Title: Lemmings Forums Level Design Contest #8 (Playing Phase - Discussion Topic)
Post by: namida on November 12, 2015, 12:01:44 PM
This topic is for discussion of the levels, feedback, posting replays, etc. For creators wishing to post updates, or if you're looking for the latest updates, please check this topic (http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2301.0) instead.

Only three entries this time... where are you people at? :P Anyway, once again (as expected, due to this contest's rules), all levels are NeoLemmix levels:

<V1> "Maybe, not such a Dreadnought" by GigaLem
<V1> "Eyes In The Dark" by IchoTolot
<V6> "Lemmings Gone Wild!" by Nepster

All of these levels use a graphic set from the L2/L3 Style Pack, which can be found here: http://www.neolemmix.com/old/stylepacks/L2L3Pack.zip
To use these styles with NeoLemmix Editor, place them in the "styles/NeoLemmix/" folder (you can also use a custom folder if you know how to set one up).
To use them with NeoCustLemmix (outside of playtest mode from the editor), place them in the same folder as NeoCustLemmix itself.

Update phase will end at whichever comes last: 23rd November 2015, or 72 hours since the most recent update.
Update phase has ended. Voting will open on 27th November 2015.

As a reminder, the prizes available for this contest are:
- US$5.00
- One month's advertising on the forum's news ticker
- Title screen logo and/or rank signs for your NeoLemmix pack designed by me (you can request what kind of design, but do note that you'll need to give me some time to make them)

Music track: Remember to rename IchoTolot_track_52.it back to track_52.it to avoid error messages. No need to copy my mistakes ;).

GigaLem's Maybe, not such a Dreadnought

Good level, at least if I take my general dislike of zombies and ghosts into account. And I am not sure I like the blatant self-promotion within the level ;).

IchoTolot's Eyes In The Dark

Very good solution, though I have one major issue with the level: The hatches are far from each other and at the beginning, you have to assign skills quite early. As you never know in which hatch spawns the next lemming, you have to check constantly all around the level for newly appeared lemmings - that's annoying. And even the small minimap at the bottom is hardly of any help, because it does not cover the whole level.
The music track is none of my favourites, though it fits the level's theme.

PS @namida: I miss a description of ghosts in the general NeoLemmix features thread or at least in the specific Ghost thread.

Here is my feedback:

"Maybe, not such a Dreadnought" by GigaLem:

Spoiler
Quite a good level, but (if I did not backroute it) the top left hatch with the zombies is quite seperated from the other part of the level. They are making their own little level and after they are done you can continue on the rest. So that part could be taken out.

"Lemmings Gone Wild!" by Nepster:

Spoiler
Nice little level! But I may have backrouted it, because I think the platformer isn't there just for fun.

Comment on my own stuff:

Spoiler
Hm ok I'll keep that in mind (intended solution btw ). I thought 4 grps of Lems with one savely locked away (and one only needing a blocker) isn't too much and handling only 2 main groups which can be containt with a few skills is alright, but yeah that seems to be a little bit more difficult in a vertical level, when the minimap isn't working so well.
I'll try to keep the multitasking thing a bit more down in vertical levels in the future (must still get a hang on them ;)).
Although I think that the core of the problem is more about the orientation in a vertical level as handling a few multitasking skills over a short time period.

Comment on IchoTolot's solution to my level

Indeed that is a backroute, having almost no similarities to the intended solution.

Comment on "Comment on my own stuff":

I should have already mentioned in my first post, why this specific level was so frustrating for me: During my first attempt I saved only 92%. Why? Because I missed the first lemming coming out of the top right hatch. But as you said, the top right hatch is so easy, that I first checked all other parts in detail :(.

Ok Version 2 of Nepsters level solved. I think (and hope) this could be a bit more like it

Better, but you still used only one of the two tricks. V3 will come tomorrow.

Finally I got some time for V3, but I think this is another backroute.

Nice solution, but still not quite intended.

...or maybe not ;).

Honestly, I am starting to think about returning back to V3 and calling it the final version.

That really feels like one step forward, three steps backwards, one step forward, three steps sideways...

Sry for no further test atm Nepster, but at the time I'm quite a bit busy. If I find some free time where I have the mood for more puzzeling I will test the next version as well.

Let's just say, you take a little break to allow all others some time to try out the latest version ;).

If anyone is interested in the intended solution to Lemmings Gone Wild! - here it is.
