Mysterious 404s when trying to post
« on: October 06, 2006, 01:03:06 PM »
I don't know if I'm going nuts, but I'm limited by what I can post without getting redirected to the idiotstudios 404 message from clicking Post or Preview. For instance, if I try to post a message containing the normally-spaced phrase "Lynx_port_of", I get redirected to the 404 every single time without fail.  :undecided:

I mean, I know Atari didn't exactly back a winning horse, but there's no reason for the forums to exhibit such blatant GameGear favouritism.

It appears that "lynx " results in a 404 :huh2: :huh2:
(the space after "lynx" is in italics)

lynx

EDIT: OK, just posted it!  Maybe a passing error?  Let me try again.  lynx.  EDIT2: Yep, there we go.  God knows what happened.

Lynx.

EDIT: ZOMGWTF I JUST FOUND SOMETHING.  Yeah, if you put in "Lynx_port_of" it 404's.  I don't know why; the forum censored word list is blank so it might be something out of my control.  I'll talk to the host about it.

I know, that's the weirdest part! All 3 words have to be in there. There's definitely more combinations than that, as I remember posting once before and smacking into the same problem (only getting around it by using cut-and-paste to determine what words it didn't like, aka. the bisection method)

Uh... no they don't. Did you see my post? The normally spaced string "lynx " causes a 404.

I wonder how the programmers could force a 404, though.

It may be something set up by the server.  Maybe someone under the name of l-y-n-x is banned from my host and that is having to do with keeping them out?

Wtf, now I can't even write the word.

Yeah you're right, "lynx_" does the same thing. I missed the space before when I tried it  separately.

Seriously, out of egotistical jerk mode, I have no clue what strange error is attacking these boards. It doesn't seem to happen elsewhere, although i'll check to be sure.

That is our host.

Anyway, I just tested this at my other forum.  Same thing happens.  Dunno if it's to do with Idiot Studios/Porplemontage, or if it's an SMF bug.

lynx port of

EDIT: SOLVED!!!!!!!!111111!!!!11one

Apparently this has to do with the hosting running mod_security on Apache.  It filters certain things out, and I guess Lynx is something.

Anyway, what I did was make an .htaccess file that disables mod_security for my hosting account.  I hope that's OK.

NOW IT WORKS. PARTYTIME!

Good job.

Incidentally, Lynx is just not the name of a failed handheld console, as some people here seems to be thinking.  It is also the name for a text-only web browser that used to be popular in Unix in the ancient days of the WWW:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynx_%28web_browser%29

Still not sure how that is relevant to security though. :undecided:  Other meanings for "Lynx" listed in Wikipedia:

I still use lynx on a regular basis through SSH, as the alternative is paying the university their exorbitant internet tax (which would involve waiting untold hours in a line). Works great as long as you don't want images. Or Javascript.

You can use SSH but not browse the web?

In Western Australia there's this peering service called WAIX, which (in a nutshell) connects almost every single machine located in Perth. Normally the university forces you to use a metered proxy for outside websites, but allows free unproxied WAIX traffic. Which is brilliant as my lovely server I have a shell account on is available.
