Ok, here are 6 levels from Rule 1 that I solved so far (probably many backroutes)

1) Cranes': Hi Rise Hijinks (Couldn't get Talisman though)
2) Kaywhyn's: Bubble Trouble
3) Nessy's: A Rock and A Hardplace
4) Scmolem's: Climb the Water Tower
5) Silken Healer's: Building Bridges
6) The Tomato Watcher's: Spheres N' Cubes.

Yeah, that was a backroute!  Easy enough to fix though.  (I also have to remember to remove the background, since my original design has a subtle twilight sky background, but since the original lemmings didn't have backgrounds beyond the navy blue for the crystal tileset, it can't be included - pity, because it accents the red brickwork extremely well).

@eric That is one very big backroute to my R1 there. It totally misses all of the intended tricks. Just when I thought I had eliminated all backroutes by my own extensive testing too :XD: At the same time, I acknowledge that you never know, some might remain because someone manages to find a way to.

Anyway, as much as I hate to and wanted to avoid it, some steel should block it off completely. Let's see how this works out.

Got the Chamber of the Mummies solved - I quite enjoyed that one, as you can you work out what you have to do and plan ahead quite nicely.

Spheres N' Cubes solved.  This one feels very traditional, like something you'd see in the original game.  Also, if you want a talisman idea...

Played the Rule 1 levels. The only ones I've managed to solve so far are:

Flopsy's The Cooler Side Of Hell
NieSch's Take A Hike
Silken Healer's Building Bridges
The Tomato Watcher's Spheres 'N Cubes

These are all great levels; the last two are sweet, simple and solvable, and the first two showcase some particularly excellent mapmaking :lemcat:

I'll come back and have a go at the others for sure; I came close to solving Nessy's and Roundy's and I'd like to get solutions to these ones

Thanks for being the first person to submit a replay for any of my levels and thanks for the kind remarks.
Your solution is perfectly acceptable, this is pretty much an any solution is acceptable level. The skillset is strict enough to guard against the solutions I do not want to see on this level

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Let's Play Some Games was a major back route sadly, had to be very careful how to fix this without violating the rule though.

Random Acts of Nastiness is a nice alternative solution which I've allowed because you did use all of the skills and I really liked your creative solution, I wouldn't dream of blocking that amazing solution out.

I'm happy to hear the Casino Night and Star Light tilesets agree with you. I tried to make Casino Night as bright and flashy as possible. Star Light I went for a less flashy appearance but still some animations.
More of the same in Gotta Go Fast in a couple of months time ;P

@Armani Thanks for playing! Your solution to my R3 is the biggest backroute I've seen, while your solution to my R2 is a slight backroute. Indeed, if there was anyone I expected to backroute levels, it's you :P And this is after I have done my own extensive backroute testing (spent several hours in both making my first lemmings levels ever AND my own backroute testing!) before the playing phase began :XD: You're the only person who has played both my R2 and R3, and so your solutions are the only ones to them that I have seen so far.

Anyway, I have uploaded V2 of both my R2 and R3. Let's see how they hold up now :P Again, thanks for playing and the replays :)

Hey WillLem, honestly I think out of all my contest entries my R2 is the easiest one, while my R3 is likely the hardest one. At least it should be, depending on if I've managed to patch up Armani's horrendous backroute correctly with V2. Mind you, I have never made any levels before this contest, and I've always had this thought that I'm no good at level making and hence I can't make hard levels and therefore can't make contest worthy levels. So, I'm surprised to hear that you haven't been able to solve my R2 yet. However, good to know that my R2 isn't overly trivial! :P At the same time, my R1 has been played the most out of my other two entries, by two people (there might had been more than that, and if there is it either hasn't been solved yet or it has but I don't know for sure since no further replays of it have been posted), while my R2 and R3 have only been played by Armani so far, and other than one person who has said my R1 is hard, I have yet to hear about the difficulty of my levels. Eric hasn't said anything about the difficulty of my R1, but that's because he found a very severe backroute in my V1 of it, and I don't know if he's reattempted it since. Both my V2 and V3 of it should block it off completely, so it should be appropriately challenging now.

I haven't attempted any of the contest levels yet, but I will in about a week or so after the updates, if need be, come in! ;)

@gronkling As already mentioned on Discord, you played an older version of my R1, as your solution doesn't work on the most current version, which is V3. I imagine it's the exact same severe backroute that eric found. Also, I pretested Icho's contest levels, and I agree that his R1 is difficult, so no, it's not just you that's finding it hard. It did go through a couple of versions, and in the its current iteration he said that I got "95% of the intended solution." I'm sure you'll eventually be able to solve it, though.

@ericderkovits - I thought my solution to your R1 level was intended, but I would be careful if you plan on making it intended, because it's incredibly precise and fiddly to get right; the Basher stops prematurely more often than not.  Maybe look to making a talisman solution for it instead?

Thanks for playing! The solution was to play it in low-res :P Also, you seemed to have played the old version of my R2. Your replay does not work in the latest version of the level. Unless you sent me the wrong replay, no skills get assigned at all. It sounds like you found the exact same backroute as Armani did in V1 of it. Hopefully my V2 enforces using all skills now :P

Thanks for the info on my Rule 1 level. I didn't realise your solution was fiddly, because mine wasn't. I'll wait to see what Armani says about the level. If it turns out too many people say it's fiddly then I'll go back and put it back with the skillset I had. As long as it's solved this way then I'm fine with it.

ok wow, Intended solution is pretty much there for my Rule 1 level. No real backroutes this time, just Armani always finds a way to save skills. But i'm happy with his solution as it's 99% intended. so It seems I'll leave the level as is even if one doesn't  use all the skills, since other people may and I don't want to give Talismans since I don't like them.

You are correct in that your solution to my R3 is still a backroute. I have uploaded a V3 of it. Let's see if this stops your backrouting now :P Also hopefully it's now just as hard as my R1 or possibly even harder, as IMO my R3 is the hardest of all my contest entries.

Also I just wanted to comment on your solution to Icho's R1, as I pretested his contest entries. We have the same solution, I simply used the skills in a different order. Icho said that my solution was "95% intended." And yes, I agree with you that his R1 is hard.

Thanks again for playing my levels, Armani! I have definitely learned a lot in the process.

Also used all the skills. Possibly still a backroute though.

I knew that bevel would give me trouble!  V6 uploaded, but good try though. (TL:DR; it was a backroute!)

EDIT: I found a backroute of my own just now, so I had to re-upload V6 with a different fix.  I really hope that metal plate doesn't give me more problems than the bevel I tried!

ok, solved Willlem's Rule 1 See you on the other side.

this one is tricky at the beginning trying to get a lemming to fall down facing left and to the right of the wheel trap. rest of level is easy.
The builder trick at the far left making a wall to turn lemmings right is easy.

hey Kaywhyn, It looks like your Version 3 of Bubble trouble is again in need of a fix as I majorly backrouted it almost the same way as V1. I noticed it doesn't have steel anymore, only One way arrows.

anyways, here is my replay. Definitely you need to go to Version 4.

@eric Ugh, I was so focused on fixing the way you destroyed the end of the terrain that I totally neglected to check all possibilities of another skill to see if the intended route can still be bypassed :forehead: V4 of my R1 should finally fix your backrouting ways in this level and give you a huge struggle once more. It seems that everyone is telling me that my R1 is a hard level. Quite honestly, I'm surprised to hear this, but good to know that I'm just as capable of making hard levels! :P

ericderkovits and Armani pretty much got the same backroute on High Rise Hijinks, but it's not as bad as you might think and simply upping the release rate fixes it.  Immortal is also a backroute, and a bit fiddly to fix, but I did it! Uploaded new versions.

@Armani That's still a huge backroute to my R3. It's time to bring in the big guns. I have reduced the starting skillset even more by making a bunch of the skills pickups. This huge change from V3 to V4 is hopefully now enough to stop all your horrendous backrouting. There were some where I considered not making pickups, but I'm not taking any chances here less it causes backroutes to show up again. My hope is that my R3 is now the hard level it's supposed to be. I'm sure it's still not going to be a problem for someone like you, though. :P

Unfornately, Increasing the Release Rate from 90 to 95 didn't block the previous solution as I still pretty much did the same thing. Thus still is a backroute.

Looking through the topic, I found 3 replays for Interception; all three are different backroutes.

I found 2 replays for Chamber of Mummies; both are unintended, but they do at least seem interesting, if a bit easier than what I intended. I haven't decided if I'm going to patch these or leave it open ended yet.

@eric And, that's finally intended. Nice job!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What would you say about the difficulty of my R1? Did you think it was hard now that it's finally been properly patched up? If you think it was hard, then as mentioned before you're not the first one to tell me it's hard, as several people before you have told me that. Also, I think only one other person, Armani, has managed to solve it so far, and so you're pretty much the second person to have sent me a replay of R1, with the intended solution.

Nice job with steamrolling all the R1 levels! I think Icho's is the only R1 you have left to solve? I can tell you that it is hard, as I pretested all of his contest levels, but since you managed to solve my R1, then it should be a bit easier for you, since it uses something similar to my level. Since you're also a traditionalist, I knew right away that you would focus on the R1 levels and do all you can to solve them.

hi Kaywhyn. I think it's hard if you don't know these tricks. But because I've seen many tricks now or even used them in LOA, for me I say medium. That's what seeing many packs replays tricks do
And Like I said without seeing many tricks like these I wouldn't have even been able to beat Artlems or LOA.

And I solved every Rule 1 except Icho's. I already know that one would be just too hard for me, although havent really tried. Icho tends to make very difficult levels(just like in United).

Also I still backrouted cranes so waiting for an update again from him (he'll have to go to Version 8) since I backrouted his Version 7 the same as Version 6. His Increasing the Release Rate
made it more difficult but I still managed the same backroute.

That's a fairly accurate assessment. Indeed, the general consensus so far seems to be that my R1 is quite hard, although I should wait for more feedback on it and on my other two levels as well. Even then, I still think from easiest to hardest it's my R2, then R1, then R3. Although maybe R3 is only slightly harder than R1.

Quote
And I solved every Rule 1 except Icho's. I already know that one would be just too hard for me, although havent really tried. Icho tends to make very difficult levels(just like in United).

It's definitely a hard level, and I also struggled with it, although in the end I solved it much faster than both his R2 and R3. Almost similar to mine in size, small, but still deceptively hard. Even then, he's made some easy levels too :P From my pre-testing, though, I say all 3 were hard, although I think his R3 is the easiest even though it took me a while.

In the end, I do not blame you if you don't want to attempt the R2 and R3 levels, especially mine. I won't be offended in any way. R2 was a really hard rule to work with, although I struggled far more with making my R3, even though it's easier to work with than R2. I think for the time being both my R1 and R2 are fully backroute patched (who knows, they still might be backroutable), while it still remains to be seen with my R3. Hopefully V4 will be the final version of my R3, but we'll see.

My previous backroute to High Rise Hijinks still works on V5 and I found completely different solution to it too. So I attached both two.

I think this is better than before but I have some leftover skills on Immortal

I give up.  Why do I bother?  I have no idea how to patch High Rise Hijinks now.  It's too easy to time the Bomber so a Lemming can become a Blocker without anyone walking past.

Edit: I just played your version 8 of High Rise Hijinks in the editor. Still this version won't solve the problem. I still did the same backroute.

@Armani Nope, still a big backroute. The start is still not intended, and you correctly guessed that some parts after that aren't intended as well. All rightie, I have removed all builders and jumpers at the start, as well as move one of the cloner pickups. Let's see if this stops your backrouting now! :P

Now I think I know how you felt when I kept backrouting your levels in the previous contest. Looks like we have a lot in common :crylaugh:

I tried to come up with a backroute fix while taking a break outside, but applying it in the editor... it didn't work because it also blocks the intended solution, and it's not something that can be adapted.  High Rise Hijinks is broken (the talisman is also broken because the backroute completes it in under 3 minutes).

Well, the only way to unbreak High Rise Hijinks was to make the intended talisman solution the full intended solution - I found another solution that completes the level under the talisman rules, but it uses all the tools so is acceptable enough.

Note that I haven't reduced the time limit to 3 minutes, but I increased the save requirement from 48 to 49, which might be a bit confusing, but the talisman wasn't called "Technical details" for nothing.

Another option is to keep it at 48/50 and allow all the recent backroutes, but have the talisman be to save 49/50.

ok, solved cranes version 9 of High rise Hijinks.

Even though the save requirement is now 49 instead of 48, I still solved the level, even under 3 minutes.

Still think it's a backroute though as I had a miner and the bomber leftover(just used the nuke to end level)

So I still think this level is broken

We're finally getting closer to the intended solution. The beginning is almost 100% intended. There's still plenty of other parts after that that's still unintended. Luckily, this was a very quick change for V6. For this version, I took away 2 of the shimmiers at the start. I think this will finally give the intended solution. Give it a try and let me know.

Yes, it is frustrating, and I nearly thought my level was just broken and unfixable due to how you kept severely backrouting my R3. However, as I said in V5 we're getting quite close now. I simply kept holding on to hope that the intended solution I had in mind could still be enforced, and I think we're finally get it with V6 :P At the same time, it's a good thing in that at least people who play your levels can help you catch these backroutes that the designer somehow missed. This is where I thank you for your perseverance with the resolving and it has really helped me get better at fixing up levels each time. Not bad for someone where this contest is the first one where I have made my own levels! :crylaugh:

Nope to High Rise HighJinks.

A little bit more difficult. But still the same backroute.

I solved it in the editor. Still under 3 minutes too.

here is my version 10 replay which you can do in the editor or wait till Icho puts it in the pack.

EDIT: ok it's in the pack already.

@Armani Even though you used all skills (there's also one skill that you used that you could had spared in your solution), it's still a backroute. However, the start is about 98% intended. There's a few things after that that's still unintended. Even though the only change is steel was added, this should be the change that finally enforces the solution I had in mind, including the missing 2% at the start :P So I guess in a way the level's difficult but at the same time all the changes after the start kind of easily lead to the solution. Even then, I feel the level's still hard enough as is. You even stated that the level's getting quite difficult, which was what I wanted, since I still feel it's accurate to say that my R3 is the hardest of all my contest entries :P

Anyway, try V7 and let me know what you come up with this time. Thanks again for playing and helping me catch all these backroutes ;)

i can't apologise enough for my outbursts.  I'm just so frustrated that I can't get the level right and the same backroute keeps cropping up with some minor adjustments.  I promise it's no fault of the players and testers... they're just doing what they do best.

Version 12 of High Rise Hijinks still not fixed.

Here are 2 different but similiar backroutes.

Really think a new rule 1 level should be submitted as submitting this many attempts is just too many.

By now I think you could have had a better Rule 1 level already made.

Or as Icho mentioned on Discord embrace the backroute and integrate parts of it.

Ok, it seems like I need to crackdown on those backgrounds in R1 here as apparently people still used subtle backgrounds that I overlooked when assesing the levels in the first place.

And now other people are adding new backgrounds just becaused I missed one!

It would also be unfair to people who I told to remove backgrounds because those were not present in "traditional" lemmings if I would do nothing here.

So please could the following 2 levels be updated again with removed backgrounds:

- Crane's "High Rise Hijinks"
- Flopsy's "The Cooler Side of Hell"

Again it was a mistake by me in the first place not seeing them and preventing this in the first place.

Fine, okay.  But there's too many levels that have bent the rules a bit, like having one-way arrows that don't belong to the same tileset that's used in the rest of the level.  I guess i'm just frustrated on every level imaginable.

I want to say we have different values and think differently, but where have you had to embrace a backroute and sacrifice an intended solution almost completely?

..., but where have you had to embrace a backroute and sacrifice an intended solution almost completely?

Quite often. A bunch of levels in my packs were adjusted to adopt part of the backroutes or change up the intended solution.

Prime examples:

- "Rise Over Run" in United - intended solution was changed in large parts

- "Face Down And Pushing Through" in Reunion - backroute was made into the intended solution

- "Kiwi Knight's Keep" in United - intended solution was changed completely into something different

Believe me there are many more and I do this regularly when an intended solution cannot be enforced without allowing backroutes.

I think there's merits to both embracing a backroute and for patching them, depending on what the backroute is and what the intended solution was.

If you haven't already, I'm not aware of any rules banning asking for help debackrouting the level (i.e. post your intended solution replay and have someone else take a look and see what they can do to fix the backroutes) - if there is a rule against it, there's definitely precedent for letting it slide, as I've done it before publicly. Unfortunately, R1 blocks a lot of tools you can use to patch such backroutes, but do keep in mind you can always release a new version after the contest that uses those features.

On another topic, I don't see anything wrong with allowing the backgrounds. They weren't present in the original game, sure. But they don't affect gameplay, and there's backgrounds that are designed to fit in with the original sets included by default. Personally, I think it's a bit pedantic to disallow them.

@Armani The start is now 100% intended. After that, you're still backrouting the level terribly. It's interesting, considering that some of the skills after the start you had placed correctly in your previous solution, but this one just has a lot of incorrect or unintended skill placements. All rightie, I've added some OWAs to prevent what you did with releasing the crowd, as well as swapped the locations of the jumper pickup that has a quantity of 2 with the nearby platformer pickup. Fingers crossed this will finally enforce the solution I had in mind :P

A Rock and a Hard Place V2 solutions are still backroutes, but a little bit more on the right track ;) Might have to slightly tweak my solution to get a V3 fix working... although after testing, it actually allows the whole solution to flow much better so that's awesome.

Indeed, backroute again >:( I was actually in fear when I saw that you said you resolved my R3 that there would be another backroute, and indeed I have confirmed it to be so. However, the part on the very far left is now 100% intended, it's the parts after you use the teleporter where backroutes are still happening. For V9, I have added steel, so this will now hopefully be it. If this still doesn't stop your backrouting, I'm not sure what more I can do to enforce the solution I had in mind. :XD:

Hrm... all backroutes.  The first one is the same one that Eric keeps pulling off despite me not being skilled enough to do it myself - I can't work out what the secret is (can you reveal it to me?), although I can possibly see a way to prevent it now.  The second solution to High Rise Hijinks is an original backroute that will take quite some thought.

Immortal... hmmm... also more thought required.

All rightie, I've managed to solve all of the R1 levels. Here are my replays and my feedback. I pre-tested Icho's contest levels for the second time in a row, and once again it was quite an honor to do so. I've included my replay for his R1 level, so you may compare with mine if you wish. However, you might want to try and solve it on your own first. It is difficult, but I'm sure you lot are all capable of handling it :P Also, Icho said my solution is about 95% intended but was still deemed acceptable.

Sorry, but your solution is not the intended solution. Still a backroute.

So
1) I added 1 steel block
2) flipped the 3 rightmost left-facing OWWs to face right instead and extended the rightmost one all the way down.
3) added water

Armani (click to show/hide)

Also Armani, no worries if you can't watch the videos right now. I understand you're busy with school. More videos to come at a later time, since I still need to do the R2 and R3 levels.

@eric I think this is more or less intended now, even though I have some builders leftover. And yes, you're right about the old version being not that difficult. I realize that now due to me simply overthinking the solution in my mind. I was able to resolve this version much quicker, and for V3 it's simply the same solution as I did here, just where to bash needs to be lower when the OWAs were facing the wrong way. Again, LPing is a whole different ball game and honestly I think a psychological thing is at play here.

Also, I had a problem where a climber drowned when he was climbing the middle wall, as it appears that the trigger area of the quicksand is much higher/wider than it really is.

@Crane Nice find, but a backroute unfortunately. You got one of the tricks I intended, but it misses a couple of others, as well as doesn't use some of the level. Easy enough to fix, though. I have added steel above the sucker trap platform :P

I just noticed in the Update topic that Niesch has a Version 2 of his Take a Hike, but the updated level isn't in the pack according to the packs version list; still indicates it at
Version 1. So I think it got missed.

Got it included now. :)

I want to take this oportunity to sate again that the contest pack I am trying to maintain here is not a seal of approval for levels or a 100% nessesary part for the contest. Let's say I could just post the V1 of all levels in the first post here and then just let the update topic do its job. ;P

The pack is more of an optional offer by me to make it easy for players to get a copy of all levels in a roughly up-to-date version. I will try to maintain the pack and include updates that were posted in the update topic, but there is no guarantee that I will see/get everything right here or that I personally have time to update the pack in the same day.
As a result, if you want to have the most up-to-date version of the level be sure to double-check the update topic.

The pack is not mandatory for the contest at all and no official seal for up-to-date! It is still an optional offer, so be careful. :)

ok solved Niesch's Rule 1 version 2 level Take a Hike. Still not too difficult of a level.

Also I spent a lot of time on Icho's Rule 1 level as I wanted to be able to finish all the traditional levels (Rule 1) since I am a traditionalist when it comes to lemmings. Wow very difficult level(at least for me). but I managed to solve it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyways I now finished all The rule 1 levels. The only one not totally sure about is crane's level as he stated the backroute of his High Rise Highjinks doesn't seem to be able to be fixed, so I don't know his intended solution.

anyways here are the 2 final levels  replays that needed to be solved for Rule 1.

I still like Kaywhyn's level tricks the best I think in the Rule 1 set, even though it's a small level. Probably my favorite music in Rule 1 was Flopsy's "The cooler side of Hell"

And definitely the easiest level in Rule 1 was Silken Healer's Building Bridges. This level probably is on par with the middle to late Fun rank levels of the Original lemmings.

And I resolved all the updated levels

High Rise Hijinks : Again two replays attached. First one is slight variation of my previous backroute and second one is completely new solution. I'm not sure if this is intended or not.
Immortal : Now I spared only one builder. I think we are getting closer to the intended solution(hopefully ;))
Love-Hate Triangle : This seems promising :D I used every single skill this time ;)

@eric Nice job with Icho's R1 level  As you know, I pretested his contest levels. All of them are difficult in their own ways, although I agree with Armani's assessment that his R1 was probably the hardest of his levels in this contest, even though his R2 and R3 both each took me longer. Regarding your solution, you totally could had had both a climber and a floater to spare :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Compare to my solution where I was less efficient and ended up using all skills but I did what I told you in the spoiler above.

I still like Kaywhyn's level tricks the best I think in the Rule 1 set, even though it's a small level.

Glad you liked my R1 level! Your R1 was nice as well, even though it gave me problems but only because I kept overthinking it :crylaugh:

Quote
And definitely the easiest level in Rule 1 was Silken Healer's Building Bridges. This level probably is on par with the middle to late Fun rank levels of the Original lemmings.

Definitely an easy level. I thought The Tomato Watcher's level was very easy as well. The hardest R1 levels for me is either Crane's or Icho's, the former only because I can't solve it the intended way and can only solve with a backroute.

@Armani Finally, your solution to my R3 is intended. Great job! It might have taken 9 versions, but it's finally completely patched up :crylaugh: It should now be the hardest of my contest levels, with my R1 possibly even more or a close second for hardest.

On the flip side, your R2 is the only level I can't solve. So, after not being able to solve it after 2 videos, I will hopefully get it solved off-camera. And I've already spent at least 2 hours off-camera with it and still no luck :( I know you posted hints, but I dare not peek at them, as I like to figure it out for myself :P

I've also had an attempt at your R3 on camera, but I haven't been able to solve that one yet. I'm going to try and see if I can solve the other R3 levels first before I come back to yours ;)

Yep, it's was a long journey but we finally made it. Now let's hope Icho won't backroute your R3 again ;P

Since last LDC(CONTEST#21), I set some rules on my self when designing contest levels. For rule1, I try to design traditional-type of level.(I used brick tileset last time and dirt this time) Also, I found out that my rule1 level is always the first level of the entire pack, so I tend to make it not so difficult. And for rule2, I've made levels to showcase some new(at least for me) tricks, which will be helpful when you play my future pack. So usually these levels are quite hard at first, but will be simple when you realize the tricks I want to teach.(my level 'Horent Flight' from the last contest is an example; after you realize the shimmier-stoner trick, the level is nothing) Finally for rule3, I've deliberately tried to design tricky levels without advanced or fancy tricks.

So... good luck with the remaining levels. I believe you'll make it.

Or anyone for that matter if they happen to play my R3 :P It was getting frustrating for some time, but let's just say that I took baby steps in fixing up my R3. With each subsequent update, I pretty much fixed one backroute at a time, but while doing so I neglected to fix a backroute in another area. This I consider ok when first starting out, especially since keep in mind that these three contest levels of mine are my very first lemmings levels I have ever made. I didn't think I was capable of designing a lemmings level, let alone ones that are contest worthy, but I apparently have underestimated myself :crylaugh:

Nice insightful info into your general contest design. It's nice to set guidelines for oneself so that you know exactly what you're trying to aim for. If you must know, for my R1 there were two tricks in there that I knew I wanted to make a level out of, and so that's how my R1 happened. Of course, as you saw, I threw in a third one on top of that for good measure ;) In addition, I knew I wanted it to be a bubble level, since that tileset is one of my favorites. For all my contest levels, though, the general plan was pretty much start putting things together and hope that a great level comes out of them. This was especially true for both my R2 and R3. For my R3, I originally wanted to use the Renaissance tileset and use one-time traps, but I saw that the tileset doesn't have one-time traps. However, while playing your R2, I totally forgot about the spikes which are. Even then, what I had in mind wasn't going to work. So ultimately, I went with the brick tileset, which is another favorite of mine from ONML. Before this, I think I wanted to do it in the wasteland tileset since it does have the mines as one-time traps, but I couldn't really think of a way to make an interesting level out of this. I might be able to in the future, but for the time being, the brick one is what you see for this contest :P

Out of my 3 entries, I had a very hard time coming up with a level title for my R3. One of the titles was going to be very similar to what you went with for your R3, except I couldn't think of anything that goes well with "the good, the bad" :crylaugh: Even the title I ultimately went with I really don't like either, but I can't really think of anything better for it. I guess in a way it does kind of resemble a triage in the form of a triangle if you noticed what I did with the structure at the bottom.

Quote

So... good luck with the remaining levels. I believe you'll make it.

Thanks for the encouragement! I hope I can solve your R2 and R3 too. I'm probably just overthinking your R2, but then again I understand it's supposed to be hard. I'll keep in mind with what you said above with your general process of making R2 levels with a trick that once discovered then the rest is easy and see if that will help.

I think what I will do is record one more attempt at your R3 and if I can't solve it, then again same story as R2 in that I will try and solve it off-camera. Even then, your R3 is the only level in that group I have left to solve, and I've only recorded one video attempting it so far. Because of this, I will make an exception to the 20-25 minutes max rule I allow myself before moving on to the next contest level if I can't solve it in that timeframe. Makes sense, because the only levels I have left to solve in this contest are your R2 and R3, so therefore I can afford to record a much longer attempt on camera, even if it takes upwards close to an hour or so.

After this, I will upload the remaining videos. I will simply upload my success for your R2 at a later time. Also, I didn't want the fact that I couldn't solve your R2 to delay my recordings of solving the R3 levels. So, what's going to happen is that I will upload the 4 parts of the R2 levels, followed by the 3 parts of the R3 levels, and then I simply upload part 5 of the R2 levels whenever I solve your R2. Similarly for uploading part 4 of the R3 levels at a later time if it ever gets to that.

I hope you enjoyed my contest levels as well. Thanks for playing and the replays! Again, I have definitely learned a lot in regards to level making/level fixing.

I've looked at all of the R2 and R3 levels, so I'm back with more replays attached and LP videos to all the levels except for Armani's R2 and R3, as I still need more time to solve them. However, I wasn't going to delay the uploading of my LP videos due to them, as I wanted to see the rest of the levels. So, I will upload Part 5 of the R2 levels and Part 4 of the R3 levels once I'm able to solve both of his levels off-camera.

My replays also include solutions to Icho's R2 and R3 levels. As you all know, I pretested them, so you may compare my solutions to them. However, once again, I urge you to give them both a try and attempt to solve them :P They're both difficult, but I'm sure you lot can handle them. I really like his R3 the best out of his contest levels. As for the video LPs, I haven't shown my solution to Icho's R2, but I will do that in the next video I upload once I solve Armani's R2. In the meantime, there's the replay file you can use to see it ;)

Overall, for some reason I felt the R3 levels were easier than the R2 ones. Probably because I solved the R3 ones somewhat faster. Not to mention there's one less R3 level I played than R2 since I didn't need to play either Icho's (I pretested) or my own :P Also, though the R1 levels only use the classic 8 skills, they were definitely some of the best contest levels I've seen. I say the overall difficulty of the R1's were in the middle, so in between R3 and R2, with the R2 the hardest ones IMO. I think there's universal consensus that R2 was the most difficult to work with when designing for the rule, but most of them turned out to be difficult. Armani's R2 is the hardest for me, as that is the one that I have not yet managed to solve while the rest I have.

As for my levels, I will show off the intended solutions to them once I can solve both of Armani's R2 and R3 and near the end of the playing phase. Sorry for the disappointment :P

Your solution to my Rule 2 is an acceptable variant as even Armani had a few skills left. I'm leaving this one open-ended as I consider it the easiest of the 3 contest levels, even though you thought
it was challenging. Actually I didn't spend to much time on creating this level to get an exact solution so I'm fine with your solution.

@Armani Ok, I have posted my replay/video of my solution to your R3V1. I'm well aware that your R3 is currently up at V3, and so I will need to resolve your R3, but I simply wanted to show you the solution I found to your R3V1 last night, meaning the replay I attach here is the second solution I show off in the video. The solutions are identical anyway, the only difference being one skill swapped out for another. I checked, and both of the V1 replays break for V3.

Also link to the video LP:

I still need to think more about your R2. At least I can still put up Part 4 of the R3 video regardless of whether R2 is solved or not. It's definitely a nailbiter. The part before the end is quite mind-boggling :XD:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

@rtw I've also resolved your R1 and R3 levels. The solution to Warmth R1V2 should be intended now, and if so still a nice level and quite easy, but I'm sure my solution still isn't intended for Crazy Eights R3V2 since I don't use any of the pickup skills :P

@Armani Finally solved your R2. Wow, it's a hard one, but I really like the solution. It's quite clever! Stumped me the longest out of any of the other contest levels, but I managed to figure it out without anything major spoiled. I read the hint spoilers you posted from a few days ago, and yea, I think you did fine there even though you said you're not good at giving hints :P

Anyway, here's my replay for your R2, as well as the link to the video LP

Video LP link:

Rule 2 Part 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5db1Lp-Csoo

I also show my solution to Icho's R2 in the video. I've attached the replay solution here in the topic last time, but I'm re-attaching it here for convenience so that you may compare if you already played and solved it (remember, I pre-tested Icho's contest levels). However, while explaining my solution, I got quite confused as to what happened at the end when no one exited even after all buttons were pushed. Upon further investigation, when I played back the video, for some very odd reason when I loaded my replay, it appears that all the exits showed up as unlocked. Not to mention the exit unlock sound didn't even play. Yet, despite being shown unlocked since the beginning of the replay, no one can exit even after the buttons were pushed.

Exiting out to the post-results screen and then entering the level again fixed it. Not sure why this happened ???

All rightie, with all contest levels finally solved at least once, I'm taking a break from solving these. I will be back with 1 final video each for each of the 3 contest rules where I will simply show off my solutions to the most up-to-date versions of each level, as well as the intended solutions to each of my contest levels. In the meantime, I will solve the most up-to-date version of each contest level off camera and then record the videos near the end of the playing phase ;)

@Armani Yay! I have to suspect either because no one else has played your R2, or if they have, they're not able to solve it yet. I definitely can see why, though. It's a hard one but luckily it doesn't require anything too obscure. I already know the tricks needed, I just couldn't spot one of them for a really long time because of how I found it hard to wrap my head around some things that happen in the level no matter what. The first trick I've seen a few times already, and plus that one's very easy to work out. The second trick I'm aware of, it just escaped me for a very long time due to how it hasn't really been seen in any level absolutely requiring/enforcing it completely. Luckily, I was able to stumble upon the second trick needed eventually on my own. It's a nice one, though.

Once again, great job with R2 :)

See Crane, I told you, you had a 1% difference in your solution to Armani's Rule 3 level.

Also solved WillLem's Rule 2 level (Lemminas in the Power Plant oder man sagt auf Deutsch Lemminas im Kraftwerk).

I really brute forced your level there WillLem, used every skill but 3 gliders. I think I should get a Talisman for this one. HaHa!!!

ok, solved Kaywhyn's Rule 2 level. Your right Kaywhyn this one was pretty easy. Although you had a little more trouble with my Rule 2 level, which I also thought was the easiest of my contest levels.

I liked the colorfulness of the level and the tune was better than the ohno one in your Rule 1. I think the tune matched the level quite good.

@eric Intended solution  You were just slightly less efficient in regards to the amount of time taken, but it's fine. The tricks are all there in the solution, and it's pretty much the only solution thanks to the pickups :P

Although you had a little more trouble with my Rule 2 level, which I also thought was the easiest of my contest levels.

As I said in reply to your Youtube comment, you underestimate the difficulty of your R2 when it comes to others solving it. It is understandable, since it's difficult for authors to judge how hard his/her own levels are when others are solving them. While I am in agreement that your R2 is likely the easiest of all your levels in this contest relative to one another, it doesn't necessarily mean that your R2 itself is easy. Only "easiest" comparatively speaking to your other contest levels. There are things that do make it more difficult than usual: Wide level, somewhat a wide array of possibilities to try, number of objects you need to interact with, etc.

Thanks for the compliment on the design! :) I admit that my R2 is quite a sloppy design and it was frustrating getting the placements correct so that the solution works out, but I think it's because I'm more annoyed with wanting to enlarge the level size and shift the positions of everything in the level. Guess I just need to fiddle around in the editor more in this regard :crylaugh: Then again, I did put the level together in the final days before the playing phase began, so I can only blame myself for that, because my sloppiness in the design certainly shows. I was never an artist, though, and I'm still not. I cannot draw anything for goodness sakes :(

Proxima's: space and honeycomb tile set mixes. also 2 hidden bee traps. Not too difficult of a level. I did have a jumper left which I ended up nuking. So not sure if he can be saved.

RTW's: Easy level: alot of stacking to get to button. colorful purple level.

Ok, Now I finished the final rule 3 level. Kaywhyn's The Love-Hate Triangle.

Wow alot of pickups in this level. Think it kinda helped though as not too many options to do, so it not only, I think, forces the intended solution but also kinda gives it away.

At first it looked intimadating but due to so many pickups, it wasn't super difficult. (I guess having this many pickups in the level was because Armani kept backrouting it).

I notice when there are alot of pickups in packs, it kinda gives solutions away, but also helps with backroutes.

So as far as the your 3 LDC levels, to me from easiest to hardest were

1) Rule 2 (liked this music the best of the 3)
2) Rule 3 (liked the design the best of the 3)
3) Rule 1 (liked the tricks used the best of the 3)

It took me probably the longest to actually do your Rule 1 once it got patched, due to a few tricks in the level(also due to no pickups-which does sometimes give solutions away)

@eric Your solution is 100% intended. Nice job! Yes, I had a feeling that with all the pickups that are in the level that it would make it easier than usual. However, at some point, because Armani kept backrouting the level so much I kind of was "screw it, I'm not going to take any more risks by not making more skills pickups." IMO, the intended solution is just too cool to adapt any other. I really love the sense of urgency at the very beginning, and I'm quite amazed that I was able to figure out the right number of lemmings to provide nearly on my first attempt too before the start becomes a problem and the solution wouldn't work. 20 was just the right amount split among 5 entrances and the 3 preplaced lemmings. I also like how you can get the same number of lemmings for each exit.

However, now that you mentioned it, I might be able to return it to its former difficulty by removing some pickups and applying other fixes. I'll need to think about it some more, or if I decide it's not worth the hassle, I'll just leave it be, particularly since it's always risky to revert changes after the intended solution has finally been enforced in the most recent version.

Wow, that's awesome that I managed a separate "best" category for each of my contest levels in your view. I think so far the only replays I've gotten are from you, Armani, and Crane. I've also gotten replays from Flopsy (for R1) and WillLem (R2), but they were unfortunately backroutes. Because of this, I actually don't have too much data/info on the difficulty of my levels, especially my R2 and R3. So far, everyone's saying that my R1 is a hard level, but that's because more people have tried my R1 than my other two contest levels so far. I definitely be happy if others can play my levels, as I'm always looking for ways to improve, particularly since these are the very first levels I have ever made. Of course, I understand how busy everyone else, and hence there's no rush to get to these levels ASAP. Really all I (or any of us, really) can hope for is that people play them and send/give me replays/feedback, but no one is forced to play any of these levels.

Thanks again for playing, the replays/feedback, and for your kind words/compliments!

Ok. Final level of the LDC #22 finally solved

Armani's rule 2 level. This one was the hardest level of any to find the solution. Still WillLem's rule 2 level is the hardest one though since the level is huge and requires so much time to solve.
Luckily though his level furnished plenty of skills(although I used every one except for 3 gliders.)

here's how I figured how to solve Armani's Rule 2 level.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now I'm awaiting for both Icho to solve the contest levels and when Kaywhyn is ready, to resolve a few of the levels(ie Armani's rule 3, Flopsy's rule 2 Level,  and Crane multi version(No.18-wow so many attempts) Rule 1 level).

Armani's rule 2 level. This one was the hardest level of any to find the solution.

Definitely. There's a lot of things that fail by a pixel or more, but really the hardest part is just a trick that, at least for me, hasn't been seen all that much and hence it took me a really long time to come up with it, especially since it was difficult for me to wrap my head around a few things that happen in the level no matter what. It's somewhat obscure as well.

I haven't seen your solution, but based on the very little skills you had left you really overcomplicated it. WillLem pointed out to me that the restarts I did were absolutely unnecessary, as there was one section in my solution where I could had saved a lot of skills on top of the many I had left.

It's also interesting that you thought WillLem's R2 was the hardest. As you might had guessed, none in this contest were really difficult for me except for both Armani's R2 and R3. These two were the last levels I solved out of everything else, with his R2 taking the longest because it stumped me for a while.

I'm flattered that you would like me to resolve the most recent versions of the contest levels, but don't worry too much about me or how others are doing in regards to playing the contest entries. There's a couple of others in addition to the ones you named that I need to resolve anyway :P I simply decided to take a break from the contest levels after solving every level at least once. I will come back to them in due time.

Solved and uploaded the rest today. :)

There is a little bit of edited/dumbed down sound in part 6 as 1 level used a copyrighted track from Steven Universe that YouTube really did not like. As a result it got blocked in some countries and I needed to resort to the "automated track removal" function. I think it was "Immortal" that had the problematic track.

Please make sure in the future that your tracks are not copyrighted - or give a warning that I can turn off the music. :)

EDIT:

Regarding that music track - It could be less of an copyright issue and more a "these countries don't like that show" issue
because the block was for countries like "Iran, North Korea,..... "

and I know that that show has homosexual characters and those countries are not that open for it :P
So maybe they just block everything from that show.

EDIT 2: Reuploaded part 6 with the mute.

Here are the parts:

perfectly fine solutions to my rule 2 and rule 3 levels

Rule 2 open-ended(many possible solutions, so ok with Icho's)
Rule 3 again good solution(although Icho took around 15 mins, had 3 skills left)
actually Kaywhyn's solution was the most efficient of the solutions-saving 5 skills and around 9 and a half minutes)
Armani's solution was the least efficient(saved only 1 skill and around 10min)
my solution saved 2 skills and like Kaywhyn took about 9 and a half minutes

@IchoTolot Slight backroute to my R2, but very easy fix. Your solution to my R3 is intended. I'm still in disbelief and amused that I managed to stump the great IchoTolot with one of my levels :P Whoa, happened a lot sooner than I thought. All it took was just 3 levels of mine :crylaugh: Great job on getting all of my contest levels solved, though, even if I was chuckling at your overthinking and overcomplicating of my R3

@Ichotolot

Placing blocker right next to exit trigger area and bashing him out later is not intended. But that's a clever trick! I like that. I smoothen the terrain near the exit so you cannot bash out the blocker anymore.

Your solutions to my other levels are 100% intended  well done

Similar to Ichotolot's backroute. Now I smoothen the terrain near the exit ;)

Back with replays of some resolved levels.

Levels I needed to resolve:

Armani's "Childhood Dreams" R1V3 and "The Good, The Bad, and The Weird" R3V7 - I had the intended solution for the former already, but unfortunately the update broke my replay, so I had to do it again.

Your R3 needs fixing again, as I totally backrouted it :P

Crane's "Immortal" R3V12 - I think this might be a backroute as well :P Just slightly harder, although I must say that was super close before the regular lemming got infected :crylaugh: It really looked like he should be, though.

I still need to resolve your R1. It has me stumped. I will try again later.

eric's "Come Home Lemmings" R1V5 - It's definitely more challenging now, though I admit I was very annoyed at the tight timing needed for the end part. Kind of doesn't help that I was resolving contest levels on my birthday  Not your fault at all. I'm guessing RR changes would had made my life easier.

Niesch's "Take A Hike" R1V2 - Apparently even a slight shift in the terrain was enough to break my replay. I think this time my solution is only slightly different than the one I found in the first version. In any case, not that much harder than before.

Shmolem's "Climb the Water Tower" R1V2 - I attached two replays. First one I save everyone, while the second one it is possible to completely ignore one entrance. In any case, both should be backroutes, as you mentioned that going underneath is not intended :P

Flopsy's "Let's play some games" R2V3 - Slightly harder now. Maybe still a backroute, though?

RE: Kaywhyn
perfect solution to my rule 1 contest level. Yeah and you got all the tricks I wanted to see with the blockers (you also used all the skills). I noticed though the top builders should have been placed a
tiny bit lower though as it seemed the basher barely was able to bash the top builder steps.
Yes this level is harder now because of the timing needed. But in the previous versions, people just found this level way too easy especially with saving so many skills.

That's why I said I believe my Rule 2 level was the easiest, especially because it has many solutions.

And, Crane's R1 finally solved. Replay attached. Wow, that's quite a clever solution. Not super precise and unfair at all.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All rightie, will wait for possibly future updates to some levels before I record the final videos showing off the solutions to these levels, as well as the intended solutions to my contest levels in about a week or so. I know there's still a few that need fixing.

Regarding which level I think is the hardest, despite how Crane's R1 was the last contest level I solved, I will also have to say that Armani's are by far much harder. Yes, Crane's R1 is hard, but that's because it has the appearance of an extremely deceptive small and simple level where a lot of things I tried all don't work because you will always end up a skill short. In contrast, Armani's R2 and R3 both gave me far more problems. I unfortunately backrouted his R3V7 :P

RE: Kaywhyn
I noticed though the top builders should have been placed a
tiny bit lower though

Indeed, it can sometimes be difficult to judge when to place the top builders for the ceiling check, particularly since the basher checks work differently depending on what engine you're playing on. In my solution, there was only one possible position for it to work, whereas if they were lower there would had been far more leeway. However, that wasn't my main gripe. The timing just before dropping off the final wall and walking to the exit was the bigger annoyance, since I ended up restarting and having to adjust it so many times. Again, I think I could had made it easier on myself had I done some RR changes.

congrats, Kaywhyn on finally solving Cranes rule 1 level.

Yes, also it's a shame that Armani's Rule 3 level is still not fixed, as I saw you backroute of it, because the intended solution is a special one. It took me 7 versions though to get the intended solution. Icho actually loved his rule 3 level. Of course he solved it quickly as usual and also as intended.

Also spoiler for my Rule 1 level
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As usual, you misunderstood what I meant by "timing." I wasn't referring to the builders, nor has it ever referred to that whenever I solved this level, as they are not what makes the level difficult. It's referring to the two skills you mentioned in the spoiler :P Check carefully what I quoted. That's the hardest part of the level and comes at the end. My remark is on the placement of the builders to help with the basher checks. Also to avoid any doubt, by the final wall I'm referring to the OWW platform area just before falling onto the steel platform where the exit is.

Anyway, I realized a really easy way to do the timing, but I'm not going to bother at this point to submit more replays/solutions for your R1 since you said it's intended. I simply made it harder on myself than I needed to.

@Armani Resolved R3V8. Admittedly, I watched Icho's video right after I solved the previous version (long before this updated version came) and therefore it was a quick resolve. At the same time, I realized that I was quite close in some of my very early attempts even in V1, although I think those were off-camera attempts, so it's not like I wouldn't had been able to figure it out. In addition, some things I've tried in both V7 and this one come very close to working but you end up a skill short.

Anyway, since I couldn't backroute this version, I think we can now say all your levels are patched up :P

I solved Dullstar's rule 1 level

I streamed this tonight and I plan on going through the whole pack eventually. I probably won't stream tomorrow night, but perhaps Friday or Saturday

I'm simply playing through the pack in order, except for Proxima's level which I skipped to cause he was watching.
Rewatching I see the game volume is inaudible, I'll try to fix that.

Looks like the update and playing times are almost up. only a handful of people it seems have even played or attempted the levels.

I think only Icho, and Kaywhyn resolved my Rule 1 level. Crane and Armani played the level but haven't resolved it.

And only Icho, Kaywhyn and Armani played and solved my Rule 2 and 3 levels. Nobody else even attempted those 2 levels.

Of course I played them All and solved them all. Although Crane isn't satisfied with his Rule 3 level still.

Crane's R3V17 resolved.

edit: I checked your intended solution, and yea that is quite a complicated one to enforce. My solution I attached for your V17 is nearly similar to what I did before for V16, where I simply outpaced the zombie. I still use all the skills, but I end up using the builders in a different place. However, instead of sending out the climber immediately, I did the waiting game before doing so and then everything is nearly the same as before.
