Lix/L++ Custom Levels
« on: May 07, 2011, 06:08:07 PM »
Mod edit (Clam): Split from the ClamLix topic. (Note that or more posts were deleted by their authors before this post.)

And again defeats the purpose Simon is trying to accomplish, if lemmings sprites exist inside the game.

Wait, so why aren't you putting lemmings sprites in? Copyright? Well, there have been other clones of lemmings... like Lemmix for example... what's so different about that?

I mean if it's because in Lemmix you're expected to own a copy of the Lemmings graphics already to supply yourself... well why can't you do that with L++ too? or at least encode the files the same way so it's easy to hack...? ;P

I'm just gonna speak my mind here - I don't really buy the copyright infringement reason for removing Lemming sprites in Lix. Presumably, Sony still own the right to the game's idea, so could still potentially sue if they really wanted to.

ISTR that Sony haven't released a Lemmings game for several years, and as nobody is really profiting from it, I can't see a huge issue with legal action.

However, that doesn't mean that I'm anti-Lix. I just think the reason behind it is a little bit different to what we've been told.

Of course,  he has thought really hard about what he wants from lix, we have had loooads of discussions about this in IRC.

Simon wants a lemmings clone that uses nothing from the real games except the idea itself.   I completely agree with what he decided, and scrapped  the original lemmings graphics/sounds used in l++ etc to turn it into a very custom-made lemmings clone.

Yea , its understandable what you are saying Adam.   Lix will definitely never be money related though as Simon always has made sure we know.    He just wants to feel safe about making a public domain clone that doesn't step on anyone's toes with using DMA/Rockstar/Sony's work.

I have respect for him wanting to feel safe about his project and putting in all the extra work after l++ was already finished, to change the game , only to ease his mind.

Sony, who holds the copyright, is known for C&D'ing anything that looks even remotely related. The risk may indeed be small, but the development of this particular game is a hobby I don't want to lose. You might be interested in this post, which compares all the related cases I know.

Since copyright is hopelessly muddy, convoluted, and has a huge lobby behind each case that passes to court, the pragmatic goal isn't "it complies with the law" (though this is a nice side effect), nor "it compares to similar case which went fine". It's "it doesn't raise the attention of large companies' lawyers".

The game should indeed be easy to hack, it's open source. Alternatively, you can probably still obtain the March 2010 version of L++, you might have to hunt around the web mindlessly.

Copyright cannot restrict usage of ideas, only usage of the given expressions. I wrote the code myself, I never even saw an L1 disassembly. The sprites were drawn according to the code's physics, not over lemming sprites. However, even though premise is false, your conclusion is still true, as Sony is the richer and way more powerful party.

Rubix has the reason right.

To be honest I like the lix sprites as much as the lemming ones. Graphical changes have never really bothered me much though.  :P

ON TOPIC- I'll makw some levels soon.

The Lix movement looks a bit wooden, like Mike's original Lemmings look more wooden than the ones that made it in to Lemmings. I just noticed because I was watching the video Mike linked to the other day.
This Lemmings forum is simply *fabulous*!

Interesting, but where can I get the actual levels?
I don't see the point of watching solutions to levels I haven't even played myself.

Also, if the levels were designed for Lemmix and not Lix/L++, perhaps this topic might be the more appropriate place to post them: http://www.lemmingsforums.com/index.php?topic=6.0

@Clam, nice levels employing the flinging physics, solved the 6 of them for now, the later ones sure are tricky.

As for choosing between Lemmings and Lix, there's still the old Lemmings bmp files which cover most of the skills, and only need to be adapted for a few new things. So while they sure won't be included in the official release, with some effort it's still possible to play with Lemmings graphics.

Since your levels are made in Lemmix, you could upload them to the levelpack database. You'll need to put them in a leevlpack (.DAT format) if you haven't already.

Also, as mentioned, there's already a topic for Lemmix levels, and even a sticky telling you where to put them. Usually I wouldn't complain about such things, but this thread has gone badly off topic already

Well I am becoming very close to the end of my 'huge' project.  A complete single player game done in lix, which means its ONLY for lix, sorry :)   I really love playing single player in this clone, as much as playing the multiplayer in it too.

Think of it as lemmings 1.75, with the use of lemmings abilities, and some extras from lemmings2
(walker, jumper, platformer, knock-back bomber)  With these extra abilities , I have come up with some very interesting ideas.

Great care has been taken in the building , especially in later levels, with sometimes spending 3-4 hours just trying hard to backroute my own maps.

So far this has taken me about 3.5 months, with 2-3 hours a day on average working on it I would say.

I am just awaiting for the last official terrain for lix to be decided on and created, so I can then finish this off, but decided to at least give people a look at most of the map names (subject to change , If I think of something more fitting before i'm done)

01 - Pleasant
http://postimage.org/image/aim1uwck/

02 - Sinister
http://postimage.org/image/ajaux3r8/

03 - Perplexing
http://postimage.org/image/ajpqr878/

04 - Nightmare
http://postimage.org/image/ak1binno/

My nightmare maps are very difficult, for those who really love a challenge and do not use glitches or bugs, so they can all be solved without worrying about being 'deceived' in that way.

There are a few maps that I have made remakes from lemmings maps, with new twists. (about 7 maps are remakes)

Hopefully this gives interest to those looking for another full set of lemmings maps to conquer later.  I'll keep you all updated.

Thanks
Rubix
