Next round is finally ready! Send your answers to the Quizmaster via PM by no later than 00:00 UTC March 9.

1. How many players will participate in this round?
2. Give an example of a large number.
3. Name a month with 31 days.
4. Name a fruit with large seed(s).
5. Submit a forum emote (aka smiley/emoticon) that is related to the Olympic games.
6. Name an Oscar category whose associated* films/features rarely show up* in another category.
(*associated/show up:  either the film/feature itself was nominated for the category, or was the work of the people being nominated for the category, or the thing being nominated was used by the film/feature)
7. What is a way that someone can stay warm while being inside?
8. Name an energy source for a power plant.
9. Name a mathematical function.
10. Which key on the keyboard is used the least?

-----------------------

I made a minor edit to make it very clear what I mean by "associated" or "showed up" (same meaning) on #6, although it's basically exactly how most people would read it I think.  Basically a category can be for a film/feature itself, for people, or for a thing, but even in the other two cases, each nominee is also linked to a specific film/feature.

Friendly reminder that the current feud round ends in less than 24 hours!  I will probably not actually start scoring them until at least a few hours later than the stated deadline, and may accept late submissions, but to guarantee your scoring, do please try to submit before the stated deadline of March 9 00:00:00 UTC.

Alright, time for the reveal!

1. How many players will participate in this round? (ccexplore)
15 (1 pt) - ccexplore, Akseli, bsmith, grams88
10 (1 pt) - Simon, Nihilist Comedy Hour, Crane, geoo
0 (0.25 pt) - 607

Quote from: 607
I mean... "0"? :P It really does seem like the most obvious answer, here. Besides perhaps the number of participants from the previous round.

Quote from: geoo
10 (because it's  a hard round)

geoo's intuition was practically dead-on: initially only 8 players participated including yours truly, with all submission arriving within 1-2 days after questions were posted.  Then we finally had geoo's late submission arriving just as I was about to wrap up scoring.

2. Give an example of a large number. (NaOH)
one million/million/a million (1 pt) - Simon, Akseli, 607
googolplex (1 pt) - ccexplore, Crane, geoo
one billion/1 billion (0.67 pt) - Nihilist Comedy Hour, bsmith
100 (0.33 pt) - grams88

"Who wants to be a millionaire?" Apparently a good number of you. :P

3. Name a month with 31 days. (NaOH)
January (1 pt) - Nihilist Comedy Hour, Akseli, Crane, 607, grams88, geoo
March (0.5 pt) - ccexplore, Simon, bsmith

4. Name a fruit with large seed(s). (ccexplore)
peach (1 pt) - ccexplore, bsmith, 607
avocado (0.67 pt) - Simon, geoo
grapefruit (0.33 pt) - Nihilist Comedy Hour
coconut (0.33 pt) - Akseli
watermelon (0.33 pt) - Crane
loquat (0.33 pt) - grams88

(loquats)

Quote from: Simon
The Mango has a gigantic seed, but maybe that's not as well-known as the Avocado. At least with the Avocado seed, the internet loves to argue whether you should eat the seed or not!

Wait, you can eat the avocado seed?!?!? :lem-mindblown:

I think some of you misread "large" as "many" (eg. watermelon).  Avocado did come to my mind actually, but wasn't sure if it's as well known of a fruit for feud purposes.

5. Submit a forum emote (aka smiley/emoticon) that is related to the Olympic games. (NaOH)
:tal-gold: (1 pt) - ccexplore, Simon, Nihilist Comedy Hour, Akseli, bsmith, grams88
8-) (0.17 pt) - Crane
 (0.17 pt) - 607
:8(): (0.17 pt) - geoo

Quote from: Simon
I'm torn between :tal-gold: and  because obviously :tal-gold: is factually best, but  is related too and sticks out clearly from all other smileys

Quote from: geoo
(those talismans are not real emotes)

6. Name an Oscar category whose associated films/features rarely show up in another category. (ccexplore)
Best Foreign Language Film (1 pt) - ccexplore, Simon
Best Animated Feature (1 pt) - Nihilist Comedy Hour, Akseli
Best Documentary Feature (0.5 pt) - bsmith
Best Animated Short Film (0.5 pt) - Crane
Best Documentary Short Subject (0.5 pt) - 607
Best Picture (0.5 pt) - grams88
Best soundtrack [Best Original Score] (0.5 pt) - geoo

I think the award categories so often being split between "short" and "feature" hurted some people here score-wise.

By the way, Best Animated Feature often had a nominee (usually from Pixar/Disney/Dreamworks) that also had a Best Original Song nomination.  And often one of the Best Picture nominees also got a Best Original Score nomination.

7. What is a way that someone can stay warm while being inside? (NaOH)
blanket/wear a blanket/blanket over you (1 pt) - Nihilist Comedy Hour, bsmith, grams88
heater/room heating/turn on the heating (1 pt) - ccexplore, Simon, geoo
log-fire (0.33 pt) - Akseli
central heating (0.33 pt) - Crane
wear clothes (0.33 pt) - 607

The various heating answers gave me so much grief wrt subclass rule. :( I think "central heating" is technically slightly more specific than "heating" in general, though it is common enough for indoor heating that maybe one should argue is synonym?  "Heater" is just any device that produces heat (and I basically meant heating in general even though the answer I typed in is "heater"), so I would count it as synonym for general heating.  "Room heating" is not exactly the typical phrasing in my parts of the world, I'm reading it as indoor heating in general, and therefore another synonym for "heating" in context of given question.

If anyone feels strongly about all that, feel free to argue your case and I'll consider re-scoring if you change my mind.  I did verify though that changing "central heating" to synonym scoring with the rest of heating answers does not affect the top 3 rankings, but does move Crane up one ranking.

Quote from: Simon
Besides Room heating, another excellent answer is Booze. Most of the Lemmings Forums should have reached drinking age, but several geeks shun all alcohol.

8. Name an energy source for a power plant. (ccexplore)
nuclear/nuclear fission/nuclear energy (1 pt) - ccexplore, Crane, 607, geoo
coal (0.75 pt) - Simon, Nihilist Comedy Hour, bsmith
fossil fuel (0.25 pt) - Akseli
oil (0.25 pt) - grams88

9. Name a mathematical function. (NaOH)
sin/sine (1 pt) - ccexplore, Simon, bsmith, Crane, geoo
squared (0.2 pt) - Nihilist Comedy Hour
constant function (0.2 pt) - Akseli
addition (0.2 pt) - 607
square root (0.2 pt) - grams88

10. Which key on the keyboard is used the least? (ccexplore)
` ~ (1 pt) - ccexplore, bsmith
scroll lock (1 pt) - Simon, 607
insert (0.5 pt) - Nihilist Comedy Hour
num lock (0.5 pt) - Akseli
q (0.5 pt) - Crane
PrintScreen/Sysrq (0.5 pt) - grams88
menu key (0.5 pt) - geoo

Unsurprisingly, lots of opinions here (and variety of answers). I actually have no clue what the "real" answer is.

Quote from: Simon
MS Excel reacts to Scroll Lock, I hope this feature is not prevalently known across the Feud players here. Insert and Caps Lock may be less useful than Scroll Lock, but people press them by accident all the time.

Quote from: Crane
non-Feud answer... it's probably Scroll Lock, but I can see people choosing letters first

Quote from: 607
My real answer: Pause/Break. My Feud answer: "Scroll Lock".

Quote from: grams88
sometimes the Sysrq is on the same key as the printscreen

Quote from: geoo
menu key (even though I do use it myself to avoid touching the mouse)

-----------------------

Results:
1. ccexplore (9.50) :tal-gold:
2. Simon (8.92) :tal-silver:
3. bsmith (8.42) :tal-bronze:
4. geoo (7.83)
5. Nihilist Comedy Hour (7.45)
6. Crane (6.83)
7. Akseli (6.62)
8. 607 (6.45)
9. grams88 (6.12)

Yay me. :-\ In case you're wondering, geoo's late entry pushed Simon's score past bsmith's and widened the gap between me and Simon.

Anyhow, Simon gets to host the next round or pass the honor to someone else.  Thanks everyone for participating!

Also special thanks to NaOH for helping with half the questions. 8-) Not sure if it made things easier or harder?

I'm surprised that nobody took the identity function.

That's not fully unproblematic since different language layouts have different sign combinations and the signs on other keys. But since it's about the key and not the sign I think it could be ok; I assume it's based upon American layout?

I would actually put "central heating" to all the various heating stuff. But since I didn't participate I won't judge.

Nice round, tricky questions! I would have lumped central heating with the other heatings, but it's handy that it wouldn't have impacted the top-3 ranking.

bsmith, if you would like to host, feel free to go ahead! Otherwise, I'll try to have a feud going by Sunday evening.

Welldone to Ccexplore for winning that one.

I probably would of lumped central heating with the other heatings as well. A good family feud round, not the best for myself, hehe. Oh that was a tricky question with the what key is used the least, we got to see Ccexplore's evil side, only kidding. I would say most of the answers given are quite good ones and one of those ones might be the actual answer but then again is there an actual real answer to that one.

I got a clarification request: "Define magical powers." Answer: A magical power can produce arbitrary effects that may violate conventional physics in any way.

Oops, I interpreted 'mathematical function' as 'mathematical operation', which lead me to 'Addition'. :P
The new Feud looks fun! I'll try to submit answers later this evening.

As far as I know is addition a function with two arguments.

Another clarification request: "For 4... I want to clarify... do the balls have to be in play simultaneously, or can it be like [...] there's often another [ball] in the player's pocket [...]?" -- At least two balls should have an impact on the game mechanics. If the sport remains playable by the rules even without such replacement balls, it shouldn't qualify as "requiring at least two balls".

Hi! I'm behind by 3 days to resolve the feud. x_X

Quote from: grams88
Just in time hopefully.

No problems, you submitted 15 minutes before the deadline; especially no problems because I score late. :8():

Quote from: ccexplore
Really? and people think my round's hard??!?! :XD:

1. Name an animal that lives in the forest.
Bear (1 pt) -- Simon, Raymanni, Crane, Akseli, NaOH, 607, grams88
Deer (0.14 pts) -- ccexplore
Monkeys (0.14 pts) -- Nessy
Porcupine (0.14 pts) -- geoo

Quote from: geoo
porcupine (not sure if this is even true)
Quote from: 607
"A bear." Hopefully people won't say 'brown bear'. :P

2. If you had magical powers, what would you use them for?
Flight (1 pt) -- Crane, Akseli, grams88
Profit/spawn money (0.67 pts) -- Raymanni, NaOH
World peace (0.67 pts) -- geoo, ccexplore
Fight crime (0.33 pts) -- Nessy
Saving people (0.33 pts) -- 607
Teleportation (0.33 pts) -- Simon

grams88 gave two answers, I could have scored it as either "Flight" or "Saving people", and both match others' answers. I chose to score it as "Flight" because everything else is in parentheses and the question wasn't 100 % obvious whether you should give a superpower itself or its long-term benefit to people.

Quote from: grams88
2) Flying (Saving someone from a burning building)
Quote from: geoo
world peace (it's not about what would it be, but what would you use them for)
Quote from: 607
Hard to imagine what people would answer here. I suppose what it's most often used for in media is "Saving people."
Quote from: ccexplore
world peace ["get everything I want" also seems like a good answer, but not sure if everyone who goes for a selfish answer will say quite that.  Whereas "world peace" seems like a pretty standard altruistic answer, hoping enough people will go for this?]

3. Name a word that programmers might say often.
Bug (1 pt) -- Akseli, Nessy, ccexplore
Code (0.67 pts) -- Simon, NaOH
Algorithm (0.33 pts) -- grams88
Compile (0.33 pts) -- Crane
If (0.33 pts) -- 607
Variable (0.33 pts) -- Raymanni
f*ck (0.33 pts) -- geoo

Quote from: Raymanni
Variable (or any swear words)
Quote from: 607
Interesting. :P There are so many ways to go about this, and none seem obvious... :P I'll go with an often used expression: "If".
Quote from: ccexplore
bug ["null", "string" etc. seems like good answers but probably not well-known enough for non-programmers; "bug" seems like something even non-programmers could pick]

4. Name a sport that requires at least two balls.
Pool (1 pt) -- geoo, 607, ccexplore, grams88
Billiards (0.75 pts) -- Raymanni, Akseli, Nessy
Bowles (0.25 pts) -- Crane
Croquet (0.25 pts) -- NaOH
Snooker (0.25 pts) -- Simon

Proxima and I agree that Pool and Pool Billiards are synonyms, and that "Billards" is the superclass of Snooker and Pool.

Quote from: Raymanni
Billiard (I was only thinking of traditional ball games, but then realized billiard and pool are sports too)

5. Name something that you can collect.
Stamps (1 pt) -- Simon, Raymanni, geoo, Akseli, NaOH, 607, ccexplore, grams88
Coins (0.12 pts) -- Crane
Pokemon (0.12 pts) -- Nessy

Quote from: Nessy
Pokemon (not sure if this answer will be popular... but it's all I can think of :8():)
Quote from: 607
"Post Stamps" is what I think many people collect. Personally, I've seen many people collect Hot Wheels cars... but that's probably just a certain group of people, while post stamp collecting covers multiple demographics.

6. Name an invention older than 1,000 years.
Wheel (1 pt) -- Simon, Raymanni, geoo, Crane, NaOH, Nessy, 607
Fire (0.29 pts) -- Akseli, ccexplore
Boat (0.14 pts) -- grams88

Quote from: 607
"The wheel". I was going for 'fire' at first, but I'm not sure if most would see that as an invention.

7. Name a location that is often robbed in heist movies.
Bank (1 pt) -- Simon, Raymanni, geoo, Crane, Akseli, NaOH, Nessy, 607, grams88
Museum (0.11 pts) -- ccexplore

Quote from: ccexplore
museum ["bank" is first thing that came to mind, except actual heist movies generally have more interesting targets than that.  I'm very tempted to answer "vault"/"safe room" or similar because regardless of the actual building, the thing being stolen is typically stored in such a location inside the building.  But not sure is popular enough for feud purposes...]

8. For how long do you attempt a single hard custom Lemmings level before taking a break?
1 hour (1 pt) -- geoo, Crane, NaOH, Nessy, 607
30 minutes (0.60 pts) -- Simon, Akseli, grams88
1 day (0.20 pts) -- ccexplore
3 hours (0.20 pts) -- Raymanni

Quote from: Raymanni
Depends. I think my record is 3 hours straight. So 3 hours.

9. Name a color of sexy underwear.
Pink (1 pt) -- Simon, geoo, Akseli, ccexplore, grams88
Red (0.60 pts) -- Raymanni, Crane, 607
Black (0.40 pts) -- NaOH, Nessy

Quote from: Raymanni
Red :lix-blush:
Quote from: 607
Pffft. :P "Red", I'd say.

10. How many minutes does it take for the Finnish fire department to arrive?
10 minutes (1 pt) -- geoo, NaOH
Never (1 pt) -- Raymanni, ccexplore
1 minute (0.50 pts) -- grams88
15 minutes (0.50 pts) -- Simon
30 minutes (0.50 pts) -- Nessy
5 minutes (0.50 pts) -- Crane
6 minutes (0.50 pts) -- 607
60 minutes (0.50 pts) -- Akseli

Quote from: geoo
10 minutes (efficient Finnish fire brigade)
Quote from: Crane
Five minutes (Haha!)
Quote from: NaOH
10, the number of this question even.
Quote from: Nessy
30 minutes (poor Akseli!:P)
Quote from: 607
I really wouldn't know what to go for, here... even 0 doesn't seem like an obvious choice. :P I've Googled 'how long does it take for the fire department to arrive', so let's go with the answer I found there... "Six".
Quote from: grams88
1 minute (Akseli is probably going to kill me) :scared:
Quote from: Raymanni
They can't arrive because all roads are blocked by the snow within a 10km radius. Akselin talo palaa ja hän kuolee yksin hankeen.

Google translate: The house of the ax is burning and she dies in the project alone.

Results
1. geoo (8.143)
2. Akseli (8.136)
3. NaOH (7.983)
4. 607 (7.767)
5. grams88 (7.576)
6. Raymanni (7.550)
7. Simon (7.350)
8. Crane (6.808)
9. ccexplore (6.406)
10. Nessy (6.251)

This is the closest finish we've ever had: geoo tops the list 0.007 points ahead of Akseli. I had to change the numeric precision of the spreadsheet from 2 to 3 decimal places to show the difference.

Congrats to all participants!

Interesting that so many converged onto the bear for #1.  I kinda went with animals that I would likely see in real life in my corner.  I've only seen the bear either in the zoo or once in Alaska.

#6 and #7 I clearly should've just gone with first-instinct answers. :XD: But I still think bank heists are more common on TV than movies?  Even the train probably gets robbed more in Westerns than actual banks I think?

For #10 I was hoping for hopefully at least one other person picking the "never" answer, which fortunately did work out.  What I had in mind though was that either there was no fire (the question never explicitly said things got bad), or Akseli put it out himself.
