Like the quiz, but with logic puzzles/riddles to fill in for the questions.

You may ask questions (within reason) to gather more information.

NOTE:  Due to the likelihood of someone getting a wrong answer, wait for your answer to be confirmed to ask a new riddle.

To start:

A lemming is given a skill.  Soon after, he knows that he will soon die.  Why is this?

HINT:  Skill stock/selection matters.

Simon

I love these.

Skill is one of the original eight skills?
If so, a blocker? Bomber?
Are any ground removing skills yet available after the skill assignment?

-- Simon

Dullstar

Bomber:  Does not matter.
No ground removing skills.

The Doctor

Lol, one scenario could be a Lemming who has just been made a climber, but can see in sight a large drop and not a brolly to be seen for miles. http://www.lemmingsforums.com/Smileys/lemmings/tongue.gif" alt=":P" title="Tongue" class="smiley" />
This Lemmings forum is simply *fabulous*!

Dullstar

Floater?  Does not matter.
Skill was a blocker.

Simon

Then he knows he's going to die because of the missing ground removing skills, there's no future for him besides nuke? (Exploder removes ground.)

You got it right!  It's your turn to ask one (remember, it doesn't HAVE to be lemmings related).

Simon

Whee :)

This is one that happened to me in real life. I'm a college student and live in an apartment. One day, I lacked a certain item for a particular task. I still managed to get the job done using a hammer, a screwdriver, a pipe wrench and a towel. What did I want to do?

Any yes/no-questions are possible.

-- Simon

Dullstar

Was it plumbing-related?  Pipe repairs?

The Doctor

A series of horrifying murders involving a blow to the head, drilling out their brains, unscrewing their ears, and cleaning it with a towel? ... And you lacked your sanitary latex gloves. :-)

Lol, no idea.
This Lemmings forum is simply *fabulous*!

Simon

Was it plumbing-related? No.
Pipe repairs? No.

-- Simon

Dullstar

O_o.  What IS this?

Was it a repair job of anything?

Was it building something?

Simon

Was it a repair job of anything? No.
Was it building something? No.

If it keeps raining no's, I can give a small hint soon.

-- Simon

Dullstar

Okay, maybe this thread won't work as an anarchy.  I must question the possibility of this riddle being solvable.  Please read the newly added rules.

Simon

I have played this one with a friend over Instant Messaging. He solved it after around 20 yes/no-questions without hints. He had a bit of experience with lateral puzzles, though.

Major hint: I was hungry. Damn hungry!

-- Simon

Dullstar

What does THAT have to do with the riddle?!  We all know you don't use hammers, wrenches, etc. to eat!

The Doctor

Clearly you are unaware of the concept of thinking outside of the box. http://www.lemmingsforums.com/Smileys/lemmings/wink.gif" alt=";)" title="Wink" class="smiley" />
This Lemmings forum is simply *fabulous*!

Dullstar

*DING!*

This is a stupid idea, but did you use the tools to make the food?

I don't know if you are willing to answer this, but what was the tool you were missing?

Simon

but did you use the tools to make the food? No.

If I told you the missing object, the puzzle would be solved. :-) That thing can usually only be used for what it's intended to, which is what I managed to do with the weird collection of tools instead.

-- Simon

Dullstar

I think you need to give us another hint.

Chmera

You were opening a can. You used the screwdriver and hammer to make a hole in the can, the wrench to open it and the towel to either clean up or hold the can in place. The tool you were missing was a can opener.
If you hadn't mentioned 'hungry' I would have guessed you were opening a can of paint and using the towel in place of a brush.

I figured those because that's the sort of thing I'd do in that situation. Going to the shop to buy the can opener is for boring people. =P

Simon

Way to go! That's the solution, complete with usages of all the tools.

The towel was put under the can. That way, the hammer-and-chisel operation produced less noise. I live in an apartment house and didn't want to wake up everyone else late at night. :-)

-- Simon

Chmera

Here's my riddle, then. It's more on the lines of Simon's because I'm terrible at every other sort. =P

You need to drop an egg from a height of three feet without it breaking. You can build something around the egg (not on the floor) to keep it safe, but your only materials are pipe cleaners, cardboard, cellotape and elastic bands. What would work best? Feel free to answer with a diagram if you like. =P

Dullstar

Okay.  You pack the stuff tightly together to make a shock absorber.  The best to use would probably be the pipe cleaners, elastic bands, and possibly cellotape, presuming it's soft.  You have to make sure that there is room to place the egg inside it.  You could use the cardboard to give your shock absorber the final touch (outer casing).  Is this correct?

Chmera

The box could crumple (it shouldn't) and pipe cleaners and elastic bands don't crumple well (they should). =P

Dullstar

Let's say the cardboard and the pipe cleaners/elastic bands are in the shape of an egg.  Would it work then?

If not, maybe you could make a soft surface using the  materials on the ground for the egg to land on?

Simon

I made an instructions sheet!

-- Simon

Dullstar

Clever.  Kind of hard to understand.  You lost me at the parachute, Simon.  What did you make it out of?  Cardboard?  That would not work, would it?  Eh, don't know.  I guess we have to wait for Chmera

Simon

Heh, yep, it's an error. I meant "cut it out from cardboard" where I said "cardbox", which would be dumb indeed.

-- Simon

Dullstar

Interesting idea, I have to say.  Do cardboard parachutes work?

Chmera

Fascinating. Your idea is more or less what I had in mind, Simon, though I don't know if the parachute would work. Other than that, quite sound. Since I asked this mostly out of curiosity, I'd say Simon gets this one.

Mine was that the egg was to be put in a small, tightly-fitted box attached by the corners to the inside of a larger box with high tension rubber bands. Perhaps I could make these two contraptions and try them for real at some point. =P

Simon

Heh, thanks. :-)

I don't have another good puzzle ready yet, I'm sorry. If anyone wants to jump in, feel free to do so. Otherwise I'll post when I have one.

-- Simon

Dullstar

Okay...  made this one up off the top of my head.

A really thin creature is found dead in thousands of really small pieces with an appliance near it.  What is the appliance?

Chmera

Dullstar

Exactly!  That was the best riddle I could think of at the time.

A Cheapo lemmings level?

By the way, it's not your turn to ask a riddle.

Could also be the level "Upsidedown World" if you turned your monitor upsidedown so the lemmings are upsidedown but the ground returns to normal!

Likewise. I turned the screen upside-down during my created level  "Upsidedown Islands"!  http://www.lemmingsforums.com/Smileys/lemmings/laugh.gif" alt=":D" title="Laugh" class="smiley" /> http://www.lemmingsforums.com/Smileys/lemmings/tongue.gif" alt=":P" title="Tongue" class="smiley" />

How about this one: This was a real life event which happened before I came in to the forums.

Mr. W was planning to melt chocolate without a cooker, so we put it in a microwave. Mr. W said "We'll heat for three minutes" and then the chocolate got burnt. At that point I opened the microwave door and all the smoke was coming out, setting off the fire alarm. Who's fault was it? Mine or Mr W?

Mr. W because he said to put it in for three minutes.

For future reference minimac, don't ask a riddle until your answer is confirmed right, but I'll let it slip!  Eh, that riddle didn't have  an answer set in stone, so you're okay.

Yes!  I got it right!

OS/2, Linux, Windows, Amiga OS, Mac OS, Mac OS X, and DOS are in a corner.  Who's missing?

Ramon

I guess it should be the SNES, as it features original Lemmings too. (SNES port is my favourite one.)

Dullstar

I never realized there was an OS/2 Lemmings port, and Linux doesn't support it natively (with the Linux version of DOSbox, though, it does).  The missing one if FreeBSD.  Although I don't really know anything about it.  I guess it's somewhat similar to Linux or something.  Eh, who knows.  If we by some chance have someone on these forums who uses that OS, they can tell us about it.

chaos_defrost

Here's a filler riddle for now, if Ramon posts I'll save this for later.

It lies 100 feet up in the air.

However, its back is on the ground.

What is it?
