Title: The Video Game Music Challenge [Official Game Thread]
Post by: Nessy on July 20, 2020, 01:18:06 PM
Welcome to the Video Game Music Challenge!

A fun daily challenge inspired by a similar challenge/list Lana T. posted on the Lemmings Discord.

Please read before participating:

1) You will be given three short descriptions of a certain type of video game music, and it's up to you to write down the title of one specific video game track from one specific video game that matches each description and essentially creating a list of three different video game tracks. Links to your music track choices such as one on YouTube for others to listen to is not required but highly recommended!

2) Please post your list into a spoiler tag on this thread so that people that have already posted their own list can look but people that haven't posted their list yet won't be accidentally influenced.

3) You will have roughly until the deadline stated during that round to not only get your list of titles posted but in the meantime everyone is encouraged to discuss everyone's choices and list.

4) After that round is done another set of descriptions will be posted. This challenge will roughly end when general interest starts to die down, in the hopes that sometime in the future someone else will take over and revive the challenge!

To discuss any concerns or questions please post them in this dedicated thread (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5002)

First round

1) Favorite music that's used in a main title screen
2) Music that you like from a game you haven't played yet
3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born

Second Round

1) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
2) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
3) Favorite final boss battle music

Third Round

1) Music that seems to be underrated in your opinion (basically music you like that may not be liked as much by others)
2) Music you associate with frustration
3) Music that makes you feel nostalgic

Fourth Round (By Turrican)

1) Music with an uplifting beat and sound
2) Music that is more atmospheric sounding
3) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it

Fifth Round (By Colorful Arty)

1) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
2) A really creepy/scary track from a game (Note: unlike dark and gloomy the intention of this one is to actually make you feel fearful/scared)
3) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time

Sixth Round (By 607) Until August 31 at 18:00 UTC

1) Music with unusual sounds
2) Favorite music that plays in a cave or underground area
3) Music that is technologically impressive (for the system it's on)

Even though you're meant to post your favourite in each category, I'm already posting most of my favourite music on Twitter / Discord each day. Everything I post here would be stuff I plan to post there, so instead, I'll stick to stuff which among my favorites rather than the #1 best pick. (Though if anyone wants to know what the #1 would be, you can ask.)

I'll have to wait a little to participate, I'm afraid, as I have drive issues! I am hoping to fix them tomorrow, though. I suppose I could link to music from YouTube, in the meantime, but considering that many YouTube channels uploading copyrighted video game music have been taken down recently, it would be very hard to find good quality uploads, I reckon. (on that note: I hope my channel will survive, as I've uploaded a good few video game soundtracks myself! :$)

I'm treating this as a music sharing thing with a theme, so if multiple came to mind, rather than picking one I just put both.

Come now, that's clearly not in the spirit of the game:

1) You will be given three short descriptions of a certain type of video game music, and it's up to you to write down the title of one specific video game track...

Ah yes, good shout. OK:

1.1:
Favourite music, now that's almost impossible to do within an hour. :P I'd have to first think of nominations for a while, and then listen to them all to rate them. I've got a list of nominations for Menu music for a video that I would like to do once... but that's a bit different from Title Screen music, I'd say.
After a minute of contemplation...

Ah, it seems that the little challenge I had with my friends made it to the Forum. I know that I'm late now (I was away for a few days) but if you allow me to, I'd like to put back my choices here too, since not everyone has access to Discord. Also, I'd like to point out that my choices are not my favourites per say, since my friends and I had additional rules to make things "spicier" (mine was to not reuse a game franchise twice).

As the next round is about to start, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions:

* I know it's not always possible, but please try to find videos of the music at its normal length rather than "extended". It takes enough time as it is to listen to all the entries without some of them being spread out for half an hour!
* If you have a playlist link (it will have "&list=" in the middle), cut out the "&list=" and everything after that. Again, this just makes it easier to listen to your picks.

I see what you mean, but most videos on YouTube fade the track out after the track's played twice (that's what I do myself :P). I don't know of many that fade it out after one.
(by the way, shouldn't these posts about etiquette and such be in the other topic? :$)

It's alright. If it turned into a discussion then yes.

So I wasn't expecting so many people to participate which is awesome! However, it does mean that maybe it's for the best to slightly tweak the deadline for this round to give people more time to listen and respond. So I think I'll change the end of this current round to July 25 at 13:30 UTC.

To quickly summarise a discussion we just had on discord:

I agree with Nessy that with the participation level being so high, it makes sense for each round to last longer than the originally planned 3 days, so that people have time to listen and respond to each other's picks. However, participation level will probably stay high, so it would be best to stick to the same round length throughout the game. I felt that going all the way up to 7 days would slow things down too much, as while it's nice to have time to respond properly to each other, I'm also excited about getting the next set of prompts. I think 5 days per round is a good compromise.

Really a great variety of tracks here!

@Arty No I haven't put my first song in a lemmings level yet, but I did a let's play of the game on my YouTube channel.

I noticed that there were quite a few MegaMan tracks here. I must confess though that I never had a nintendo console so nearly all of mario and megaman passed me completely. I only had a gameboy back in the days apart from access to a PC. So it's nice to hear some tracks I don't know about here!

It's also nice to see Jazz and Turrican music as through SQron and Simon I was already introduced to quite a few of them. :)

I loved the atari st version of the Titus the fox music, it felt very atmospheric and made the game more magical and interesting.  Cool I noticed Jazz Jack rabbit as well getting featured, the music is actually quite good in that one, it reminded of the days my brother and I were doing a competition against each other to see who would get the furthest.

Sorry I haven't gotten to everyone.

But without further ado, my favourite credits theme is

I really wonder what tracks other people have picked for this one!!

2.2:
Aah, this is going to be a hard one, because while there are some games I've disliked (there aren't too many), some of them are so obscure I probably won't be able to find the soundtrack on YouTube. :P Actually, I am thinking of a game now, let's see... Nope, can't find it, as expected. :P I might upload it myself someday, but I haven't even finished the game yet, and I'm frankly not sure if I'd want to finish it again on pc to record the soundtrack, as if I recall correctly the levels were quite long and somewhat challenging...
Okay, there's another game I don't like that I played last summer, and I liked one of the tracks a bit.

2.3:
Ooh, that's an interesting one, because I currently have a WIP boss battle track myself. ;) Although that's more like film music than video game music, because it tells a story rather than just setting a theme. But what is my favourite boss battle music?

Hey all, mind if I join in? Since this game was first suggested, I didn't post in the topic expressing my interest, and I missed out on the first round. I was mostly worried about not being able to find anything, especially since there are so many games that I haven't even played myself. Also, sorry for cutting it so close to the closing time of the round. For future rounds, I'll definitely try and post earlier. No guarantees, but I will try and do so.

However, I was able to find some stuff for the second round, so here's mine.

Second round:

This next one was the most difficult for me, especially since I pretty much like every game I have ever played. However, after so much thought, this is probably my least favorite out of the ones I have played. Of course, I could had simply kept this one blank.

Comments on R2

There were again a ton of great tracks in here.

I knew a few of them like the Portal, Undertale, Risk of Rain and Turrican ones, but as I had not played many Nintendo games at all for example - I mostly just had my PC - there were many new experiences for me in here.

Although I've heard the final boss music from Donkey Kong Country before as one of my mates back then had a Super Nintendo and I saw him beat the final boss. ;)
I also played the first few Pokemon games on the old game boys back then so i was familar with the excellent champoin theme here.

It really shows that we enjoy a lot of different games and therefore we are lucky to receive many different ones here and not just all from 1 game series. :)

That is completely unacceptable 607 you posted three times in a row, Namida will not be happy, only kidding I've put my second and third round ones in here, hope that's okay. Everyone has picked some good music. Now we know what games we like and what games we hate. Good questions there Nessy.

Sorry for being late! Shame on me! :P

Fourth Round!

I want to do a bit of an experiment with this specific round: this time the prompts were suggested to me by Turrican on Discord, and this actually gave me an idea. If anyone participating in this game would like to suggest prompts to be featured in the next round please feel free to PM them to me on the forum or on Discord. That way we can keep this game a bit more fresh with different ideas from different people :)

1) Music with an uplifting beat and sound
2) Music that is more atmospheric sounding
3) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it

Round will end on August 15 at 14:00 UTC

Eh it's fine, I had enough other things to do. ;) But this evening I did feel like playing this game particularly much, so I'm glad to see a new round has started!

Let's see... exciting!
These three prompts are all very similar, I guess they were made to fit a theme. :)
4.1:
For the first one there's one game my mind goes to right away.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

4.2: More atmospheric than what? :P Than the tune I picked for 4.1? That's be very easy. ;P
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am curious what kinds of tracks others will have picked here, as there are very many atmospheres that could be evoked, and yet many people might have gone for a similar one. We'll see! (the Wiktionary definition: Evoking a particular emotional or aesthetic quality.)

4.3: Very dark and gloomy, huh? ;) Well, let me think... Actually, let me look up what 'gloomy' means first :P (yes, I looked up definitions for 'uplifting', 'atmospheric' and 'gloomy') Yes, I thought of one!

Oh, so the rules are changing. I'm actually wondering if the descriptions are all going to be different from the original list from there, since I've already done the challenge before and, so far, I was just reposting my old answers. Anyway, since those are new descriptions, I'm no longer under my "use only one franchise" rule anymore and my choices are going to be more within my favourites musics of the moment and maybe be less varied. But enough talk, here's my answers :

Uplifting music (click to show/hide)

Atmospheric music (click to show/hide)

Swapped my choices between "dark and gloomy music" and "creepy and scary music" because I didn't know their meanings were different. I can thank Nessy for allowing me to do that!

Fifth Round!

This time the round has been created by Colorful Arty:

1) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
2) A really creepy/scary track from a game (Note: unlike dark and gloomy the intention of this one is to actually make you feel fearful/scared)
3) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time

Round will end on August 22 at 18:00 UTC

Interesting, another one who does!

3) Birabuto Kingdom! Proof that the original Game Boy could have great music (Plus Tetris)
Or just listen to any of Alberto J. Gonzáles' work on Game Boy (and GBC). ;)
Considering it's a world based on trash, the music is gorgeous.

@Colorful Arty
3.2 I'd recommend Claw to you. It's a  platformer with beautiful, even mesmerising, 2D graphics (it is tough as nails, though!); the main character is voiced by Stephan Weyte (listen here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLpfN6w0UPE)) whose work was featured in several Humongous Entertainment games, and he did the famous voice of Caleb in Blood! The game itself can be downloaded here: https://captainclaw.net/en/downloads.html

4.1 You could say that! The actual game and Mr. Nutz are precious, though.

4.2 I think it'd be a challenge to find a weak track in the DKC2 OST!

I'm going to hold off on the last one for now. I need to think a bit more about what would qualify a piece as technologically impressive, I think. Knowing how something was done can make something that didn't seem technically impressive become technologically impressive, but it can also make something that seemed superficially technologically impressive suddenly become a lot less impressive.

Eh, eventually there was going to be one that I didn't have a good answer for. It happens. Although in my case it's kind of the opposite - I do know a lot about the technology, but I tend not to be all that impressed by it, possibly from observing from now and not as it was created? Probably each upgrade in the hardware would have been impressive at the time it was released, but now, it's not so impressive anymore unless it really breaks my notions of what the hardware is capable of. Somewhere out there, someone managed to get an NES to play this .mod file (albeit at a bit lower quality) (https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_player&query=35151) using a generally unused ability the system had to play PCM (DPCM, however, was commonly used), but I can't find the post again. There is, however, a reason that the functionality was generally unused: it took too much CPU. For that reason the only game I'm aware of that used it (Battletoads) only used it on the pause screen. Allegedly, this song on the SNES (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAPpVplHiDE) required some tricks to get working, but I can't really verify it due to not knowing enough about that particular system's exact capabilities (i.e. I know it uses sampled audio and has 8 channels, but I don't know any finer details than that about the limitations). It's a nice song, for sure, but it also doesn't seem that technologically impressive without knowledge of what they had to do to make it work. It's discussed as part of  this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvIzIAgRWV0), but it has a number of inaccuracies overall, so I'm not really sure how credible the specific claims about the song are.

Waiit, on the NES? :o I thought you were saying on the SNES! I was going to say that  the Toy Story menu theme on Mega Drive (https://youtu.be/Unh2dAEHtZo) also plays a .mod. Just listened to the Battletoads NES pause screen music, though, and that is cool! That reminds me, I also have a GBC game that uses PCM samples. I think you can hardly call the music music though, as besides the title theme, it's only percussion, there's no melody. I can't actually find that soundtrack anywhere, though! You can see footage from the game here, though. https://youtu.be/_Qg5mi3wgSI I would call the soundtrack and the game itself technologically impressive, even though I dislike both. ;)

I do listen to the other's answers but I don't respond to them because I don't necessarily have something to say about their choices. But know that I listen to everybody's pick and that it's really cool to see how everyone here have their own taste in music and video games. IchoTolot, for example, seems to like a certain real-time strategy game series. :P  It's just super fun to share our opinions on game music and this in complete harmony. I'm also really glad Turrican picked Apidya (or Agony's German cousin as I like to call it) for one of his answer, I like to see this game being recognised.

Am I the only one who miss this thread? It hasn't been updated in more than a year, and I kinda wish it could be continued. Granted, this probably is not the best time of the year to do so, and the music tribe in the Discord somewhat fits this role but, it doesn't feel the same. If anyone wants to revive this game, maybe during a better suited holiday period, I'll be super glad! :cute:

I've been updating some of my links by the way, either because I found better recordings or because I needed to replace dead links, mostly the YouTube ones, you can easily guess why.

I don't, to be honest! I have a lot of activity nowadays (although a bit less while in lockdown), and I'm not sure if I'd be able to spare the time to listen to everyone's picks, if it was anywhere near as active as it used to be. In fact, I already got too busy for it last year when university got on its way, and I never got to listen to Proxima's picks.
I do think of this game now and then, when one of the pieces of music that I got from this game plays on my phone! :)
