so I have an avatar I want to use, but it's stretching to the full-possible size for the avatar space, which is a bit annoying and not good looking.

How do I upload the image and have it retain its original dimensions?

Great work on putting up your 50th post! :P

Anyway, I suggest you decrease the size before you upload it. I don't know how big the image has to be I'm afraid.

Actually, it sounds like his image is smaller than the 128x128 pixel space allowed.

Why would that be a problem? You can see from minimac's avatar and mine that the forum doesn't normally enlarge avatars to fill up the space.

Is it something to do with the file format perhaps?

It's an animated .gif, if that means anything.

I'll try again, but I suspect the same thing will happen. I'll leave it up, so you can see what I mean.

Well, to be honest I think you shouldn't use an animated gif as a forum avatar anyway; it distracts the eyes from the text and makes it harder and less pleasant to read posts.

Perhaps you could try downloading the image onto your computer, and then when setting your avatar, do the file upload option instead of using the URL (ie. not the "http:// ..." one).

I have no reason to think that it would make a difference, but of the few avatars I've seen so far on this thread (Proxima, Pooty, minimac), the image URLs indicates they were all file uploads rather than links.

To download an image, right-click on the image and select "Save Picture As..." if you're using IE.  Other browsers should have similar functionality.

[update: I've looked thru a few more people's profiles, and so far my theory is supported.  Of the few people that currently uses image links rather than file uploads for avatars, they always get a 128x128 size]

Hey Proxima, is there something special with your avatar (eg. it comes from some cartoon or video game or something), or is it just a generic spaceship/robot-looking thing?  Just curious. ;P
