Sharing levels from the PSP version - how's it done?
« on: January 06, 2014, 07:37:22 PM »
I recently got a PS Vita, coupled with a bundle containing a memory card and a download code for ten games. One of these is the PSP version of Lemmings (the digital re-release of the European "PSP Essentials" budget re-issue, just in case that information is necessary), and I've made a couple of levels in it that I'd like to share here.

The problem is, I'm not quite sure how I'm supposed to do this. All I seem to be able to locate on my memory card is the level-bank that I created (which is marked as "Editable"), and sharing this with someone using a PSP and the US version of the game did not work. I doubt that the levels would be region-locked, so is there some step that I'm missing?

Thanks very much, Luis - I'll give that a try later.

I did search, incidentally, but for some reason I never found that thread!

After doing some reading and searching, I found out it doesn't work if the file is not the same region as the game is. A Levelbank save file from Europe will not appear on a USA Lemmings. They have different numbers and letters, like this:

USA: UCUS98647LEMBANKSLOT#

Europe: UCES00109LEMBANKSLOT#

Simply changing the name will not work. It will just appear as corrupted. You will need to convert it with the PSP having SGDeemer and custom firmware, which mines doesn't have. I'm gonna have to find someone who has a PSP with custom firmware and give them the save data to convert it.

You mean the PSP emulator? With an emulator you won't need to convert it. You can just download the US version of Lemmings for the US files.

That's true. The easiest thing for me to do is to buy the Europe version, since save files are region locked.

Wow really, they region-locked save files?!?!? :XD: Is there some shred of logic behind this that I'm not getting, or are they just that retarded? ;P  And I don't even normally whine about DRM and such.

It could be that, for example, the other version has one extra byte in the save data (perhaps language setting) and this throws the entire thing off, making the data register as corrupt.

I think another reason is the developers wants you to beat the game yourself and not just copy and paste a 100% file to your game, that was released earlier in a different region. I'm gonna buy the Europe version if anyone is interested in sharing PSP levels.

this kind of bulls*** is the main reason why I don't like consoles. You pay a ridiculous amount for all kinds of shenanigans and everything you can already do on the PC for less or free.

The gamecube was the last console I ever owned, I saw the BS train coming with their stupid memory cards..  ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley" />  ???

I would very much disagree at least as far as the PS3 goes. Even on an unmodded system, less than $10 a month for the premium subscription which gives you free games (which you can keep as long as you're subscribed, even when the games are removed from the rotation; if you already got them, you can keep them - and if your subscription expires, you do lose your games, BUT you get them back if you re-subscribe, again, even including the ones that have been removed from the rotation).

To be honest there wasn't really a point in getting the PSP Lemmings at all. Lemmix now has everything that the PSP has. (*Cough* the Special levels that I spend hours and days making *cough*) If Sony is gonna make a new Lemmings, they need to add mechanics that are impossible to do in Lemmix, which they already did in the PS3 with the teleport, vertical levels and skill pick ups.

They're impossible to do in Lemmix, are they? Challenge accepted. (Though I may take my time in completing said challenge.)

You can build a path with terrains to the place where the teleport takes you, but it still wouldn't be the same exact level.

You DO realise I have a copy of the source code, and I'm becoming quite proficient at modifying it, right? ;)

Not sure if you played Lemmings Plus II, but it already contains a new object type that isn't in the original games - areas that trigger secret levels. (It also has the one-way fields, but those in fact exist in the original game's code, they're just not used by any official objects - they are actually used internally by the game for technical purposes.)

I don't know what's Lemmings Plus 2 is, but if it can make the old Lemmings have teleports and skill pick ups, then go make remakes of the PS3 levels. I can help making some of the levels.

Not exactly. Lemmings Plus II is a level pack I made, which has some new features. It's the sequel to Lemmings Plus DOS Project (don't let the name mislead you, it runs on Windows only and uses Lemmix as the underlying engine - though this one doesn't contain any special mechanics apart from instant bombers).

Anyway, teleporters are definitely a feature that can easily be added in. Lemming cloners should also be possible. Pickupable skills might be a bit trickier - should be able to do it somehow, though. I'm currently working on improving the player to remove some of the glitches that carried over from DOS (since Lemmix replicates it almost perfectly) and other things (for example, I've improved trigger area resolution to pixel-perfect rather than a 4x4 grid).

What about those vertical levels? Something like that requires a Lemmings 2 editor, because the levels in that game are bigger. I just remembered another problem from back then. Not all the levels in the PS3 uses teleports and skill pickups, so I thought I make Mayhem 9 (Roar of the Big Machine) and the problem is the Lemmings in the PS3 able to survive bigger fall heights, than the old Lemmings. The Lemmings from the third entrance keeps splatting and the level will look weird, if I raise the terrains.
