Site Discussion / Re: Server Move - Discussion and Status
« on: December 21, 2014, 03:18:11 AM »
Posts from LemmingsWelt have been successfully loaded onto the new forum!

EDIT: After posting this, I noticed a small error; namely that the timestamps on the messages are wrong. Time to look into that...

Next up; IsaMedia! Due to the format this one is in, which isn't particularly well-suited to anything I've made so far, the easiest way might actually be to first write an app to convert it to a format similar to that which LemmingsWelt is in. However, I'm taking a short break for now. :P (As in a few hours or so, not a few days. :P )

EDIT: Got the timestamps fixed. I'm now trying to come up with a piece of SQL code that'll fix the message ordering with minimal side effects. That way, I can allow posting on the new forum without having to worry about disappearing messages (not as in disappearing completely; more accurate would be to say "dropping to the bottom of the list even if the added messages are older").

Any attachment that is currently still attached to the post on *this* forum will be fine, too. It's only the older boards (and the disappeared ones from this board) that I can't recover. This still applies even if we cant get a copy of the database.

EDIT: I mentioned yesterday that I successfully added a post directly via the database, using hand-written SQL queries. I've now successfully done the same with automatically-generated ones based on simply supplying a board ID, a subject, a message, a username and a post time to a self-written piece of code. This means that now, all that needs to be done is writing the side that parses the existing forum files in some format and supplies the data to this code snippet. LemmingsWelt will be first, both due to it being the oldest and due to it being in an easier format to work with.

Site Discussion / Posting temporarily disabled.
« on: December 20, 2014, 10:34:21 AM »
I'm going to be adding the posts from the old forums over the next few days - at least LemmingsWelt and IsaMedia for now. I've done a test run of adding a post directly via the database, and it goes 99% smoothly. The one minor issue - when sorting topic lists by the newest posts, the highest post in the list is determined by the order they were added to the database, not their timestamps. The result of this is that when I add old posts, they'll push all already-existing posts to the bottom of the list.

In order to minimize the impact of this, I've disabled posting until further notice (ie: until the content of those other forums has been added). The old forums are still available for now, so use them for as long as possible.

I will re-enable posting here when one of the following conditions is met:
- The old forums go down for more than 24 hours, unless it's an intentional action on the part of admins as part of the move
- All posts have been moved over
- If I find a way around this issue (which I probably will, so this is the most likely condition to occur first)

Until then, keep in mind - existing posts will not be lost; they'll simply be pushed to the bottom of the topic lists. A single reply will bring them back to the top.

No response from either Adam or Liam yet. :(

Anyway, in terms of importing the old posts, I've done a bit of looking into exactly how to do it, and I should be able to write SQL files (or more accurately, write an app to generate SQL files) to batch-add old posts. Shortly I'm going to try just adding a small hand-written snippet to make sure it works* (this'll be added to a mod/admin-only board on the new forum so most of you won't see it); once that works, I'll try to parse the LemmingsWelt database, which is ironically the one that's in a more convenient format for me to write the app for. If all goes well, I'll add IsaMedia next, and once both of those are in, I can look at doing something with *this* board, since it doesn't look like we're going to be getting a copy of the database...

One issue geoo raised (and this may be very important to some people) is private messages. Unless we get the database, there's simply no way I can import the private messages from this site, for obvious reasons. So, if we don't get the database then when we do move, make sure you save a backup copy of any important private messages somewhere.

EDIT: * This was 100% successful on the first attempt. There is one minor issue - even if the posts (going by timestamp) is older, the newly-added post is pushed to the top of the topics list. Therefore, until further notice, I've disabled posting on the new board. I'll re-enable it when either:
a) I find a way around this
b) These forums go down for more than 24 hours, unless it's an intentional action as part of the move
c) All posts have been imported

And just to confirm 100%: Yes, we will have the LemmingsWelt and IsaMedia posts imported too, not just the ones from *this* forum. :D However, it looks like we'll only have the attachments from *this* forum; the other two will be posts only.

Levels for v10 or older / Re: Lemmings Plus Omega - Release Topic
« on: December 19, 2014, 01:21:17 AM »
I've started compiling a maximum saved records list. I'm including results from the testing period where I can remember any results that stood out (and weren't blocked by later backroute fixes).

Here's a pretty good challenge: 98% on Perplexing 14. (100% doesn't appear to be possible)

NeoLemmix Main / Re: NeoLemmix (Player: V1.26n-C | Editor: V1.26n-B)
« on: December 18, 2014, 11:20:25 PM »
Update is finally here. :) This update brings the NeoLemmix versions in line with what LPO was released based on, as well as allowing general use of the LPO gimmicks (and the new feature of entrances pre-assigning permanent skills).

NeoLemmix V1.26n-C
-----------------------------
* Increased the strictness of Platformer terrain checks.
* Fixed a bug with swimmer+climber athletes.
* Fixed a bug with a three-way interaction between a climber, a blocker
  and a stacker.
* Fixed a minor graphical glitch in the Desert style.
* LPO gimmicks are now usable in all NeoLemmix players:
(Gim24) is the rising water gimmick. Any water (or fire!) objects that you
want to rise should have their L value set to a non-zero value; they will
rise by 1 pixel every (L value) frames. Note that it should be impossible
for the lemmings to get below the water level unless they'll drown (or swim)
immediately, and any objects that come before the water in the object list
must have the same No Overwrite setting as the water itself does; otherwise
    graphical glitches may occur.
(Gim25) is the Playtime 10 gimmick. Giving away how this works would spoil the
level's solution so I won't detail it just yet, PM me if you want the info.
(Gim26) is the Zombie gimmick. Marking a lemming as a zombie is done the same
way as initially giving it a skill; the value to add for zombie is 64.
* Just like with pre-placed lemmings, trapdoors can also have skills initially
assigned to the lemmings they spawn. It's done the same way as for a pre-placed
lemming, except that trapdoors can't spawn blockers (they CAN spawn zombies).
* Lemmings Plus Flashbacks is now included in the NeoLemmix update stream; as
always this is considered an unofficial version of the game.

Also, the NeoLemmix website finally has information on all the NeoLemmix file formats (except VGASPEC, but standard Lemmings VGASPECs will work perfectly fine too).

I'm pretty sure someone said he's on facebook-- might be a good idea to try contacting him there. I do not use face book regularly so I don't know how to do that.

Btw, do I read that you are able/willing to upload posts from previous forums like Lemmingswelt onto this new forum? If so, why wasn't this done before? [geoo or you(s) weren't in charge is the answer I'm guessing]

I have Facebook, so I'll have a go at contacting him on there.
EDIT: Unless someone has a more up-to-date email address for him, no luck (maybe geoo can find one from the user database here?). However, I have managed to locate Liam's Facebook - no idea how useful that'll be; he hasn't posted anything publically since mid-late 2013, but it's possible more recent posts just weren't set to public; I won't be able to see that unless/until he accepts a friend request.

As for the old forums, one issue is a difference in format. But yes, the main issue is that doing so will require server access, which on this forum, only Adam (and maybe Liam) have, and they were either unable or unwilling to do so (or maybe just never thought of it). But yes, geoo has a backup of the old forums, which he's passed on to me, and I should be able to do something to get them up on the new board - I'm going to start looking into it very soon.

In case this one disappears without warning, I'm going to update my HTML backup of it on a daily basis where possible. Worst case scenario; we can at least get the posts and attachments back, which I believe is the most important thing.

9549
I just tried it and had no problems, but also had no unread posts at the time. I'll try again when there are some, or if nessecary, post some with a dummy account for testing purposes.

Alright then. Since people seem to be happy with this option, I'll also discourage posting (but encourage registration and knowing the link just in case) on the new forum.

If anyone does manage to get contact with Adam, what we need is just the database plus the contents of the "attachments" folder on the server. (Yes, I do at this point have a backup of all current attachments, but if we can get the folder as-is that'll be easier to import, whereas the form I have them in would require parsing the pages to get the correct filenames and other metadata for them.)

Meanwhile, I'm going to experiment with the older forum backups to see if I can get them going well on the new server.

As far as contacting Adam or Liam goes, I dont' have any ideas for Liam so we'll ignore that for now. As for Adam, I notice his youtube channel has uploads as recent as one week ago, so I'd say it's still active; I left a message on his channel (I noticed Akseli had already done this too). I also identified that the phone number in the domain WHOIS lookup appeared to be a cellphone so I've sent an SMS message to it.

Site Discussion / Re: Welcome to the new Lemmings Forums... yet again.
« on: December 18, 2014, 10:19:13 AM »
Alright, I'm going to be able to get the existing posts and attachments for sure. :D I already have them all on my PC; just have to write a program to parse them, then import them to this forum.

Also, you might've noticed the URL changed (and old URLs automatically redirected) to lemforums.neolemmix.com instead of lemforums.nfshost.com. I did this to test if it'd be very complicated to move to a new URL (in case we can get the lemmingsforums.com domain, or register a new one) and it's very simple with no issues whatsoever. :)

Site Discussion / Re: NOTE: Spam from 50+ New Forum Members.
« on: December 18, 2014, 09:00:47 AM »
Okay, I've finally got a solution that allows me to download a copy of the posts including attachments. I'll be able to add the posts to the new forum; I just need to write something to parse the HTML which will be simple once I actually have the files on my computer (which is in the process of being downloaded as I write this, and yes, attachments are definitely included). My suggestion would be to start using the new one now (the old posts will be there soon enough), and especially avoid new attachments on this one - perhaps use a file hosting service in the meantime if you need to post something here. The posts from this board will be there soon enough.

I've also posted in the Site Talk board over there a topic for finding moderators and administrators for the new board - highest priority will go to current staff members here who are fairly active (ie: Clam, geoo and Proxima) if they're interested; if it seems we need more or any of them aren't interested I can look at adding more later.

I'll still leave it to the mods/admins to make an official announcement about this; but that's my two cents at the current point in time. If you don't have the new link yet but want it, just ask around - there's plenty of people who do have it. Of course if the mods/admins do make any public official announcement I'd expect they'd put the link in that too.

Note to the staff: Please DON'T take down the board until I confirm I've got a 100% up to date copy. If nessecary, disabling posting is fine, as long as reading it and downloading attachments (including as guest) is still possible - in fact doing this might be ideal.

EDIT: At the current point, I have a complete backup I can use of the entire board in its current state (or at least the messages and attachments :P ), except for this edit to this post.

The logo at the top of the page is the most important. Right now it's just the old one with the lemmings removed and "Forums" centered. We can worry about the rest later.

Levels for v10 or older / Lemmings Plus Omega - Release Topic
« on: December 18, 2014, 01:08:28 AM »
NOTE: This topic has been closed. The links / info here may be out of date. This pack can be discussed in the general Lemmings Plus topic here.

Well everyone... it's finally here! The Lemmings Plus pack to conclude all Lemmings Plus packs... or something epic-sounding like that.

Lemmings Plus Omega is a NeoLemmix-based pack of 135 levels, using the graphic sets from both LPII and LPIII. It's my last major pack (at least under the "Lemmings Plus" brand), and if the testers' feedback is anything to go by, it's going to be a great end to the series. ^_^

There's no secret levels this time, so no need to hunt endlessly for them. There are gimmick and frenzy levels - in their own rank, seperate from the main levels, so if you don't like them, you don't have to play them. (Or if you mainly like them, you don't have to dig them out among the normal levels). Unlike LPII and LPIII, there are once again repeat levels - something I really missed in those two packs!

My aim with the difficulty was to have a similar standard to LPII. This means that it doesn't get quite as hard as LPIII did, but it's still pretty challenging towards the end. And since it uses the new NeoLemmix skills, there's the added challenge of getting used to those - of course, there's tutorial levels to introduce them!

Anyway, I'll expand on this post later, but for now... here's the download locations. :D

DropBox Folder
NeoLemmix Website

Both links have both the game itself and a music pack. The music pack is completely optional; it just gives better quality versions of some musics.

So, download, and enjoy!

Special thanks to Akseli, DynaLem, Minim, mobius and Nepster for pre-release testing - this pack definitely had a much more extensive testing period than LPIII or HLP did, so hopefully I've got everything right the first time! :)

Level Name References
Once-per-rank level "Traptastic": To alert the player to the presence of hidden traps.

Breezy 1-7: All of these are references to the skill introduced in the level.

Breezy 13 "Time To Gap It!": An obvious fact about the level, but also a saying meaning similar to "let's get out of here".
Breezy 14 "What A Sixy Lemming!": A play on "What A Sexy _____", also referencing the level having six lemmings.
Breezy 16 "Not That Way!": A hint at the solution.
Breezy 18 "Up, Up and Home!": A play on "Up, Up and Away!".
Breezy 19 "A Blocker Would Be Handy": ...well, it would. Also a reference to, by now, countless other levels.

Puzzling 11 "Backwards Solution": A hint at the solution.
Puzzling 13 "The Martian Lake Beast": A reference to the level's design.
Puzzling 14 "So This Is How It Ends...": This refers to this level being the last one I made for LPO, and thus, most likely the last level ever made for Lemmings Plus.
Puzzling 20 "Don't Go Anywhere!": This title was given before the second (lower) entrance was added; thus at this time it was a reference to the solution.
Puzzling 22 "Don't Count Your Lemmings...": A play on "Don't count your chickens".
Puzzling 23 "Eco-Friendly Lemmings": A reference to Tricky 15 "Ozone-Friendly Lemmings"; originally this level was placed at Puzzling 15, and it's a repeat of the first level in the pack.

Mental 4 "Trade of the Tricks": A play on "Tricks of the trade".
Mental 5 "(insert clever title here)": Initially placed as a self-joke because I couldn't think of a name at the time, I decided to leave it as-is.
Mental 8 "Silica Valley": A play on "Silicon Valley".
Mental 9 "Stormy Ascent": A reference to the dummied-out Crash Bandicoot 1 level of the same name.
Mental 10 "Project Thataway": A play on "Project Runaway".
Mental 11 "No Way Around It This Time...": This was referring to the level enforcing a trick that someone kept avoiding in Fierce 15 of LPIII. Ironically, they found plenty of ways around it in this level too at first.
