Charting the Lemmingverse?
« on: January 27, 2023, 10:34:12 AM »
Inspired by The Tomato Watcher's excellent video on Lemmings's weird lore, which can be found here...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oOD9PLcPGQ

... it occurred to me to throw out a quick list of everything either "official" or officially-licensed as being associated with our favourite green-haired numpties in some fashion - mostly because I was simply curious:

Lemmings 1 (inc. ONML and Xmas/Holiday Lemmings)
Lemmings 2: The Tribes
Lemmings 3: The Lemmings Chronicles (or All New World of Lemmings)
Lemmings 3D (inc. the Winterland expansion)
Lemmings Paintball
The Adventures of Lomax
Lemmings Revolution
Lemmings Forever (cancelled game from the early 2000s)
Love a Lemming
Lemmings PSP
EyeToy Lemmings
Lemmings PS3
Lemmings Tribes (the Glu Mobile game not to be confused with L2)
Lemmings Touch
Lemmings Puzzle Adventure

That's the games. In terms of other media, I found:

Lemmings (comic featured in Max Overload)
The Story of the 12 Tribes of Lemming Island (book)
The Genesis Quest (adventure game book 1)
The Hypnosis Enigma (adventure game book 2)

And that seems to be everything. Have I missed anything? Have there been forum threads like this one before? In which case, I apologise profusely. For me this was just an amusing list-making exercise. :P

Of course, NeoLemmix and Lix are part of my "headcanon" too, with NL being like an anthology series of lemming adventures from all across the timelines, and the Lix "creatures" simply being a peculiar mutant sub-species of lemming with yellow hair. ???

EDIT: I added EyeToy Lemmings, which until recently I didn't really appreciate as its own separate thing - but it is!

I fully admit that I'm just passing the time while I figure out how to get my copy of Lemmings 2 to work properly on DOSBox. :P At the moment it refuses to load anything beyond the first level of each tribe, and until I get it sorted I won't be able to play Tribes of Steel or Quest From Kieran 2, which I've been *itching* to try since I re-connected with the Lemmings fan community! :-[

You probably have the demo version, which doesn't allow you to go beyond the first level of each tribe.
I think you'll need to run L2-FIX.COM, if I remember correctly? Or maybe it was something else, but give it a shot.
Here's a download that has it: https://www.camanis.net/lemmings/files/games/lemmings_2/lemmings_2_dos.zip

I think that's the version I already downloaded (it seems to contain all the levels, as well as the L2-fix thingy) - but I might re-download it anyway. I'm using DOSBox via the D-Fend Reloaded front-end, which allows me to play different DOS games by quickly and easily clicking profiles rather than mounting the c: in the DOS prompt every time. I wonder if that's part of what's causing my issues...?

Absolutely! Nobody really plays Lemmings for the lore, but it's fun to try to fit it all together like a wonky jigsaw. :P

As far as I can piece together from the comic and the books, the Lemmings seem to have been around for thousands of years, may (or may not) originate from another dimension(!) and basically just wander aimlessly, causing chaos and mayhem wherever they go. They lived on their own island at first, which "the Guide" (aka the player) helped them settle. Then the same Guide helped them in their exodus from that island in L2 and helped them settle on their new archipelago in L3. After that, the lore is a bit of a free-for-all. 3D Lemmings suggested that there's still tribes such as the Circus lemmings and Medieval lemmings, but the lemming population just becomes super-diverse by the time of Puzzle Adventure, as they venture out into new worlds!

Lemmings PSP is just a reboot of the original game, so it slots into the same niche in the timeline. Lemmings Tribes (from Glu) could be a re-telling of Lemmings Chronicles but from a different point of view (focussing on Medieval and Space lemmings instead of Egyptian and Shadow).

Lemmings PS3 and Lemmings Touch expand upon PSP, so perhaps they are set during the the pre-L2 era, but the inclusion of mischievous Lemmings suggests a later setting.

Random thoughts:

Polyonomus from Love a Lemming could actually be another name from Evil Ed, the lemming wizard.

NeoLemmix, and all its tilesets and skills and wackiness, is an "anthology" of lemmings eras from L1 right through to the "modern era", which is why we've got excellent things like Minim's PS3 remakes, and levels using graphics from Sonic, Freedom Planet, Rayman, etc. The lemmings literally wander all across the multiverse. There are no rules. One thing always stays the same, no matter where in the timeline the player is: the lemmings are wandering around thoughtlessly, and they need help :)

But are you running the L2-FIX.COM (as opposed to L2.EXE)? When I run the latter, I can't progress beyond the first level either, but running L2-FIX.COM includes a crack allowing to progress further.

I don't use any fancy dosbox frontends, and you don't need to do all the mounting stuff. I just run dosbox L2-FIX.COM in the command prompt, or you can just drag L2-FIX.COM onto the dosbox symbol (wherever you have it) to start the game right away.

Yes, I've been running the L2-FIX.COM - and when I do, DOSBox seems to begin loading the game in a window, and then stops. There's text in the window indicating that the crack has been detected, but all that shows after that is a blinking cursor.

Honestly, I'm baffled. I'm going to re-download and re-install, just to make sure there are no extraneous files or data that's influencing the boot-up without me realising.

Thank you for your input. <3

Hey, I'm pretty sure I know your problem!

Load the L2-Fix.COM

Then, when it stops, press any key to proceed. I had this issue at first too.

I got this game playing smooth and perfect with just a little tweaking.

Thank you! I hope it really is that simple. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. I am, after all, a bit of an idiot. :forehead:
