Lemmings Touch - New Lemmings game on the way!
« on: September 09, 2013, 11:44:37 PM »
Seems this completely went under the radar.  I just found out about it today!  It's called Lemmings Touch, it's going to be for the PS Vita, and as the name suggests it seems to have a lot of emphasis on touch controls.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_eCsc-7_UQ

Good to see Lemmings is still considered viable enough for them to make a new game  :D  On the other hand, it's for a console that many people haven't bought so it'll be in a similar place to the PSP version.  Also it looks like they're recycling a lot of assets from the PSP version... which might be exactly why it is even able to be made.  But hey, new puzzles!

Yeah, I don't have any new-school consoles. But the PSP version was already quite well-received, and with Luis we had a very active PSP user in the community.

I'm most interested in the controls. Mouse in one hand, with the other hand permanently hovering over skill hotkeys, is by far the quickest input method. The follow-up is probably a touchscreen replacing the mouse in that setup. Clones was the first game to have freely-mappable skill hotkeys, per default all on one hand's keyboard keys. I'm still envious that we didn't think of that before I saw it there. ;-)

The Vita obviously doesn't have a keyboard, so gestures might be the best for it, but I assume they're uncommon and hard to learn for casual players. Apparently, the Vita version has settled for always-highlight, i.e., selecting the lemming only highlights it, selecting a skill then immediately assigns it to the highlighted. This is doable as long as there is few multitasking, and if there are no time-critical assignments into a dense bunch.

I was never planning on buying the PSP Vita. Maybe this will change my mind. I see they brought back one of the special levels, that was in the PSP, called "Chain Reaction". The level is in 2:47. Also the one in 1:07, looks like Crystal Point. I looked at the skill number and they match. The exit for that theme is now a pipe. The background of the Crystal level is now a blue cave. At first it looked like a sewer, since the terrains were pipes. I'm interested in see the new levels of the original five themes.

I want that game, it looks quite challenging and fun.

My brothers got a PSP Vita so I might maybe get him to buy the game

I don't like the way they walk in this one. Their back is not standing straight up, like in many other Lemmings games and it's leaning down a little.

Gah, what's the freaking point? No one has a Vita anyway.

They should focus on adding the level editor from the PSP version to the PS3 version of Lemmings.

To be honest, I don't feel comfortable having to buy the PSP Vita, because I thought I didn't need it, since I'm satisfied with my PSP 3000. The Vita sold less, than the original PSP. I still want to play the new levels and maybe build them in Lemmix, afterwards. Not all of them, because I see the teleport has return. Speaking of Lemmix, I still haven't gotten around in building the Lemmings PS3 levels in Lemmix.

You know, you have to wonder why they haven't released an official Lemmings game for Android (and maybe iOS) yet. There's a few lemmings clones on there that seem to do fairly well, so an official game should earn them some cash...

They did, almost a year ago. It seems to be a paywalled version of the PSP game.

(Honestly, though, I have no interest in what Sony do with their, IMO, unappealing rendition of the franchise with their weird freaky beaky little birdmen lemmings. It's not what it once was, and I don't think that will change unless it ends up back in the hands of those who created it, which seems unlikely. I think that the future of it is with things like Lemmini, Lix, and so on. :P)

That Lemmings PSP mobile is inferior to the original PSP version. It has no level editor, the water doesn't move and it's not really free. You have to pay for the other levels.

Hardly counts. It's only for "Playstation Mobile" devices which is just higher-end Sony devices and a VERY limited range of other brand's devices. Doesn't even include Galaxy.

There is likely a political hurdle at play ("political in the sense of internal corporate politics, not government politics") clearly illustrated by the types of devices being supported.  It's well known that general-purpose mobile platforms like Android and iOS are eating into console game sales (particularly portable game consoles), especially for (but hardly limited to) the so-called "casual games" category.  Thus for a company like Sony primarily in the console games business, it can be a very complex matter in how to deal with this mobile space.

Oh, I agree, but it does still exist. ;) I'd imagine, given Sony's conflict of interest as far as this sort of thing goes, it's the best that can be expected, though.

I'm really sorry for the double-post, but I stumbled across this interesting little nugget of information, from here;

Quote
According to an interview with executive producer James Harkins on The Average Gamer, the platform holder has collaborated with various fansites to select the best stages from earlier games.

I'm just left asking one thing: When, or did they just never come here?

I seriously feel like I've missed something, here! Unless, of course, they don't mean Lemmings fan-sites.

I can't think of another Lemmings fansite that is as active as this one. Maybe their just going to PlayStation forums.

Yeah, same here, and that's what I was thinking, too. The wording used seems to be extremely vague, and they certainly don't outright say "Lemmings fan-sites"...

What I like about the new Lemmings is there's a villain now. I wonder what he does. If he was a boss, how will that work with Lemmings mechanics? I rarely see a puzzle game with bosses. In Lemmings, any level that is hard for you to solve is a boss.

Think monsters like in L3 that are harmed if they're in a bomber's radius. That's my idea of how a boss would work in Lemmings. (Potential idea for LPIII? ...Nah, too much effort...)

What I like about the new Lemmings is there's a villain now. I wonder what he does.
Well, there have been bad guys in the series before - The Lemmings Chronicles had the Potato Beast, Psycho Buzzard, and Lemme Fatale monsters, Lomax had Evil Ed (if Evil Ed really counts, since Lomax is a platformer ;P), and Lemmings Revolution had the weasels...

That said, I think they've spoken a teeny bit about this. They referred to these in the interview that Mr. K linked to as "Mischievous Lemmings", and the official trailer says that "Not all lemmings are here to play", which for the moment I've taken to mean that these guys will be somewhat like previous bad guys that have appeared. One preview (which I can't find right now, annoyingly) has suggested that the evil lemmings will wreck the work of your Builders, and things like that, though.

(I must admit, as I mentioned briefly in the Minecraft thread in the Video Games section of the forum, this game has somehow managed to melt away my cynicism and skepticism about it, and I'm quite looking forward to it, now. :D It and several other titles swung me on getting a Vita, so I'll write up a review once I pick it up.)

New footage and info!

http://www.theaveragegamer.com/2013/12/05/new-lemming-type-touch-footage/

The video at the link above showcases customisation of how your lemmings look (for example, you can change the colour of their hair and clothing, add accessories, and change the look of implements used in conjunction with some skills), as well as showing the "Mischievous Lemmings" in action.

It turns out that the evil guys come out of the entrance with the normal ones. They do things like destroying the exit, and you have to actually make the effort to kill them, rather than aiding your lemmings in avoiding them. I think that this could shake things up in an interesting fashion, and I'm glad that it's turned out to be quite different to what I was expecting.

Huh, that's an interesting twist!  I actually ended up ordering a Vita a few days ago, so I'll be able to check this out when it gets released.

I imported one of the new "Slim" versions from Japan, but it's all wrapped up for Christmas, so even if Lemmings Touch was released next week, I couldn't play it yet. Bah, humbug! (I'm almost expecting a February release, at this point, though, for some reason, perhaps due to when the original game was released.)

That said, at least you can register, use, and purchase items with, a PSN account without actually having any hardware registered to it. I've picked up a couple of things in the pre-Christmas sales already. If I have to, I'll do the same with Lemmings Touch, and then make it the first game I play on the day.

The tiniest bit of new footage can be found below;

http://youtu.be/7vGTOctLzwc?t=47s

It's part of another video, and finally gives a release-window that, after today's no-show on the last PS Store update of this year, now seems obvious (if only I'd seen this video when it went up!).

This also contains another bit of info that I had suspected, but was nonetheless very pleased to hear. I think that that one warrants its own topic, so I'll go and post that now.

Have we heard anything more about this game yet? After a quick search on google I only find info from the announcement and that is pretty much it. My Vita needs this game! :(

Nothing more yet. To the very best of my knowledge, this thread has compiled the most up-to-date information there is anywhere! Even the official PlayStation Blog hasn't been publicising it outside of the initial announcement last September, and the videos that I linked to above seem to just have been scattered to different outside sources, rather than the official publicity ones.

Myself, I was hoping for a release this past Wednesday (Wednesday being the PlayStation Store update-day), since that would have put it close to the series' anniversary date on February 14th, but there was nothing.

I hope comments like the on I made somewhere [once again lost it, thought it was in this thread] don't deter game designers.  :( Of course I'd be very happy for a new Lemmings game even if its on a console I don't have. There's a always a chance they might port it to PC, however slim. [or that ccexplore will eventually do the hard work and rip the levels from it for lvl format  :P ]
I'd be happy for a revamp on the series and new puzzles of course.
I took another look at one of those videos and it looks like there are some new game features in there.

This Lemmings has touch features where you can move terrains with your finger. I can build the levels in Lemmix, like I did with the ones in the PSP but it wouldn't be the same levels, since Lemmix doesn't have touch screen and cannons.
