The Lemmings quiz thread!

Just a bit of forum fun this. Basically, I'll start with a quiz-style question about lemmings, and the next person to post must answer it, and provide a question of their own. So if I ask "What colour is the hair of a lemming?", the next person should answer "Green", and below their answer they would ask a different question. The subject has to be Lemmings related obviously, but it can be with any game in the franchise (Including spin off's like Lomax), or even the creation of the games... Just as long as it's related somehow.
 
Of course, there's the slight chance that someone may answer incorrectly. If you notice this, just point it out, and state what you think is the correct answer with a question to boot. If there's three incorrect answers, then the original person must reveal the answer and then post a different question.

Slight correction: the Mac version also has "Going Their Separate Ways". (I didn't know the level was on another version too.......)

This is a guess, so I'll wait for confirmation, but is it We are now at LEMCON ONE and its "copy"?

But anyway...... the date was 14 February 1991..... I don't know what's "special" about that, other than being Valentine's Day; is that what you meant?

Now, my next question: Which is the only Lemmings level to have a hyphen in its title?

"Lemmings" as in Lemmings 1 Amiga version? &#A0;I checked the list of levels at home.wanadoo and none from Lemmings have hyphens [smiley=huh.gif], but when ONML is included there are at least 2 from Tame alone. &#A0;And if we are including other versions (eg. Genesis etc.), how many other versions have you played to be sure that there aren't hyphenated levels in some version you didn't play?

Bomber only levels: &#A0;Diet Lemmingaid, Bomboozal

Another fairly easy one:

There are two levels in (Amiga) lemmings in which you can make someone a blocker, but there is no way to do so and be able to free the blocker later short of nuking. &#A0;"Tailer-Made for Blockers" is one. &#A0;Name the other one?

I guess the answer to your question is "Save me"...I don't see how you can save those blockers over there.

Oops, my answer was wrong. &#A0;But so is yours. ;)

I guess I wasn't clear, I don't mean saving all blockers, and it doesn't even have to solve the level. &#A0;I'm more aiming towards skills given. &#A0;The criteria is that no matter where and how in the level you set up a blocker, you cannot free the blocker without nuking the level. &#A0;In "Save Me", you can do it by making a lemming build a few bricks, then turn him to a blocker, and later bash away the pixels to free him. &#A0;In fact it's used for the various lose-3 solutions for that level.

No, not Taxing 16, because you can blow up a walker close to the blocker to free him.

Here's a rephrasing of the question in case people still find it too confusing as stated (highlight to read):

In ONML, turns out that except for Tame, every rating each has exactly one level that has more than one exit, making for 4 multi-exit levels. &#A0;Name them.

Wild 9, Ice Station Lemming, though the backroute only works in some versions (not Mac, for instance).

(And the answer to ccexplore's earlier question was Tricky 8 -- Lemming sanctuary in sight. Cunning question.)

Q: "Diet Lemmingaid" is the Lemmings level with the fewest total skills, just 2 bombers. What's the second fewest?

If I remember correctly, it's in the Space Tribe with the droid that shoots the lemmings with its machinegun. Am I right?

Oh, just a note: Is it possible to look at external websites for the answers? Because, even you would say "No!", you can't see me watching the other websites and that way: no proof. I suppose that, for the fun and for the intention of the game, it is better not to look at these websites, right?

But it's not a computer of any kind.

On the other hand, I didn't know the Adventure Gamebooks was based on Lemmings 2 rather than 1.

What exactly are they anyway?  Do they really even qualify as a version of Lemmings 2 as we normally know it?  How the heck could you play Lemmings 2 on a book? :o

In Amiga Lemmings, one of the music tracks for levels feature spoken English words. &#A0;Name one level using that track and give one of the spoken words.

I'm afraid not; "Ozone friendly lemmings" is a Tricky level.

As to your question, Tetris is usually considered a puzzle game (though I don't see it myself -- it certainly involves strategy and tactics, but there's no actual puzzle element......) so the answer would be "LEMTRIS" from Lemmings 2.

If I remember right, which I might not, Compression Method 1 has no builders. Or at least mentally going through the Taxing set, it's the only other level I can think of that wouldn't require builders (or a glitch).

Havoc 12. I remember the number but not the name (something about timing or something), and you get 12 builders.

I'll edit in my question when I think of it.

EDIT: Ok, here goes.

Refering back to that same Taxing set of what I presume is Amiga Lemmings, name the only level of this set whose minimum release rate is exactly equal to the sum of all tasks assigned to you to solve the level.

Tough call, but that would be "Triple Trouble" -- 10 of each skill, RR 80.

And can you name the only other level on the game with the same property?

That would be "You need bashers this time", 50 bashers and a 50 release rate. I apologize for my wrong answer earlier, but it's not too difficult to mix up two words beginning with the same letter :P

Isn't there a level in the Present set called "Everyone turn left" or something like that which only gives you one blocker? I've never played Genesis Lemmings, but I remember seeing something weird like that. I think it's Present 4, not sure, though.

You know, I'm not sure if Insane Steve really considers that as punishment. ;)

Anyhow, name of Fun 2 is "Only Floaters can Survive This".

Ok, my question:

In (Amiga) Lemmings, there are 3 pairs of consecutive levels with the following properties:

1) Both levels in the pair are in the same rating.
2) Both levels in the pair are repeated in the same later (harder) rating.
3) The repeats themselves are consecutive levels, in the same order.

Name one such pair (I'm being kind ;)), identifying names of both instances of the 2 levels.

Furthest, I think, is Mayhem 20 (No added colours or lemmings), Away from Fun 4 (A task for miners and climbers).

Closest... Is a bit harder. Running mentally through the levels, I think the answer is some WAFD level. ... I think the two closest are WAFD Taxing (Taxing 30) and WAFD Mayhem (Mayhem... 11?).

That said, I am unsure of the latter (or if you count the WAFD levels in that assessment), so I'ma wait for confirmation of how correct it is before I pose a question.

Entirely correct (though I think, if I remember rightly, that on the Mac version at least, the Mayhem WAFD is coded as a copy of the Tricky one, and the Taxing one of the Fun one.... but that's only something you'd know by hacking into the game, so for the purposes of the question you may ignore it!)

I was hoping someone would try to answer with Mayhem 16 and Mayhem 27 -- they're just as close (11 levels apart) but aren't strictly "repeats" &#A0;:P &#A0;but you managed to avoid falling into that trap.

I ran backwards through the Mayhem set (To figure out the longest part) and never did I think of Just a Minute 2 vs. Just a Minute 1. Then again, I know about the difference: It ruined my orginal solution to the first Just a Minute.

Ok, new question:

Not counting the WAFD levels, there are (I believe) 4 levels in Amiga Lemmings that require you to use every task given to you in order to pass the level. None of these are in the Taxing set -- name at least one of these levels in each of the other three sets.

From the condition, it's obvious that for levels to have the same music they must be a multiple of 17 levels apart. So, one example is 6 Tricky (Lemmingology) and 10 Taxing (Izzy Wizzy Lemmings Get Busy), which are 34 levels apart.

Technically what you said is impossible due to the NES version.  In the NES version, the digger does not dig down in a gradual, pixel-row-by-pixel-row manner, so a walker always fall either from the top or bottom of the platform, not in between.  Of course, in the NES version of Fun WAFD, you're given all sorts of other skills so you don't even need diggers, but a solution that works on "any" version will necessarily have to be restricted to diggers only.

So let's modify the question slightly and say, um, "a solution that works on any version with 'normal' (ie. Amiga-like) game mechanics". ;)

Increase the release rate to the extent that there is a slight gap between each lemming. When they get fairly far on the platform (Possibly to the edge to be on the very safe side), start from the right making every one in two lemmings dig. The non-digging lemmings will land on the digger's work, but as they begin to walk they'll fall as the platform gives way.

It's actually possible with only five or so, but from what I've seen it is just a case of setting the RR to 99 and making random lemmings dig.

Anyway, I've had enough of these level questions (Variety guys :P), so let's change it all just that little bit.

Q.What was the earliest Lemmings game to be released which could be played without a mouse?

I know the PC (DOS) version can be played w/o a mouse.  I'm not sure about the Amiga and Atari ST version.  I also know the release order for those 3 is Amiga first, then Atari ST then PC.  I would guess Atari ST is the answer?

Well, your question just says "describe", so who's to know you want an actual release rate.

I'll answer for Jazzem.  RR 35 should suffice.  I'm purposely picking a low RR because some versions don't let you change the RR instantaneously, and I'm try to fit Jazzem's description which seems to only adjust the RR once at the beginning.

After some sketching and trying out on the Amiga emulator last night, I was unable to find an alternate solution for the level that would work on the Amiga, so looks like the correct answer to Insane Steve's question will remain unchanged.

Nope.  Although the SNES version does indeed have different music for the Classics Tribe than the Amiga, the SNES version is still based off of Lemming 1 (namely, track 13 in the jukebox).

Ok, I thought of another question, hopefully much easier (to know and to guess), which has the same answer as the answer I am thinking for the old question above.  So I'll phrase my new question as follows:

Give a version of Lemmings 1 for which there are more than 21 possible music for the levels (so music outside the levels do not count).  Restrict answers to those platforms that also have a port of Lemmings 2.

This can be hard when you aren't sure whether you even know all theversions of Lemmings 2 out there!

Well a good place to start is to switch "Archimedes" with "Acorn" :P

I'm a little confused though, how would Lemmings 2 work with a password system? You've got the various tribes, and not to mention the amount of lemmings that are carried over...

If I recall correctly, the passwords are tribe-specific, and the password opens up levels 1 thru X of tribe Y with so-and-so many lemmings left.

Or maybe it's just a password given to you when you complete all 10 levels, so the next time you can usethe password to unlock all 10 levels.  I really don't remember since I always use emulator savestates instead.  I'll have to replay that version and see.  It most likely doesn't retain as much info as you'd like.

I just looked up the codes for Genesis Lemmings 2 on Gamefaqs and it looks like they are simply a password to unlock all 10 levels of a tribe, for each of the 12 tribes. &#A0;So there is no save in terms of your performance on individual levels.

But note this: &#A0;a password on that version is 22 letters long! &#A0;Even if we assume for ease of programming that each letter is only 16 possibilities, you still end up with more than 3*10^22 (3 with 22 trailing zeros) combos! &#A0;In contrast, with 60 lemmings and 10 levels, even a naive bound of 61^10 is only about 7*10^17 (7 with 17 trailing zeros). &#A0;(The bound is just combo of 10 numbers from 0 to 60, which is a gross overestimate because most combos will add up to more than 60.) &#A0;This means a random guess would only hit a valid password roughly 1 out 50000 times. &#A0;In short, even though the Genesis doesn't seem to support it, it is probably quite possible to come up with a simple-to-compute (for the computer) and "secure" password system that would serve as a save for your performance on a particular tribe.

Also, now that I think of it, there's no reason to restrict to 16 rather than 26 letters, which only vastly expands the total number of possible passwords.  It might be helpful for programming to assume that the performance combo is 64^10 instead of 61^10, but the slightly increase there is obviously outdone by going to 26 letters.

Actually, the main theme of #16 is "Ten Green Bottles", not "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" (or Incey Wincey, as we call it this side of the pond). The second one is, as Insane Steve said, the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin. No idea about the third.

For Insane Steve's question: 3 Havoc "It's the price you have to pay". (The last of all is "Flow Control". And I didn't look it up.)

Q: Which one (name and number please) of the Genesis/Megadrive unique levels has the same title as an Amiga Lemmings level with a different layout?

Ah..... I hadn't recognised that as being a separate "theme" from the Bridal Chorus, which was silly of me. What I meant by the third part was the bit right at the end when it just goes oom-pah oom-pah oom-pah..... but on second listen that's not a new theme, that's Ten Green Bottles stripped of its characteristic rhythm.

The spike traps in the Columns set as seen in Taxing 4 seems like a good candidate.  I'll again make a guess of 8 frames.

For reference, 8 frames is the amount of time between the digger's strokes.

Well, I do; it's hard not to after all the work I did sequencing them for my Cheapo styles! Trouble is, the ONML ones were done for me in Pete's styles but I'm not 100% sure he kept the same number of frames. If he did, the answer is the lizard trap (5 frames) followed by the spike trap (7 frames).

There are at least 2 such pairs I know of...to name 1 pair,it's FANL and FANL2...not difficult to know after redesigning both levels and having trouble with the key piece :)

To give exact names of the levels:
-Fall and no life.
-Fall and no life (part 2)

Q: What is the other pair that has a small terrain change?

[smiley=huh.gif] I was under the impression that all traps will activate as long as the lemming enters the relevant trigger area, walking or otherwise?

In any case, I'm quite certain there is no difference in how the game treats the various forms of a non-constant trap (ie. the ones that's harmless to other lemmings while operating on a victim); they differ purely in the graphics.  So the answer would have to be either all of them or none of them.

Some of them are different. And constant traps are different, the lemming is technically still there while the animation is playing. On non-constant traps the lemming is removed as soon as the animation starts.

Maybe the number would help? I'll go count again to make sure I have it right.

EDIT: Some traps have trigger areas only 4 pixels wide. I missed a few, cce may be right.

EDIT2: cce is right, just ignore that question. The problem was that objects are aligned to multiples of 8, so some of them missed. :P An interesting thing I discovered though is that the trigger area for all non-constant traps is 4 pixles wide. I think it's also 4 pixels high.

I tried saving a drowning lemming by putting the exit in the drowner's path but it seems to fail...

With non-constant traps,the lemming is removed instantly,the lem you see "frying" or so,is an animation and not a real lem.

However with constant traps (also water/lava/acid/tentacles) the real lemming is still there and does unusual stuff.
And this is what intrigues me a lot...there are also several other "unusual" behaviors of lemmings:
-Jumper (no skill can be distributed I guess except bomber)
-Oh-no-er (behaves very strangely,especially when he enters the exit while oh-no-ing)
-Splatter (the lem also remains for a little while)
-Faller (can be turned around by blocker)
-Shrugger (I know in certain versions this can trigger really strange behavior)

After all this,I wonder in which situations a lem can be saved and/or cause abnormal/glitchy behavior...

One other thin that seems strange to me is that interactive objects have a trigger area but exits don't work when there's no terrain under them...

No, I remember the electrode trap used in "Rhapsody in Blue" has a height of 8 for the trigger area.  And I would think the spike traps in Taxing 4 probably has a height that's closer to the graphical height of the trap than only 4 pixels.

I don't remember the width, but I seem to remember the electrode trap trigger area's height is also 8.

It's true though that the minimum possible trigger area is 4x4, just like steel areas.  So it makes sense that many non-constant traps will have trigger areas of that size.

I believe I mention some time ago that when trigger areas overlap, the one with the highest z-order lower than 16 "wins" the overlap.  In other words, the trigger area with the highest z-order below 16 overwrites other trigger areas in the overlap.

I'm also somewhat certain that the game will not drift a drowning lemming to a location that is non-water, for obvious reasons.

So you have a catch-22.  If you want the lemming to drift to the location with the exit's trigger area, you would need to have water in that area, but then the water would overwrite the exit's trigger area, basically erasing the exit.

In Genesis Lemmings, there are 2 pairs of levels such that:

1) One level's title names the level as "part 2" of the other level.
2) The "part 2" level precedes the other level in the natural ordering (ie. ascending rating then number).

Name the levels in each of the two pairs.


Hint:  criteria #1 specifically concerns only the title.  The levels are not necessarily similar......

I've noticed some drowners drifting outside water objects (air) I think,but I certainly saw a drifter bouncing back when he hit a wall.

What would happen if I set the Z order from the exit to 0 and that of the water to 1,hence having the exit trigger area overlapping some parts of the water?

The part of the exit's trigger area that overlaps with the water's will be overwritten by the water (since the water has the higher z).  So this is exactly like what I said above, you won't have an exit trigger area for the lemming to drift to.

In the reverse case, it should be the case that the lemming will not drift past the exit's trigger area.  It's possible that graphically the lemming might look to have reached the trigger area (ie. some of the observed motion is in the animation rather than explicitly repositioning the lemming), but that would just be graphical.

Try it out and see what happens.  As I said, I'm not 100% sure.

I did some quick experiment and it looks like you're right, drowners can drift outside water objects into air.  But no luck in getting it to exit, or for that matter, in getting it to interact with anything it seems.  Maybe the game just doesn't let drowners interact with anything.

No, it looks like I'm wrong.

I checked my own list of levels that I made while playing, and Present 13 is called "Watch your step (Part Two)". Annoyingly, Planet Lemmings just gives it as "Watch your step".

Does that count now, since I got the answer from my own list and not from a website, even though I did have to look at a website to check?  :P  If so I will ask my question now.

Set up a blocker and have a lemming climb up.Let him dig down at a certain point,so that he digs away the terrain left to the exit too (leave a few pixels).Then when he's little below the level of the other lemmings have him mine (he would turn around and remove the pixels),then bash towards the left.

I haven't actually tried it but it seems the way to do it after looking at the picture from Lemmings Planet.

Very clever; I think that would work, though it can be done ever more simply by digging when the climber is facing left, then bashing when he reaches the level of the other lemmings.

The one trap that is never used is the knife slicer trap on the crystal graphics set.

Q: Which of the Lemmings 1 traps uses the most frames in its animation?
