Non-Lemmings Gaming / Minecraft
« on: October 25, 2010, 09:38:05 PM »
This game is already incredibly popular, despite still being in Alpha. Basically you get a huge sandbox world, where you dig for resources, build cool things and battle the undead. The graphics style is reminiscent of Lemmings 3D, with the landscape comically rendered in huge blocks, and with wacky physics to boot.

Sadly it isn't free (otherwise I'd be playing it already :P), and apparently the price is going up soon, so if this looks like your sort of thing then you might want to consider picking it up soon... and as a bonus, all future updates are free (at least that's what we're told) once you buy it. There are tutorials and Let's Play's galore on Youtube, so it's easy enough to find out more ;)

Challenges / Non-100% levels: How many more skills needed for 100%?
« on: October 16, 2010, 01:26:26 AM »
Here's a quick challenge to get us back into it. In each level where 100% is impossible (as far as we know) with the original skillset, your goal is to open up a 100% solution by adding as few skills as possible. All skills count equally. I'm aware that a lot of levels are trivial for this challenge (hence why it should be quick ;)) but hopefully there are some good ones in here too.

Example: Fun 6. You can't save everyone using blockers and bombers, so you need to add at least two skills to get 100%. Thus the score for this level is 2.

Scoring:
Blanks indicate levels where 100% is possible anyway (i.e. score is zero).
*Crazy 11 is not known to be possible, even with unlimited skills.

Challenges / Anyone up for some new challenges?
« on: October 15, 2010, 03:50:11 AM »
Study has finally quietened down a bit, so at last I have some free time to do some Lemmings stuff besides a few posts here and there (plus the occasional game of Civ 4, which has got me hooked again :-[). So I wonder if anyone here would be interested in some new challenges. I have a couple of ideas - some extensions of challenges we've done before, and some new concepts too. Plus there are some unfinished challenges too...

Anyone ???

Non-Lemmings Gaming / Karoshi
« on: August 04, 2010, 10:13:27 AM »
I just found this fantastic puzzle game series by Jesse Venbrux. It combines standard puzzle-platforming elements with some devious lateral thinking challenges, and the objective in each level is... well, somewhat unique. :D

The two on the right are browser games - there's some overlap with the downloadable games, but not much. None takes too long to play, if you know what you're doing. And Karoshi 2 has a level editor 8)

Anyone else played these?

General Discussion / Pac-Man on Google
« on: May 23, 2010, 11:06:55 AM »
You may or may not have noticed that there's a playable Pac-Man game on the Google homepage right now, to celebrate 30 years since it came out. I was never a fan of this game (it was well before my time) but I think this is pretty awesome. 8)

Here's hoping (dreaming?) they can do something like this for the 20th anniversary of Lemmings, which as we all know is next year...

Site Discussion / The old forum...

I just clicked a link to the old (read only) forum and got a 404 error from the Henri Watson site. What's going on here?

Site Discussion / Bug in "Show Posts"
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:49:37 PM »
When I go to "Show Posts" from another user's profile, and then click one of the options at the top (either Messages, Topics or Attachments), it switches over to my profile instead. This makes it impossible to browse topics started or attachments posted by other users. Is this a bug, or just the forum software trying to stop me being nosey?

And this part surely is a bug - if I'm not logged in when I try it, it comes up with this bizarre error message:

An Error Has Occurred!

General Discussion / Programming challenges
« on: October 16, 2009, 05:36:57 AM »
I don't believe I've told anyone this yet, but I'm learning to program in Java through a university course. Now, since the course is nearing its conclusion (in fact the last lecture was today), and we've really only covered the essential stuff, I'm looking for something to help me stay sharp and improve my skills. So, for the past couple of days, I've been looking for some "challenges" that are suited to a beginner-level programmer.

I found this site called Project Euler, which has heaps of really good puzzles that you have to write a program to solve. The trouble is, it's nothing but maths problems. Which is great (in fact it's fantastic, and I plan to continue with it), but I'm looking for something different. Something that's not just about numbers, and preferably something with an OO flavour (since that's what Java does).

Is anyone else interested in these? Does anyone know of a good challenge for someone at my level, or a place where I can find some?

Lemmings Main / WTF levels
« on: October 12, 2009, 07:53:53 AM »
Thanks to minimac for putting a name to this. To avoid taking Giga's thread too far off topic, I've decided to shift the discussion of this concept to a new thread.

What do you get when you take a perfectly normal level and copy it over into another tileset? A level that makes you go "WTF???", that's what :D

I've played around with these before, and I think they're awesome. If you have Lemmix, then these are easy to make. Here's how:

  • Open a level
  • Select everything (press "a") and copy (ctrl+c)
  • Open another Lemmix window and start a blank level in a different tileset
  • Paste into the new window
  • Copy over the skills, etc.

Things to be aware of:

  • Terrain objects in the original set that don't correspond to a tile in the new set will default to ID 0 and move to the upper-left corner of the map.
  • The resulting level is not guaranteed to be solvable - in fact, you might end up with no ground below the trapdoor :D
  • Some tilesets work better as a "source" than others. In general, sets with mostly small tiles are good sources, and those with lots of big pieces are better to copy terrain to. Of course, there are a huge number of possibilities, and there will be exceptions. Also, sets with relatively few tiles will suffer as a result of the first point above.

Attached is a pic of minimac's WTF level from the other thread. That's Taxing 2, WTF'd from Dirt to Fire, and still solvable too.

And if that (for whatever reason) didn't make you go "WTF?" then this surely will. You can take this a step further and create some truly bizarre things. If you manage to trick the editor into opening a level in the wrong mode, then it glitches and replaces some terrain pieces with random pixels. I call these "Super-WTF" levels. This isn't an exact science, and in fact I've noticed some inconsistencies in the resulting levels, but the method goes something like this:

  • Open some Original Lemmings levels in Original mode.
  • Switch to ONML mode and open some levels. (Still Original mode)
  • Switch back to Original mode and open an ONML level.

And if the editor doesn't crash, then you should end up with something like one of the two bottom pics below. (Those are Mayhem 21 and Tame 4, by the way - both solvable in this mode.) You can swap Original and ONML in the above instructions, or substitute in something else altogether.

Points to note:

  • Unlike regular "WTF" levels, you don't have free choice of tilesets unless you rename the graphics files. The tilesets are paired according to their filenames. Between original and ONML, you have: Dirt - Brick, Fire - Rock, Marble - Snow, Pillar - Bubble, Crystal - nothing (these can't be "super-WTF'd" so easily...)
  • If you don't open a level in the right tileset at the start, then this won't work. I recommend opening a level from every available tileset before switching modes.
  • If the level contains terrain pieces that don't have counterparts in the new set, you will get black squares with diagonal lines across them. Clicking on a level in the editor when these are present causes an error message, and may crash the editor. In playtest mode, these act as solid terrain. (By the way, has anyone seen a level called "Earthworks"? This level has these blocks.)
  • If the above happens with objects, no objects will display and you won't be able to do anything with the level.
  • Traps (non-constant ones especially) look completely wacky in this mode.
  • As far as I can tell, these can't be "saved". If you want to reproduce one of these exactly, you'll probably have to keep track of all the steps taken on the way to producing the level, due to the aforementioned inconsistencies. My guess is that it depends on the actual tiles present in the levels opened before the first "switch".

Now it's time to go off and experiment ;P

Tech & Research / Lemmings 2 glitches
« on: September 26, 2009, 11:59:35 PM »
Similar to the Glitches in Lemmings topic, this thread is for unexpected behaviour in Lemmings 2: The Tribes, on DOS, Amiga and other platforms.

To start with, here are a couple from the DOS version that were mentioned in the other thread:

  • Graphical bug where part of the closed trapdoor image appears over the open trapdoor. The cause is unknown and this has not been successfully reproduced yet, however screenshots are available here.
  • Invisible wall created when a blocker is counting down to exploding. Story and screenshots here.

Another glitch I have noticed is that when you use a diver on an upwards slope, it gets stuck in the terrain. If you make it dive again as soon as it gets up, it moves even further into the terrain. One could argue that this is the only worthwhile use for a diver ;P

Challenges / What skills can't you live without?
« on: September 13, 2009, 04:00:30 AM »
Since we started reviewing the Tame levels, it crossed my mind that there is only one skill that you're forced to use throughout all of Tame, that you can't pass the level without using - the builder on Tame 13. Aside from this one builder, you can avoid using each type of skill on every level, by using different skills instead. So, I would like to know: how does this situation look across the whole game?

Now for a (slightly technical) definition: The set of "skills you can't live without" on a level is the set of skills that is common to all solutions to the level - without using every skill in this set, you can't possibly beat the level.

EDIT: We now have a score for every level. Well done guys!

(Total skill counts in brackets.)

Level Design / The level design game!
« on: September 03, 2009, 07:32:32 AM »
I had this idea that rather than creating a level and challenging people to solve it, creating the level could itself be the challenge. The idea is this: You post a description of a level (preferably one that DOESN'T YET EXIST), in terms of a number of conditions. The first person to post a level that meets these conditions is the winner and can then post a description of another level. I have no idea how well this will work, but we'll see. :D

Rules

I don't want to weigh this down with too many rules, but I fear this game is going to require rather a lot of them in order to function... It's all fairly straightforward though.

Setting a challenge

  • The conditions can be anything you like, as long as they are objective (i.e. not subject to opinion) and possible within the limitations of Lemmix / DOS Custlemm.
  • You must build the level yourself first as a proof of concept (and thus be able to provide it if requested). This level must also comply with the rules for completing a challenge (see below).
  • Be very careful to specify exactly what you want and avoid "backroutes"...

Completing a challenge

  • You can build the level in any of the 10 original tilesets, unless otherwise specified by the challenge conditions.
  • It doesn't need to look good (preferably it should though) and it doesn't need a title, as long as it works.
  • The level must:
    - meet all of the specified conditions
    - be solvable
    - have 80 or fewer lemmings (so as to avoid crashing in Custlemm)
    - have a save requirement of at least 1 lemming
    - pass the level validator test (i.e. <=400 terrain, <=32 objects, <=32 steel, objects and steel aligned with DOS grid)

  • You should be able to describe the solution (if it's not obvious) - preferably with a replay, but other methods are OK.
  • If you know of a level already in existence that meets the criteria, you can post that as your solution. But keep in mind that the point of the game is to push the boundaries in new ways, not just dig up old levels ;)
  • Post your new challenge straight away after solving one - don't wait for confirmation. EDIT: This has been changed. Please wait for confirmation before posting a new challenge. (You can call a conditional "open floor" when you post a solution, if you want.)

Here is the first challenge. I don't like the way floaters always seem to outlive the regular guys, so I want to see a level where...
  • In any solution to the level, all the floaters die (NOT left on the level at time up) and all other lemmings exit.
  • There are at least 5 lemmings, and at least 5 floaters available.

Can't let you get away with 0 floaters and 100% saved now. :P No restrictions on the other skills. And note that "any solution" means you're allowed to waste skills too.

Lemmings Main / Quirks in Lemmings levels
« on: September 02, 2009, 12:23:43 AM »
This is the thread for things in the original levels of the Lemmings games that are unusual and unexpected - "quirks", if you will. To start with, here are some from Lemmings, Oh No and Holiday Lemmings:

Fun 21 / Mayhem 26 - Steel objects below the bridge and exit. These don't match up with any steel terrain, and much of their area of effect is cancelled by the water trigger areas.
                            - Water object placed slightly off the left side of the level that shows in Lemmix but not DOS.

Mayhem 1 - Much of the steel platform beneath the exit has no steel objects over it and so can be dug through - and thanks to steel glitches, it is certainly possible to get in there.

Crazy 15 - Second trapdoor hidden behind the first one.

Crazy 18, Crazy 19, Wild 18 - Gap between the water and the bottom of the screen. It's only one pixel, so it's not that easy to see, but if you look closely you'll notice that the terrain extends down slightly further than the water. On Wild 18, there is another water object placed slightly lower, right next to one of these slightly-too-high ones.

Hail 7 - There are no steel objects. Technically this doesn't matter since the only skills available are builders and a climber, but with an 80-lemming nuke you can tear through this quite easily.

Hail 12 - Steel object towards the right of the maze area which serves no purpose at all, since there is no steel terrain and no skills available other than builders.

Lemmings Main / Top 5, Bottom 5
« on: August 31, 2009, 12:32:40 AM »
I know the question of favourite and least favourite levels has come up in the past, but it's been some time since the last one and I'm sure some opinions have changed since then. And besides that, I never mentioned which levels are my favourites. :) So here it is in a different format (rather than just listing some levels you like or hate). Of all the original Lemmings, Oh No and Xmas levels, which 5 do you like the most, and which 5 do you hate with a passion? (EDIT: You can include levels from other lemmings games too, either in the same list or a separate one.)

Here are mine.

BOTTOM 5 ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley" />

5: Tricky 16 - Luvly Jubly
Multiple bomber timing that changes every time you go deeper into the grid. Plus I can't stand the name.

4: Taxing 14 - Hunt the Nessy....
Mind-numbing tedium.

3: Taxing 13 - Upsidedown World
It's like you have to learn to play the game again by a different set of rules. Incredibly frustrating to see a plan fail for no apparent reason, right at the end, and then have too few skills left to save it.

2: Wicked 2 - Inroducing SUPERLEMMING
What have you done?! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE???!!!

1: Hail 3 - And a Happy New Year!
Like Hunt the Nessy, but even worse. Uninspired and poorly put together.

TOP 5

5: Mayhem 3 - It's hero time!
A quick and fun level to play. Good skill set and clever solution.

4: Taxing 6 - Compression Method 1
Gather 'em up, release 'em and squish 'em. Fun to figure out, and fun to watch.

3: Tricky 22 - Turn around young lemmings!
The original turnaround level. Simple and effective.

2: Havoc 9 - AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!
Very well designed multitasking level that gets progressively harder to keep up with as your builder gets further away.

1: Havoc 10 - Flow Control
Simple, unique and brilliant - a remarkable contrast to most other levels in ONML :P

Lemmings Main / You know you've played too much Lemmings when...
« on: August 17, 2009, 11:14:33 AM »
I found this thread once when I was looking through the old (really old) forums, and I figured now is a good time to bring it back since... well, you know.

You know you've played too much Lemmings when...

You tell people that your house was built using the brick tileset.
Your standard response when someone asks you for help is "Just a minute!"
You keep a bear trap and 10 ton weight handy, just in case.
You have a flashing "OUT" sign above your front door.

and, of course...
You take a week of in an attempt to preserve your sanity.
