Contests / Official Lemmings Forums Contests
« on: December 28, 2014, 11:47:55 AM »
One thing I'd like to start doing - depending on interest - is running official contests every now and then, perhaps even with some kind of prizes. Nothing huge of course, but something.

How would you's feel about this idea?

Site Discussion / Posts from LemmingsForums.com
« on: December 28, 2014, 07:06:14 AM »
These posts are up now, so I need to mention: To keep importing them as simple as possible, the raw HTML has been imported rather than converting it back to BBCode, as this is, while not impossible, a very difficult task that would severely delay the import.

This will only matter if you need to edit (or quote) one of these posts later. In the event that you do need to do such, the following web-based tool should assist with converting the message back to BBCode:

http://www.seabreezecomputers.com/html2bbcode/

As for linking old posts to user accounts - this will be done over the next few days (and from previous experience with the move, you can probably guess - this actually means "later today or maybe tomorrow at the latest").

Site Discussion / Domain Name
« on: December 24, 2014, 04:39:10 AM »
Since it seems unlikely Adam is going to respond to any contact, and thus we probably won't get the www.lemmingsforums.com domain, I've gone ahead and registered a new one for this site.

The address is www.lemmingsforums.net

Due to how domain registration works it may take up to 24 hours for this to become fully functional, so in the meantime, this URL just redirects to the current link (lemforums.neolemmix.com); once it's up and working fully, I'll make that the main URL. Don't worry, this won't break any links; they'll redirect properly (eg: if you were to go to http://lemforums.neolemmix.com/old/index.php?whatever=123, it would redirect you to http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?whatever=123).

Site Discussion / Private Messages
« on: December 23, 2014, 06:52:51 AM »
What could be recovered of old private messages has been. The recoverable ones were:

> Up to Thu, 09 Jan 2014 18:25:56 (UTC) was the most recent private message that was recoverable
> Only messages to those who have an account here could be recovered. However, this DOES include those who's accounts were imported from the old forum. (IE: Those who had an account and at least one post at the time of the backup.)
> "Threaded" features (that track which PMs are a reply to which other ones) are most likely broken. But the contents of the messages themself will be there.
> For received messages, they could only be imported if your username or email address (or both) was the same on here as it was at the time of the January backup on the old forum.
> For sent messages, as well as the above criteria, the recipient would probably need to meet the above criteria too.
> If you deleted a message more recently than the January backup, it would reappear as (obviously) it's deletion would not be logged in the backup I have. If you deleted it *before* the January backup though, it should stay deleted.

If you think any are missing, let me know. Ones more recent than this simply cannot with the tools we currently have available, sorry. You'll need to manually back them up; if you want them on the boards here, one option is to PM them to yourself.

Other Projects / Dedicated Boards
« on: December 22, 2014, 12:34:35 AM »
If you would like a dedicated board for your project (such as currently exist for Lix, NeoLemmix and SuperLemmini), please request it in this topic. You will have moderator access on the board for your project *only* (unless you're already a global moderator, of course); within reason you can request that specific other users get it for your board too.

The following requirements exist for getting a dedicated board:
- The project must be released in some form, and not just a demo. It doesn't have to be a final version, but it does have to exist.
- Dedicated boards are not available for projects which are simply level packs. Yes, even Lemmings Plus doesn't get one.
- Obviously, the project must be Lemmings-related. Replacing the lemmings with another creature is fine, of course.
- The project doesn't nessecerially need to be a Lemmings / IRS engine of some kind. For example, a level editor may qualify if its sole (or primary) purpose is Lemmings levels.
- More than one project can share a dedicated board if they're related; for example, the NeoLemmix player and the NeoLemmix Editor.
- Absolutely in no case will a dedicated board be made for a project that isn't free. (I mean free-as-in-beer here; it doesn't have to be open-source.) Accepting donations or ad-supported still counts as "free", but the free-to-play model does not. Inbetween cases will be judged on a case-by-case basis; for example, an otherwise-free ad-supported project with an option to pay to remove ads will most likely be fine, but a game where only single-player is free yet the focus is clearly on multiplayer will most likely not get a dedicated board here.

(To avoid doubt - you are allowed to create topics on the "Other Projects" board about projects that don't meet the requirements for a dedicated board.)

Site Discussion / Attachments to private messages? Done.
« on: December 21, 2014, 12:21:10 PM »
Yep, you can now attach files to private messages on here, as well as to public posts. :)

The documentation suggests that forum admins cannot see the files, though I would believe that they become visible if the PM is reported, and even more so that anyone with server access likely *can* retrieve them. So, don't abuse this feature.

I haven't yet found an addon to put the messages and unread messages count in the top-right corner of the page; it may be that Adam coded this himself or it was a core feature removed on newer versions. I will keep looking, though.

Site Discussion / Posting temporarily disabled.
« on: December 20, 2014, 10:34:21 AM »
I'm going to be adding the posts from the old forums over the next few days - at least LemmingsWelt and IsaMedia for now. I've done a test run of adding a post directly via the database, and it goes 99% smoothly. The one minor issue - when sorting topic lists by the newest posts, the highest post in the list is determined by the order they were added to the database, not their timestamps. The result of this is that when I add old posts, they'll push all already-existing posts to the bottom of the list.

In order to minimize the impact of this, I've disabled posting until further notice (ie: until the content of those other forums has been added). The old forums are still available for now, so use them for as long as possible.

I will re-enable posting here when one of the following conditions is met:
- The old forums go down for more than 24 hours, unless it's an intentional action on the part of admins as part of the move
- All posts have been moved over
- If I find a way around this issue (which I probably will, so this is the most likely condition to occur first)

Until then, keep in mind - existing posts will not be lost; they'll simply be pushed to the bottom of the topic lists. A single reply will bring them back to the top.

Levels for v10 or older / Lemmings Plus Omega - Release Topic
« on: December 18, 2014, 01:08:28 AM »
NOTE: This topic has been closed. The links / info here may be out of date. This pack can be discussed in the general Lemmings Plus topic here.

Well everyone... it's finally here! The Lemmings Plus pack to conclude all Lemmings Plus packs... or something epic-sounding like that.

Lemmings Plus Omega is a NeoLemmix-based pack of 135 levels, using the graphic sets from both LPII and LPIII. It's my last major pack (at least under the "Lemmings Plus" brand), and if the testers' feedback is anything to go by, it's going to be a great end to the series. ^_^

There's no secret levels this time, so no need to hunt endlessly for them. There are gimmick and frenzy levels - in their own rank, seperate from the main levels, so if you don't like them, you don't have to play them. (Or if you mainly like them, you don't have to dig them out among the normal levels). Unlike LPII and LPIII, there are once again repeat levels - something I really missed in those two packs!

My aim with the difficulty was to have a similar standard to LPII. This means that it doesn't get quite as hard as LPIII did, but it's still pretty challenging towards the end. And since it uses the new NeoLemmix skills, there's the added challenge of getting used to those - of course, there's tutorial levels to introduce them!

Anyway, I'll expand on this post later, but for now... here's the download locations. :D

DropBox Folder
NeoLemmix Website

Both links have both the game itself and a music pack. The music pack is completely optional; it just gives better quality versions of some musics.

So, download, and enjoy!

Special thanks to Akseli, DynaLem, Minim, mobius and Nepster for pre-release testing - this pack definitely had a much more extensive testing period than LPIII or HLP did, so hopefully I've got everything right the first time! :)

Breezy 16 "Not That Way!": A hint at the solution.

Puzzling 20 "Don't Go Anywhere!": This title was given before the second (lower) entrance was added; thus at this time it was a reference to the solution.
Puzzling 22 "Don't Count Your Lemmings...": A play on "Don't count your chickens".
Puzzling 23 "Eco-Friendly Lemmings": A reference to Tricky 15 "Ozone-Friendly Lemmings"; originally this level was placed at Puzzling 15, and it's a repeat of the first level in the pack.

Perplexing 29 "From Endings To Beginnings": A hint at the solution.

Mental 4 "Trade of the Tricks": A play on "Tricks of the trade".
Mental 5 "(insert clever title here)": Initially placed as a self-joke because I couldn't think of a name at the time, I decided to leave it as-is.
Mental 8 "Silica Valley": A play on "Silicon Valley".
Mental 9 "Stormy Ascent": A reference to the dummied-out Crash Bandicoot 1 level of the same name.
Mental 10 "Project Thataway": A play on "Project Runaway".
Mental 11 "No Way Around It This Time...": This was referring to the level enforcing a trick that someone kept avoiding in Fierce 15 of LPIII. Ironically, they found plenty of ways around it in this level too at first.
Mental 13 "A Different Kind Of Hero": A reference to Mayhem 3 "It's Hero Time" and this level having a similar skillset (except with the new skills).
Mental 19 "Splittin' Like Crazy": A reference to the extreme number of splitters in this level.

Mental 26 "Will It Be Enough...?": Refers to the level's fairly tight time limit.
Mental 27 "Six-Lem Situation": Refers to the level having six lemmings.
Mental 28 "The Troublesome Trio": Refers to the level having three lemmings.
Mental 29 "Through Thick And Thin...": Not much to say about the level name, but this one in fact was originally titled "Panic Attack II" for reasons that are obvious upon viewing its design.
Mental 30 "The Final Tower": Both a play on "The Final Hour" and a reference to being the final regular level.

Playtime, general: Most level names here make some reference to the gimmick in them.
Playtime 1 "Quarantined Threat": A reference to the level's design (as well as the gimmick).
Playtime 7 "Glider Frenzy": An obvious twist on "Floater Frenzy".
Playtime 9 "Finally...": Refers to the level having similar layouts and stats to the No Time To Die levels, but with the Karoshi gimmick.

NeoLemmix Levels / Lemmings Plus Series
« on: December 15, 2014, 11:57:16 AM »
Lemmings Plus is a series of custom level packs which run on the NeoLemmix engine.

There are a total of 12 completed games in this series, consisting of:

- 6 main series entries
(Lemmings Plus I to Lemmings Plus VI)

- 2 "Omega" series entry
(Lemmings Plus Omega, Lemmings Plus Omega II)

- 3 other side entries
(Lemmings Plus Alpha, Holiday Lemmings Plus, Lemmings Plus 3D - the last one being on Lemmings 3D rather than NeoLemmix)

- 1 collection pack, featuring 95 of the best levels from the Lemmings Plus series
   (Lemmings Plus Compressed)

Lemmings Plus I, II, Omega and Alpha were created with the Sega Master System music pack for Orig, and the DOS music pack for OhNo, in mind.

Note that most of these packs are considered "finalized", and they will only be modified if needed to ensure compatibility with new NeoLemmix versions (not to fix backroutes / etc). Of course, this is completely at my discretion.

All NeoLemmix packs have been confirmed solvable in NeoLemmix V12.12.X.

NeoLemmix Main / NeoLemmix Info, Downloads, Etc
« on: December 15, 2014, 11:46:00 AM »
Welcome to NeoLemmix!
Warning: This post is quite outdated. I'm planning to replace it altogether in the near-future.

Latest NeoLemmix Version: 1.36n
Latest NeoLemmix Editor Version: 1.36n-A

NeoLemmix is an updated version of the Lemmix Player engine which fixes glitches that are carried over from DOS Lemmings, as well as adds a variety of new features and removes or reduces limitations. For the most part, compatibility with traditional DOS/Lemmings content is maintained. As of yet, not much original content has been produced for NeoLemmix but I'm hoping that'll change soon enough; the major exception being the Lemmings Plus series which most entries were designed for NeoLemmix from the beginning and the remainder (LPI, LPII and LPII Bonus Pack) have been converted to it.

There are NeoLemmix versions available of all official games for which a Lemmix player exists (except Holiday 93, as its levels are included in Holiday 94 anyway), as well as for my own Lemmix-based packs (Lemmings Plus DOS Project, Lemmings Plus II, and Lemmings Plus II Bonus Pack). As well as using the NeoLemmix engine, the levels in these players have been tuned up to take advantage of NeoLemmix capabilities - for example, autosteel is generally used or where not practical more finely-tuned steel areas are in place, and most level sizes have been adjusted to remove excess space. Also, where applicable, the NeoLemmix players use the Amiga version levels as a base, rather than the DOS versions. Specifically, NeoLemmix players are available for the following:
  • Original Lemmings
  • Oh No! More Lemmings!
  • Xmas Lemmings 91 & 92 (combined two-in-one player)
  • Holiday Lemmings 94
  • Covox Lemmings Demo
  • Prima Publishing Lemmings Demo
  • "Extra Levels" Lemmix Player
  • Copycat Lemmings (by Peter Spada aka Essman)

In addition to this, there are also NeoLemmix versions of CustLemmix and FlexiLemmix. The former is useful for playing or creating small level packs, while the latter is useful for creating entire fangames. NeoCustLemmix comes with a levelpack designed to show off the new skills; it contains tutorial levels for them (with each level using one new skill, in combination with one or more of the classic skills), as well as one puzzle level that uses most of these new skills.

An overview of some of the new or upgraded features in NeoLemmix:
  • Pixel-perfect placements of objects and steel areas
  • 8 new skill types - Walkers, Swimmers, Gliders, Mechanics, Stoners, Platformers, Stackers and Cloners!
  • Levels can contain an expanded number of pieces - there's no longer any limit as of V1.33n
  • Autosteel; removing the need to manually place steel areas in levels
  • Gimmicks; supports all gimmicks used in the Lemmings Plus series, as well as many others
  • Secret levels
  • New object types, just to give some examples there's pre-placed lemmings, pickup skills and teleporters
  • Expanded graphic set format, allowing 24-bit color and no limit to how many pieces they contain
  • Easy oddtabling; allowing you to create repeat levels without having to make modifications to both copies of a level if issues arise
  • Specifying the window order instead of being forced to rely on a default or overlapping multiple copies of a window

There is also an extended version of the Lemmix Editor, very creatively titled "NeoLemmix Editor". This level editor retains compatibility with traditional-format levels, but is specifically intended for use with NeoLemmix. The editor is generally kept in-line with new player releases, to support any new features that have been added. Additionally, unlike the Lemmix Editor which has remained as-is for a very long time now, the NeoLemmix Editor is being actively updated, so any identified issues can be fixed. Recently, the NeoLemmix Editor's capabilities have been expanded to also support editing SuperLemmini levels. Aside from these two, it's also compatible with DOS / traditional Lemmix and traditional Lemmini; though it is not guaranteed that support for these works 100% perfectly, or that it will permanently maintain support for them. It also supports directly integrating with NeoCustLemmix (or traditional CustLemmix) to provide a playtest mode just like the standard Lemmix Editor has, but with full support for all features in the players that were missing from the editor's playtest mode - as it directly uses the players!

Just for reference - if you're wondering "will NeoLemmix ever support (insert Lix / SuperLemmini / other engine feature here)" - your best bet, if it doesn't already support it, is to ask! Some of them I do not plan to add support for, but others I may be open to adding if there's enough interest in it. (On the other hand, if a SuperLemmini feature is not supported in the editor, then unless it was introduced in a very recent release of SuperLemmini (in which case I'm probably already working on it by the time anyone's noticed xD), let me know! The exception is the background terrain feature, which I am aware is missing from the editor - I will implement this at some point but it's not high on my priority list at the moment.)

Source Code
For LemMain and LemSet, source code (for QB64) is included in the download.
For the NeoLemmix Graphic Set Tool, source code (for Delphi 7) is available in a subfolder of the tools folder linked above.
Source code for NeoLemmix player V1.35n-C (Delphi 7) is available here. Some older versions are available on request.
Source code is available on request for the NeoLemmix Editor. It may not always be available for all older versions, however.
For other tools, if it is not provided, it is generally available on request.

Compatibility with other software
NeoLemmix player supports DOS / traditional Lemmix levels as well as NeoLemmix levels. It does not support any other engines.
NeoLemmix Editor is the only known editor that supports NeoLemmix levels; it additionally supports DOS / traditional Lemmix levels, Lemmini levels and SuperLemmini levels.
SuperLemmini is capable of loading 2KB and 10KB NeoLemmix levels, but not (yet) capable of loading the variable-sized level format introduced in V1.33n.
If you are developing an editor, or modifying an existing one, and would like to add support for NeoLemmix, I am happy to help you do so. Please first look at the documents in the "Misc Documents" subfolder of the NeoLemmix folder above and/or the "Format Information" on the NeoLemmix website; then if you need further help, feel free to PM me or ask in this topic.

I want to make a NeoLemmix-based game!
There are three ways you can go about doing this.

The first is to use the basic structure of an existing pack, and simply drop in your LVLs and use the LookForLVLFiles option. This is what many people have already been doing to create their own packs in traditional Lemmix; it works equally well for NeoLemmix. The downside is you must match the avaialble graphic sets and rank structure of an existing pack - for example, if you were to base it off Prima, you'd have to have four ranks of four levels each and be limited to the ONML styles only. Furthermore, also note that the base players may not nessecerially have full support for all features - for example, the included style files often are not patched to include the pre-placed lemmings and pickup skills that are added in the versions in NeoCustLemmix. For this reason it is recommended to use one of the other methods.

The second, which gives you a bit more flexibility (for example, you can define your own custom rank names and level counts, have a custom logo, and if you want, build it as an all-in-one EXE) is to use the Flexi Player or the Flexi Toolkit to create your pack. See the included instructions with either one to create it. Note that you'll need to use LemMain to create a MAIN.DAT file and the NeoLemmix Editor to create a SYSTEM.DAT file.

The third, which gives the most flexibility of all, but requires a much higher level of technical capability, is to grab a copy of the source code and modify it for your own player. This is not a task that less-advanced users should try, but for those who are advanced enough, you can do virtually anything this way. The source code is for Delphi 7. I'll probably try porting it to a more-recent version eventually. I tried with both the latest version of Delphi and with Lazarus; results were not good in either case.

Obviously we need a couple of extras here beside just myself, so anyone interested?

Main criteria is:
- Online often. Doesn't have to be 24/7 of course, but more than once a year. :p
- Existing, established members of the forums.

For admins, I'll also give access to the site's database, FTP, etc, if the person in question feels comfortable with this. I absolutely want to have at least one other person with this access.

Of course I'll need to verify applying users are who they say, either by a PM on the old forum or talk to me on the Lix IRC channel.

Note that the requirements will be more stringent for admins than moderators.

Note that current staff members who are reasonably active will have priority. In other words, the following people have first priority:
- Akseli
- Clam
- geoo
- Proxima

Site Discussion / Welcome to the new Lemmings Forums... yet again.
« on: December 15, 2014, 09:48:18 AM »
Well, between the lack of administrator existance and the recent Russian spam, it seemed like time to move again, so... here's the new forum! You may have to re-register, sorry; first, try logging in with your old username, and the password you had around January 2014 (not your new one if you changed it since then). If you see you do have an account here (eg. by checking the member list) but can't recall your password from that time, feel free to contact an admin (myself, geoo or ccexplore) for help recovering it; alternatively you can create a new account if you prefer.

At the moment this doesn't have a very lemming-y look, but I'll be fixing that over the next few days. :)

Geoo and Clam have retained their roles as staff members here (with geoo moving up to administrator), with me obviously also as an admin. Aside from that, we have ccexplore as a new administrator, and Akseli as a new moderator. Proxima also retains position as board-specific moderator for the Challenges board, while Simon and Tsyu have moderator access on the Lix and SuperLemmini boards respectively (due to being the creators of those projects).

Prob Lem was temporarily a moderator to help with one issue, but he has stated he doesn't want a full-time moderator position. Nonetheless, a huge thanks to him in helping dig out the last few missing attachments (as well as for the very nice Lemmings-related creations he always makes and posts, of course)!

Level Design / Why no custom graphic sets?

Mostly asking this because if it's mostly due to LemSet being too difficult to use, I might look into making a more user-friendly tool in the near future (which would probably replace both LemSet and LemMain).

Okay, I figured it must be time to do this by now. So, you guys know the rules by now.

Round setup:

1st Round - Each rank individually, 2 votes per user, top 2 levels qualify (if >3 are tied for 2nd, only 1st qualifies)
2nd Round - Round 1 qualifiers split into two sets, 2 votes per user, top 2 levels qualify (same >3 tied rule)
3rd Round - Round 2 winners in a single set, 2 votes, top 2 levels qualify
4th Round - Finals, 1 vote per user
