Lemmini Troubleshooting
« on: July 03, 2009, 02:17:23 AM »
Awhile ago I tried to get Lemmini up and running on my laptop (Vista), with no success. I was just curious if anyone else out there used Lemmini, and/or if they had gotten it to run on Vista. If not, how do you play test your levels? I only use the replay feature of lemmix.
Finally released my 6th level pack! Ten levels intended to push you quite a bit beyond the expectations of Mayhem/Havoc; check 'em out and let me know what you think!

I haven't done anything with Lemmini for ages, however if I recall correctly, it's written in Java correct?

Java is platform-independent, so I'd expect that Lemmini should not care whether it is running on Vista vs XP vs Linux vs Mac vs what-not.  So maybe it has nothing to do with Vista, in which case you might want to check whether all the required files are there.  (Again, not having used it for ages, I don't remember what files you need.)

Also, does Lemmini at least give you some sort of error message?  The error message may give clues as to what's wrong.

I never even got it installed. Th hang up is when I set the source path for the lemmings data. I get the error
Code: [Select]
Validating WINLEMM
GFX/BLINK.SPR
CRC error for file C:/OLDGAMES/NoCDLemm/GFX/BLINK.SPR.

I'm 99% sure I have the correct files in this directory, and as I had troubles with obsolete file types in the past with other lemmings games  I assumed Vista was to blame.

It's maybe to one of the following reasons :
- Which version of Lemmini do you use? If it is 0.79 the extraction process fails due to a CRC check with a file you don't have.  Update then to version 0.79b (http://lemmini.de)
- Which version of WinLemm do you use? I can read "/NoCDLemm/" in your post so maybe it's a cracked version and so it could be logical that the CRC check fails since cracked files are different... Could you give us the CRC of your BLINK.SPR so that we can tell you if your are corrupted or not? You can use fsum or fsum frontend to generate hashes.

Lemmini checks files using the adler32 checksum algorithm. Don't mistake adler32 with CRC32, MD5,... Your BLINK.SPR file should have the following hashes :
  • adler32 : 1a3f9bb6
  • crc32 : FDEE8022
  • md5 : AFEEBFAD7DA1FBF5CBA8C0664D8E1C17

If you have other values Lemmini will fail at extraction for sure.

To be honest, I possess none of the technical knowledge required to try any of those things... I think I get the gist of what you're suggesting though. I thought I had the correct copy of the game on my computer, but I'm guessing I don't; Lemmini calls for the files from Lemmings for Windows (95) and I suppose I don't have that...could anyone provide me with a download link?

The Lemmings File Archive has one you could try and see:

OK so you had a bad version of WinLemm. You should be careful with uncertain/unsure data, it could cause damage to your files, or even your system...  ;)

This thread should be renamed, because it could be useful to others who may not be running Windows Vista.

I have Lemmini on my computer (with Vista) and it works perfectly. I put it all into a zip folder and wanted to upload it somewhere for everyone here to access, but I dont know of a place to put it. The old file portal wont let me put it there. This has my custom tilesets already configured to it along with Lemmix.

Tim, don't upload a zip including Lemmini+WinLemm. I think Volker (aka 0xdeadbeef, the creator of Lemmini) wouldn't agree! (for legal and personal reasons). So I'd advise you to respect his choice  ;)

Agree+1

On his Lemmini page, he expresses says that Lemmini should only be used with legally obtained copies of Lemmings for Windows. Of course, people can do what they like to obtain Lemmings for Windows, but it would do him dishonour to distribute his software with an illegal copy of those resources.

I tried installing it on Ubuntu (which is a Linux distribution, for those who are wondering), and I couldn't figure out how.  Of course, I couldn't tell it where WinLemm was, cause it never even GOT that far.

I had already installed and played Lemmini on Ubuntu in the past (version 8.04 aka Hardy Heron) and it worked like a charm. I think I just needed to set the sound profile... In short, nothing that complicated  ;)
