PSP Level Packs?
« on: November 30, 2008, 04:05:46 PM »
Since Sony shutdown their Lemmings PSP/PS2 servers, has a new online database of PSP Lemmings level packs cropped up? I'm currently in the midsts of recreating Oh No! More Lemmings for PSP and...

1. I'm curious if this has already been done and

2. When I'm finished I'd like to have somewhere to upload it so other people can enjoy the fruits of my labor!

I'm so disappointed that I waited until now to buy this game... totally missed out on the online service :(

By the way, I'm in the U.S., so I'd like a site that has U.S. level packs since I've already found some European ones online that won't work for me...

jonreyno, would you happen to be able to tell me where those servers are?

On another note, I'm converting some of the Oh No More Lemmings levels to PSP format. From what I gather, if I just upload the save block containing the data, it should work on other peoples' PSPs. But it will overwrite a slot.

Not that many on here seem 100% fussed over the 2006/2007 remakes for Sony's consoles, but I do rather like them and the level editor.

That's kinda dumb.  Why should the levels be incompatible between versions?  Well, that's commercial game development for you...

It's the servers that are incompatible, because Europe had an online service before the actual release of the PSP, so it was logical to continue to use that service in PAL regions.

If you can upload them to your computer, just upload them to some lemmings content website or a file sharing website.

The only drawback is that the levels are not read-only like through the servers, and they replace specific blocks on the memory stick. But, it's still fun. My ONML port is nearly done. I'm on Havoc. xD

Why do they need to be read-only?

Well, when you go to choose a level on the PSP, it offers the Edit function by default, rather than play. So what's the charm in playing levels if you can just make them easier for yourself?

Though I suppose if anyone was serious about playing, they wouldn't. But still, even I get tripped up now and then.

Doesn't everyone?  Actually, I think someone should totally remake Lemmings 2 by making it so you don't have to switch between commands almost as fast as it is humanly possible.

You can make them read only manually.

I'm not sure what OS you use, but I know that you can do it in Windows by right clicking on it and then clicking "Properties."  Then click on the box that says, "Read-only."  If you don't use Windows, Mr. K *might* know how to do it for your OS.
If not, have someone who knows how to do it on whatever OS they use change it for you.

That's not the same thing... that's FAT32 permissions, not in-game mechanics. And it could cause the game to crash if one tries to edit. Which is not nearly the same thing as what I said.

You have to own the game to know what I'm talking about.

Show me what you mean via screenshots.  I really don't even have a PSP, to be quite honest.

Can't really take screenshots of a PSP ... because ... it's a PSP. I don't have a suitable camera either. And not having PSP nor the game, I again say that you'd need to have them to know what I'm talking about. I'll try to approximate ...

When you load up a level pack in the Start menu of the game, you get four options
=====
| Special
| Classic
| User
| Extra
=====
Special is the Team17 levels.
Classic is the DMA Design levels.
User is the custom levels, see below.
Extra is Team17 levels from the old YourPSP website.

So you click on User, and you pick a level pack.

Now, if the level pack is "finalised" (borrowing that term from CD burning parlant), you are only given the option to play a level. If it is not "finalised", you get the following options.
======
| Play
| Edit
| Rename
| Erase
======
Play predictably plays the level.
Edit starts the level editor.
Rename renames the level, how did you guess.
Erase clears the level.

The trouble is, to finalise a level requires publishing via the server. Since those are unavailable, the only way to share involves non-finalised save files that overwrite a slot on the memory card.

To illustrate:

If I download a level pack, it is saved to whatever available memory card slot I specify.
If I transfer the save file. it will overwrite whatever memory card slot it corresponds to.

So my ONML remake, for example, begins on slot 1.
If you already have a user level bank on slot 1, well, my ONML remake will overwrite your bank 1. So you'd need to back it up and store it on your computer or something, rather inefficient.

But besides the point anyway. Doesn't seem to be many PSP Lemmings users around.

Those who were curious got the PS2 version. A-ha, can't access the memory card on a PS2. (*cuddles Memory Stick Pro*)

And, my ONML remake is almost done. Just testing physics now. I replaced some levels I didn't like with custom levels. One custom level per 10 levels (since User Levels occur in 10-level lots per slot on PSP Lemmings).

Wow, they did it rather strange with the memory thing.  You'd think it would just put it on the next available block...

OH.  I guess it doesn't do it on the first block, but actually on the SPECIFIED block.  Must have passed that up.
