Lemmings Main / Re: Backroute
« on: October 30, 2011, 10:30:00 PM »
What I hate is when you have a good clean design, with a nice-looking solution, and then you find a backroute that forces you to clutter it with extra terrain and steel pieces.
That's the beauty of level designing!  Lemmings are "incredible contortionists", as the manual says, which forces the level design to learn to "say" exactly what he means.  According to Mike Dailly's webpage level designer Dave Jones had a lot of trouble with this, and a lot of feedback from his colleagues.

I gotta say it, though, there are plenty more examples.  "PoP YoR ToP!!!" and "PoP TiL YoU DrOp!", both of which clearly were meant to use exploders and both of which can be passed without using a single one.  "KEEP ON TRUCKING" was likely meant to use all its blockers, but if you stretch your builders you can save three blockers.

In DOS Original lemmings how many Tricky levels have water?
I'm cheating with The Lemmings Encyclopedia, but am I really?  I've played the DOS version before so I know some of the differences.

Tricky levels 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 16, 17(?), 19, 22(?), 30.

I guessed on some, please tell me if I'm right.

Identify as many traps and other features from both original Lemmings (aka Lemmings 1) and ONML that are never seen outside of one level.  (For example, the boulder-smashing trap is unique to Mayhem 30, Rendevous at the Mountain.)

Hi, sorry to resurrect this topic if no one wants to, but the links are broken.  Where do I get the levels?

Yup, I well remember it taking me a very long time to figure that one out, though it looks so simple when you know the trick. A level that long remains in the memory. (Though I would rank the one I'm about to review as being up there with this and Level 10 as well.)

Crazy 8 - KEEP ON TRUCKING

80 lemmings
Save 93% (75)
Release rate 1
4 minutes

1 bomber, 4 blockers, 7 builders, 3 bashers, 3 miners, 1 digger

Good: Interesting and intimidating terrain that makes you consider different approaches and how to make the best use of your small complement of builders.
Bad: The impossibility of the lower route is a bit too obvious (though it's all too likely that were it not so, the designers would have inadvertently left in a backroute using that way :P ) and, again, too hard for its position.
They "would have"?  But there IS a backroute to that level; it's the direct-but-painful way, and it saves all but two.

It's one basher [i.e. on Tame 16] and no other terrain-destruction skills, but you can use the other skills. The challenge was originally proposed with no save requirement, but 100% is attainable.
Is that a one-basher minimum or maximum?  Because I think I can do it with NO bashers.

Lemmings Main / Marquees
« on: March 16, 2010, 01:17:51 AM »
Hi, what are the marquees for Lemmings, ONML, Xmas Lemmings, Holiday Lemmings 1993, and Holiday 1994 - all Amiga versions?  Like, you know how the first one talks about "loss of sanity, hair, and sleep" and "the needs of the many" and all that?

[snip]By the way, if you're interested in playing my Tame challenges, I put them into levelpacks so you don't have to go through and change the skills yourself. Click the link in my sig and look for "CSTame1" and "CSTame2".
[snip][/quote]If you ask me, you don't have to change anything, just keep track of what you're doing.
