The only useful thing I'm noticing so far is that all the white koans have an odd length. One theory I had was "If the middle letter is a vowel", and perhaps "If the middle letter is a unique vowel"; but QUEUING is a counterexample for the first, and TRIBE is a counterexample for both.

AKHTBN (The koan is white) if the vowel's alphabetic position equals the length of the word.

The very first koan on the white list invalidates that rule. A is the 1st letter of the alphabet, and AAPAA is 5 letters long. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.
Also, which vowel if there's more than one different one?
