Short and sweet levels are the best! There's a time and a place for the longer, more involved (time-wise) levels, but they should be the exception, rather than norm.

The look of this forum sure brings back memories...! I know I don't post often anymore, but it's great to see the community is still around.

Thanks, Adam! :)

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "a few hours".

I thought this place was gone for good. Glad it's back!

Games can be surprisingly insightful into many areas of research. Think of all the AI research that has been done with just Chess. And Lemmings is way more complicated than that! I'll admit I haven't read the paper, but it sounds like something I kind of wanted to do if I ever decide to go to grad school, so maybe I will sit down and read it...

(Side note: I found out that someone from Thailand did a computer science-y research project on a map I made for Warcraft III. It wasn't the same level (advanced high school), but it's still crazy what you can find on the Internet...)

I get the same issue in DOSBox now...
(I don't get this issue through just using XP though...)

Interestingly, this didn't happen before, so I'm guessing it has something to do with the latest version of DOSBox, or maybe not. You might want to try an older version of DOSBox (the new changes don't seem to have any positive impact on Lemmings so you wouldn't be missing anything there) and see if that clears up the problem.

Isn't that just a play on "Smile if you love Lemmings"? Pretend the 5 is an S and you get "Smiles" at the beginning.

Wow. Archives for the win! I wasn't around when that site was active, but I vaguely remember it. It seems all the level packs are archived there too! Not sure how many of those packs I already have, but could be interesting to go back and play through them...

I haven't made any levels in a couple of years  :(

But when I did, the types of names I used were pretty varied, but include:
1) A popular/cliche saying or common phrase that has something to do with some aspect of the level
2) Literal description of the situation/what the level looks like
3) An allusion to an at-first "obvious" solution that doesn't actually work (because of traps or some other reason).
4) A more subtle allusion to an aspect of the actual solution (like geoo pointed out), but this is more difficult... and is best combined with 1)
5) Song title that's related to the level concept
6) Allusion to a classic Lemmings level (or a level of another author)

And
7) A reference to how the level was created, when I got to name the collaborative level "Collaboration" (boring, but it fit :P )

Hey, Nuntar! (or should I say Ahribar?) I remember that we both joined the forums at about the same time, almost 3 years ago now. Wow, time flies, I almost said 2 years...

Good to see you're still around. Most people around these parts are in a similar situation -- busy, and not really playing Lemmings much or at all nowadays.

Good luck with your novel and with teaching if you pursue that route. Our schools really do need more good math teachers.

Help & Guides / Re: We All Fall Down

UGH, HATE

I seem to remember it was much easier (read: trivial) on my old DOS version... none of this digging every freaking lemming (where one ALWAYS decides to ignore you. ALWAYS) nonsense >_>

Your version must have had an incorrect safe falling distance, which let Lemmings fall safely from a slightly higher height than normal. As you can imagine, this would make We All Fall Down trivial.

Hey, just checkin in, I'm still alive.  :)

My laptop's hard drive died last month. It gave me a fair bit of warning, so I was able to get pretty much everything backed up. I forgot to back up my Firefox bookmarks though, and these forums were one of those "out of sight, out of mind" kind of things for me recently.

Late last year, I was working on a database for the Lemmings Remake, but then the server I was using to host that died. It's up and running now, but I had lost interest and was busy with school by that time. Maybe if I started that back up again some people would come back to contribute to the Lemmings Remake, but at this point I'm not sure...

Nice  :) I'm sure the full set would look really cool, though I'm curious as to how you plan to do the bomber!
