Autumn 2016 LD Contest [VOTING]
« on: November 17, 2016, 01:00:28 AM »
Welcome to the Late Autumn/Winter Lemmings Forum Side Contest!

VOTING PHASE HAS BEGUN!
It will be open for about 2 weeks at least.?

it's too late to join! or enter another level; sorry.

folder of levels: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/72760678/AutumContestLooseLevels.zip

levelpack (thanks to Flopsy): https://www.dropbox.com/s/s563vhc7vpzbb70/mobius%20LD%20contest.nxp?dl=0
(currently has an issue with my level I'm working on)

entries so far: 15 levels

rtw

Anyone may join by entering a level. Even if you don’t enter a level you may participate by playing the levels that are submitted later; during the play phase and voting phase.

standard contest rules:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

IMPORTANT
-submit your level(s) to me via PM. Levels will be posted publicly when the playing phase begins.
-if you’re making a Level for Lix, please use the D version of Lix.
-if you’re making a level for NeoLemmix, please make sure you’re making it compatible with the latest stable release (not experimental, it may, but this is not required).
-You must include a replay of your intended solution to the level to prove it’s solvable.
-You may include some levels for one engine and some for another.
-Depending on participation I may allow entering up to three levels, one for each rule. But as of now it's a maximum of 2 levels per person.

The Submission phase will be open initially for about 3 weeks. So from now until Dec 7. If I get a lot of submissions I may close it sooner; if I get very few I may lengthen it. Regardless, I will post near this time to ask what the participants would prefer.

The Playing phase will then go for about three weeks after that, again depending on participation and what the participants prefer. During this time level submitters and anyone else may play the levels, the submitters may update their levels.

The voting phase will then go for about three weeks after that, again depending on participation and what the participants prefer. During this time the submitters are finished updating their levels and cannot submit any more fixes or new levels.

the rules/restrictions:

one type of skill
You’re level must have only 1 type of skill available. The amount of this skill may be any number (including infinite) and it may be any skill of your choosing.
You may include pick-up skills, as long as they are all the same as this one skill.
You may have preplaced lemmings or entrances with preassigned skills but the said preassigned skill must be the same as the single skill you've chosen.

Hard-for-Flopsy
You’re level must follow the following conditions;
-99RR
- Lemmings are heading for trouble, eg water, trap, fatal fall [in other words; not in a state of infinite safety at the start like in a holding pit]
- tight time limit
- 100% save requirement

alter existing original level
[this rule is only applicable to NeoLemmix or Lemmini/SuperLemmini]
You must take a level from either; Original Lemmings, Oh No More Lemmings, The Genesis version of OL, or L2 and alter it to have a different solution. There is no strict definitions on this rule, you may alter the stats and terrain or objects of the level. Keep in mind; the original level must be recognized in your final product. If I can't determine which level this is even by looking at a picture; it doesn't count.
-Please indicate which level you picked with your submission for this rule.

Feel free to ask for any clarifications.

Change of rules:

-The only modification to the standard rules I can think of at the moment is; I don’t care to disallow talking about the levels during any phase of the contest. You may discuss this contest at any time.
-Also, sorry but I can’t give any kind of prize to the first place winner; unless the first place winner happens to want a free copy of contraption maker but apparently nobody wants that :P

That's a good point--I vote to relax that restriction. I'd say the level will be hard enough anyways without the time limit. And if the lix levels can't have it; it might make more sense to relax it for other engines as well.

Another good point-- Preassigned skills are allowed--- as long as the preassigned skill is the same single skill (the same which would appear in the menu or as pick-up skills. So still only 1 skill allowed. I've updated the main post.

If you're good at Hard-For-Flopsy levels, then the name doesn't seem really appropriate anymore does it? :P
Right you said good at "making" them, not playing them.

Also where do I get a classic level to modify it?

Quick question, how do I save a replay again?

You can press the "Save Replay" hotkey (default key: U) at any time during gameplay or on the postview screen. By default, NeoLemmix is also configured to automatically save a replay any time you successfully complete a level.

Also where do I get a classic level to modify it?

Press F4 on the title screen to save LVL copies of all levels in the current NXP (only works if the pack you're playing is configured to allow it; the NXPs of the official games do allow it). Note that this feature is broken on V1.47n, but works on all other versions (including V1.47n-B, -C etc).

we've gotten 13 entries, more than I expected. Would anybody like to/be opposed to starting the playing phase sooner than Dec7? Keep in mind, either way you can still enter a level (or two) while the playing phase is going on. I'd like the playing phase to remain open for longer (unless it really isn't needed). You can also retract/change a submission during this time.

If other people can still enter-----then let's simply extend the playing phase starting from Dec 1 for example.

An nxp pack with all the levels (+ working custom music ;)) would be nice to have again. :)

----Okay---- The playing phase has officially begun. The original post will be edited with the folder of levels.
-I will make an nxp pack of all the levels but I'll have to upload this tomorrow at the earliest--not enough time at the moment.

-Included is all the levels, by Author, with music files and graphic files where necessary. I'll post more tomorrow with more info.

Uploaded an nxp version to my Dropbox for simplicity

Hopefully I have arranged the levels into the correct rules, please let me know if there are any mistakes.

Also there were some tilesets missing which we added in, hopefully it means the nxp is fully playable. Please let us know if any levels are unplayable due to tileset errors, it is hard to identify if a single piece from an obscure graphic set has been used.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/s563vhc7vpzbb70/mobius%20LD%20contest.nxp?dl=0

Note: On testing this nxp, there is a problem with mobius's R2 level (Level 6 - after IchoTolot's level). It produces an error message which closes Neo Lemmix, to get to namida and RTW's entries, just scroll backwards from Level 1.
EDIT: This error message seems to be native to just me but I was able to play the level in the Neo Lemmix editor's test mode by extracting the tancastle tileset to my styles folder for the editor.

Didn't download yet to test - does it even give this error message on the level select screen? If not, using that is also an option.

The NXP works fine for me, even on the supposedly faulty level (using player V10.011.011-B; which is the same version Flopsy said he uses; I also had my config the same, so not sure what's going on here).

The only issue, and this is an EXTREMELY minor one, is that at least one music file is missing. If you put the attached music file in your "music" folder, that'll sort that issue out.

I get the error message: "ObtainObject loop on "tancastle:o0". Please report this"     when trying to access that level

Playing it in the editor works. But I get the same error when trying to acces it as a single level with the player directly.

That's the same error Flopsy got. This is strange, especially since it works when playtesting from the editor, despite that this should make zero difference (assumign the graphic set is present in both cases). For me, any method of accessing it (editor, single level or NXP) works fine, on both V10.011.011 and V10.011.011-B (I didn't test V10.010.010; Flopsy reported no issues with V1.48-B).

This seems strange indeed. I tried this with  V10.011.011-B + the alternative version btw.

Maybe I will start recording soon regardless. Then I will play the level afterwards in editor playtest mode.

I know I need to address some things but it may have to wait a day or so. I'm very sorry but a bunch of things have come up and I don't have the time. Fortunately most of these problems are not big; I'll fix my level and include anything I forgot. If anyone else is able/willing to fix the issue before I can, you may do so. The contest will still go about as normal.
Please keep the replays and discussion on this topic and post updates in the update topic I just made.

after a little quick searching I have no idea what's causing the problem with my level. The issue could likely be something wrong with the graphic set; this was my first time putting together a set and using the Graphic set tool.
Maybe tomorrow or over the weekend I'll try recompiling the graphic set.

Your solution to The Doubly-Hard-For-Flopsy level is a backroute quite similar to the one Flopsy found; the updated version has two fixes to prevent this kind of backroute.

Your solution to Stoned Steps is also a backroute, I'll put a fix up soon.

Yes you did backroute What A Bonnie Wee Level zanzindorf, nice backroute there, didn't think of that one!

Fixed it and updated it anyway.

Your solution to The Doubly-Hard-For-Flopsy level is a backroute. The updated version already prevents your solution from working as-is, but I'll need to test it more to see if the overall idea of your solution can be made to work with a few changes...

Couldn't get to work?  :lem-shocked:  Which error did you get? I attached the tileset again right out of my styles folder just in case.

For the NXP version it would say that the graphic set could not be found then close. Downloaded the style and it works fine now.

For the NXP version it would say that the graphic set could not be found then close. Downloaded the style and it works fine now.

Then it's simply that the cavelem tileset was not included in the nxp in the first place + you also hadn't it before playing. Good thing that everything is fine now :)

You could download my whole L2+ L3 pack so you got everyone of the styles as they are widely used anyway: http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2228.0

I failed to make it clear that if you're downloading the loose levels; you must install the L2+L3 graphic sets (which are included in the folder there); some of them are used by multiple entries.

The Doubly-Hard-For-Flopsy Level is still a backroute, though far less severely than it was before. I'll have to think about how to fix this one.

Stoned Steps is the intended solution.

Alternative solution, but not a backroute. 2 tricks I intended you simply replaced them with 2 other equally clever ones (especially that basher turning on steel was not on my list :P). Maybe I will make some changes, but I doubt so right now --- when nobody actually backroutes it ;).

Great to hear you liked it! :) It is 100% not created to win here as it's probably way too long for that, but I just want to get a bit of exactly that solution feedback!

Woo! Played "Great Scott! V3" and "The Doubly-Hard-For-Flopsy Level V4". Fairly confidant my solutions are not backroutes, these solutions feel pretty intentional. Hopefully that's the case. Both are really fun levels

Your solution is definitely close enough to the intended one. :) I could probably block this if I want, but unless more major backroutes that'd also be blocked by the fix come up, I don't think it's nessecary.

since it seems like participation is dying down, should we close the playing/updating phase soon? I propose a week from now, closing sometime from Friday-Monday. [maybe sooner if people wish but I think Friday sounds early enough]

When it does; (or before it does) make sure the latest version of your level you've uploaded is one your happy with; people will be voting based on that.

@zanzindorf

Just had a chance to watch the replay. While not identical to the intended solution, it's close enough - you distributed the skills a little differently, but you still performed all the key elements of the correct solution. I could probably remove it by being a little stricter with the skillset, but there's probably not much value in that. I've attached a replay of the intended solution.

I'm honestly not sure if there's anyway to backroute this level that wouldn't at least operate on the same principles as the intended solution. Of course, now that I say that I'm sure someone will find a way :P.

Well I wanted to replay+record the updated levels this weekend. So I would like it to remain open for at least that time and I also think some people are still trying their luck on solving the levels. There is no need to rush here!

Here's my replays for the updated / newly added levels up to where I was previously up to.

Colorful Arty's "Great Scott!" (click to show/hide)

Dullstar's "Muddy Staris" (click to show/hide)

I didn't play Flopsy's updated level, firstly because it was unclear whether my solution was actually a backroute or not, and more importantly because the latest update hasn't been included in the NXP yet. If it hasn't been by the time I complete the remaining levels, I'll play it as a single level.

Well namida, you ROYALLY backrouted both levels. That said, I think I'll allow the one for GREAT SCOTT as it was equally tricky if not more so than the intended way. Return of the beast however, I'm going to severely restrict the skills so as to enforce a cooler solution.

I plan to close the contest and begin the voting phase on Wednesday, Dec 21.

So, to everyone who entered a level make sure you're level is polished as much as you want and the last one entered is the version you're happy with (if not you can enter another version until Wednesday.)

The playing/submission phase is now officially over. Thank you to everyone who entered a level and who played.

You may no longer update your levels or enter new levels for this contest. Also please avoid talking about the levels in question here to avoid influencing the vote.

The voting phase has begun; please vote up two four levels that you *like* to move on to the next round. You may vote for fewer than 4 levels. There will be three rounds ....and I think I'd like to do a first, second and third place thing, just for crap and giggles.
Since the holidays are this week, I may leave the first phase open for a long time as no doubt many people will be away.

Alright well the voting has ended and we have a four way tie between Flopsy, GigaLem, IchoTolot and me. So congratulations to all the winners?*

I had fun with this contest; I hope everyone else did as well. A lot of good and fun levels were entered. It's officially over now. The levels entered here may now be used for anything according to the creator's discretion.

I don't have any plans to run a new contest in the immediate future, but I believe one may be brewing on the horizon by someone else.

*I suppose it's a good thing I wasn't offering an actual prize :-\

Simply post the latest version of it + music in the community pack topic (or pm me with it) and I'll add it to the pile ;)      This also goes to everyone else who wants this to happen.

Also great outcome here! All levels were excellent this time!

Sorry for the delayed post

This has been a great contest, I was quite embarrassed when I first saw the Hard For Flopsy rule but then when I saw that everyone entered a level in that category and they were all of very high quality, I realised what a great rule it was.

Thanks for organising this contest mobius

I'm surprised I've won 2 contests now in the short time I've been here and they have both been Highland levels!
