Welcome to the Video Game Music Challenge!
A fun daily challenge inspired by a similar challenge/list Lana T. posted on the Lemmings Discord.
Please read before participating:
1) You will be given three short descriptions of a certain type of video game music, and it's up to you to write down the title of one specific video game track from one specific video game that matches each description and essentially creating a list of three different video game tracks. Links to your music track choices such as one on YouTube for others to listen to is not required but highly recommended!
2) Please post your list into a spoiler tag on this thread so that people that have already posted their own list can look but people that haven't posted their list yet won't be accidentally influenced.
3) You will have roughly until the deadline stated during that round to not only get your list of titles posted but in the meantime everyone is encouraged to discuss everyone's choices and list.
4) After that round is done another set of descriptions will be posted. This challenge will roughly end when general interest starts to die down, in the hopes that sometime in the future someone else will take over and revive the challenge!
To discuss any concerns or questions please post them in this dedicated thread (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5002)

3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born
Round will end on July 23 at 13:30 UTC July 25 at 13:30 UTC
Round 1Updated to include my thoughts on each of my picks.
Spoiler
1) Main Theme: Harvest Moon: Back to Nature - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLJ_o7urUVc
While this isn't my favorite title screen music, it is up there. My all time favorite is Baba Yetu from Civilization IV, but that's a real song that was put into a video game, not a track made specifically for a video game. I've never actually played Harvest Moon Back to Nature, but I have played Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town, which uses the same song, albeit lower quality as its title screen music too.
2) Deadlock: The Fruit of Grisaia/Grisaia no Kajitsu - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ji2W7iRP38
This is the game I'm going to play when I finally finish CLANNAD. I've seen a mod for Doki Doki Literature Club that is an homage to this game and uses a lot of the tracks from this game, so I've heard the soundtrack. This song really stuck out as amazing to me, and if the actual game is anywhere close to being as good as its soundtrack, it's going to be one heck of a good visual novel!
3) Battle Against a Somewhat Stronger Monster: Super Mario RPG - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNfqL-7PGrk
I was originally going to pick something from Super Mario 64, since I was born in 1996, but I decided on Mario RPG instead, since I may end up using Mario 64 music for other prompts. I've only played a bit of Mario RPG (made it to Merrymore, but then the Wii we had it on died), but it was very good. Not quite as good as Paper Mario, but I should go back and finish the game. I've always loved this miniboss music.
First round
1) Favorite music that's used in a main title screen
I'll kick off with something from my childhood: Galaforce (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w8ivhw9RZE) for the BBC Micro :)
2) Music that you like from a game you haven't played yet
"The Ground's Color is Yellow" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EV-H1zJbKk) (Touhou 10.5: Scarlet Weather Rhapsody). This track was my gateway to discovering the entire Touhou series, but 10.5 is one of the fighting games, so I haven't got round to playing that particular game yet :P
3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born
...I tried, I really did. I consulted Wikipedia. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_in_video_games) And I couldn't find anything from that year that I have even played, much less have fond memories of. I guess maybe the closest is Mr. Do! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-K6VH1AxQE), since I have played a BBC Micro clone called Mr. Ee! and it has the same music (which is just the Galop Infernal, which you all already know from its appearance in Lemmings, but this was where I first encountered it).
My first round:
Spoiler
1) Favorite music that's used in a main title screen
Command & Conquer Red Alert 2 - Grinder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJvPyH8WnMw (Live version from a concert by the original composer together with a fanband: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYWoxP9jLk0)
No question on my choice here and the thing that immidiately jumped into my mind when reading the category. It's simply one of the best main menu themes of all times and in quite a few top 10 listings as well.
2) Music that you like from a game you haven't played yet
Killer Instinct Season 2 - Mick Gordon - Inferno (Cinder's Theme): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRmwFBK0cyk
I am not a fighting game player, but I just love Mick Gordon's music and this is one of his best tracks imo.
3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born
I was born in 1991, so the Lemmings t-shirt I have not only represents the game's release year on it but also my birth year! It would be weird to me not to post a Lemmings track here.
So I just post a link to one of my favorite DOS Lemmings track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceESUJ6RWLw&list=PLYnKFyDMmhs1MmwLoEkriIXmnB7sQnfv4&index=17
Great, here are mine for the first round:
Spoiler
1)Turrican II - The Final Fight (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fvha_2hAzq0)
2)Turrican 3 C64 - Factory Action (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf-YEknDxQU&list=PLGjbdvfdw6GAl6Ko0oCSmrmqSxBJJHCjD&index=2)
3)Parodius: Non-Sense Fantasy (SNES) - Even the Patience of a Pierrot Has Limits (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3biRKsS3d1E&list=PL-vD6rIjXrcInMJiAj2ITn0S6AUIlRTL2&index=13)
And yes, I know I'm predictable :D
Even though you're meant to post your
favourite in each category, I'm already posting most of my favourite music on Twitter / Discord each day. Everything I post here would be stuff I plan to post there, so instead, I'll stick to stuff which
among my favorites rather than the #1 best pick. (Though if anyone wants to know what the #1 would be, you can ask.)
First Round
1) Favorite music that's used in a main title screen
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos - Croc Theme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mwWkwQjWVY
Very catchy. I remember this song vividly from my childhood. A lot of main menu music these days is understated and atmospheric, but games of this era and older often had these exciting or groovy menu themes. I love that, so I kinda wish we could return to those days.
2) Music that you like from a game you haven't played yet
Zero no Kiseki - A Light Illuminating The Depths
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB9xkXuHquo
This category is essentially a free pick for me, because the majority of music I listen to is from games I haven't played. Instead, I've emphasized the 'yet' by picking something I intend to play at some point. I'm a huge fan of the Trails / Kiseki series, but Zero no Kiseki has only recently been released in English via a fan translation. The series has phenomenal music.
3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born
Mega Man X - Armored Armadillo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mdLAT8pOZ4
That'd be 1993. This is one of the best soundtracks on the SNES, in my opinion, and possibly my favorite soundtrack in the entire Mega Man franchise. I could have picked almost any of the stage themes from this game, because I like them all. They really nailed it with MMX. The SNES has a pretty hit-or-miss sound for me too, so I'm always particularly happy to find something there to enjoy.

Re:Colorful Arty
1) Solid pick! It's catchy. Leaves more of an impression on me than other Harvest Moon music I've heard. Thinking of life sim menu music reminds me of New Leaf's lovely main theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1tvlDEPaXw
2) Wow, this song is excellent. I didn't expect to hear a new song I liked this much so soon. I wish it was longer, so I had more time to enjoy it. I might need to borrow this for my next trivia game / listening party, actually. I can't think of many visual novels that I haven't played that I still know music from, but Rose Guns Days is one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H67FyERmrAE
3) Lots of incredible games in 1996, but SMRPG is a reliable pick. There's many, many songs on it that I enjoy, including this one! Another 1996 soundtrack I quite like is Kirby Super Star: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se1uh3PS78Y
Re:Proxima
1) This is cool one, thanks for sharing. Particularly happy to see something obscure like the BBC Micro represented. I alluded to it in my writeup, but I love how old games had this catchy melodic main menu themes. So many good ones. I did a bit of digging and found a menu theme I like from another rare system, the Sharp X68000. Code-Zero's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVuEsSnhxRs
2) Touhou has soooo much great music! Also seeing this made me facepalm a bit since I completely forgot about Touhou when I was picking menu themes. Scarlet Weather Rhapsody itself has a great one! That said, this category is for games I haven't played, not menu themes. My favorite from a Touhou I haven't played is probably this one from Hopeless Masquerade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZOnG5vAj60
3) We talked about it on the discord, but 1982 is really hard to find music for. I'm a little impressed you found the one you did. Pole Position is one of the few that comes to mind for me here, personally: https://youtu.be/Wql1DH8PYYU?t=75
Re:IchoTolot
1) Hey, this one's really cool. I dig the intensity. Surprisingly, I don't think I had ever heard it before, despite seeming quite popular... so thanks for sharing! It reminds me a lot of the main menu music from Destruction Derby Raw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aBl3Qdqd-U
2) Yessss! This song is awesome. It's probably my favourite Mick Gordon song. I actually introduced it to the VGM group I hang out in last year and it was subsequently got into their annual 'Best VGM' contest. In terms of Mick Gordon specifically, I actually haven't played any games he's worked on, so I could also pick a Killer Instinct song for this category: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abDg6kuUscM
3) Lemmings has to be the choice for 1991, doesn't it? ;) I'm quite partial to Miners and Climbers myself. That said, a number of other high profile games came out in 1991 too. Final Fantasy IV is something a lot of people would jump to, because FF is kinda obsessed over in the VGM community. Instead of that though, I jump to different RPG from that year, Langrisser / Warsong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aivoL9NzN5w
Re:SQron188
1) One of the greatest of all time, not just among menu themes, but among all VGM. This was the first menu theme I thought of and would probably be my #1 pick as well. If I was going to pick another Amiga one, then either of the Alien Breed main themes would be what I go to next. I already posted one of those on the discord though, so I'd have gone with Hybris instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Siwd7b0iXOc
2) Solid pick. I haven't played anything in the franchise, or indeed many games at all from that era and older. Pondering C64 other music reminded me of one of my favorites, Monty on the Run: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EcgruWlXnQ
3) Parodius music is very overlooked. Some of the best classical arrangements in retro vgm and some sweet original compositions too. Big appreciation for this pick. As for 1990, a lot of my favourite NES pieces came out in that year... perhaps this one from Startropics is something I would have gone with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tz5L7hsG79I
Re:Mobius
1) Very cool and unique pick. Awesome atmosphere. It's funny, because the vgm trivia game I attended yesterday was focused on adventure games, and this game series actually came up a bit in discussion. I'm not familiar with it at all, but I have friends who would probably be eager to hear of other fans. In the spirit of that, here's an adventure game (of sorts) with a main menu theme I love, The Sexy Brutale: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP8RxMnqt94
2) One of my favourite FF6 songs! Probably the non-battle theme which stuck with me the most in the entire game when I played through it. Great pick. As far as FF games I haven't played go, a friend of mine got into FF14 recently and has been showing me songs from it. I'm quite partial to this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1cjZbNvztE
3) Good pick. As I mentioned in reply to SQron, 1990 has a ton of great NES music. Maybe the composers really hit their stride after spending a few years with the hardware? As far as MM3 goes, my favorites are Gemini, Magnet, Snake and Spark. The title theme is also great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2kTeh7FNl0
Spoiler
1) Favorite music that's used in a main title screen
Tetris99 main theme : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63hoSNvS6Z4
2) Music that you like from a game you haven't played yet
Cyberpunk2077 - Spoiler : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ayYeLLT8bs
3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born
Fallout1(released in 1997) - Acolytes of a New God : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h38zN_vF_dQ
Here is my own list. I tried my very best to NOT think about any answers to the descriptions while making them. Even though this is purely for fun I still wanted to be fair and... well... still make it interesting for myself :P
First Round
1) Favorite music that's used in a main title screen
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - Title Screen/Main Theme (https://youtu.be/Sd5hWTcn3N0)
If you go through the daily ritual of passing the title screen and selecting your save file too quickly, you might actually miss this extremely energetic music track which takes a bit to pick up but when it does it doesn't let up!
2) Music that you like from a game you haven't played yet
Final Fantasy 8 - Force Your Way/Boss Theme (https://youtu.be/HkDdv7IJL_g)
I mentioned on Discord a while back about loving the boss battle music from Final Fantasy 7 and was told that Final Fantasy 8's boss theme was also good. It turned out to be a perfect match for this description.
3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born
Mega Man 7 - Slash Man's Stage (https://youtu.be/OQ4PlWUCeEI)
The year I was born was 1995 so I decided to go with one of my favorite tracks from Mega Man 7 (with second place probably going to Wily Stage 1).
Re:Armani
1) Does this play on the menu? I thought this was the menu song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s26y2D2MMIA - Either way, Tetris 99 has some super good music. People might be really into Tetris Effect now, but for me, Tetris 99 is probably the best Tetris has ever sounded. Just love the energy.
2) Clever. A game nobody has played yet. I haven't listened to anything from this game yet since I haven't been paying much attention to its development/coverage, but I dig this song. Love those intense, overdriven synths. Nex Machina is another game I haven't played that has a cyberpunky synthwave soundtrack. I'm quite partial to this song from it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRlufMGfh0k
3) Too atmospheric for my personal tastes in music, but the original Fallout is definitely a game I'm interested in. I haven't played it yet, but it's something I want to try! 1997 had a lot of games with dark, moody, atmospheric vibes. One of the most notable is probably Diablo, from which this piece stands out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnMR6SOBa9k
Re:Nessy
1) Very topical pick. I'm surprised at how elaborate this song is considering where it plays... seems incredibly easy to miss it. Don't get why they would do that. Super Paper Mario has a long, fun, upbeat, chaotic menu theme as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsxnH-ijjSA
2) Force Your Way's pretty good. FF7's boss theme, since you mention it, is also great and possibly my favourite of the FF1-9 boss themes. I already replied to Mobius with a boss theme from an FF I haven't played... so I'm pondering a different RPG franchise I haven't played, Shin Megami Tensei: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGORm3P0F1w
3) Mega Man 7 OST is underrated. Slash Man is one of my favourites from it too. 1995 has a lot of good music actually, including two of my favourite SNES soundtracks: Chrono Trigger and Donkey Kong Country 2. Since you seem to like classic Square-Enix boss themes, I'll highlight Chrono Trigger's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZI7f1gcyns
Re: DireKrow's Response To My Picks
Super Paper Mario's intro song is probably my second favorite intro in the series. That one definitely gets right to the point with its fun and upbeat intro song. I'm honestly not sure why Thousand-Year Door's intro takes a while to get to that point. Perhaps they assumed you would still be on the save file screen when it finally kicks in, or maybe it was intended to hear only when you select a new save file and be prompted to type in a name for the file, which will definitely be the case if it's your first time booting up the game ???
I definitely agree about Mega Man 7's OST. Other honorable mentions could probably be Cloud Man's theme, Shade Man's theme, and I would even say Junk Man's stage is another one I like. Also funny you should mention Chrono Trigger I recently purchased it on Steam :D
Re: Everyone's Picks So Far
Wow there are some AMAZING tracks posted on here :)
Proxima's "Touhou 10.5", IchoTolot's "Inferno (Cinder's Theme)", SQron's "Turrican II" title screen, and Armani's "Tetris99" title screen are probably my favorites, and also that "Croc Theme" that DireKrow picked was way more catchy than I gave it credit for at first lol :P
For Colorful Arty's picks: Super Mario RPG is definitely a top tier soundtrack and that boss battle track perfectly highlights this. I also really enjoy the other boss battle track "Battle Against An Armed Boss"
Also nice rickroll mobius ;) Don't think for a moment that I didn't see it :D By the way really glad to see someone pick Top Man's theme, that theme is so highly underrated! When it comes to Mege Man 3's soundtrack Gemini, Magnet, Snake and Spark Man's theme are definitely top tier but I believe Top Man's theme is as well... it has such a catchy sound to it with a somewhat creepy undertone to it as well.
I'll have to wait a little to participate, I'm afraid, as I have drive issues! I am hoping to fix them tomorrow, though. I suppose I could link to music from YouTube, in the meantime, but considering that many YouTube channels uploading copyrighted video game music have been taken down recently, it would be very hard to find good quality uploads, I reckon. (on that note: I hope my channel will survive, as I've uploaded a good few video game soundtracks myself! :$)
Spoiler
First round!
(I've posted links to the music)
1) Favorite music that's used in a main title screen - Captain Planet and the Planeteers (https://youtu.be/FpFTXBxIZp0) on Amiga. It's a brooding and rhythmic synth piece that evolves into a full-on battle of the solos if you listen long enough! :crylaugh:
2) Music that you like from a game you haven't played yet - The first three Ace Attorney games (the music is used in Lemmings Plus VI, which I have played!) :P I particularly like the Trial (https://youtu.be/FnmEnjWy288) theme. It's quirky and dynamic, and having listened to more of it there's an incredible amount of variety. Exciting stuff, might just give these games a look!
3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born - Tetris by Alexey Pajitnov (first version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUdS4kR1z0E) released on Electronika 60 in 1984)
A piece that needs no introduction - here are my favourite versions of the main theme: GameBoy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmCCQxVBfyM) / Blitz (https://youtu.be/zz8m1oEkW5k) / Tetris 99 (https://youtu.be/63hoSNvS6Z4)
And here's a video following the evolution of the game and its music, great watch if you're a fan: Evolution of Tetris (1984 - 2020) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5r9GDwkMpY).

It's quirky and dynamic, and having listened to more of it there's an incredible amount of variety. Exciting stuff, might just give these games a look!
Spoiler
I can highly recommend the Ace Attorney series, it's quite good. The original trilogy is also available on a number of platforms now, including a Steam release.
Suggestion: maybe include the current set of prompts in the OP to make them easy to find?
I'm treating this as a music sharing thing with a theme, so if multiple came to mind, rather than picking one I just put both.
My Picks
Favorite Music in Main Title Screen: L2 Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZA9YtBbqb4); Cave Story Title Screen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-aitfK7jRE)
Music From Game I Haven't Played: Sparkster (SNES), Boss Battle 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9X9Hrm2DkI&t=1251s); honorable mention FF6 Opera Scene: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltoc0XD5waI) I've played FF6 a bit, but I've never beaten it and haven't gotten this far in the game; as far as the classic SNES RPGs go, I played Chrono Trigger first. On one hand, it's a great game, but on the other hand it's cleaned up the battle mechanics so much that the other ones feel really clunky by comparison.
It didn't come out my birth year in my country, but the releases in different countries were spread out over several years and one of them overlaps, so close enough: Pokemon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow: Professor Oak's Lab (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxPZB2FZwlY)

I notice megaman has came up a few times, I don't know much about that game but I do hear that those games are meant to be super hard to complete without cheating
1.1:
Favourite music, now that's almost impossible to do within an hour. :P I'd have to first think of nominations for a while, and then listen to them all to rate them. I've got a list of nominations for Menu music for a video that I would like to do once... but that's a bit different from Title Screen music, I'd say.
After a minute of contemplation...
Spoiler
I will go with Mario Kart Super Circuit's title theme!
This one's a bit special because it's got two different intros. For most of the game, you'll hear this intro (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/gameboy-advance-gsf/mario-kart-super-circuit/01%20Intro.mp3), but when you've got a *** rating on all Super Circuit cups you will hear this intro (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/gameboy-advance-gsf/mario-kart-super-circuit/03%20Night%20Intro.mp3) instead. Both intros are followed up by this (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/gameboy-advance-gsf/mario-kart-super-circuit/02%20Title.mp3). :)
It's just so good!! :D If only Nintendo wouldn't have compressed the samples down so much, so it would sound a bit cleaner... Still, this is a beautiful theme, that really makes you excited to get into the game. :)
1.2:
Hm, a game I haven't played yet...
Spoiler
I suppose Donkey Kong Country 2 would count? It's not on Switch yet and I haven't got an SNES... I have listened to it a whole, whole lot, though, because I find it very beautiful. I could pick any theme from the soundtrack, I suppose, but right now I feel like picking In a Snow-Bound Land (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-snes-spc/donkey-kong-country-2-diddys-kong-quest/25%20In%20a%20Snow-Bound%20Land%20.mp3). :) Clear inspiration from Antarctica by Vangelis, I'd say, but that doesn't make it any less good. ;)
However, you could say that doesn't count, as I have played the game on GBA. Here's from a game I haven't played at all, then:

Kokiri Forest from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-64-usf/legend-of-zelda-the-ocarina-of-time/06%20Kokiri%20Forest.mp3)! I don't think I've ever played any version of this game; I haven't even seen a walkthrough of it. ;) I've listened to its soundtrack numerous times, though, because it's a Koji Kondo classic!
1.3:
I could only think of one game that was released in my year of birth, 1999, and it is my most played game of all time.
Spoiler
I am talking about Re-Volt! My father got this game from Abandonia in 2007 and I started playing it then too. I had numerous breaks, but since 2015 or so I am part of the Re-Volt community, so even when I'm not playing it I have to do with it. ;) However, interestingly, I don't know the soundtrack well at all! This is because the soundtrack was considered copyright-unsafe by Abandonia, and as such excluded from the download. I got so used to playing without music that I don't want to play with it now. :P I got the N64 version fairly recently though, so I know some of the tracks from there. I'm not particularly fond of the style of the soundtrack, but I'll find one I like. ;) Ah, right, I can dig this one (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/sega-dreamcast-dsf/re-volt/T-8109N_07.mp3)! The tracks aren't named on Zophar and I honestly don't know the name either. :P (the tracks do have names, though)(this is from the Dreamcast version of the game, I'm not sure how different it is to the pc version)
Responses to Colorful Arty's picks
1.1: Heyy, that's a nice pick. :D I tried arranging that for piano at some point, but it didn't really work out (not enough hands :P). But yeah, a great song, and it fits the mood very well! ... and now I just realised that my actual favourite title theme is probably the one from Harvest Moon: Animal Parade... oh well, maybe I can use that one later for a different question. :P
I actually also thought of Baba Yetu, and also thought that it wouldn't quite fit the challenge.:lix-wink:
1.2: I had never heard of that game (nor have I heard of CLANNAD other than from your videos :P). But it sounds interesting! I couldn't really follow it at my first listen, but it sounds like a track that grows on you as you hear it more.
1.3: I'm a big Mario fan as you might know, but I'm not sure if I've heard this theme before! It's pretty goofy for a boss theme. :P
Responses to Proxima's picks
1.1: Well, I haven't ever heard of that, but it sounds pretty nice! Quite simple, but very pleasant. :) Honestly, I want to keep listening instead of moving on to the next pick. xD I'll add it to my Watch Later, I think I'll want to add this to my music collection when I can access it again.
1.2: I've heard a lot about Touhou music, but I haven't heard a lot of Touhou music. ;) This one is a bit too busy for my liking, but that does fit the games, I suppose. :P (the Touhou games I've seen were of the bullet hell genre)
1.3: Yeah, the older you are, the harder this is going to be. :P This is hardly notable, indeed.
Responses to IchoTolot's picks
1.1: I actually have not ever heard this! It's funky, though!
1.2: Nor this one. But wow, almost 3 million views on YouTube?!? :o Wow, this is quite rough .:lem-shocked: It's long too, I won't listen to the full thing. I like it, though!
1.3: Aah, good one. ;) I don't think this is a very popular track, though! Not one of my favourites either, I've got to say. But every track in the PC-Adlib Lemmings soundtrack is good. :)
I love how this one is so pleasant on the ears, while your other two picks for this round are rather rough. :P
Responses to SQron's picks
1.1: Aah, Chris Hülsbeck! Not sure if I'd ever heard this one, but it's great for sure! Good pick. Pumps you up!
1.2: Wow, that's a homebrew game? Looks and sounds very official! Nice one. :)
1.3: That's another game I'd never heard of! You have played it, I assume?
Responses to DireKrow's picks
I don't think you're supposed to pick your favourite unless the category says so. :P I might ask about that in the discussion thread if it seems an issue.
1.1: Groovy indeed! Agreed, it's nice when title themes make you want to jump into the game. :)
1.2: It's interesting that you say most music you listen to is from games you haven't played yet. I don't think that's the case for me. Nice pick! Reminds me of the kind of stuff on SupraDarky's best vgm list (sadly his channel got terminated yesterday... :().
1.3: Might've listened to Mega Man X before, not sure! Nice music indeed, though.
Responses to mobius' picks
1.1: Another game I've never heard of. The theme really fits the cover art, I wonder what kind of a game it is!
1.2 Nobuo Uematsu is the only video game composer I know of whose video game tracks have been featured in film music collections and main-stream piano books. Maybe that's understandable, though, his music is of quite a high quality. :) (but personally I think not only his is :P)
1.3: Cool. :)
Responses to Armani's picks
1.1: I like that one, but I don't recall it playing on the title screen. ??? Might just remember it wrong!
1.2: 20 million views for a video game music video?!?
1.3: That is scary! Not enough happens in it for my liking, but I suppose that that adds to the atmosphere in-game. Lol, just when I pressed pause on the video the actual church bells started sounding (it turned 9 o'clock), that was weird. xD
Responses to Nessy's picks
1.1: Oh yes! It's been a while since I listened to Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. It's a really unique soundtrack. And this main theme is really good!! Nice one. :)
1.2: Heeey, I know that track!! I didn't know it was from Final Fantasy, though! Wow, this is strange, it's been years since I heard this. :o I think this was in some Flash game I played as a kid, maybe one of the Sonic RPGs. It's quite nice. :) I know Dancing Mad and One-Winged Angel, but hadn't heard this one since hearing it in that Flash game!
1.3: Pretty good!
Responses to Turrican's picks
1.1: Second Chris Hülsbeck theme for this question! Interesting pick!
1.2: Well, that's a bit chaotic. :o
1.3: Hm, I couldn't find anything either!
Responses to WillLem's picks
1.1: Wow, that's a bit long for me right now. :P Even assuming it loops at the half-way point of the video. ;) I skipped around a bit, and I think I can see what you mean by the battle. :o
1.2: Yes!! That is great. I forgot how good it was. I played Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney with my brother on vacation to England last year. We enjoyed the music quite a lot too! Even before playing the game, I knew the Turnabout Sisters theme, which is amazing. I should maybe add the soundtrack to my collection some time (from a rip, of course, because I don't suppose this was released commercially...).
1.3: Tetris is a classic indeed! I added the 'evolution' video to Watch Later. :)
Responses to Dullstar's picks
I will only listen to the first of your picks if you give multiple, to save time. ;)
1.1: Yes, nice one! I know it, of course. ;)
1.2: I'd never heard of that game, though! Nice track.
1.3: For the first Pokémon game, that is an interesting pick! I thought you would've gone for the Poké-Center theme, or Pallet Town, or Route 1, or even the Bike theme, but not this! It's not bad, but it's so short. :P
Responses to grams88's picks
1.1: I'm always surprised to see ST music in any list, but I do recall you being a fan. ;) I did not know this one, but it is very interesting! Very unusual vibratos and glissandos. I like it, though, I'll add this to my collection as well, I think. :) The graphics look ridiculously good for the ST by the way, I should play this! :o Hey, seems like I knew of the game before, I looked up a gameplay video and I have my thumb up on one of the comments. :P
1.2: Why is there applause in the music? :P
1.3: That video isn't great for listening to the music, it's got sfx in it. :P I know the music from Lemmings though, and it's very good!
Man... That took an hour longer than I had planned. :lem-mindblown: I guess I should have expected it to take so long. :lix-laugh: It's really cool that so many people participated, thank you all! If you can, include a sentence or two about your pick, I think that makes it more fun. :) Unless other people disagree, of course. ;)
Now that I think most people have uploaded their choices, I'll start giving feedback on the tracks I listen to, and will update this post as I listen to more.
Responses to Proxima's choices
1) That's an old school title screen theme if I've ever heard one. I like it. A bit of a sad tone, but an enjoyable song.
2) THIS THEME IS EPIC. I was hooked immediately upon hearing it (I'm a sucker for a good violin). And then how it turned slightly mariachi-esque halfway through blew me away! I'll remember this one for sure!
3) Yes that would be a tricky year to find a video game title screen theme from. I remember playing Mr. Do! as a kid. I always thought of it as a slightly worse version of Dig Dug, but the death theme is forever ingrained in my head.
Responses to IchoTolot's choices
1) A rocking one to be sure, those guys looked like they were having fun playing this one. It seems very you; have you put this song in a Lemmings level before? It sounds familiar. I like it.
2) Another rocking one. You definitely have a knack for picking the rock songs. ;) I love the guitar in this one.
3) Funny you pick that DOS Lemmings song of all of them, as that one tends to be on my lower end for the DOS songs. I prefer Rondo Alla Turca, Patience, and the Infernal Galop as my favorites, but this one is still very enjoyable! It's just a bit quiet for a DOS song when compared to the others.
Responses to SQron's choices
1) A very nice title screen theme. Turrican 2 has some nice music to it, and this one definitely fits with the rest of the soundtrack. I especially love the part at around the 1:20 mark.
2) Interesting track. Is it my imagination, or does the audio seem lower quality than the Turrican 2 track? I don't know. It's a nice one for sure.
3) Never heard of this game before, but it has a great track name. I love how it turns into the Dance of the Reed Flutes!
Responses to DireKrow's choices
1) Dude, this theme is banging! I LOVE the jazzy feel of it! Even though this is my first time hearing it, it feels nostalgic to me for some reason. The piano in particular is so good!
2) Epic rock song. I love the how the piano adds an extra something to the overall rocking feel of the song. It just really pushes it over the edge.
3) I never got into Megaman X. I played it a little bit, but I just preferred the classic series. That said, this song is pretty great. Definitely better than most music from Megaman 7 which was on the same system.
Responses to mobius's choices
1) Never heard of this before. I like the science-fiction feel it has, especially when the electricity sounds start.
2) I just found one of my new favorite video game tracks ever. I have never played this FF game, so I don't know where it plays, but I can perfectly picture the setting, a rainy town near a forest, where you're looking for someone. This music does such a phenomenal job of painting a picture in your head!
3) I love the Mega Man 3 soundtrack, and Top Man's stage is no exception! Even though I'd rank it as one of the weaker robot master stage songs, it's still super good, which goes to show how good the soundtrack is. The music really made this stage for me.
Responses to Armani's choices
1) Oh yes, I love the Tetris Type A theme, and the Tetris 99 remix of it is truly epic! One for the ages!
2) Love this song. Definitely not the kind of song you'd expect to hear in a video game, but the guitar(s) just make this super epic.
3) Very atmospheric. I'm sure I'd appreciate it more had I played Fallout before, but I haven't. It definitely sets the scene, but it's not music I'd go out of my way to listen to.
Responses to Nessy's choices
1) Ah, Paper Mario. I love the soundtracks to these games, and Thousand Year Door's title screen is definitely one of the best! Indeed, I missed out on the song it turns into after around 20 seconds unless I got a game over, where it skips straight to that part.
2) More Final Fantasy music I haven't experienced before. A very nice song; it does sound a bit familiar to me though.
3) I always thought Mega Man 7's soundtrack was a bit lackluster compared to the NES Mega Man games. That said, Slash Man's theme is one of the best from the game. I like how it combines Wave Man's theme with Quick Man's.
Responses to Turrican's choices
1) Ooh, more Amiga music. I never had an Amiga growing up, so almost every song from it is unfamiliar to me. This one is very nice; I love the gentle choir buildup in the background; it gives it an almost angelic effect.
2) Never heard of this game before, but man is the music good! It almost reminds me of a higher-quality version of a Genesis song you'd find in an old-school Sonic game.
3) Suddenly I feel like the young'un now. Yeah, it would be hard to find video game music made in 1978.
Responses to WillLems's choices
1) Nice theme from a game I never would have known exists. Amiga has some very good music, I'm learning.
2) I adore the Ace Attorney series, and their soundtracks! The trial theme is indeed amazing, although I think the trial theme from Justice for All is the best; it just fits the courtroom feel so well. I strongly recommend these games to anyone looking for a good story.
3) Tetris theme is amazing. Probably the 8 bit song that is the catchiest and most loved.
Responses to Dullstar's choices
1) Both great title themes. I never played Lemmings 2, but it definitely has a catchy title theme, with a good amount of Sports tribe incorporated into the song. Cave Story has an epic soundtrack, especially the remastered one from Cave Story+ and Cave Story 3D.
2) Interesting game art. Cool song, as I'd expect from the SNES era.
3) I never could get into the Pokemon series, so I probably don't have the same appreciation for the soundtrack that others have. That said, this seems like a typical nice GBC song.
Responses to grams88's chhoices
1) This is a nice 8 bit song. I also like the graphics that were on screen. It seems like a cool game.
2) If it's a Star Wars game, it's going to have great music. This is definitely no exception.
3) Which song from Menace in particular? I grew up with DOS Lemmings which has a Menace song in it, which I always liked.
Responses to 607's choices
1) Oh man, I forgot about Super Circuit! It's probably my second least-favorite Mario Kart (after the SNES one), but it did have some good music. I never knew about the two different intros though, probably because I was never able to even get a gold trophy in every cup. :P
2) DKC2 has an epic soundtrack, and one of the few games I played on the GBA originally and still think the SNES soundtrack is superior, THAT'S how good it is! In a Snow Bound land is honestly one of the weaker tracks I'd say, but it's still a bop! Kokiri Forest is one of the classics of the N64 era, and one of my most nostalgic tracks. I strongly recommend playing OOT eventually; it's my #1 favorite game of all time!
3) I've never heard of Re-Volt before. This track is a nice one; I love how the guitar? sounds. That opening instrument has such a nice sound to it. I also love the part at 1:20!
Responses to Lana's choices
1) I've heard this one by watching a few of Simon's Jazz streams. This whole game has a nice soundtrack, and this one is no exception.
2) Oh yes, this track is amazing! I am familiar with this track, not because of the game, but because this track is used in a Mega Man Rom Hack that I've played: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_GVjEtITM8
3) The only Sims game I've played is a little bit of 3. That said, I love this piano song a lot; I'm a sucker for good piano songs. :)
Responses to JRT's choices
1) Nice one. I like how calm it is at first, and then it picks up into something more epic. It really does sound like the beginning of a space mission.
2) My only experience with AWESOME is a certain Lemmings level. It's interesting to hear the original game's music as opposed to the DOS Lemmings version of a particular track.
Ah, it seems that the little challenge I had with my friends made it to the Forum. I know that I'm late now (I was away for a few days) but if you allow me to, I'd like to put back my choices here too, since not everyone has access to Discord. Also, I'd like to point out that my choices are not my favourites per say, since my friends and I had additional rules to make things "spicier" (mine was to not reuse a game franchise twice).
Title screen music
Jazz Jackrabbit - Menu (https://vgmsite.com/soundtracks/jazz-jackrabbit/idykzmzkat/1-01%20Menu.mp3)
Energetic and simple, just like the game. I specially like the instruments used, it really feels like a cartoon. And it's a childhood favourite of mine, probably not my all time one but a nostalgic one.
Music I like from a game I haven't played
Actraiser - Fillmoa (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-snes-spc/actraiser/04%20Fillmoa.mp3)
That music is just epic. It sounds like a Castlevania song but a little more... upbeat? Anyway, I like to listen to it from time to time, but I'm not interested in playing the game. It's a god simulator for the SNES and it's like if you mashed, well, Castlevania and SimCity together, so it's not really my cup of tea.
Music in a game released the year I was born
The Sims - Under Construction (https://vgmdownloads.com/soundtracks/the-sims-original-video-game-soundtrack/rqcikowf/04%20-%20Under%20Construction%20%28Build%201%29.mp3)
The Sims. Just... the freaking Sims. That game IS my childhood. The time I passed while playing it would be astronomical. Not only it got released the year I was born, it almost got released the month I was born. The choice was rough too, all the tracks from the game is god-like! The build mode and it's passionate piano, the buy mode and it's optimism, and the jazz themes from the Hot Date expansion... Maybe it's why I like jazz so much.
Willlem Spoiler
Spoiler
Ace Attorney, that does have some very good music in it, I remember the time my brother was playing this and he shouted at the DS I think you had to shout guilty or something like that, it was kind of funny. I really do like the music of this game I have to say.
607 Spoiler
Spoiler
You pick a quick song there, well I guess it is the intro music, it does sound quite a good one and gets you into the game itself.
Kokiri Forest from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time! (that does seem to be a popular choice, Nice music though
Re-volt, I knew you pick that one. Re-volt is a really good game and choice, I would say its got to be the best RC car game out there, can't beat it. I notice the re-volt community are making tracks for another game I love which is POD, the tracks look well made with a lot of work going into them.
As the next round is about to start, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions:
* I know it's not always possible, but please try to find videos of the music at its normal length rather than "extended". It takes enough time as it is to listen to all the entries without some of them being spread out for half an hour!
* If you have a playlist link (it will have "&list=" in the middle), cut out the "&list=" and everything after that. Again, this just makes it easier to listen to your picks.

I see what you mean, but most videos on YouTube fade the track out after the track's played twice (that's what I do myself :P). I don't know of many that fade it out after one.

It's alright. If it turned into a discussion then yes.
So I wasn't expecting so many people to participate which is awesome! However, it does mean that maybe it's for the best to slightly tweak the deadline for this round to give people more time to listen and respond. So I think I'll change the end of this current round to
July 25 at 13:30 UTC.
To quickly summarise a discussion we just had on discord:
I agree with Nessy that with the participation level being so high, it makes sense for each round to last longer than the originally planned 3 days, so that people have time to listen and respond to each other's picks. However, participation level will probably stay high, so it would be best to stick to the same round length throughout the game. I felt that going all the way up to 7 days would slow things down too much, as while it's nice to have time to respond properly to each other, I'm also excited about getting the next set of prompts. I think 5 days per round is a good compromise.

1. Buried In Time title screen/intro.

Pretty good atmosphere in that one, nice.
@DireKrow
Spoiler
1) Oh yeah, Allister Brimble's good in Alien Breed Tower Assault, Alien Breed 2, or All Terrain Racing.
2) Some of the best C64 music I know, Turrican 3 (it's a fan game BTW!)
3) That's great to read! So cool to see someone appreciate Parodius for its music as well! Cheers!
I've seen Diablo mentioned in another reply. I've played that quite a lot, my favourite track is "Catacombs".

You know what, I've beaten Fallout 1 fairly recently. For the eighth time, I think. ;P

I must've heard that Z-Out theme somewhere, I know it! Anyway, it's a great one!

I myself enjoy the Amiga version of the title theme of Menace the most. Nice choice!
@607
Spoiler
Donkey Kong Country 2!  I really like nearly all the music in this game, which I can't say about most of the games I know! The ice level track is no exception.
When it comes to Parodius, then of course I've played it! I've even got a longplay of it on my channel, look: https://youtu.be/qPaBs4rlcTw?list=PLh-NqKHZgzK32XFIASCQlGs71wOh3ltPC
@Colorful Arty
Spoiler
2) Well, to begin with, the 1) title theme is the Amiga version; the track I put in 2) is a tune from C64! They're simply different machines. If you mean the intricacies of the quality of the videos on YouTube, then I don't really know.
3) The soundtrack of Parodius is comprised mostly of renditions of classical pieces like that, so it's similar to Lemmings in that regard, and I really recommend it as the music is pulled off masterfully, some of the best ever VGM, in my opinion, and particularly on SNES!
Really a great variety of tracks here!
@Arty No I haven't put my first song in a lemmings level yet, but I did a let's play of the game on my YouTube channel.
I noticed that there were quite a few MegaMan tracks here. I must confess though that I never had a nintendo console so nearly all of mario and megaman passed me completely. I only had a gameboy back in the days apart from access to a PC. So it's nice to hear some tracks I don't know about here!
It's also nice to see Jazz and Turrican music as through SQron and Simon I was already introduced to quite a few of them. :)
I loved the atari st version of the Titus the fox music, it felt very atmospheric and made the game more magical and interesting. Cool I noticed Jazz Jack rabbit as well getting featured, the music is actually quite good in that one, it reminded of the days my brother and I were doing a competition against each other to see who would get the furthest.
Sorry I haven't gotten to everyone.
Spoiler
1: Star Ruler - Star Ruler - Artem Bank.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvAmCDOnbko
The whole soundtrack is fantastic. If you want 90 minutes of mostly chill electronic music, give it a listen.
2: Awesome - Boss - Tim Wright
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGjVE35EmxQ
Again, good soundtrack all round from Tim Wright. Never played it. I like all the tracks but this one would be great as a Drum & Bass reimagining.
3: 1986, I'll get back to you. I guess pick the fave tracks from Metroid or Castlevania, neither of which I've played.
I wish I could put 2004 - CIV IV - Baba Yetu so I could be 16 again.
Uggghhhhh, Nebulus was 1987, so close.
Responses to LanaAndCo's picks
1.1 I probably would've picked Jazz Jackrabbit if the prompt was asking for menu music specifically!
1.2 Interesting track!
1.3 Woohoo, Jerry Martin! Yeah, I got to love jazz through SC3K's soundtrack. :) It also introduced me to minimalism, even though I didn't know it at the time, of which I became a big fan when I learnt about it in school. :) Maybe a track from that game will be appropriate later. ;) I've never listened much to the soundtrack of The Sims though, I'll try to remember to do so!
Responses to JRT's picks
1.1 I like it! Doesn't sound like electronic music to me, though. :P Seeing it had a commercial release, I was hoping it would be on StreamingSoundtracks.com, but unfortunately not. Might still give more of the soundtrack a listen some time if I remember. :)
1.2 That's Amiga music? Woah. :o Very cool!
1.3 Baba Yetu is from 2004? :o I thought it was from around 2010! Nebulus would've been a good pick from 1987, indeed.
Second Round!
1) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
2) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
3) Favorite final boss battle music
Round will end on July 30 at 14:00 UTC
Round TwoSpoiler
1) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
This one was really tricky for me, since there are so many that I love. Paper Mario has the best credits ever, but I'm not sure if the theme is the best (plus it's like a 10 minute track divided in two, so no one wants to listen to that) In the end, I went with a classic from my childhood: Frogger - He's Back! It's a beautiful medley of many of the other tracks in the game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjCf3aCkGfg
2) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
This one was easy: Village of the Blue Maiden from Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures. This is an amazing theme (even though you only hear it for like 10 seconds), but I HATE this game so much. It's a complete failure of a multiplayer game, but I could write an essay on why it's a bad game. No one wants to hear that, so just listen to this amazing music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ErPnv2V8Yg
3) Favorite final boss battle music
This one was easy. It's got to be Guardando nel Buio from the HD Remake of Kingdom Hearts. I don't know if I'll ever hear a more epic final boss song than this one. The intro and the part at 1:41 always give me chills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wsB5mZRp5I
I apologize for the extended version. It was the only one I could find that didn't have audio issues or spoilers. The loop ends at 2:12.
My second round:
Spoiler
1) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
This has to go to Command & Conquer Red Alert 1 - Reload Fire, I link the remastered version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ctlK_ag0oA
It was one of the first games I completed and it took ages back then! The music plays during the credits of both campaigns.
2) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
I can only choose between very few games here as I usually inform myself before buying/playing. So it goes to a track from a game that I played just to see how bad it really came out and the soundtrack was the ONLY part of it that was acceptable! Otherwise I cannot stress enough how terrible this game is :XD:
Command & Conquer 4 Tiberian Twilight - The End Of All Things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hfwXPrQYWA&list=PL10F91B1DD8074E40&index=20
3) Favorite final boss battle music
This was very tricky for me: A large portion of games I play don't have a final boss, only a final level/stage at most. From the remaining I narrowed it down to 2 choices and decided on this one:
Mick Gordon - The Icon Of Sin (DOOM Eternal OST): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SQYRT26mPE&t=122s
I especially love the metal choir in there which Mick assembled for the tracks of the game. It's just one of the best tracks for fighting a giant demon while ripping apart the smaller ones that come for you and it's literally ripping here. You can really see in the game that you are the one the demons fear and that it's not the other way around - this shines through especially before you execute them. Little compilation for that (maturity waring!) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stJ-d8ua6lY
Some may even argue for it to be the most christian game out there as you really "tidy up" hell's forces here. ;P
Credits music
Kirby Super Star - Staff Roll (https://vgmsite.com/soundtracks/kirby-super-star/yatxwtaqnq/65%20Staff%20Roll.mp3)
This is truly one of the closest to my heart. Each time I listen to it, I'm getting very emotional. While I didn't grow up with the original version, I do prefer it over the DS remake, the one that I had. In the SNES version, I feel like the sound is richer (which I assume is normal, the SNES did have a better soundchip than the DS if I remember correctly).
Music I like from a game I don't like
Cocoto Kart Racer - Heaven (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-ds-2sf/cocoto-kart-racer/07%20BGM%20%2307%20%5BMUSIC_HEAVEN_THEME%5D.mp3)
This game... ahahah... It's the poor man's Mario Kart. I can't recall if I had this one before Mario Kart DS or not but what I'm sure of, it's that this game isn't really good. I just love to hate it. Some of the musics are nice to listen to at least, especially this one. Too bad that I can't dissociate it from the freaking tight 180° turns of the racetrack on which it plays!
Final boss music
Puyo Puyo - Final of Puyo Puyo (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/sega-mega-drive-genesis/puyo-puyo/12%20-%20Final.mp3)
Now, here's a boss fight I never got to (I seriously suck at Puyo Puyo). I always thought that the best music genre for the MegaDrive was hard rock/metal. This track is no exception and is even one of those I like the most. Too bad that my only chance to heard it while playing is in the two players mode of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine...
Second Round
1) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
Ori and the Blind Forest - Light of Nibel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN_LvY97Rco
The credits music to my all time favourite game soundtrack and one of my all time favourite games. I cried the first time I heard this. Also, even after hearing this a bunch due to speedrunning the game, I'm still not tired of it.
2) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
Risk of Rain - Surface Tension
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzJlzGaQFoc
Very difficult category for me because I am picky about which games I play. Consequently, I tend to enjoy everything I play because I only play something if I'm quite sure I'll like it. So I played Risk of Rain 2 first and quite enjoy it, however when I went back to Risk of Rain 1 after playing 2... oof. Did not like it at all. I felt it was so punishing and janky. That said, RoR1's OST is far superior to RoR2's OST imo, so... that makes it a good fit for this category. Love this song.
3) Favorite final boss battle music
Undertale - Megalovania
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FCvzsVlXpQ
It's a shame this soundtrack, and especially this song, are so overplayed that nobody can take them seriously anymore. Because I think it's freaking awesome. I still unironically love this song and could think of hardly any other final boss themes I like as much as this one.
Second round
4) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
"Further" (https://youtu.be/UnL3e7FAMF8) (Iji). No surprise that I love this game -- my username comes from it, after all :P I won't give out any spoilers here, but let's just say that the resolution of the storyline is really powerful, and this song fits so well with the mood of the ending and the themes of the whole story. This was an immediate choice.
5) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
Sports Tribe (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfCIKwCf9sc) (Lemmings 2: The Tribes). I know this will be a controversial pick, but I've never made a secret of the fact that I don't get on with L2 and its ridiculous bloat of skills, when the best thing about the original game was how much potential there was in just a few. Also, I could not think of any other song for this category; like DireKrow above, I have only really played games I like, especially in recent years.
6) Favorite final boss battle music
Donkey Kong Country (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQU7ml26JVM). This was a hard choice just because there are so many great themes I could have picked. But hey, this will always be a classic. DKC (1 and 2) have great soundtracks, including some themes I like even more than this, but for capturing the mood of an intense but fun final boss battle, this is perfect.
Second round:
Spoiler
1)Turrican II - Freedom (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-AfsmBBytM)
2)9 Lives - ingame music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYBQpPAhc4w)
3)Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen - Champion Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4vpdkEkup8)
Spoiler
SQron, my brother hates that game with a passion the nine lives game, it actually ends up not a bad game well a lot of people probably were not too keen on the controls of the cat but loved the music.
Proxima, I was wondering if that sports tribe song is from something else as well as lemmings, I could be wrong totally but that music I actually quite like. IT must be from another game surely, I'll leave that one to the lemmings experts. I did read somewhere that a lot of lemmings fans weren't too keen on the sports tribe music.
Ichotolot sure likes his real time strategy games similar to my brother. We used to do the imaginary where I pretended the computer opponents were characters from the red alert games, I'm probably still learning to play that game as my brother gives me challenges on that one. I actually think you might like the Star Trek Amada game, it's a real time strategy.
Re:Turrican R1
1. I was unfamiliar with this one. It's decent. I really should go through all of the Amiga main themes at some point since there's some real incredible ones. In fact, this one inspired me to do a bit of searching and I ended up finding a new menu theme I quite like, from A Prehistoric Tale: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bzFbrufMyw
2. Hey, a Basiscape (http://www.basiscape.com/english.html) soundtrack! They're a bit hit and miss for me as a group, but this song you linked is pretty good. I have several acquaintances who are obsessed with them though, so they'd be super happy to know you picked something from the group. I don't think I've played any SHMUP that they did the music for myself, so I can share one of my favourites pretty much freely. From DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeyVsRCfGHg
3. Apparently the original Space Invaders released in 1978 and is considered by some to be the first game ever to feature continuous looping background music... even if it's just 4 notes repeated. The more you know.
Re:WillLem R1
1. Amiga is quite the popular choice so far for this category, as expected from a Lemmings forum. This one's pretty good. Continuing from my response to Turrican, I did some more searching (since Amiga isn't my strong point) and found another new menu theme I like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTzVI02TjQg
2. I love the Ace Attorney series! If you're okay with a lot of reading, I'd highly recommend it. Unfortunately, I've played all but one of them myself, and the one I haven't I'm not familiar with its soundtrack either... so I can't link you any of my favourites in this category. So instead, have a chiptune I recently discovered from a game I hadn't heard of until recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1RzhSGR5cg
3. The Tetris theme is an absolute classic. I like it as well. Luckily, by 1984, music in games was becoming more common. I'm quite partial to the normal in-game music from Tower of Druaga https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTCywoVdgGA (0:07-1:02)
Re:grams88 R1
1. Pretty good. I don't think I'm familiar with any Atari ST music before now, so this was a nice thing to see. As I'm unfamiliar with that system, I'll instead focus on the fact this is a peppy, energetic menu theme from an unusual source and recommend this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkYC9AhMLgw
2. JW-esque orchestral movie scores aren't really my taste, but it's good to see it represented. I think this is the first posted? I can't think of any orchestral songs in this style from games I haven't played that I really like, so instead I'll focus on the fact KOTOR is an early 2000s western RPG and recommend one of my favourites from Deus Ex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYqv75ANPik
3. This one is gameplay footage rather than the song. Can't hear the song too well since it shares sound channels with the sound effects. As for 1988, some pretty iconic pieces were released back then. Super Mario Brothers 3, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Mega Man II for instance. Keeping with the theme of intensity that Menace brings, I'm personally fond of this one from Ninja Gaiden: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2LF2t4YlBI
Re:607 R1
1. Very nice intro song. It's a shame a lot of people would probably skip over it considering where it plays. For me, when I think racing game with catchy, memorable title themes, my mind goes to Re-Volt's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tCMImYsCnE - Believe it or not, this was something I thought of back when I was making my own pick, but in light of your choice for #3, I feel the need to post about it~
2. DKC2 is one of my favourite SNES OSTs and David Wise is one of my favourite composers. Love them. Naturally then, I like the song you picked~ For DKC2, my favourite is Mining Melancholy, but... I've actually played the game, so I wouldn't be able to use for this category. Instead, I'll link the snow theme I really like from DKC Tropical Freeze: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdBpGPyGv40 - Quite a different take, focusing more on the intensity of climbing a snowy mountain rather than the beauty of winter as in DKC2's.
3. It's one of my favourite racing games from my childhood! Last year actually I rediscovered it via RVGL and still play it off and on to this day. Love to chat about this game. In terms of its music, my favourite is actually WestVolt (the song that plays in Ghost Town 1 & 2), but I enjoy basically every song, this one included. As for 1999 itself, a certain other racing game was also released that year with one of game's most iconic intro songs (which I also happen to love): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQMlzcbfz0I
Re:LanaAndCo R1
1. Awesome song and one of my favourite selections so far in the thread. Love the bouncy rhythm. Both Jazz Jackrabbit games have such good music. Have another funky theme song, ToeJam & Earl's: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kv5KuryOe4
2. Ay, my favourite Actraiser song. Very good choice. I haven't played this game either actually. I definitely agree it sounds like a Castlevania song. It was composed by Yuzo Koshiro, who is great and made a lot of other music I also really like from games I haven't played (including a Castlevania, coincidentally). I particularly love some of the songs they've done for Etrian Odyssey. My absolute favourites from the series have some incredibly intense FM synths which aren't to everyone's taste, so instead I'll link this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KmcSXVyzzM
3. Piano is actually my favourite instrument. This is a very good, upbeat, fun piano piece. Thanks a lot for sharing this one. I'll share one of my own that I like from 2000, albeit one with a far simpler composition. From Final Fantasy IX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxZlJGtFGcw
Re:JRT R1
1. This one's a bit plain for me, admittedly, but it's nice to see some modern 4X represented. It's funny you mentioned Baba Yetu in #3, because if you really wanted to use it... you could have used it here, since it's Civ IV's title theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJiHDmyhE1A
2. I can't believe they straight up named the game 'Awesome'. Pretty good song. Aside from Lemmings I haven't played any Amiga games so I could put any here, this game included. I do like the one that was featured in Lemmings itself too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-3FySgabMA
3. Arcade music was hitting its stride in 1986, so even if you didn't want to pick a Castlevania, Zelda or Metroid song, you could always enjoy a nice Magical Sound Shower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzsqx5uXmpA
Will go through all the R2 picks at the end of the round. I probably won't recommend songs in them anymore because it takes ages to do (this post literally took me 3 hours lol).
Spoiler
1
Perfect Dark - End Credits
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRdXiUwQjiQ
There are two tracks here, "End Credits" and "Alien Invasion". Both great.
2
I'll get back toy ou
3
Soccer Kid - End Boss
https://youtu.be/uA1aQNSqBio?t=2234
It's all bosses except the second one actually, its pretty funky.
Second Round
1) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
Super Mario 64 - Staff Roll (https://youtu.be/4Ruqn1Lnexs)
The credits sequence should not only visually show you that you completed a game, but it also needs to make you feel like you finished it and one of the best ways to do this in my opinion is in the music that plays. The upbeat staff roll for Super Mario 64 is one of the best examples that I can personally think of and one that always comes to mind when thinking about the general topic of feeling accomplishment in video games, especially around the 1:12 mark of the video I linked.
2) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
Paper Mario: Sticker Star - Tower Power Pokey (https://youtu.be/PZ7nAKmIy0s)
I'm not a huge fan of the later Paper Mario games after Super Paper Mario (which is a game I can still say with confidence is actually decent), but the soundtracks of these games remain top tier. My choice for this one is the energetic theme that plays during a specific battle against a desert themed boss.
3) Favorite final boss battle music
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - In The Final (https://youtu.be/faA3IMDbb5I)
Sadly I was unable to find a short video of good quality for this one but the loop ends around the 1:30 mark.
This was an insanely difficult one to choose a music track for, but then I remembered this one EPIC track. It isn't the most over-the-top final boss track ever, but it doesn't have to be. It perfectly captures the sinister and impeding doom occurring around you as you face off against the final foe.
Round 2 Picks
Credits Music: Cave Story (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnH06vr13Wg) makes a second appearance in my picks, mostly because of all the credits music I can think of, it's one that I find to be particularly memorable.
Music I like from game I don't like: Castlevania 3's Japanese release (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptgaCJSF7j8) has an amazing soundtrack (full playlist here) (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLgntNm0yymDxqON20-77GNHrIa0pS3Phq). While the international release's soundtrack isn't
bad, it does suffer from not having access to the amazing VRC6 expansion chip, which is easily my favorite of the Famicom's expansion chips. The music is great and it uses the VRC6 very well.
Me gushing over the VRC6
Its extra duty cycle options on its two pulse channels and its sawtooth channel make it an excellent compromise between being able to produce a variety of sounds and having lots of channels. It's outright better than the MMC5, as both provide 2 pulse channels, but the VRC6's are capable of making 4 additional unique duty cycles, and the VRC6 has a sawtooth channel that the MMC5 doesn't. The MMC5 can technically make one duty cycle (75%) that the VRC6 can't, but thanks to symmetry it sounds identical to the 25% duty cycle, which both chips can produce. The N163 and FDS can do arbitrary waveforms, which the VRC6 can't, but the FDS only provides one additional channel, while the N163's quality drops noticeably the more channels are added up to a maximum of 8. The VRC7 starts venturing into FM synthesis, so it's not really the same style anymore, and the sawtooth channel and duty cycle options are a considerable advantage over the ability to have additional noise channels you get from the Sunsoft 5B.
The game itself, however... ugh. I like Symphony of the Night and the similar Castlevania games that followed, but of the Castlevania games I've played that were released
prior to Symphony of the Night, I've hated all of them. The controls are a strong contender for the absolute stiffest I've ever seen (they're definitely the stiffest I've ever seen in a game that isn't generally considered bad), and the level design loves to present situations that would already be hard if the controls were fluid (why are there always medusa heads in the difficult platforming sections in all the classic Castlevanias?!) I find it kind of impressive that the series managed to last long enough for Symphony of the Night to be possible, considering how the earlier games are, but I guess things were different in the NES days, and these sorts of things were just more acceptable then than they are now.
I didn't select this particular song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzLxo5ggE6I) since I never made it that far in the game, but I've linked it anyway for a couple reasons: first, it's re-used in a later game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPDfc74foXk) that I actually think is good, and until I started sifting through the full OST I didn't know it debuted in this game. Second, it's probably the single track in the OST that benefits the most from the VRC6 - here's the regular NES version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Zmb2KGJcow).
Final Boss Music: Two picks for this one: First: Chrono Trigger: [Phase 1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X1-uqDYa7w) [Phase 2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QgUjqMxeXo) [Phase 3] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IevXx3yQ77s) Phase 1 uses Lavos's main theme, so it perhaps isn't quite what you'd expect for boss music, but it's still a great song and it fits the atmosphere quite well, I think. But I really like how Phase 2 incorporates elements from Lavos's main theme into something that sounds a lot more like a boss theme.
Second: This one's much, much shorter, but it's a memorable boss fight with memorable music, and it's the first cinematic boss fight I remember coming across: Super Metroid's Mother Brain fight. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwt740KznHE) The song's not quite as epic as Chrono Trigger's final boss music, but I've got a bit more nostalgia for this one.
Re: Colorful Arty's R2 Picks
Really good picks here especially that final boss track! Wow :lem-shocked: I also really love that Frogger one with all the little different animal sounds in the background as it really seems to fit the game itself. I also really like that Four Swords Adventure one, and I've actually never played that game. I've never even heard anyone talk about it that much even when the game was released. Your comment on it is honestly the first real thing I heard about it :P
Re: IchoTolot's R2 Picks
These Command & Conquer tracks are really good and I especially loved that credits one , but damn that Icon of Sin one... whoa! :lem-shocked: That one just sounds perfectly demonic and extremely fitting for that type of final boss (haven't played Eternal yet but have an idea on who the boss is from Doom II). I also couldn't help but chuckle when you mentioned it as the "most christian game" because my brother said the SAME EXACT thing to me not too long ago heh :P
Re: LanaAndCo's R2 Picks
I haven't played a lot of Kirby games :( but the ones that I have I've always LOVED the music so much and this credits track you posted is no exception. Amazing. The Cocoto Kart Racer one sounds very nice as well, and despite it being a racing game it sounds very relaxing as well. Finally, that final boss track is indeed epic. It's such a fast paced song that it really gets you pumped up.
Re: DireKrow's R2 Picks
That Ori and the Blind Forest credits track is beautiful. I haven't played the game (yet) and have heard nothing but good things about it. On the other hand Risk of Rain is actually a game I didn't know existed until I heard Arctic Oscillation from one of IchoTolot's contest levels of the same name. That game definitely has some good music and Monsoon is another one I like. Finally we have the one and only Megalovania :P I absolutely love this track as well and I agree on what a shame it is that it had to be overplayed and become almost a meme, but I still think it's a very memorable track and an epic final boss battle theme.
Re: Turrican's R2 Picks
SQron has introduced me to a lot of different music tracks from the Turrican series and man does it have good music. This credits track is no exception either. The Gran Turismo 6's track you choose has a very nice and calm little beat to it, and I also quite like that Einhander track.
Will get to the rest in time ;)
2.1:
Ah, that's easy. :P I made a top 15 credits themes last year: https://youtu.be/_05Q_vWNYKw I didn't get to know too many new themes in the past year, and I still stand fully behind this top 15, so you could add it to Watch Later if you'd like to have something to listen to later. ;)
But without further ado, my favourite credits theme is
Spoiler
that from Mario Kart Wii! It's really two themes, and they are mostly found separate on the internet, but I think they really belong together, and should be listened to as one whole. So here (https://youtu.be/VPCHiqtGscw) is a video on YouTube that shows the full credits. :)
I really wonder what tracks other people have picked for this one!!
2.2:
Aah, this is going to be a hard one, because while there are some games I've disliked (there aren't too many), some of them are so obscure I probably won't be able to find the soundtrack on YouTube. :P Actually, I am thinking of a game now, let's see... Nope, can't find it, as expected. :P I might upload it myself someday, but I haven't even finished the game yet, and I'm frankly not sure if I'd want to finish it again on pc to record the soundtrack, as if I recall correctly the levels were quite long and somewhat challenging...
Okay, there's another game I don't like that I played last summer, and I liked one of the tracks a bit.
Spoiler
Have some funky jazz (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sFBlHyPZdTlPI1WSy9uvZX3Dc_P0msva/view?usp=sharing) from Tom & Jerry Tales. :) Most of the music in the game isn't very good, but I liked this track. It's by far the longest in the game too. It plays in an overworld area though, if I recall correctly, and not in the actual levels, so you have to wait a while in order to hear it in full. ???
2.3:
Ooh, that's an interesting one, because I currently have a WIP boss battle track myself. ;) Although that's more like film music than video game music, because it tells a story rather than just setting a theme. But what
is my favourite boss battle music?
Spoiler
Eh, it probably has to be One-Winged Angel (https://open.spotify.com/track/02hiFgacAzz7zGl5EF53eo?si=nO9IJpOXRGa7pscgGiQI7g) by Nobuo Uematsu. I don't know much about the game it's from, but when I heard this track in SupraDarky's best vgm list my brother and I were flabbergasted. It is just amazing! And very long too, but I do not feel like it drags on at all, it's good throughout the entire 7 minutes.
If I were allowed to pick any final boss song, I probably would've picked Yoshi's Island's, as that's close to my heart, but I think my 'favourite' thing in any category should be my most rated thing in that category (of all the things I know of), and I am certain that I would not rate Yoshi's Island's final boss battle theme higher than One-Winged Angel. ;)
Hey all, mind if I join in? Since this game was first suggested, I didn't post in the topic expressing my interest, and I missed out on the first round. I was mostly worried about not being able to find anything, especially since there are so many games that I haven't even played myself. Also, sorry for cutting it so close to the closing time of the round. For future rounds, I'll definitely try and post earlier. No guarantees, but I will try and do so.
However, I was able to find some stuff for the second round, so here's mine.
Second round:
Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI)
This one, from a game called Portal. Not only is it awesome, it's hilarious. Definitely play the game if you haven't done so!
This next one was the most difficult for me, especially since I pretty much like every game I have ever played. However, after so much thought, this is probably my least favorite out of the ones I have played. Of course, I could had simply kept this one blank.
Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29DrBJqnZxY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29DrBJqnZxY)
This is from a game called Mission: T.H.I.N.K, as part of a series called the Super Solver series. This game is essentially a rip-off of Gizmos and Gadgets, a way much better game IMO. Here, it's mostly the same thing, but the puzzles aren't as varied and the strategy game you play against the bad guy is just plain dumb. Nevertheless, there are some music tracks I do like from the game, like the one I linked. Soft and easy going on the ears.
Favorite final boss battle music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrVSPKudHlI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrVSPKudHlI)
The music is from a game called Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow, which features the character Donald Duck and his alter ego Cold Shadow. I received this game as a present from the wife of my dad's friend a very long time ago. I grew up playing the PC version, not the console versions. Unfortunately, the PC version is very difficult to find these days.
The music I linked to isn't the music for the final boss, but rather the music that plays for every boss battle in the game when you reach the end of each stage. It's so much better than the final boss music IMO that I just had to include this music. However, even though I know it's not really allowed for this game per the rules, for comparison I'll go ahead and include the music for the final boss, which plays only in the final stage of the game. It's this one. Think most of you will agree with me that the first one is so much better.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRidM51E384 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRidM51E384)
Feel free to post for round 1 if you'd like too. Nothing saying you can't do that.
Third Round!
1) Music that seems to be underrated in your opinion (basically music you like that may not be liked as much by others)
2) Music you associate with frustration
3) Music that makes you feel nostalgic
Round will end on August 5 at 18:00 UTC
Also a quick note and/or reminder please feel free to continue discussing other people's choices for previous rounds (just please make sure you specify which round you are talking about), and if you are new to this game also feel free to post your answers for previous rounds as well (once again just specify for what round of questions you are responding to)!
I will try and get my feedback to the other round 2 choices out on the weekend. :)
For now my picks for round 3:Spoiler
1) Music that seems to be underrated in your opinion (basically music you like that may not be liked as much by others)
Hearts of Iron IV Soundtrack: Battle of Wuhan (a bit of unintentional irony here): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44RoK_4qAcQ
This track came into the game as part of the asian themed "Waking the Tiger" DLC and it quickly became my favorite track. The game is usually not well known for it's soundrack even though it's very enjoyable.
The game in general has a great sountrack with tracks for either the allies, axis or comintern sides - although I also modded in some playlists like some old german marches ;P. It just gets you into the mood of planning and starting another virtual WW2 with some wacky variations: Why not make britain communist this time, oh and france should bring Napoleon back, germany goes good guy democratic .... or maybe get empress victoria on the throne and also let the rest of the world decide randomly which side they align with! So much fun to have here!
2) Music you associate with frustration
Black Ice 9 - Duality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKNKpx1ghro
This track is part of the Mental Omega epsilon soundtrack. It's a great track, buuuut it plays at the start of a certain mission........ Singularity!
I cannot describe my frustraition fully enoiugh here, I need to show it to you!
Here is my 6th FAIL video of trying to beat that mission: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-xM1ehDrsY&list=PLKR1N9oJTTlIS5feh4iAtGOvCRisJChdu&index=19&t=0s
I should be successful in the next video, but in this one I fail after 90mins right before the end - literally!!!!!!!!! Jump to 1:30:05 for my moment of despair! I just had to get my units into that driller vehicle, after that I just cut the end of the video very short and be for myself a little bit. ;P
It's just frustraition and despair!:devil::devil::devil::devil::devil:
After being careful and battled my way through everything just to fail right before the end because of some random shit!!! 1 loss of a critical unit and I had to go again from the beginning. Good thing the mod now finally supports savegames!
3) Music that makes you feel nostalgic
That's a no brainer:
Command & Conquer Red Alert - Big Foot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy9tc6_Hhj8&t=38s
My first game after Lemmings and this song is the starting song to every mission and it's just excellent!
Underrated music
Puggsy - The Red Woods (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/sega-mega-drive-genesis/puggsy/09%20-%20The%20Red%20Woods.mp3)
Guess who is the composer of this game. That's right : Matt Furniss! That guy was one of the occidental masters of the MegaDrive soundchip. Anyway, I think that of all the music in this game, this one is probably my favourite, even tho I was close to chose Star Fall Lake. The OST is as underrated as the game in my opinion.
Music I associate with frustration
Ecco the Dolphin - The Vents (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/sega-mega-drive-genesis/ecco-the-dolphin/05%20-%20The%20Vents.mp3)
Just hearing this makes me mad... And I don't even recall why. It's been a long time since I played Ecco and the most of what I can remember was me getting lost in the arctic maze level and the freaking jellyfish and crabs coming out of nowhere! >:( To be fair, I think the whole game is frustrating.
Music that makes me nostalgic
Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move - Bubble Bustin' (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-snes-spc/bust-a-move/02%20Bubble%20Bustin%27.mp3)
While it's true that I never got a SNES (I was born way too late for that), this theme is still very nostalgic for me. How? Well... it was one of my first emulated game. Yeah, I know, it's not really legal... But still, if it wasn't for that, I would never have been able to play this classic puzzle game. I'll never forget when I finished it, it was really late and I was tired. And then, the end screen said : "Good Night". That was so wholesome for me.
Comments on R2
There were again a ton of great tracks in here.
I knew a few of them like the Portal, Undertale, Risk of Rain and Turrican ones, but as I had not played many Nintendo games at all for example - I mostly just had my PC - there were many new experiences for me in here.
Although I've heard the final boss music from Donkey Kong Country before as one of my mates back then had a Super Nintendo and I saw him beat the final boss. ;)
I also played the first few Pokemon games on the old game boys back then so i was familar with the excellent champoin theme here.
It really shows that we enjoy a lot of different games and therefore we are lucky to receive many different ones here and not just all from 1 game series. :)
Round 3Spoiler
1) Music that seems to be underrated in your opinion (basically music you like that may not be liked as much by others)
Basically any music from the Humongous Entertainment series of adventure games, but if I had to pick one, I'd pick the sunken ship music from Freddi Fish and Luther's Maze Madness. It has such an awesome nautical feel to it and really pumps the player up while perfectly setting the mood for the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qtuoi--RUR0
2) Music you associate with frustration
Oh man, while there are a lot of tracks I can associate with frustration, none fit more than Dark Impetus from Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrtz7L0nH-c
This plays when you fight the most stupidly cheap, unfair, and difficult boss I've ever faced in my life. I only beat him as every character earlier this year, and it is possibly the hardest video game challenge I've ever completed. You don't know the pain of an unfair boss until you fight this guy as Terra; at least the music is absolutely amazing.
3) Music that makes you feel nostalgic
Again, so many can fit here, but I have to go with a weird one - the multiplayer music from Donkey Kong 64. Some of my fondest memories come from playing multiplayer in this game with my siblings when we were young. Looking back, this multiplayer is severely flawed, but that didn't stop us from having a blast playing this for hours at a time! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvrYqMZjzi4
Oop, I'm a bit behind. :P I will listen to some submissions for round 2, but won't be able to finish that today.
Responses to Colorful Arty's picks
2.1: Huh, that seems like quite the obscure game! Nice medley, though! I think part of the game takes place in a jungle, and part of the game on a ranch? ;)
2.2: I have Four Swords on the GBA, but I haven't been able to play it because I have only one copy of the game. Maybe I'm not missing much? :P The music is nice, although it's not as special as I had expected it to be; it seems a simple remix of an existing theme (although I can't quite remember what the original theme is).
2.3: I hadn't heard that before! Quite epic indeed.
Responses to Ichotolot's pcks
2.1: That's quite cool! Not quite my cup of tea, but I did enjoy it.
2.2:
QuoteI can only choose between very few games here as I usually inform myself before buying/playing.
Haha, I'm quite the opposite, I like to buy games I've never heard anything about, so I can go in completely blind! ;) The only thing I want to be sure about is that the game is family friendly, and does not revolve around violence.
Not sure what to say about the track. :P
2.3:
QuoteSome may even argue for it to be the most christian game out there as you really "tidy up" hell's forces here. ;P
Tidying up hell's forces should be left to God, I think. ;)
Impressive track! It scares me a little. :P
Aah, I accidentally closed the tab I was writing this in... :eyeroll: But I make periodic backups in Notepad when I am writing long posts on forums that don't save drafts!
More of round 2!
Responses to LanaAndCo's picks
2.1: That's pretty cool! :) I can imagine this being quite nostalgic if you've actually beaten the game.
2.2: I've never heard of that game, but it sounds bad indeed. :P Not too impressed by the music track either, although it's not bad. I can easily imagine it being the best part of the game. ;) I do like the last part!
2.3: Heey, that's great! Another one that's going into my collection.
Responses to DireKrow's picks
2.1: Hey, a game to which the soundtrack was released commercially. ;) I know someone who's a big fan of these games and their soundtracks. Maybe I'll get them on Switch some day! Sounds like a good credits theme!
2.2: Another person who prefers to play games they like. :P Yeah, cool song! Somehow has an 'indie game' sound to it (and I see it is an 'indie game').
2.3: I haven't done too much exploration of Undertale's soundtrack yet; I still think I might play the game myself some day, and would like to have some surprises left then. ;) I obviously know MEGALOVANIA, though, and it is a great track!! I didn't know it was a final boss theme, though. :P The beginning of the track is the most well known, but it's got some other really fun themes also!
Nessy mentioned that this track became almost a meme: I would say that it definitely is a meme! But that's fine, so are Sandstorm, Never Gonna Give You Up, and Africa... all three of which are still good songs. ;)
Responses to Turrican's picks
2.1: Heh, fitting you picked Turrican. ;) At 0:27, it sounds very different suddenly than what I had expected! A bit Christmassy. :P And the rest of the track holds some more surprises! An interesting track. I like the last part best. I don't like that it loops, it's so long that I'd think the credits could be made as long, and it could rather have an ending.
2.2: Ah yeah, framerate issues are a big deal in racing games! The framerate in the N64 version (and probably the PSX version as well) of Re-Volt is terrible... xD The track does not seem special to me.
2.3: Hey, another video game soundtrack that's had a commercial release. The track Earthlight form this soundtrack is in my favourites on SST (http://www.streamingsoundtracks.com/). But this track does not at all sound like a final boss theme to me! Maybe that's why you like it so much? ???
Responses to Proxima's picks
2.1: English lyrics! Lyrics in general are rare in video games. Cool track. I imagine it has a lot more meaning if you've actually played the game (as I also imagine with Still Alive and Want You Gone).
2.2: I can totally imagine not liking Lemmings 2! The Sports tribe is not my favourite theme, but it's certainly good!
2.3: Ah yes, quite a unique one! The transition from the sea shanty to the boss theme is really good. Both individual parts themselves are also really good! ;) If I ever make a top 15 (final) boss themes, this will probably be in it.
Responses to SQron's picks
2.1: Hey, I like this one a lot more than that from the other Turrican! Still has a hint of Christmas around 2:20, to me. ;P This one sounds a lot more like a credits theme, though.
2.2: Yeah, cool theme! I saw it is also on Atari ST, so I listened to that one instead. ;) Loving the high arps. :P Not a fan of the drum sounds in either version, otherwise it might've been a collection candidate. ;)
2.3: I don't think I've ever heard the GBA remake! It's a bit too busy for me like this, I think. Can't quite enjoy it. Maybe I could if I'd listen to it more!
Responses to JRT's picks
2.1: That's a bit long, I'll listen for a couple of minutes. :P But wait, this is on the N64?!? Both the sound and the visuals are better than anything I've seen on that console, I think. Cool track! Reminds me of GoldenEye. Ah, I see Perfect Dark shares two of the three composers with GoldenEye!
2.3: Quirky! You probably should've linked to this video (https://youtu.be/fThPc2oxa20) at least, though.
Responses to Nessy's picks
2.1: That is very interesting!! I nominated Super Mario 64 for my top 15 staff roll themes video, but it actually didn't make it in, and if I'd make the list from scratch it would probably again barely not make it into the top 15. It's interesting that you put it as your number 1! It's certainly very good. :)
(see, favourite prompts can lead to interesting results, I just think most prompts should have more freedom for the picker ;))
2.2: Yeah, it seems like Miyamoto-san has lowered Paper Mario from amazingness to mediocrity... nice track.
2.3: Hey wait, that track was featured before in this game, right? It will be hard to find where with all the spoiler tags, though. :P Or did I get to it from elsewhere? I've heard this track recently, for sure. It's cool!
Responses to Dullstar's picks
2.1: Hm, I'm not enjoying this one a lot!
2.2: I think I've heard this song before! It's quite good.
2.3: I'm going for your second pick because it's shorter. :P There's not a lot to that one, is it? Maybe it's supposed to not distract you from the actual fight. ;)
Responses to kaywhyn's picks
2.1: I did not at all consider these two tracks while making my top 15 credits themes video, nor did I ever think of them for that later. It is just now that I realised that there are in fact staff roll themes. If I would have considered them, both of them would have made it in the top 15, probably! But maybe it's good they're not in, as they are so very different from all the others? I'm not sure. A lovely track! I used to have the top comment on that video, here it is:
2.2: Heyy, that's funny, that music and the art in the video greatly reminded me of a game I'd played as a kid. Turns out that game is Gizmos & Gadgets!! :P I didn't recognise the name because it has a completely different name in Dutch (translated to English: "Super Detective Race Spectacle"). Nice track indeed, good pick.
2.3: I am a big fan of Donald Duck etc, but I have never heard of Cold Shadow. :lem-shocked: Ah, after some research, it looks like the character was invented for the video game, and does not appear in any comics! That explains it. :) I actually like both themes! Both surprisingly grand for a game featuring Donald Duck. :P
Once again had not planned for how much time this would take. Quite fun, though!
(sorry for third post in a row; a lot of time passed between each, but nobody else has posted. I assume people have read my posts so I'd rather not edit any new content into a previous one as people might not see the new stuff)
3.1:
When I think of underrated music, I think of
Spoiler
Mario Kart Super Circuit. The problem with this soundtrack is that the audio samples were very harshly compressed, so the game would fit on a 4 MB cartridge. Why did they try to fit a Mario Kart game on a 4 MB cartridge? I have no idea! Anyway, because of this, the tracks sound quite muffled. However, the actual compositions are amazing! I think the only Mario Kart game soundtrack I would rate higher is Mario Kart Wii. But in rankings, most people rank Super Circuit near the bottom! D: I hate that. :P Here's one of my favourite themes from the soundtrack, Sky Garden (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1poky7byVuRnyqoEzB0_5ZqHV1Oc4VKYy/view?usp=sharing). :)
3.2:
Ha! That's a fun one! I hope people explain their picks here. ;) Hm, let me think...
Spoiler
Okay, I thought of an annoying GBC game, but it doesn't have real music... :P And I can't find a rip of it either. I am rarely frustrated in games anymore, maybe? :P And the games I'm thinking of are mostly games that were bad, and as such I haven't played them enough to remember the music...
Nope, sorry, I can't think of one! And there might not be one. Whenever I've been frustrated in a game it was either a game I haven't played well enough to associate with the music at all, or a game I've listened to the music to often enough to not associate it with frustration anymore, maybe.
Edit: Oh! I just realised that I have only pondered about frustrating events in games, where I might have made an association with the music. But I can think of two instances where something about the music itself was frustrating! Here's the one I hate most. See, my favourite game of all time is Yoshi's Woolly World. Tomoya Tomita composed for it this great opening theme (https://youtu.be/p0cgCVsq5oA). Please listen to it! (it loops at 1:30) After listening to that amazing track, then watch the first minute of this video (https://youtu.be/ffgphmen9kQ) to see how the game actually opens.
Spoiler
How did they mess that up so badly?!? First it plays for 20 seconds, then it fades out, then it restarts and plays again for 7 seconds, then it fades out again and there's 13 seconds of silence! Why?? :forehead: They could've let the tune play for 40 seconds!
Yeaahh... that's frustrating, isn't it? :P The only place to hear the tune in full is in an in-game music player. Fortunately they put that in!
3.3:
Another association one. :P Let me see...
Spoiler
The second problem I had on 3.2, I have here too: most tracks that I like a lot (and tracks you like have a greater chance to become nostalgic, I think), I have listened a lot to later in my life, and as such they don't evoke nostalgia anymore. The biggest example of this is SimCity 3000. When I first listened to the soundtrack on YouTube, I got very nostalgic, but I've now listened to it dozens of times, and it's not nostalgic at all anymore. Actually, I found one that does it!! I'm glad I thought of it. :) The first game I owned was Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. The best remake I've ever played. It really is 'Deluxe', unless New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. :eyeroll: I have the soundtrack on my phone, but haven't listened to it a whole lot yet, so some of the tracks still hold some nostalgic feeling. :) Here's one (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OK76DFWPa23C2ae1pDWNGStoIZkHMjpA/view?usp=sharing).
That is completely unacceptable 607 you posted three times in a row, Namida will not be happy, only kidding I've put my second and third round ones in here, hope that's okay. Everyone has picked some good music. Now we know what games we like and what games we hate. Good questions there Nessy.
Spoiler
Second Round!
1) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game (I like my tomb raider, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKEmoDvPqvc, I think they play that at the end credits or the end in general, it's sort of the main song of game as well)
2) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked (Maybe the guitar hero games, well this one is the third one I think, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHRfbiwdheg)
3) Favorite final boss battle music (Parasal stars for the atari st, even though it is the same tune they play I really like that tune it sounds so cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYW5kdJc8iU)
Third Round! Until August 5 at 18:00 UTC
1) Music that seems to be underrated in your opinion (basically music you like that may not be liked as much by others) (The spy vs spy 3 atari st. I thought the music was good, it brings a nostalgic feeling and I like that sort of thing. Even though it is the same music playing throughout, I still like that)
2) Music you associate with frustration (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPBfpmHh41g, by the way a great game, I might recommend this game to Mobius if he sees this comment, a great game and brilliant music).
3) Music that makes you feel nostalgic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CezOHqlXAFY, I love duke3d and have played this game to death, I made a map, maybe not the best map in the world but I like old duke maps to be honest)
I thought of something for 3.2! I will edit it in.
For round 3:
Responses to IchoTolot's picks
3.1: That's lovely! Why do people not like it? I couldn't tell from the comments because almost all I see are jokes about COVID-19. :P
3.2: Oh man, that's heartbreaking, it sounded like you were going to cry. :P Yeah, this is the kind of thing I was thinking of when I saw the prompt! Nice track, too.
3.3: Did you intend to link to the remastered version? If so, that's interesting!
Responses to LanaAndCo's picks
3.1: After looking up the definition of 'underrated', I can say that Puggsy might indeed be underrated! I rarely hear of that game, but when I do hear about it people seem to talk about it pretty fondly. Still, I'm surprised I don't hear about it more often. I never hear of Matt Furnish either! Great track, though.
3.2: Hey, that's funny hearing the Mega Drive version! I listen to tracks from Ecco - Songs of Time now and then, but that sounds very different. It's also funny that you can't really recall why it frustrates you. xD I can imagine a young player being completely stuck in a maze-like level though, and feeling jeered at by the music!
3.3: Haha, what a nice anecdote that the end screen wished you a good night! Yeah, this sounds like the theme that can very easily become nostalgic. :) Cheerful yet sentimental!
My Third Round
1) Music that seems to be underrated in your opinion
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Stone Tower/Stone Tower Temple (https://youtu.be/wz_NK5HgR6Q)
This was a lot tougher to find a music track for than I thought since most of the stuff I like everyone else likes as well, so I thought long and hard about it and I think I have an answer that requires some backstory first (I don't know if any of this is 100% true so I apologize beforehand). Majora's Mask was often viewed as a "black sheep" in the Zelda series when it first came out due to its recycled assets from Ocarina of Time and its surreal weirdness and it didn't find as much success as Ocarina of Time did. I did notice, however, that more and more people are started to appreciate the game a lot more now-a-days than back then when it was released... myself included. This one music I choose from this game is one that a lot of people don't really talk about as much as other music tracks. It plays during the final main dungeon and has a somewhat upbeat, positive sounding sound despite the fact that the dungeon takes place at the center of so much death and gloom. It's not the most epic video game tune ever, but I've always loved it ever since I heard it for the first time.
2) Music you associate with frustration
Mega Man 4 Voyage - Skull Man (https://youtu.be/m38qKR9WlMQ)
I think I'm going to do something a little bit different with this one and choose a fangame for this one. It's a Mega Man fangame that is actually a ROM hack of the original Mega Man 4 game but with different graphics, music, and the same bosses but with different behavior. Don't get me wrong it is a functionally well made game but holy heck it was way too difficult for me. I think it might be more difficult than Mega Man Unlimited (another fangame) and that one is considered to be one of the harder fangames too! I feel bad ranting about it but there were just so many design decisions I didn't agree with like the Dive Man boss that ended up being a mashing fest against tiny missiles with tiny hitboxes that homed in on you and the wind-like physics gimmick of Dust Man's stage. However, I went with Skull Man's theme because it was the first robot master I went after when I played this for the first time so it's the main track I associate with the game... and the frustration
3) Music that makes you feel nostalgic
Super Mario Land - Overworld Theme (https://youtu.be/Gb33Qnbw520)
One of my very first Mario games. I was really young (don't remember my exact age) and my late grandfather bought me my very first Gameboy Color with Pokemon Blue and Super Mario Land (both games were actually for the original Gameboy). I had no idea how to play Pokemon back then so all my time went to playing Super Mario Land almost to death. Even if the game has aged slightly meh over the years, I have so many great memories with it. For example, I actually remember very clearly getting to the penultimate level of the game and asking my grandmother to play through it for me because it was too hard for me. I also remember feeling my heart beating so fast every time I defeated the final boss.

Spoiler
It's less that people dislike the track, but more that the standard soundtrack is ignored as often people just turn it off or use a custom one.
And yes for the last one I intended to link the remastered track as it still brings over the nostalgia while uping it to a new level as well.
Underrated
RCT Merry-Go-Round music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tpLgBprqLI). No, this isn't extended. Apparently, this was from a record of music being played by a specific automated organ, so that's probably why it's so long. It's definitely a good thing though it's so long, though, because it's quite likely the player will be hearing this music for long periods of time in game.
Frustration
This song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sG5YwPtetk) from Mario 64 was used in the last two major stages (Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride), and the whistling gets quite irritating after you've been listening to it for a while. I'd say this track is very overrrated. It's not awful, but it should have stayed on the slide stages and only the slide stages, and TTC and RR should have gotten something else, such as an additional song since the OST is kinda short.
Nostalgia
RCT Menu music. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT45kiI5FYw) I actually played RCT2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT45kiI5FYw) a lot more, but I like 1's music better because it's opener is a lot better. The second game's menu music gets good later in, though. Of course, now OpenRCT2 exists and it lets you use the original game's menu music if you have it installed.
3rd round:
Spoiler
1. Mortal Kombat II (Amiga) - BGM04 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZuqg88XcvI) - I had to ponder this one and dig around a bit in order to find OST from a non-obscure game (I understand that it wouldn't necessarily count as "underrated" if it's not well-known but liked by people who know about it)
2. Captain Claw - Level 14 (The Temple) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLCrm5Nhulg), a tough and punishing level...
3. Super Mario All-Stars (SNES) - Game Select (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr6ceX_ttFw) - nostalgic, very much so!
@IchoTolot
Spoiler
Oh yeah, Bigfoot is a no-brainer. I don't like the remastered version of it much, though.
Responses to Turrican's picks
3.1: That's quite nice!! I'm keeping it, my collection's a bit lacking in relaxing music. ;) (and no need for an unauthorised rip, as it's on Bandcamp!) (I see one downside of the track is that it ends abruptly, because it is intended to go straight into the next song)
3.2: When I read that it was one of the hardest bosses and hardest games ever, and saw that it had a Japanese title, I thought it might be a bullet hell game... yup! ;) Interesting track! Do you associate it with frustration because you've played it yourself and struggled a lot with it, or for another reason?
3.3: Saved that one too, the nice Turrican track I've heard so far! ;)
Responses to Colorful Arty's picks
3.1: Woohoo, Humongous Entertainment! I remember asking for their games for my birthday, but my family couldn't find any in stores... I know now that they were shut down when I was still a young kid. :( I'm not impressed much by this particular track, anyway. It's not bad, but it doesn't seem memorable to me either.
3.2: Unfair bosses are frustrating if they are hard, yes! I am reminded of another Disney game, Donald Duck Advance. :$ The game has quite a bit of potential, in my opinion, but it is very unpolished, and I remember that the final boss had some apparent glitches through which I died several times, in addition to very strange hitboxes. Nice track indeed, though, I assume that helps to motivate!
3.3: Hey, a multiplayer theme, that's a good one! I don't think I'd heard this track before, despite it being from a Nintendo game (and me being a big Nintendo fan ;)). It's cool, though! I can definitely hear that it was made by Grant Kirkhope. ;)
Responses to Nessy's picks
3.1: Hey, my like is on that video. :P But that doesn't say anything about whether I like the track or not. ;) I do, though! Indeed, Majora's Mask is not too popular. That is also due to the frequent crashes, I think! It got a remake on the 3DS, though, which is actually stable. But indeed this is not one of the more talked about tracks about the soundtrack, in fact when I saw the title and heard the first few notes it did not yet ring a bell, but now that I've heard it in full again I can say that I really like it!
3.2: Great track! But ouch, Mega Man is already criticised for it's unfairness, and you played a ROM hack that makes it even more unfair? Yeah, I can imagine that to be frustrating. :P
3.3: Oh man, I had not thought of that one. Perfect pick! I still have some nostalgia with it too, even though I've listened to it a lot. :) The interesting thing is that the first time I heard the music was in 2012, if I had to make a guess, when I was a teen already. However, besides that the music just has a nostalgic quality to it as is, and is part of in my opinion one of the most, if not the most 'Mario-like' soundtrack ever, it can also be explained by me having played quite a bit of Mario Starcatcher 2 as a kid, before I had any Mario games myself, which is a Flash game that uses a remix of the theme. :) The remix sounds quite different, but the melody is the same.
Responses to Dulstar's picks
3.1: Hey, that's interesting! I don't think they kept that for RCT2, I only recall short themes from that game. The main theme from RCT2 though, by Allister Brimble, is one of my favourite themes. I am afraid it won't fit any prompts, though. :P It is cool that they recorded so much of it, indeed... but how did it fit on the disc? :o
3.2: Aah, I totally see what you mean! I've played Super Mario 64, and yeah, this song fits the sliders best. It is fairly long though, while the slider stages are fairly short, so maybe that's why the developers thought it might as well be used on other levels. But yeah, it can get annoying, especially on Rainbow Ride where you might be playing for 10 minutes only to fall off... and while you're falling off towards the death plane, the music is still playing cheerily... xD And it honestly doesn't fit Tick-Tock Clock too well, thematically! Looking at the comment section of the video you linked, very very many people interpret the song ironically. :P
3.3: Oh, you actually mentioned RCT2's theme! I didn't think I'd listened to RCT1's theme, but I have my like on the top comment so I must have. ??? I do like RCT2's theme a whole lot more though, especially the opening! But maybe I haven't listened to RCT1's theme enough. ;)
Responses to SQron's picks
3.1:
Quote(I understand that it wouldn't necessarily count as "underrated" if it's not well-known but liked by people who know about it)
Agreed! This is probably a good pick, as I do not find it even worth my time listening to it, to be honest. :P (by which I mean to say that if you do like it, you could indeed easily find it underrated)
3.2: I've never heard of that game! Using Google Translate I see that the other commenter found it very difficult too. :P Again the track doesn't really interest me, although it's got some parts I like. I'm not going to listen through 4+ minutes of it, though, even though it looks like it is that long!
3.3: Heh, cute theme. :) I've never played the game, but I can imagine it being nostalgic, as you'd have heard it a lot if you had it (playing all the different games), and because it's short it's easy to remember. I also suppose that this is not a soundtrack you'd listen to later in your life on other occasions, so the nostalgic value would hold.
Edit: Whoops, I forgot grams' picks. I'll have to do that later, I'm going to bed now. :P
Man, I've gotten so far behind on giving feedback. Because my round 1 feedback took so long, I'll try to be more concise from now on. Here's my round 2 feedback:
Responses to IchoTolot's choices
Rocking choices. I love the choir in your second choice. The third song is a very fitting boss theme, especially when said boss is a demon.
Responses to Lana's choices
I love the Kirby one. I've never played Superstar before, but I love how it has such a gentle beginning before becoming a medley of the other tracks in the game. Never heard of the second one, but it's a nice song. That final one if a really great Sega-sounding song! It definitely sounds like something you'd hear in Mean Bean Machine.
Respones to DireKrow's choices
Never played Ori and the Blind Forest, but I've heard great things. That is one truly beautiful song! The second song has an eerie feel, which I love; I'm a sucker for slightly creepy songs that still sound good. Megalovania is a classic as well. I think it's definitely overrated and overplayed (I also think the Homestuck version is almost as good), but it's still an epic and powerful song. Personally, I like Hopes and Dreams/Save the World more though ;P )
Responses to Turrican's choices
I'm seeing a lot of Turrican music from people for this challenge. ;) This is a nice ending song for sure. I've never played Grand Turismo, but the music is nice and peaceful. It reminds me of music from another game, but I can't put my finger on which one... As for the last song, I've never heard of this game before, but it's an awesome song! Not what I'd expect from a final boss song, but that doesn't mean it's bad!
Responses to Proxima's choices
Nice choice for the first one. I've never heard of this game, but I like this song, especially once the lyrics kicked in. I agree with you on Lemmings 2. I haven't played it, but from what I've seen, 90% of the skills seemed lame or redundant. Sports tribe is great music though. Donkey Kong Country is my jam! I love all of the final bosses, but the original game definitely had the most upbeat one, as if the song itself was cheering you on. I prefer the second game's darker final boss music, but both are great. :)
Responses to SQron's choices
More Turrican music, nice. I like this ending theme. I've never heard of 9 Lives before, but the initial theme is pretty bopping. I like the slightly sad feel to it. Pokemon is a series I could never get into. Not a huge fan of the music either. I'm sure it fits great with the game mechanics, but it's just not to my taste.
Responses to JRT's choices
Perfect Dark is one of the few classic N64 titles I have never played. I didn't know Grant Kirkhope did the music! He's a genius, and I definitely heard a little bit of Banjo Kazooie music/sounds in there. ;) Soccer Kid is a game I've never heard of. I did not expect it to have music that sounds like you're in a sewer though. :P
Responses to Nessy's choices
I also almost put the Mario 64 Staff roll for my choice, as it's so iconic. I figured someone else would though, so I chose something else. :P
Sticker Star gets a lot of hate. I really liked the sticker gimmick for the first world, but then I got tired of it. It had some good ideas, but it just wasn't executed well. At least the music is great. I've only played a little bit of the first Mario and Luigi, so I don't know the series, but I've heard the final boss music for Bowser's Inside story. It's incredible and makes you forget it's in a Mario game.
Responses to Dullstar's choices
I love me some Cave Story, but I prefer the Remastered soundtrack by a lot. :) I've never played Castlevania, but I adore the music from it! Chrono trigger is another game I've never played, but its boss music is kicking, I agree!
Responses to 607's choices
I forgot about Mario Kart Wii's credits theme. They're quite relaxing, aren't they? Is that Tom and Jerry track from the game that has infamously bad multiplayer where if one person dies, they swap characters with the other player? Regardless, the music is nice. Sephiroth's theme I knew would make onto the list, and for good reason: it's EPIC! XBOX JIM CARREY EAT A BEAR LEMON TEA SEPHIROTH!
Responses to kaywhyn's choices
I also debated putting Portal or Portal 2's credits song as my choice. Both are classic. That second song is jazzy and looks like an old edutainment game I used to play like Reader Rabbit. I remember my brother playing Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow. I love the first stage music a lot, but had never heard the boss theme before; it's very good.
Sorry for being late! Shame on me! :P
Fourth Round!
I want to do a bit of an experiment with this specific round: this time the prompts were suggested to me by Turrican on Discord, and this actually gave me an idea. If anyone participating in this game would like to suggest prompts to be featured in the next round please feel free to PM them to me on the forum or on Discord. That way we can keep this game a bit more fresh with different ideas from different people :)
1) Music with an uplifting beat and sound
2) Music that is more atmospheric sounding
3) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it
Round will end on August 15 at 14:00 UTC
Fourth round for me:
Spoiler
1. Mr. Nutz Hoppin' Mad - Nature (Amiga) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=125ZpXAeDd8) - "It's the most peppy thing I've heard in my life" - MechaNeko (source (http://superadventuresingaming.blogspot.com/2015/12/mr-nutz-hoppin-mad-amiga.html)).
2. Donkey Kong Country 2 - Lava Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwBI4EWCwwk)
3. Tiberian Sun - What Lurks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbo9gqZEGUU) - incredibly haunting. A listen recommended for head-/ earphones.
here comes a new challengerSpoiler
Uplifting sound: Live a Live - "Nice Weather Ain't it!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGZv1o-OsT4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGZv1o-OsT4)
Atmospheric: Fez - "Forgotten" youtube.com/watch?v=ZMsuwrc7HEk
Dark/gloomy: Spear of Destiny - "The Tower" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17DTf6N3urQ
My 4th round:
Spoiler
1) Music with an uplifting beat and sound
Hearts of Iron IV - We Are Soldiers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAaAd7zTSG4
A very upbeat song to play during a world war, but it is especially great if you are currently winning. ;)
2) Music that is more atmospheric sounding
Chris Christodoulou - The Rain Previously Known as Purple | Risk of Rain 2: Early Access OST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew5UxawEKyo
It takes the core theme from one of the best tracks from Risk of Rain 1 (chanson d'automne) and makes even better. The non-atmospheric boss tune from this stage is also extremely great.
3) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it
Command&Conquer Tiberian Sun Soundtrack - Valves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-H4hwmM1qk
Dark, sinister and just perfectly fitting for the tiberium ravaged battlefields of the future.
Eh it's fine, I had enough other things to do. ;) But this evening I did feel like playing this game particularly much, so I'm glad to see a new round has started!
Let's see... exciting!
These three prompts are all very similar, I guess they were made to fit a theme. :)
4.1:
For the first one there's one game my mind goes to right away.
Spoiler
Yoshi's Woolly World is one of my favourite soundtracks and my favourite video game (it was the former long before it was the latter). And it features a lot of cheery tracks! The first one I thought of is this one (https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/yoshi-s-woolly-world-ost/1-07%2520Clawdaddy%2520Beach.mp3). :) Quite uplifting, right?
4.2: More atmospheric than what? :P Than the tune I picked for 4.1? That's be very easy. ;P
Spoiler
I thought of the Metroid series at first. However, I don't know that well, and tracks from it would probably fit the next prompt a lot better. Atmospheric however does not have to mean dark and gloomy! I thought of another. :) This is probably the most atmospheric track I know: Space Junk Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy (https://youtu.be/EuYNxzSFRk8). :)
I am curious what kinds of tracks others will have picked here, as there are very many atmospheres that could be evoked, and yet many people might have gone for a similar one. We'll see! (the Wiktionary definition:
Evoking a particular emotional or aesthetic quality.)
4.3:
Very dark and gloomy, huh? ;) Well, let me think... Actually, let me look up what 'gloomy' means first :P (yes, I looked up definitions for 'uplifting', 'atmospheric' and 'gloomy') Yes, I thought of one!
Spoiler
Here is a beautiful track, that you won't hear very often. It is Requiem from Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (https://youtu.be/7KFY3j-dRys) (and some later games in the series too). You will hear this track only when one of your animals has died, which should be quite rare. It sounds quite bleak, doesn't it? It is very beautiful, though!
Uplifting/Cheerful
Jazz Jackrabbit OST: Diamondus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT8WzAczA1k)
Atmospheric
Celeste OST: Golden (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr-SWzqNpM0)
Dark/Gloomy
Twilight Princess OST: Midna's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXEnAuzjgKU)
Oh, so the rules are changing. I'm actually wondering if the descriptions are all going to be different from the original list from there, since I've already done the challenge before and, so far, I was just reposting my old answers. Anyway, since those are new descriptions, I'm no longer under my "use only one franchise" rule anymore and my choices are going to be more within my favourites musics of the moment and
maybe be less varied. But enough talk, here's my answers :
Uplifting music
Bomberman DS - Multiplayer Battle (https://vgmdownloads.com/soundtracks/bomberman-ds/rtglowph/Multiplayer%20Battle%20%28BDS%29.mp3)
Aw yeah, Bonbaaman~! And an other DS game too. But this one wasn't mine, it was my cousin's. If we played Mario Kart and Mario Party DS most of the time during family reunions, sometime we would rather do Bomberman matches. I still remember, jumping like crazy on the beds in our room at our grandparents' and getting upset because I sucked at the game (and it was why I didn't like Bomberman very much when I was smol :forehead:). Ahhh... I miss those times. I wish we could play again someday but alas, we're not children anymore... Aside from nostalgia, I chose this theme because it's (still) getting me hyper excited when I hear it.
Atmospheric music
Lode Runner The Legend Returns - Main Menu (https://vgmdownloads.com/soundtracks/lode-runner-the-legend-returns-redbook/upwhpexh/02%20main%20menu.mp3)
And another game from my childhood, again. :P When I think of atmospheric music, I generally think of Inca/foreign sounding track, maybe because a lot of my old games have levels that have that ambience, like this one, and I love it. It just makes me want to go on an adventure! Some of the musics from Rayman 2 and Myst could have been a good choice too...
Swapped my choices between "dark and gloomy music" and "creepy and scary music" because I didn't know their meanings were different. I can thank Nessy for allowing me to do that!Dark and gloomy music
Pikmin 2 - Submerged Castle (https://vgmdownloads.com/soundtracks/pikmin-2/xkmfzywq/339%20Submerged%20Castle%20%28Olimar%20_%20Louie%20_%20President%20Shacho%29%20.mp3)
Isn't Pikmin Nintendo's Lemmings when you think about it? Anyway, can we talk about how unsettling this track is? It's all broken and the hummings certainly doesn't help. This theme plays when you're in the Submerged Castle, an underground flooded dungeon that can be tricky to beat, especially if you are claustrophobic. But that's not the worst, oh no... those who played Pikmin 2 know what I'm talking about and I won't spoil it for those who want to discover the game. There's also two other musics I want to bring to the table. Why? Because of how eerily similar these three are. They got the same glitchy feeling and emptiness. The other two come from their respective last world before their final boss, who are also both nightmare fuel...
EarthBound - The Place (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-snes-spc/earthbound/126%20The%20Place.mp3)
Kirby Power Paintbrush - The World of Drawcia (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-ds-2sf/kirby-canvas-curse/25%20The%20World%20of%20Drawcia.mp3)
Man, Nintendo sure is good at making people uneasy.
Fourth roundSpoiler
1) Music with an uplifting beat and sound
Cherry Blossom Color Season from Katamari Damacy. If you've never played Katamari, it's hard to describe, but the colors are weird, the music is cool, and it makes you feel happy. This song is one of the most pure-joy songs I've ever heard before. It's so calming and peaceful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-1JHvQbspM
...which is good, because it plays on one of the most infuriating levels in the game, where you have to roll up the largest cow you can, with stupid things like milk cartons counting as cows.
2) Music that is more atmospheric sounding
Metroid Prime is full of amazing atmospheric music, to the point I was listening to it and my mom (who doesn't play video games at all) didn't realize it was a track from a video game. My sister loves playing this song in the car; it's such a nice peaceful song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbbUv1hz6mE
3) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it
This one was tricky, since most of the songs I thought of were dark and scary, rather than dark and gloomy. I decided on an obscure one, a track from an old point-and-click adventure game: Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise, a favorite from my childhood. Despite the extremely light-hearted nature of the game, quite a few of the tracks are rather ominous, such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BruS0xS4H00
grams' round 2 and 3!
Responses to grams88's picks
2.1: Um... that seems to be the entire soundtrack. I don't know what I'm supposed to listen to. :P I listened to the first theme, and it is nice! It sounds very familiar, I guess I've heard it before.
2.2: Ah, you don't like Guitar Hero? I wonder why? It seems pretty cool to me. I think you made a mistake, though, it doesn't seem like Through the Fire and Flames is actually a video game song!
2.3: That's pretty cool! It is quite happy for a final boss theme. Here you go (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vzZC4DkXjg3kOV829FmRAqk9hONREuig/view?usp=sharing), I recorded the Atari ST version. :)
3.1: I was unable to find this music! atarimania.com says the composer is unknown, that's why.
3.2: Why do you associate that with frustration? It sounds quite calm!
3.3: I've heard about Duke Nukem 3D on various occasions, but the theme does not sound familiar! It's cool, though. :) Not as hard as I'd have imagined, but I really don't mind that. :P
Okay, it's very late for me but I just unexpectedly had a 90-minute long conversation with a housemate, and I want to recover from it. :P (it was great, but intense conversation does overstimulate me)
So I'll listen to some round 4 picks. :)
But first a response to Colorful Arty:
Quote from: Colorful Arty on August 05, 2020, 03:01:46 PM
Because my round 1 feedback took so long, I'll try to be more concise from now on.
That's interesting. For me, writing comments probably costs negligibly little time, as I do it while listening to the music. ;)
Responses to SQron188's picks
4.1: Yeah, that's pretty uplifting! Sounds nice.
4.2: That is Hot-Head Bop, I think! Donkey Kong Country is a great choice for atmospheric soundtracks in general. DKC 2 is my favourite, though (and my favourite SNES soundtrack), and this is a great track! It's interesting that you picked this over Stickerbush Symphony! That is probably the most famous track from the soundtrack, and very atmospheric as well. Forest Interlude is much more popular than Hot-Head Bop too. :) But it's cool to see one of the less-played themes get some appreciation, and it certainly is atmospheric!
4.3: Reading the comments about use of headphones, I was expecting obnoxious use of stereo... but that's actually not going on at all! The use of stereo is great, and mostly much more subtle than I was anticipating. This one's also quite atmospheric. ;) But also quite dark! Not sure about gloomy, but I feel like dark and gloomy is an unusual combination anyway. This is quite a long one, but it keeps giving new things to hear, so I'll listen to the end. :)
Responses to rtw's picks
4.1: Hahaha, big smile!! I will be surprised if I come across any that are more uplifting than this one. :P Oh, and it's from Yoko Shimomura, I see! I like more of her work. This one's going into my collection, I think. :)
4.2: Hey, the atmosphere in this reminds me of the track Toad by Andrew Huang (https://youtu.be/vBDdSiA62Og). Or maybe a different track from that album, or just the entire album. :P I like it. Extremely little of the atmosphere actually gets filled in, but rather than shallow that actually makes it feel very wide. I see it is impossible to buy separate tracks from this album, but I'll have a listen to the rest of it later to see whether I'll want the entire album, as it's quite cheap. Edit: Wait! Forgotten is free. :P I'll go for that, then, as much of the album seems a bit too minimal for me.
4.3: Man, I like your taste! I love this one too. :P It fits the prompt very well, too!!
Responses to Ichotolot's picks
4.1: I was not expecting to find such a slow song in this category! It totally fits, though. The beat is slow, but it is uplifting. And the melodies and chord progressions certainly are. Very nice one. Am I just in a mood where I love everything this evening or will this become another favourite of mine? :P I think it is the latter. :)
4.2: Interesting story about the track. I don't know Purple Rain though, so I probably won't recognise the influences from it. This is once more something I really like, though... I am a bit unsure about the atmosphere. It is certainly atmospheric, but it's neither like the Donkey Kong Country track, where a clear environment was painted, nor like the Fez track, which was very abstract and minimal.
4.3: Finally one that I don't love. ;P I do like it though, it's good.
Hey, I have a theory about why I'm coming across so much music I love now... Maybe I like uplifting music, atmospheric music and dark music. :P I guess we'll see when I go through the remaining picks. ;)
This was a pretty tough one for me, but here's what I have come up with!
My Fourth Round!
1) Music with an uplifting beat and sound
Five Nights At Freddy's 6: Pizzeria Simulator - 240 Bits Per Mile (https://youtu.be/XQ2Q56AVpDI)
I want to go with this one specific track because I know for a fact that no one's going to post anything like it :D This is a track that plays in a horror game that starts off as an innocent looking pizza restaurant tycoon kind of game only to quickly show a dark side not only during the office section (being stuck in a very small office space trying to make sure nothing "undesirable" crawls into it via air vents as you work), but also in the form of little Atari minigames that are a stable of the entire series that serves to hint at lore going on in the background. This track plays during one of those minigames that starts off as a racing game. It's very uplifting and fast paced and serves as a nice break from the rest of the game.
2) Music that is more atmospheric sounding
Secret Of Evermore - Hall of Collosia (https://youtu.be/IOcPHAMfaCE)
I've been following an LP of this game for a while now and while I must admit I wasn't sure about it at first... now I absolutely love it and really wish there was some way to play the game now. I noticed that the entire soundtrack seems to lean more towards being atmospheric and it works fairly well. The track I picked, for example, is one that plays in an ancient temple and listening to it you can just picture the atmosphere of an old, crumbling, and forgotten temple.
3) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Song of Healing (https://youtu.be/7G_aaak-tDE)
What? Another Majora's Mask song? :P It's kind of hard not to pick certain songs from a soundtrack that can manage to provoke many different feelings in you. Unlike my previous pick (Stone Tower Temple) this one is more well known and has a very sad, dark, and gloomy undertone to it even without the context of its use in the game. For anyone that wants context: it's a song you learn early on that heals troubled souls haunted by regrets and guilt and turns them into masks, making this gloomy sounding tune even more gloomy.
Time to play catch-up!
Third round
7) Music that seems to be underrated in your opinion
It was difficult to choose here. Like Nessy, I'll slightly cop out here and go with a track that just seems to get overlooked in the midst of so many other awesome tracks from the same game, but is one of my top favourites -- Tyran Castle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w4iOQcAyGQ) (Chrono Trigger).
8) Music you associate with frustration
This was a tough one. Sure, I've played difficult levels and gotten frustrated; but mostly, the feeling that really sticks in the mind on those levels is the satisfaction of finally beating them. So instead... Scattered and Lost (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0etenwnI1wo) (Celeste). By far the best track on this awesome OST, this plays on Chapter 3, where Madeline is going through Oshiro's hotel, and the hazards on the level are the embodiments of his negative emotions. (And yes, it is also a huge difficulty spike and was pretty frustrating on my first time through.)
9) Music that makes you feel nostalgic
Much easier: Aquatic Ruin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhHa7ph5GLg) (Sonic the Hedgehog 2). I never had a console when I was a child, but our cousins had a MegaDrive and a SNES. Of the games I got to know that way, Sonic 2 has always stood out as the one I really fell in love with, and this is the best level track from the game (and it counts as underrated too, especially since it's sandwiched between the much more popular Chemical Plant and Casino Night).
Fourth round
10) Music with an uplifting beat and sound
Positive Force (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tp3qiOKuEBM) (VVVVVV). I don't really need to say much more :P
11) Music that is more atmospheric sounding
Greenpath (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABXga9y0B3I) (Hollow Knight). "Atmospheric" can fit a variety of moods, but I take it to mean that the music should match the mood of the place or scene it belongs with. Greenpath is the second area of the game, and after the bleak Forgotten Crossroads, you emerge into a jungle of lush greenery -- still part of the forgotten kingdom of Hallownest, with a solemn air of desolation, but still alive with plants growing over the old ruins and insects flitting in and out of the bushes. A place to relax, feel refreshed, and go exploring, but with a haunting feeling that hidden danger might be around the next corner. And the track sums all of that up beautifully.
12) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it
Don't have anything for this one right now; I'll come back to it later.
Also, is it time to start the next round?
Fifth Round!
This time the round has been created by Colorful Arty:
1) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
2) A really creepy/scary track from a game (Note: unlike dark and gloomy the intention of this one is to actually make you feel fearful/scared)
3) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time
Round will end on August 22 at 18:00 UTC
Round 5Spoiler
1) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
Revolutionary from de Blob. de Blob is a really underrated game with a phenomenal soundtrack! This track really sounds like a song you'd hear an actual mariachi band play, and it is fantastic! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYLhKfnE-zc
2) A really creepy/scary track from a game (Note: unlike dark and gloomy the intention of this one is to actually make you feel fearful/scared)
Ghost of Rattman from Portal 2. Portal 2 is game that manages to be really creepy from atmosphere alone, and is probably one of the games that has unnerved me the most as a result. This track plays when you find the secret dens left behind by a mysterious psychotic man. Said dens tend to be really creepy, and often have scary drawings scrawled on the walls. This song is definitely the creepiest one I've heard in a video game. If the music alone wasn't scary enough, just wait until you get to the 1 minute mark... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g2cGQirOr4
Honorable mentions go to Shadow Temple from Ocarina of Time and Last Day from Majora's Mask.
3) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time
I was originally going to post a song from Ace Attorney, because I wanted to experience the song and the twist behind the song again, but I didn't want to risk anyone getting spoiled by it, so instead I'll put the Hyrule Castle Theme from Breath of the Wild down instead. I've always adored the Hyrule Castle theme, but the Breath of the Wild version puts all others to shame. BotW had kind of a lackluster soundtrack to me (I prefer in-your-face music to atmospheric music) but this song sent chills down my spine when I first heard it. After spending hours upon hours exploring the world, making my way here to finish everything only to be accompanied by this epic track from my childhood was just perfect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GA3H8Ws8b3Q
I'll try to catch up on my feedback for the previous rounds soon!

Spoiler
Yeah, it's difficult to pick something out DKC2 OST, all the tracks are some of the best ever VGM.
The beginning of "What Lurks" almost always gives me the chills.
Feedback to round 4 will come during the weekend most likely. :)
QuoteHey, look at my no. 3, Icho! haha
Seems like we had similar thoughts. ;P
My 5th round:
Spoiler
1) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
Mick Gordon (feat. Omega Sparx) - I'm Back (to Rise): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JapDyUwAu8
I did not play the game (Killer Instinct) here, but this can easily count as a boxing entrance music or similar if you don't know the music's background before.
2) A really creepy/scary track from a game (Note: unlike dark and gloomy the intention of this one is to actually make you feel fearful/scared)
I don't play horror games, so that very limits my choices here. As a result, I go with a track that's not meant to be scary, but can really give you the shivers when you are not prepared at a certain point in the game.
They are Billions - They Are Billions!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFbV-JPc6cI
You need to build up and defend a colony from giant zombie waves in this game and at a point near the end of the mission, suddenly this music+timer starts and the announcer just says (if no other sounds are overwriting him): "Oh my god! They are billions!!" Let's just say shit gets real here and you will be attacked from every angle with each weak point can mean a quick game over. The ticking sound in the track also does not help your nerves.
If you want to see what a final wave looks like I've made a series about this game. Example (11:20): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkrYDM1QdwQ&list=PLKR1N9oJTTlJuqR5C5Z332HqWaumLDch7&index=100
3) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time
I wish to forget nothing, I rather keep my experiences even if I can't hear things again for the first time.
But if I had to choose a trck it would be Frank Klepacki's Hell March 2 from Command&Conquer Red Alert 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENyxseq59YQ
It's just that perfect invasion soundtrack and together with the opening cinematic it's flawless.
Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
Castlevania SOTN: Dance of Gold (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8jkyKXYvTY)
A really creepy/scary track from a game
Yep, I'm putting two again, for two different types of scary: one more tense, and the other more frantic. One of them's under 20 seconds, though, and the other's less than two minutes, so it shouldn't be an issue, I don't think.
Tense-scary: Celeste OST - Anxiety (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMuQ11tVJnk)
Frantic-scary: I'm not spoiling this one by telling you what it is ahead of time. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yw5jkAHgME)
A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time
Celeste OST - Summit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDVM9KED46Q) and Celeste B Sides - Summit (No More Running Mix) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YLk0kJ3Naw) and, for the same reason: normally, I appreciate the songs more as I get to hear them more and more, but in these particular cases, coincidentally both Summit A and Summit B, I spent a bit too much time in level and a few too many deaths to these as background songs (just completing Summit B at all, and getting all the strawberries and the crystal heart in Summit A), so the songs have soured a bit from an association with frustration. Honorable mention to the slide music in Mario 64, which I submitted for the frustration prompt: the slides are short and it's fine there, but it never should have been a main level theme - it's not grating enough to immediately dislike, but it IS grating enough that it isn't pleasant on repeat. The examples from Celeste are a little less trivial - they're very well put together, and definitely okay for use on repeat for the most part. What the game really probably needs is some way of changing the theme drastically after you've been in the same area too long, for some added variety. It's also probably why the Merry Go Round music in RCT is so long - you'll be hearing it a lot, so there's literally 40+ minutes of unique music.
My Fifth Round!
1) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to itWorld Of Goo - Brave Adventurers (https://youtu.be/Dh_qhX6ni6Y)
World Of Goo was the very first indie game I have ever played and a game that introduced me to the world of indie games in general. For anyone unfamiliar with this game it's basically a physics-based puzzle game where you build towers and bridges made out of different types of cute little goo balls with different abilities and effects in order to guide the goo balls not used into pipes, and it all occurs under a sinister plot from a newly formed corporation on their seemly peaceful world. I can't recommend this game highly enough, and this track is one of the most memorable for me and it's hard to believe it's not only part of a video game but part of a video game basically made by two guys.
2) A really creepy/scary track from a gamePaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - Riddle Tower (https://youtu.be/LgSSQ76EqcA)
Note: You really only have to listen up to around the 1:25 mark to get the general idea.
This is one of my favorite video games of all time so I really can't resist having another answer related to this game :P Seriously though this track is extremely creepy not only on its own but it's also fairly creepy for a Mario game. I could go into more detail as to what makes this music track even more creepy but to prevent spoilers I'll put it into a spoiler tag:
Spoiler
You explore the final dungeon of the game only to suddenly come across this huge underground city looking area with the Riddle Tower in the middle. The fact that the existence of this tower is left completely unexplained in the game even though you are almost certain it has some strong connection with the lore of the Shadow Queen, makes this specific music track even more creepy and makes it really highlight the unknown factor.
3) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first timeMega Man 7 - Wily Stage 1 (https://youtu.be/24wtlVy81gQ)
I mentioned this track in Round 1 and I'm going to make it an official answer in this round for one main reason. When I played Mega Man 7 for the first time I was in a very sour place in my life and I don't remember much of the Wily stages only that they made me rage quit constantly which for me to even get angry at all in a video game now-a-days is rare. Unfortunately, because of this I was unable to fully grasp what an amazing tune this was when I arrived at this stage for the first time. I'll gladly forget about it and listen to it again for the first time, and actually I'll love to forget my first experience with the entire game and play it again blind because it is a very enjoyable game and I'll hate to have such a down moment in my life completely ruin it.
Round 5:
Spoiler
1. Silent Hill - Esperándote (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EffJHOuJIU) (I know it's the same game as #2 here but it's a very very different track)
2. Silent Hill - Dark Again (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKzvF1a18k4) (there are sooo many I could pick for this... I chose this one because this one appears relatively early in the game and thus doesn't give too much away)
3. Turrican 2 - The Final Challenge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7rhHkQm1q4) (this one was an astonishment to me: plays right after a level with a sparse/creepy soundtrack, is so full of energy that it gives an adrenaline kick, and the composition of it as well as the samples used are perfect in my view)
Music that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game
Heart of Darkness - End Credits (https://vgmdownloads.com/soundtracks/heart-of-darkness-original-soundtrack/kufbzdcc/11-end%20credits.mp3)
It does sounds like it was ripped from a film, hey? Well, that's not too far from the truth. Heart of Darkness was made to mimic kid films from the 80s/early 90s, like The Goonies (they do share some similarities too). Also, it was a famous film composer that did the soundtrack : Bruce Broughton, who wrote the music for The Rescuers Down Under. I think it's one of the first, if not THE first, video game in history to have its entire OST done by directly recording an orchestra. As for the game itself, it is a favourite of mine. It's not purely an interactive cartoon like Dragon's Lair or Space Ace (they all are a pain to get trough because of their difficulty tho), it's closer to Abe's Odyssey and Another World, which its creator, the great Éric Chahi, also worked on Heart of Darkness. If you're interested, I would recommend to watch it rather than play it, except if you're up to the challenge.
Swapped my choices between "dark and gloomy music" and "creepy and scary music" because I didn't know their meanings were different. I can thank Nessy for allowing me to do that!Creepy and scary music
Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards - Ripple Star Catacombs (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-64-usf/kirby-64-the-crystal-shards/029c%20Ripple%20Star%20Catacombs.mp3)
Uhhh... Why is that sort of... "music", if you can call that music, in a cheerful and cute game like Kirby? I know that sometime, the series likes to be dark and frightening, but uh... I would have NEVER expected a track like this one playing in the game. In fact, I was really shocked the first time I heard it. Just look at Kirby himself when you make him listen to it in the sound test! :D
Music I wish I could forget so I could hear it again for the first time
Resident Evil Director's Cut DualShock - Mansion Basement (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJYvCHm3Ov4)
Now hear me out, I'm serious when I'm putting this thing in here. The first time I heard it, I honestly thought that was from a parody... but no! It really did come from a real and official Resident Evil game! While I didn't play any game of the franchise, I sometime wish I could forget this abomination of a song just so I can hear it for the first time in-game. Seriously, it's sooo amusing! I also know about the "composer" behind this atrocity, and I imagine how Capcom must be embarrassed now that the truth came out. The worst part is that they just needed to change the instrument for it to be actually scary : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oByTUQjCFg.
@Turrican:
Spoiler
1 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvmJZVtD1Rg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvmJZVtD1Rg) - I knew I'd heard that somewhere already! Nice choice!
Here's a playlist of Tekken 3 moveset videos; these use music tracks that may be to your liking as well!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebybPbdXdZ4&list=PL0A9C60F2B123563B&index=5 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebybPbdXdZ4&list=PL0A9C60F2B123563B&index=5)
@LanaAndCo yes no problem you can change your previous choices! Just make sure you put some type of note outside the spoiler tag just to inform people that there has been a change so that they can go listen/comment on the newly changed track :)
By the way I will post the new round tomorrow.
I didn't play for a while because SGDQ2020 was on... I'll now do round 5 myself before I continue replying to people's picks from round 4. :)
5.1:
Spoiler
Well, that's easily the same game I shared a theme from last time. :P Super Mario Galaxy was done by a full orchestra and would probably be mistaken for film score by most people who don't know the music. Here is the credits theme, for which this happens most easily because it has a beginning and ending, instead of looping. https://youtu.be/lBrwceBdDQQ There are probably elements in here that make it Mario-like, but an actual Mario film should have those too. ;) An honourable mention is Nobuo Uematsu; I wonder how many people will have posted a track of his, considering that they actually appear in mainstream piano books (as I think I've said before in this topic).
5.2: Since when are you into creepy or scary, Arty? ;P Hm... I'm thinking of one for a film, but that doesn't work. :P Hm, I don't think I can think of one that's actually creepy or scary. Why would you want to compose that, anyway, unless you actually want to scare the player? :P
Spoiler
However, the Ghost Valley music from either Super Mario Kart or Mario Kart Super Circuit should work. Yeah, the latter is pretty creepy! It's from an amazing soundtrack, too. ;) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LvwF9lEzEpG8xCdKIhAmf1kO2FyKitY9/view?usp=sharing
5.3: Interesting one!
Spoiler
My thoughts go to credits themes once again, because they are usually very rewarding to hear for the first time. You've put a lot of effort into beating the game, and you get to hear a piece you've never heard before in return. Let's close out my top 3 credits themes. ;) https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FVZdyOGT7Jx1L2l4pu8-tfbhC2Xwwwrf/view?usp=sharing This is the end of Yoshi's Island. This is my second favourite game, and the entire game would be amazing to play anew without knowing what was coming. This fits the prompt not only because this is an amazing theme that is already very touching on your first listen, but because of the end... and if you play Mario games and haven't beaten Yoshi's Island yourself yet, I'd advise you not to listen to this! Please do hear it for the first time after beating the game! :)
Round 4:
Responses to Turrican's picks
4.1: Huh, that's very different than what I had expected! It is not at all cheery, but I suppose it is uplifting! I wonder if you had this in mind when you made up the prompts or if you had to think for it?
4.2: I have never heard of that game series. But, this is strange... this does not sound atmospheric to me! There are hints here and there, but I'm not even sure if I would call it more atmospheric than your pick for 4.1. :P I wonder what other people think of this.
4.3: That's too long to listen all of right now, first off. :P It sounds sinister! :lem-shocked: Dark too, I suppose. I don't like it, it's too sinister-sounding for me.
Responses to Dullstar's picks
4.1: Heeyy. :) Yeah, good pick! It is rather laid-back for an uplifting theme, but I think it works!
4.2: Ah yes, what I've heard from Celeste was quite atmospheric. I personally have not yet fallen in love with the music yet; I'm hoping to once play the game and hear it more (I don't think it's been released on cartridge yet, though). I've heard it praised a lot. Huh, it changes a lot at 3:15. :o
4.3: Oh, that's a great one for dark and gloomy! Some songs from Majora's Mask would work too, I bet. I think this one is really both dark and gloomy. :)
Responses to LanaAndCo's picks
4.1: That is hyper, haha! It's got uplifting qualities too, though! Multiplayer bomberman is fun. :)
4.2: I do not know this music! I do know Rayman 2's soundtrack though, and I've heard about Myst (one theme from its sequel, Riven, is used as atmospheric music in the only tv programme I watch). Yeah, this works. :) I am going to guess that this game is a 3D adventure game... And I was wrong! It is actually a 2D game. :)
4.3: I do wonder now what you did pick for creepy and scary, as this sounds creepy and scary. xD I do like it, and it has got gloom too, I think!
Responses to Colorful Arty's picks
4.1: Lol. :P Well, it does make me smile, at least. :P I do not agree with it being pure joy, though. I actually hear a lot of sadness in it! It is for sure peaceful and calming, but cheerful? I honestly don't think so!
4.2: I was expecting Metroid music! I don't think I've ever heard this one, but it's pretty much exactly what I had expected to hear a lot of when first reading the prompt. ;) It is cool to finally actually hear such a track. :P
4.3: Always nice to hear some Humongous Entertainment. ;) Yeah, that is gloomy!
Okay, I'm finally going to catch up on feedback, since I'm quite behind:
Round 3 FeedbackResponses to IchoTolot's choices
1) Awesome song. The song is fitting for 2020 I'd say. ;P I love the orchestral sound to it.
2) Oh man, that is an awesome song, but I can already picture how it would play on a super difficult mission. It's like the song itself is trying to fill you with despair.
3) Another rockin' song!
Responses to Lana's choices
1) Never played Pugsy, but I already love this song. I can definitely see it being nostalgic for me as well if I had played it as a kid.
2) Incredibly fitting that you put this track as your frustration track, because rtw used it for when he played "The Gravity Zero" in DoveLems, and it ended up being his least favorite level in the whole pack. I recognized it right away. ;)
3) A nice bopping song. Sounds like it would be a great song for a Lemmings level. :)
Responses to Turrican's choices
1) A very nice track. Grand Turismo I've noticed has some very peaceful music. I also caught a portion of the song that sounded identical to Last Day from Majora's Mask, which is one of the most depressing and frightening songs I've heard, so hats off to the composer for taking that stock sound and making it sound peaceful.
2) Rule of thumb: if you're going to make an incredibly difficult boss fight, it better have epic music people don't mind listening to over and over again. This definitely follows said rule.
3) More Turrican music! :) Never played the game, but everytime I hear a track from it, I enjoy it. This is no exception.
Responses to 607's choices
1) I remember Super Circuit! It was always my least favorite Mario Kart after the SNES one (which I didn't play until I was an adult). That said, it wasn't bad by any means, and indeed Sky Garden was always one of the best courses from it, along with Sunset Wilds (I love the Shy Guys that try to hijack your kart)
3) Dude, you just took me back in time to when I was a kid. I remember Mario Deluxe! That was the best way to play the original Super Mario Bros. imo.
Responses to grams88's choices
2) Very atmospheric. It sounds like I'm in an ancient temple in outer space. ;P
3) Man, when I think of nostalgic songs, rarely do rock songs come to mind. Maybe I didn't have as rocking of a childhood then. XD I likey very much.
Responses to Nessy's choices
1) Ah, Stone Tower Temple. Really creative dungeon, very weird music, and one of my least favorite Zelda dungeons. I really dislike that one lava room with the Deku fans and all of the Elegy of Emptiness statues you need to make. But the worst part is the Stray Fairies. Why do I have to flip the dungeon 18 times to get them all? I've always thought the music for this dungeon was really off. Stone Tower Temple is in the deepest part of Ikana, which is an incredibly dark and creepy land, and what music is in the dungeon? Happy Ocarina music. Not what I would have chosen; I would have made Ikana Castle the dungeon instead. That said, I love the flip the dungeon upside-down gimmick, I love how the music changes slightly to reflect the upside-down-ness of the dungeon, and Gomess is the best miniboss ever. :)
2) This is not the Skull Man I know. Really good music; I'm a sucker for good 8-bit tracks, and Mega Man always delivers on that.
3) Birabuto Kingdom! Proof that the original Game Boy could have great music (Plus Tetris)
Responses to Dullstar's choices
1) Dude, you awakened my childhood! I freaking adore Roller Coaster Tycoon, and the Merry Go Round music is sooo good! Holy cow, I never knew the music was a 42 minute loop! :lem-shocked: That explains why I never got tired of it. I always put a Merry Go Round in my parks just to hear the amazing music.
2) The two stars I never got in this game were Tick Tock Clock 100 coins and Wing Mario over the Rainbow. Both of those stars had this music playing on their respective levels. I share your sentiment of frustration.
3) Heck yeah, more RCT! I definitely prefer the original's menu music over the second one's.
Responses to SQron's choices
1) I've only played a Mortal Kombat game once, and I had no idea what to do. I like the track though.
2) I can tell this was made on the Windows soundfont by the instraments' sound. A nice gloomy song, and that game's cover looks interesting: A pirate cat!
3) Never played Mario All Stars, but it's a nice rendition of the Mario theme.
Responses to Proxima's choices
1) Never played Chrono Trigger myself, but this is a good theme. I especially love the intro.
2) Still haven't played Celeste either, but the music I've heard is all amazing. This is a good theme; I love the synth sound it has and the theromin used for that otherworldly sound.
3) Aquatic Ruin is a classic track! I love the Sonic 2 soundtrack, and this music is one of my favorites. Very nostalgic.
Round 4 feedbackResponses to SQron's choices
1) That video thumbnail scares me a bit. Mr. Nutz looks a bit creepy, but at least the music is a bop!
2) I love Hot Head Bop from DKC2. DKC2 has one of the best soundtracks, and the Lava theme is definitely... hot. When I played the GBA version growing up, I didn't think much of it, but the SNES version is catchier and more atmospheric.
3) Another atmospheric one. Very nice.
Responses to rtw's choices
1) This is a nice one! Also, the boxart looks very interesting. Never heard of this game before.
2) This sounds like a song that would play on a foggy day. Very smooth.
3) Dang, I love this song! Never heard of it or the game it's from before, but I adore that eerie 16-bit sound.
Responses to IchoTolot's choices
1) Oh man, that is a nice orchestral song! It sounds like something that would play when you're coming home victorious from a war.
2) Daaang, this one is slick! I love that bass line. It's one of those songs that's so easy to listen to and just flows so well.
3) Well, this definitely has a dark feel to it. Nice kicking bass.
Responses to Turrican's choices
1) Sounds similar to the Turrican music I've heard. Very good track, although I'm not sure if I would call it upbeat. ;)
2) Ooh, quite a magical song this one. Love the drums in the background.
3) Did not expect lyrics in this song, so that caught me off guard. This is definitely an eerie song.
Responses to 607's choices
1) Wooly World has some very happy music, indeed. The main theme has been forever ruined for me because it's used in Smash Ultimate for a spirit battle that I had to repeat a LOT of times. This song is really nice, though.
2) Space Junk Galaxy is one of my little sister's favorite tracks, and she can actually play it on piano, so I've heard it quite a bit. Considering it's a world based on trash, the music is gorgeous.
3) Holy cow, nothing like a tragic song such as this to make you feel like a real piece of trash for letting one of your animals die. I feel like this track would also work well as a break-the-girl's heart song.
Responses to Dullstar's choices
1) I can not hear any Jazz music without thinking of Simon anymore. :P Such a good soundtrack.
2) I need to play Celeste one of these days. I got it for Switch when it went on sale, but I haven't touched it. The soundtrack is amazing, and this song is gorgeous. I'm a sucker for repetitive, sad piano songs.
3) I forgot about this song. Twilight Princess has a lot of dark and twisted songs, but this one slipped my mind.
Responses to Lana's choices
1) That track is basically the definition of hectic multiplayer music and it is amazing.
2) Very nice. Sounds like you're exploring a long-lost temple.
3) Submerged Castle is a fun place. One of my favorite dungeons. The music unnerves a lot of people, but I never found it that bad. Then again, I also never found the Waterwraith to be scary either, so...
Responses to Nessy's choices
1) I freaking adore this song! FNAF has always had pretty awesome music (as shown by the title screen music for each game), but Sister Location is where the music really got kicked into high gear. This 8-bit retro track is so pumping. Just don't listen to it while driving, lest you go way too fast.
2) A nice 16-bit theme.
3) I've never found Song of Healing to be dark or gloomy, but rather very calming. It truly has a "healing" effect on me when I listen to it. It's also a bit sad (especially when it plays during a few of the cutscenes in the game).
Responses to Proxima's choices
1) I clicked the link and all of a sudden was faced with Akseli's avatar! XD This is a bopping song! I love these retro 8-bit songs that push the limits of what could be done back in the day!
2) One of these days I'll play Hollow Knight. Every track I've heard from it has been amazing, and this one is no exception. I love the strings.
Responses to Nessy's picks
4.1: Hm, not a fan of this one! Some parts are okay, but the whole sound of it seems unnecessarily dirty. Dirty can be good, but I don't think it fits the track. And I also don't think it fits an uplifting mood, so I personally would not consider this track uplifting. :P
4.2: Yeah, that's a good one! About the picturing of the environment: I hear several hints to an underwater scene. This track does not actually play underwater, does it?
Are you American? It seems like the NSTC version is indeed very expensive.
4.3: Hey, I mentioned Majora's Mask in my reply to Dullstar! Yeah, this is one that certainly works. :) I like the melancholy in it (I also picked quite a melancholy track)
Responses to Proxima's picks
3.1: Hey, Chrono Trigger is nice, because the soundtrack is on streaming platforms. ;) Indeed this one does not sound familiar to me... but I like where it's going! It's very varied, but still coherent. That's impressive! Not sure yet if it's one of my favourites, but I added it to my favourites on SST so I will listen to it again later. Indeed it is not popular, I can see there.
3.2: :o I love that one! (hadn't heard it before) It's hard to imagine associating this with frustration. :P Although, actually... I just got to the part starting at 1:57, and there is in fact some frustration there, I think! It seems to make me a bit angry at the world. Wow, what a progression in this track. :o It's long, but I have to finish it. :)
3.3: Ah, I know that one. Yeah, nice track! And it actually has a nostalgic sound to it. :D That makes it easy for it to make you feel nostalgic, I suppose. ;)
4.1: Oh, I forgot about that one! I don't need to say more either. :P I haven't actually bought the VVVVVV soundtrack yet... I should do that some time. ;)
4.2: I haven't listened to this soundtrack yet, although I've heard good about it. This sounds beautiful! Very atmospheric indeed. I love the flute.
4.3: Well, come back for it! ;)

Interesting, another one who does!

Considering it's a world based on trash, the music is gorgeous.
:P
PS: We reached 100 posts! ;)
@Colorful Arty
3.2 I'd recommend Claw to you. It's a platformer with beautiful, even mesmerising, 2D graphics (it is tough as nails, though!); the main character is voiced by Stephan Weyte (listen here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLpfN6w0UPE)) whose work was featured in several Humongous Entertainment games, and he did the famous voice of Caleb in Blood! The game itself can be downloaded here: https://captainclaw.net/en/downloads.html
4.1 You could say that! The actual game and Mr. Nutz are precious, though.
4.2 I think it'd be a challenge to find a weak track in the DKC2 OST!
Sixth Round!
This time the round has been created by 607:
1) Music with unusual sounds
2) Favorite music that plays in a cave or underground area
3) Music that is technologically impressive (for the system it's on)
Round will end on August 31 at 18:00 UTC
Round 6:
Spoiler
1. Silent Hill 2 - Promised Mutilation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y03Aa_B3gZ0) (probably most of the tracks made for Silent Hill 1-4 games would qualify here)
2. Heroes Of Might And Magic III - Underground Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku6f3l4XR8E) (think of fairy tales)
3. Turrican 2 - The Final Fight (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2RkPi5oPN8) (the soundtrack of this game was made in the TFMX Pro format which allows up 7 sound channels in a piece of tracker music, at a time when the standard was 4)
Round 6:
Spoiler
1) Music with unusual sounds
Command and Conquer Remastered OST - C&C Credits Outtakes Theme (Bonus Tracks): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2km1WedZcjc
In the original game it was planned to include a few outtakes from the video sequences - sadly the diskspace was too limited. For the remastered they dug up the audio track from these outtakes scenes though! This music track is the result and I think the screwed up voice lines are unusual enough. ;P
2) Favorite music that plays in a cave or underground area
Darkest Dungeon - The Cove Battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB22jMz5oNk&list=PLu-c4HJwSuIlyQ2YDgav7opgfFgFIeWnb&index=11
It's just such nicely haunted track fitting the overall athmosphere of the game. Darkest Dungeon (+ the DLCs) is definitly a title I am very proud to have beaten on the standard difficulty as the game is VERY unforgiving.
3) Music that is technologically impressive (for the system it's on)
Mick Gordon - DOOM 2016 soundtrack - BFG Division: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHRuTYtSbJQ
This track is just absolutely brutal and perfect and it was made through very impressive techniques. As a reference here is Mick Gordon's GDC talk on how he developed the soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4FNBMZsqrY
It's really worth watching! :)
Music with unusual sounds
Rayman - Deep Concentration (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/playstation-psf/rayman/SLUS-00005_39.mp3)
This is a very creative piece of music, really, using drawing noises to make a music track, that's clever! Too bad the level isn't as peaceful... Sigh, this why I think the first Rayman needed a repolishing. Everything was great except the level design. I don't define the game as just being hard, but also being unfair. You think you finally finished the darn level? NOPE, *magical sound and new obstacles appear* GO AROUND! I would like to also thank Rémi Gazel for the amazing work he did for Rayman, may he rest in peace...
Cave/underground music
Kirby Super Star - Trees in the Depths of the Earth (https://vgmsite.com/soundtracks/kirby-super-star/wssokorpth/34%20Trees%20in%20the%20Depths%20of%20the%20Earth.mp3)
You know, I was this close to chose Hazy Maze Cave from Mario 64, since this is what comes to my mind when you ask me to represent "cave music", but, it also plays in an another level that isn't underground and I prefer the Kirby music anyway. So yeah, The Great Cave Offensive... I love this sub-game, I just love adventure in general. The areas you go through aren't supposed to be things you see in caverns but this is what makes your mission so entertaining! You got a jungle, a crystal lake, a tall tower and a huge garden all of which are filled with treasures and enemies. See, this is what I call a good treasure hunting in an enormous cavern while you got trapped in it by your own stupidity! Also, why is the title of this track referring to "Earth"? Kirby's planet is named Popstar and is nothing like Earth. Maybe it's just a reference to Jule Verne? :P
Music that is technologically impressive (for the system it's on)
Gimmick! - Slow Illusion (https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-nes-nsf/gimmick/4%20-%20Slow%20Illusion.mp3)
Hey, this game isn't that obscure, a lot of people actually recognise Gimmick!, mainly for its OST too. Yeah, it had the advantage of being developed on the last years of the Famicom, when programming techniques were more mastered, but it's still a pretty impressive little game. But what about the music? Well first, I need to tell you about the audio capacities of the Famicom. It has 5 audio channels :
- The 1st and the 2nd are of the same kind, they are pulse wave channels, mainly used for the main melody.
- The 3rd is a triangle wave channel, mainly used for the bassline.
- The 4th is a noise channel, mainly used for percussion and sound effects, like a waterfall or an explosion.
- The 5th is a sample channel, for importing highly compressed instruments. While it was sometime used, mainly for percussion, the number of samples were kept at a bare minimum because it costed ROM space.
And that's where Sunsoft, the game's developer, come into account. Because most, if not all, of their games utilize the 5th channel as a bass, which was far from easy because of the limitation of the system. When done correctly, this can give the music a better sounding bassline than using the triangle wave channel. And it's not over, since a special chip was also added to the game's cartridge : the "SUNSOFT 5B". Not only does this chip extend the capabilities of the console but also comes with a YM2149 audio chip, providing three additional audio channels. Sadly, there was a problem... When the game was exported to Scandinavia (the only region who officially had the game beside Japan), the extra audio channels were removed, making the music a bit weird. Here's the PAL version for comparison : https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-nes-nsf/gimmick-eur/3%20-%20Track%203.mp3. Apparently, it has something to do with the NES only using its 5 audio channels. Oh, and if you're wondering why I didn't choose the more well known "Strange Memories Of Death" instead, it's simply because I don't want to put unused tracks in my answers, and because Slow Illusion is smoother to my ears. :D
Round 6Spoiler
1) Music with unusual sounds
Literally any track from Earthbound; the whole game uses a very unusual soundfont. That said, I have to go with the Hotel theme, which is one of my favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PB_ksRqtY8w
2) Favorite music that plays in a cave or underground area
So many great cave songs, that it was hard to pick one. In the end, I went with Webs Cavern from Frogger - He's Back! A hauntingly beautiful track from my childhood, played when you enter the deepest, darkest cavern in the game. Simply gorgeous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyjN1dT7rLM
3) Music that is technologically impressive (for the system it's on)
The entire MOTHER 3 soundtrack, but if I had to pick one track to really stand out, I'd say Etude for Ghosts. This song plays in a GBA game. That is all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nUKvT12gO4
Music with unusual sounds
Earthbound - Boris' Cocktail (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssoYgCXC6Bs) It's quite strange.
Favorite music that plays in a cave or underground area
Cave Story - Jenka 2 (Labyrinth) (Original) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8D_tsp3gzs) (Remastered version in Cave Story+) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6fI1UW28GM) Basically any area BGM in this game other than Moonsong (Outer Wall) and Balcony would technically qualify. But considering the boss at the end of the whole Labyrinth segment of the game, this is probably very deep within the island. Plus, it's a strong contender for my favorite song from this game.
I'm going to hold off on the last one for now. I need to think a bit more about what would qualify a piece as technologically impressive, I think. Knowing how something was done can make something that didn't seem technically impressive become technologically impressive, but it can also make something that seemed superficially technologically impressive suddenly become a lot less impressive.

Understandable! I did not consider that this prompt will be difficult to answer for people that do not know much about the technology behind video game music, as I do.
I will reflect more on my own prompts after going through all people's picks.
But first, let me make some myself. ;)
6.1: Hm... Okay, I'm thinking of three things right now. :P
Spoiler
Firstly, Donkey Kong Country, obviously. Secondly, some of my own music—but that doesn't count, as the music I'm thinking of has not appeared in a video game. Thirdly, a specific track from a Humongous Entertainment game. The latter is just weird, and frankly not one of my favourite pieces of music, so I'm leaning towards Donkey Kong Country. We've already had quite a bit from that game, though, is that bad? :P It's such a good soundtrack! ;) I'll first consider whether I don't know any obscure game with music with unusual sounds. Can't think of any! I hope there actually are, and other people will have been able to find something for this prompt... ;) Here is Mining Melancholy (https://drive.google.com/file/d/17nxcNbhYFk5l6-e3cswTTfcuqVK8sFCu/view?usp=sharing)! Possibly my favourite theme throughout all of Donkey Kong Country... but that would be hard to say without grading each one individually! Should fit the prompt well, though, the first 15 seconds are made up entirely out of unusual sounds. I love the dwarf humming at the end too!
6.2: Ah, this one I know!
Spoiler
Yoshi's Woolly World's soundtrack might've beaten Yoshi's Island's soundtrack for me, the latter's cave theme is still my favourite of all time, I think. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Nu91OzzP_fapN7aAHAKV8vJb01NcOuYH/view?usp=sharing I'm honestly not sure quite why I like it so much. :P It's very chill, I think I like that. :) And I'm happy that there is a Mario cave theme that is not a remix of Super Mario Bros.'. :P
6.3: So when I had thought of this prompt, I immediately thought of something I could use for it. However, after seeing
Spoiler
IchoTolot mention something about pc games in relation to this prompt, I thought of another that is much more dear to my heart! I wonder if someone else will mention the game I had in mind—I'm not counting on it, though. The music that is dear to my heart is the Bubble Dizzy PC speaker soundtrack (https://youtu.be/Z3uIvUJbpYg)! (I hope it's okay that there's two tracks in this video, it's less than 4 minutes together anyway :P) In case anyone doesn't know: pc's have a speaker built-in (not quite sure if all still do now, but they used to), which can be used to create music when the pc does not have a sound card. This speaker has a big limitation, though: it must have a fixed frequency at any given time. There is no possibility for mixing. This means that at any time, only one tone can play. And in most PC speaker tunes this is very noticeable! In this one, however, 3 voices seem to be playing simultaneously! :o How is that possible? Well, you can hear it if you listen closely and see it if you examine the tunes in Audacity: the different lines are simply alternated quickly, giving the illusion of 3 sounds playing at once. :)
The best thing is that the music itself is great too!
I'll start with people's fifth round picks now!
The prompts
1) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
2) A really creepy/scary track from a game (Note: unlike dark and gloomy the intention of this one is to actually make you feel fearful/scared)
3) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time
Responses to Turrican's picks
5.1: Well yeah, that makes a lot of sense! A lot of tracks from racing games would; Re-Volt's would work too. Not a fan of this track myself (nor do I like Re-Volt's soundtrack much).
5.2: Hm... it's a bit unsettling at some points, but it seems more weird than creepy or scary to me. :P At the beginning it was quite intense, but that dropped off quickly.
5.3: Hey, we had something from this game before, right? :) I'm curious why you would wish to forget this one! I don't hear anything remarkable about it, but I don't know the context it plays in.
Responses to Colorful Arty's picks
5.1: I see the top comment on YouTube thinks so too, but I do not think this game is overrated. :P I regret buying it, to be honest. It wasn't great anyway, but it not having a mid-stage save system while having very long stages makes it unplayable for me. Anyway, onto the music: Yeah, I agree, people could mistake this for a song from the real scene! I perhaps
would suspect it to be from a video game, but maybe that's because I've listened to video game music so much. :P It's very good!! Not a style I'm a fan of, but very well done. :) It's got a lot of movement too! I'm impressed.
5.2: I don't think I ever considered that Portal or Portal 2 might have music playing during the game! I only knew the ending songs. Hm... maybe I am not very susceptible to scary music. :P I just find the voices sound funny, like a person making fun of a hip hopper. Although I can definitely imagine it being scary in the context of the game!! It's certainly weirding me out at this point. :o Good pick.
5.3:
QuoteBotW had kind of a lackluster soundtrack to me (I prefer in-your-face music to atmospheric music)
Agreed! In your face isn't quite necessary, maybe, but I like a constant flow of music, instead of some droplets now and then. :P But yes, that is a great track! In what way is it a track from your childhood, though? Do you refer to the hints to the original The Legend of Zelda Overworld theme?
In any case, good pick, I would say!
Responses to IchoTolot's picks
5.1: Woah, I listened to close to a minute of it, but I really do not like this stuff, so that's it for me. :P Perfectly valid pick, though. I would not have guessed it was made for a video game.
5.2: Yeah, the clock ticking does make it creepy. :P I quite like this one. This one could also work for 5.1, probably. Maybe it could play in a modern superhero film. :P
5.3: Alright! I don't really have anything to say on this, other than that I like your point about wanting to keep your experiences. :P But couldn't I forget everything about the credits to Yoshi's Island while still remembering that I loved them? And then when I listen to it again, the memories will flow back... ;)
Responses to Dullstar's picks
5.1: Hey, nice one! That's the first classical style track for this prompt (or in the entire game, even?).
5.2: Hey, Celeste again! I'm curious for what will happen!
Huh. Not sure what's scary about that, but again, maybe scary just doesn't work for me. :P As for the other one: nice of you to not spoil it, I didn't even look at the video because I wanted to hear it first. ;) Nice one, but I'm still not scared. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I wasn't scared by my own pick either, but it was the best one I could think of. :P Are other people, then?
5.3: 20 more minutes of Celeste. :lem-mindblown: Alright, I'm not going to listen to all of that, I think. :P Your reasoning makes sense, although I think that maybe they are so super long to avoid the problem you mention?

Eh, eventually there was going to be one that I didn't have a good answer for. It happens. Although in my case it's kind of the opposite - I do know a lot about the technology, but I tend not to be all that impressed by it, possibly from observing from now and not as it was created? Probably each upgrade in the hardware would have been impressive at the time it was released, but now, it's not so impressive anymore unless it really breaks my notions of what the hardware is capable of. Somewhere out there, someone managed to get an NES to play this .mod file (albeit at a bit lower quality) (https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_player&query=35151) using a generally unused ability the system had to play PCM (DPCM, however, was commonly used), but I can't find the post again. There is, however, a reason that the functionality was generally unused: it took too much CPU. For that reason the only game I'm aware of that used it (Battletoads) only used it on the pause screen. Allegedly, this song on the SNES (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAPpVplHiDE) required some tricks to get working, but I can't really verify it due to not knowing enough about that particular system's exact capabilities (i.e. I know it uses sampled audio and has 8 channels, but I don't know any finer details than that about the limitations). It's a nice song, for sure, but it also doesn't seem that technologically impressive without knowledge of what they had to do to make it work. It's discussed as part of this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvIzIAgRWV0), but it has a number of inaccuracies overall, so I'm not really sure how credible the specific claims about the song are.
Reply to 607's reply to my pick for 5.3
Most of the songs in the game are actually fairly long, but Summit's a bit of an exception: the total runtime for all the variations comes out to about 10 minutes, but since the level consists partially of
Gameplay/story spoilers
revisiting old areas after you'd fallen in the previous level
it mostly changes out the instrumentation to match the areas which is a cool effect, but also doesn't really help much with the repetitiveness if you go slow (which I did while I was trying to 100% the level). The actual theme is probably around 1:30 to 2:00, as an estimate (I could check, but I didn't). Most other songs in the game build up as your progress through the level, which keeps things nice and fresh. On A-side, it wasn't an issue when I was just playing through the first time not caring about 100%. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Waiit, on the NES? :o I thought you were saying on the SNES! I was going to say that the Toy Story menu theme on Mega Drive (https://youtu.be/Unh2dAEHtZo) also plays a .mod. Just listened to the Battletoads NES pause screen music, though, and that is cool! That reminds me, I also have a GBC game that uses PCM samples. I think you can hardly call the music music though, as besides the title theme, it's only percussion, there's no melody. I can't actually find that soundtrack anywhere, though! You can see footage from the game here, though. https://youtu.be/_Qg5mi3wgSI I would call the soundtrack and the game itself technologically impressive, even though I dislike both. ;)
Continuing on with round 5:
Responses to Nessy's picks
5.1: Hm... not quite sure about that one. :P The 'boings' in it make me associate it with a video game. But I suppose it could also fit a western (thinking of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, which also has such strange sounds in it :P)
5.2: That is not a theme that seems familiar to me, nor do I remember the part of the game you mention. :P (I never played the game, but I did watch a 100% walkthrough of it, so I must've seen it ;)) I suppose it's pretty creepy, though!
5.3: Mega Man games making someone rage quit does not sound strange at all. :P Good reason for wanting to forget it, though! Being able to enjoy it without the sour associations. And it's a pretty fun track too!
Responses to SQron's picks
5.1: Was not expecting the singing! :o I guess it could be from some kind of opera spin-off?
5.2: Okay yeah, that one I actually found a bit unnerving! :o
5.3: Heh, this upload has quite large stereo separation (of course in the original track the stereo separation was 100%), which means I finally hear something come from the left again :P (my left ear is stuffed at the moment). Very cool track! It's nice to hear the Turrican soundtracks through this forum game... I'd heard quite a bit about them but never listened to them. :) Chris Hülsbeck is actually not one of my personal favourite composers, even though I do appreciate his greatness. :P I think I'll remember this track though, I quite like it!
Responses to LanaAndCo's picks
5.1: Yeah, that is definitely a film soundtrack. :P Compared to this, Super Mario Galaxy's credits theme totally sounds like a video game theme. ;P Very nice, though! Very interesting game too. I don't recall hearing about it before, but I read the Wikipedia page now. :) Perfect pick! I totally would not have suspected this to be from a video game if I heard it in a general soundtrack context. That must be a long staff roll, though. :o Or is part of it an ending cinematic too? I am listening to it in its entirety, it's that nice. :)
5.2: I like that! Reminds me of the dungeon tracks in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but this is more upbeat and a lot busier.
5.3: Huh. That's really interesting. I should go to bed now, but I want to read up on both this apparent mess-up, and this Japanese 'artist'.
Once again I've been slow, but then again, the game has also been slow in moving on :P
Incidentally... @Colorful Arty No response to my round 3 picks (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5006.msg84776#msg84776)?
Fourth round (continued)
12) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it
Norfair Ancient Ruins (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoHm2BZeWbQ) (Super Metroid). The whole game has a fantastically created gloomy atmosphere as you explore the ruins of a dead planet taken over by the Space Pirates -- but this is where both the game and the soundtrack reach their most intense.
Fifth round
13) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
Going to go with Mantis Lords (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbDkU65pJNQ) (Hollow Knight), even though I had a HK pick last round. Can't help it. This track has amazing orchestration and sounds like something you would hear in an operatic overture to create a mood of fast-paced tension and thrill. Which also makes it perfectly suited for the fight where it plays in-game.
14) A really creepy/scary track from a game
Fire Temple (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5blHw6C4Ax4) (Ocarina of Time). I know anything I say about this may be controversial, given that Nintendo (inadvertently) included a Muslim call to prayer in the track; but considering the sound alone, the way the chanting fades and swells is really well done and gives it an extremly creepy atmosphere -- like there are people or spirits in the distance somewhere, out of sight but you know that whichever way you go you have to be careful, then suddenly they are all around you....
15) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time
Going to pick the low-hanging fruit here (no pun intended). Stickerbush Symphony (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ir0d7bjMIk) (Donkey Kong Country 2) is so powerful that I wish I'd gotten to find out what it would have felt like, to hear it for the first time in-game without having any idea that this was coming. The first time I played DKC2 was when I was visiting a friend in Texas (the same occasion that I got to know Chrono Trigger, incidentally) and I only got as far as the second world.
Sixth round
16) Music with unusual sounds
Oops, I already played the Fire Temple card :P Let's go with Singing Mountain (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN85h3H0Sdk) (Chrono Trigger). Yes, there is an actual music track here, after you've listened to the wind for a minute 8-) and it's an unforgettable, gorgeous melody.
17) Favorite music that plays in a cave or underground area
I mean, that's only about half of all videogame tracks, including several of my previous choices! If I had to choose my favourite, though, it would be "Brood" (DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold), and that's not easy to find on YouTube. The best I can do is this Let's Play (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Q3HMIdg8Oo) -- "Brood" is playing from 6:11 to 10:32. (The top-down view doesn't make it very clear that we are underground, but this is the tenth level below ground of King Dugan's Dungeon.) (And yes, I am the second person speaking in the LP.)
18) Music that is technologically impressive (for the system it's on)
Eh, I'm not an expert on music technology so I have no idea whether this is accurate, but a piece that sounded impressive to me (again, for the system): Bubble Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JY3xFNcg_g) (Mega Man 2). I've heard that the MM2 soundtrack is well-liked, but I wasn't that impressed... except for this awesome track :D
Well, I'm naturally quite curious to see people's picks for round 6!
Responses to SQron's picks
6.1: That's pretty creepy! Would've worked for 5.2. :P Works for this one too though. In any case, this track doesn't sound too musical, to me. :P
6.2: That's pleasant! This must be a hugely vast cavity. The atmosphere is so wide and lush...!
6.3: Ah that's not fair, you're linking to a remastered version. :P I will listen to the Kuokka77 (non-Dolby) video. Huh, so far it sounds like something that could be possible with 4 channels. Let me actually download the mod so I can follow along. :P - Never mind, that's not possible! Sounds like Chris programmed his own music discipline, and it is not convertible to the regular formats. But yeah, I'm confused, as I'm only hearing 3 sounds at a time, not 6 or 7! Actually no, I just heard at least 4! It's not obvious to me, though. :P Although the track does sound quite lush, maybe, for example, the drum track uses two tracks? I'd doubt it... seems unheard of. :P Yeah, I'm not sure! If you know more about it feel free to clarify things a bit for me. ;) In any case it is a great track!!
Responses to Ichotolot's picks
6.1: Haha, that's amazing! Unusual sounds indeed. ;P Very humorous. Reminds me of the Cannon Fodder intro FMV (https://youtu.be/_LSTO7vpJg4). The track is quite catchy too! They did a good job on it.
6.2: Wow, like SQron's pick, this is very much unlike any underground music I've ever heard! It's great, though. And hear I can definitely imagine it creating a fitting atmosphere. :) It gave me an association of a passage in either Narnia or LotR, where they're underground. I quite like this track! I bought it. :)
6.3: I assume this pick is not about the system it is on but about the way it was made? I'd say that's fine, as a lot of recent video game music is simply an audio stream, and I suppose it would be a bit unfortunate if none of that could be included. However, for the birth year prompt the restriction was a lot tighter than that. ;) But yeah, this does sound very impressive! I don't think I'm going to watch the video, but I got some stuff out of the comments out of this video, and also just out of how it sounds. ;)
Responses to LanaAndCo's picks
6.1: Aah, great pick! I had forgotten about this track. This is exactly the kind of track I had in mind when making the prompt. :) ... I was going to comment more, but then I saw the grey part... Rémi Gazel died?? (after some reading up) *sigh* That makes me sad. I had missed that news. I am subscribed to his YouTube channel, and was expecting new projects from him in the future. But yeah... this track, and the entire Rayman soundtrack, is amazing.
6.2: Is there not earth on Popstar, though? There's grass, it seems like...! :P The music sounds a lot more volcano-like than cave-like to me.
6.3: Waait, there's no square on the Famicom or NES? I had never heard of this game, I think! It's great, though! Yeah, a sample-based bass on NES is something I've never heard before. :o Sounds great!
I was trying to compare the two versions you linked to hear what channels were missing, but it seems like the second one wasn't recorded in the same way, as it sounds really muddy.
I do love the YM2149! It's unfortunate that grams isn't playing anymore... :( Most Atari ST music isn't on YouTube, though.
Responses to Turrican's picks
6.1: Ah, I see, atmospheric sounds! They are interesting!
6.2: Skyrim! I don't think we've seen that yet in the game. That's quite minimal! I expect that it works great in the game, but for listening to on itself it doesn't give me enough to pay attention to.
6.3: Huh yeah, that does sound technologically impressive! I guess that's Hülsbeck using his own procedures again. :) I really wonder how this one works! Especially the part starting at 0:04... it just doesn't sound sample-based at all! ???

You learn something new every day; I had no idea that the Famicom had a sample channel.
Sound generation in gaming systems is a fascinating subject in itself... you've inspired me to do some research into it!
Responses to Colorful Arty's picks
6.1: I thought you might have something from Humongous Entertainment. ;) This one is actually not too unusual, in my opinion! All instruments actually sound like real instruments. Although not counting the bass, I suppose they're not very common instruments (I'm also a bit unsure about the lead sound, but it doesn't sound that unusual to me).
6.2: That's pretty unique, and nice, too!
6.3: Glad someone picked Mother 3. :) I would like to read or hear about how this soundtrack was made. It can't have been mostly streamed audio, as the soundtrack is very long, and that would not have fit on the soundtrack, I'm pretty sure. I do wonder why you picked this track; it's not one of the nicer ones, to me. :) (I love Monkey's Delivery Service) I also love the drum solo, which I just managed to find the name of by luck: it's called Zombeat. :)
Responses to Dulstar's picks
6.1: Hey, another one from Earthbound! I would agree that these are pretty strange sounds! I like the track. :)
6.2: That's cool!
I started quite late and I wouldn't like to go to bed too late, so I'll do Proxima's picks later. :)
Is anyone else still responding to others' picks, or even listening to them?? Besides Colorful Arty, that is. :P (I'm glad he is!)

I do listen to the other's answers but I don't respond to them because I don't necessarily have something to say about their choices. But know that I listen to everybody's pick and that it's really cool to see how everyone here have their own taste in music and video games. IchoTolot, for example, seems to like a certain real-time strategy game series. :P It's just super fun to share our opinions on game music and this in complete harmony. I'm also really glad Turrican picked Apidya (or Agony's German cousin as I like to call it) for one of his answer, I like to see this game being recognised.
I am listening, it's just that besides all the other things I was/am working on there was little time+energy to formulate comments on every pick here on top of that. Just be assured that I am indeed listening. :)
Oh, I am glad to hear that, guys! :)
I am now also quite busy with university, so I honestly don't mind that the game isn't moving along for now. :P I do hope it will continue later. Or maybe next summer?...
My apologies, Proxima. I must've missed your Round 3 choices since they were given after Round 3 ended. ;P I've updated my Round 3 feedback post to include your choices too.
Am I the only one who miss this thread? It hasn't been updated in more than a year, and I kinda wish it could be continued. Granted, this probably is not the best time of the year to do so, and the music tribe in the Discord somewhat fits this role but, it doesn't feel the same. If anyone wants to revive this game, maybe during a better suited holiday period, I'll be super glad! :cute:
I've been updating some of my links by the way, either because I found better recordings or because I needed to replace dead links, mostly the YouTube ones, you can easily guess why.

I don't, to be honest! I have a lot of activity nowadays (although a bit less while in lockdown), and I'm not sure if I'd be able to spare the time to listen to everyone's picks, if it was anywhere near as active as it used to be. In fact, I already got too busy for it last year when university got on its way, and I never got to listen to Proxima's picks.
I do think of this game now and then, when one of the pieces of music that I got from this game plays on my phone! :)
