The OFFICIAL Lemmings Forums Art Challenge
« on: March 23, 2011, 09:40:26 PM »
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the Lemmings Forums Art Challenge.
(Another game stolen from another forum I visit.. never mind.)

The rules are simple:
1. The competition must be able to be completed in Paint, or similar software
2. The winner of each challenge can either set a challenge or call open floor.
3. The person who sets the challenge judges their challenge and decides who wins.

If this takes off, I propose that every week (or so) we have a drawing competition, each with a theme. However, the challenges must have some ridiculous twist.

Okay, my challenge to you is quite simple:
Draw a cat in Paint with your eyes closed!

I've attached my example to show you just how amazing my drawing skills are with my eyes closed.

My Paint can't do that, you should be disqualified. :P (Especially as your cat looks too awesome.)

Below is my attempt. (It's from the backside, in case you don't recognize.)

Here be my attempt.  I used my Bamboo Pen tablet, so idk if that is cause for disqualification or not.  But it WAS done with my eyes closed.

Hmmm, thanks. :-) There were a couple of great other ones as well.

New Challenge: Draw (with the restriction explained afterwards) the cute chameleon couple from DragonsLover's levelpack Mikepack 14, level 8:

You can do a variation on the theme if you like. Bonus points for heart-shaped tails and likewise gimmicks. The dubious twist to the challenge is the following time restriction:

  • Set a timer. Stop painting 30 seconds after you start.
  • You may set up the palette, hotkeys, canvas size, ... ahead of the 30 seconds countdown, if necessary.
  • After the 30 seconds have run out, you may only crop/resize the image, save it, and upload it.

If you have Flash, you can use online-stopwatch.com, it will play a sound when the countdown has finished.

I am going to do this later today as well.

Nice :)

30 seconds are damn short. I drew the heart rather slowly, connecting its outline, as I wanted to floodfill it later. And I have no clue why the right chameleon has ears.

This was very difficult for me, since the given task was rather concrete. I let a neutral person act as the jury, with only telling her "they had 30 seconds, and get bonus points for heart-shaped tails and likewise gimmicks".

The winner is geoo! He gets the price for his outstanding blend of tongues, the heart, and a lemming for eye-catching. Several others came in close, and geoo's one had been among my favorites before, so I can fully support this decision.

The previous challenge was a lovely one, I'm not sure whether my new one can live up to it, but anyway, here it is.

New Challenge: Draw one of your favourite Lemmings levels (from one of the original games), only using the filled polygon tool, in 10 seconds flat.
(With filled polygon tool I mean the one that allows you to draw a path of points connected by lines, and when you double-click, the path gets closed and the enclosed area is filled. If you're not using MSPaint, anything that achieves an equivalent effect is allowed as well of course, and manually filling the area if the program doesn't provide filled polygon don't count towards the 10 second limit.)
After these 10 seconds, you may add a red dot for each entrance, a green dot for each exit, and resize the image, but nothing beyond that.
Put the name of the level in spoiler tags, so I can take a guess at what level is depicted there, and then verify whether my guess is correct.
Note: If it's evident to me that the level you picked is not amongst your favourites, i.e. you just picked it because it's easy to draw, then you'll have pretty low chances of winning. :P

Ten seconds is a bit too difficult to time, I find, didn't know how to do it. So i probably went over the time. Also I hate the fact that I have a mac and the only programs I have to do this kind of stuff are Photoshop, which is over-featured for this yet doesn't have a proper polygon tool, or some rather rubbishy paint ripoffs which don't have nearly enough features. Or one that I downloaded that was counterintuitive and stupid (apparently based on gimp, which i haven't tried, but it did stuff like expecting me to resize a picture twice, once for the layer and once for the canvas. or something like that). Or they're shareware and make you wait 30 s...

Anyway:

Quote from: Level Name
Where Lemmings Dare – I quite like the look of this level, but it was a lot easier than I remember it being before, when I played it the other day. Maybe I've just played the game too much. Also, I wouldn't say it's quite my favourite (although I'm not sure what that is) but you've kind of tied our hands in terms of what we can do because we can't exactly pick a complex or lengthy level and draw it in 10 seconds. Also I missed out the stalk in the ground  ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley" />
[/quote]

Also sorry if it makes the window have a scroll bar...

For once I might participate, but I do have a question:  is it okay to first try it out in paper and pencil to get a sense of how one plans on executing the drawing, or is that cheating?

I always assume that it's not cheating, you can practise as much as you like. The restriction counts only when making the final product that gets posted.

Man 10 seconds sure is short.  The first level that comes to mind is "It's Hero Time" but after numerous tries, it is clearly not feasible by me anyways. :XD: I settled on something that's borderline "easy to draw" but still a level that's interesting to me outside the challenge.  Even this one is not as easy to do in 10 seconds as first thought.

Quote from: spoiler
Just a Minute (Part 1).  I took care to include some details to make it clear that the depiction is Part 1 and not Part 2.  Took me a while and a bit of practice to draw those details efficiently to fit the 10 seconds!  This is my current drawing method:

1) left horizontal line
2) the 2 vertical lines below horizontal line from #1 (think "pi"), depicting the vertical pillars below the starting platform of the level.
3) the other horizontal line, from the right-leg of the pi all the way to the right (so in one stroke, I have both the platform for the "holding area" below the entrance that's unique to Part 1, as well as the platform on right end of level where the exit is)
4) the 2 vertical lines below horizontal line from #3 (think "pi" again)
5) draw the rectangle wall in the middle.  Make sure the rectangle extends vertically below the horizontal line from #3.

I was going to post some additional tips on the F.P. tool in MSPaint (particular with respect to using left and right mouse buttons), but it turns out the behaviors are more complex and perhaps inconsistent than I thought, so I decided to not offer tips that may end up confuse rather than help.  Explore on your own if so desired!

(On that note, I'm assuming that making lines with the F.P. tool is not cheating, since line segments are nothing but very thin polygons. ;P)

Week is over!

First of all, I managed to recognize the levels from the drawings pretty quickly except for Simon's and Adam's, Adam's because I don't know much about the SMS levels (though looking it up, the sketch represents the level pretty closely.) Simon's was difficult because it's just a part of the level, and while I recognized the lizard, I didn't recognize the tree as such, and one of my guesses was that it might be Nessy's head... Only found it out after flipping through the levels looking for two floating islands.

It was very difficult to decide. Most sketches focus on some obvious characteristics of the respective level to make it recognizable. "Where Lemmings dare" doesn't have such clear-cut and memorable features, but more complicated terrain, yet finlay somehow managed to make the level immediately recognizable to me (despite having to put up with all the hardships of multiple paint programs), therefore I declare him the winner. Congratulations!  :)

Yay! To be fair, I'd already covered the paint program hardships in the past, so it was a relatively straightforward case of going onto photoshop and using a workaround. Still, annoying.

Next: Not a lemmings related one I'm afraid. Use paint or similar, and take your favourite album and try and draw it. Since the name of the artist and album is usually on the front, you should replace this with text such as "band name" or "album name". I will give you an example that I made a couple of years ago when I saw this challenge on facebook (or wherever it was), but I will also try and make a new one for you to guess as well, cos otherwise it's no fun.

If you can, try not to be too obscure, but everyone has different music tastes so it's inevitable that we'll get ones that we can't all recognise. Also, I'm not setting a time limit but I don't want you spending too long on it. Also, feel free to make more than one, especially if you really think we won't get your first one. ;P

I'm with Simon on this one, it's a very hard challenge. I have an uncommon taste for music, and what I listen to rarely gets released as albums, and even less frequently in physical form with a cover.
There's like one album cover I'd recognize because it's famous (Abbey Road), but it's too sophisticated for me to draw (even though I could try to replace the Beatles with Lemmings), so I'm going with an album that I don't know myself but that RubiX suggested in IRC:

OK, I'm actually rubbish at music, it turns out, so this was probably a bad one for me to set. It's gone on for too long now, but I didn't recognise any of the albums, so I'm going to give it to Gronkling for looking the most like the album itself (I looked at them on google :P).

Wow Jason, that's pretty awesome! :o 8)

Anyway, I decided to be a little more serious and see if I can come up with anything entry-worthy.  I soon find out that squiggle can be a very annoying shape to work with.  After hours of doddling, this is my defiant attempt to break out of the confines of that shape.  I don't really know if I can draw the thing in under a minute even with practice (but I think it's feasible), I certainly didn't bother.

I purposely put the original squiggle in a shade of red so you can still see that it is actually there in the picture.  The idea is that the whole thing is supposed to be just black and white.  The ball in particular was supposed to be filled all black, so that a small part of the original squiggle that interferes with my picture effectively gets hidden by the shading of the ball.

So yeah, Jason's entry totally pwn'ed my pathetic attempt, but hey at least I actually tried this time. :P

It's refreshing to see that there are apparently a good number of ways to turn the squiggle into something other than a face, without resorting to the massive extra bits of drawing I did.  When I was doddling, the thing that really peeved me was how the squiggle kept seeming to force me into making some sort of face out of it, with some parts naturally fitting the curvature of a mouth or a nose (and not much of anything else I can think of).  Except the squiggle is oddly-shaped enough that inevitably when making a face out of it, the face will look somewhat deformed in parts. :-\ :P (Yeah, yeah, go ahead and say out loud what you're thinking:  I might've avoided a deformed face, but my girl looks like a deformed mutant anyhow.) At least for an artistic dummy like me.  Clearly not for Jason. ;P

Since the topic lacks activity, I propose a more free-spirited approach. Look at the most recent image posted to this thread, and draw something loosely associated to it. Associations may be as abstruse, far-fetched or nonexistant as you wish. You may participate any number of times.

I shall post the inspiring image and then an own contribution.

Hello dear moderator! I wish you a good day and would like to greet you from both me and geoo. You are welcome to participate in this free-shaped game. It'll blow our minds out of one ear and back in through the other. Nobody loses!

Aww, nobody replied within a few hours. I mean c'mon, you gypsy bums aren't that lazy, are you?

Simon urged me to bump this dead thread with a display of my lack of artistic ability, so here we go:

My avatar has caused this crash.  His quote is meant to be humorous - those who have seen Jeff Dunham, and his dummy "Achmed the Dead Terrorist", will see.  Those who haven't can see him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uwOL4rB-go

Great entries by everyone. It seems as if no new pics are going to be posted for a while, so I'm ending it.

Everybody who participiated wins this one -- since the inspiring image wasn't always the same, and since the challenge was intended to be as free-formed as possible.

Next challenge can also be made by everyone, but best by Matt or Gronkling. This is because they've had less turns to make one than geoo, and have participated more times in the current challenge than other people.

Simon urged me to start a new challenge, so he gets more opportunity to procrastinate:

Draw your favourite rodent (or any animal if you don't like rodents) with a moustache, monocle and tophat. You can add pipes, cups of tea etc. at pleasure.

Sorry for gravedigging.

Here's my submission. I don't know what the theme even is anymore.

(Edit: oh right, my favourite rodents.   ;) )

Its very pretty.
One thing I question is the length of the lemming hair.   Looks like Lemming & Lix are both female :)

Great pic!

I thought Lemmings were agendered or androgynous or something.

[13:07:58] <SimonN> the lemmings are all male, or mixed genders, or genderless, it's not entirely clear
[13:08:09] <NaOH> oh
[13:08:24] <NaOH> that would make spying on hot women difficult.

I'd always imagined the lemmings as having long hair... the way that blocker shakes his hair from side to side gives me the impression of a lot of bulk.

Or maybe it's a female lemming. I don't know.

High praise considering it's literally just hair and a shirt  8). For all you know, she doesn't even have a face.  ;P

I fixed it. Now the Lemming has a 'stache. Most likely a dudelem.

Also some other minor disqualifying details were remedied.

Legal info.
