Site Discussion / spam posts on the up again
« on: May 17, 2011, 08:03:02 PM »
Looks like we're getting hit by spam postings again.  They've even managed to look less "spammy" in form, which of course just makes it a bigger waste of time as it takes slightly longer for the reader to realize it's spam. ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley" />

So much for the "what color is lemming's hair?" test. :-\ ;P

Site Discussion / what's this karma thing?

 ???

Never noticed it before, I think it's part of the forum updates.  I have a guess about it but best let Adam actually explain.

...it isn't phishing email so don't worry, but it is something I accidentally did in Yahoo!.  Feel free to ignore the email; in fact I've been told that for at least one person, the email automatically landed in their spam folder anyway, which is really funny and not a good sign for whatever Yahoo's going for with this new feature of theirs I know nothing about. :P :-\

Man am I busy nowadays.  But fortunately I have scrapped together enough time here and there, and now I finally have some time to post some interesting findings interspersed in my past few weeks of chaos.

I'll start with this post, a wonderful technique to frame-step in Lemmings 2 w/o the pain of pressing Spacebar quickly followed by P, and then go from there with a new-ish Lemmings 2 glitch (another thread) and then some unexpected challenge results made possible (yet other threads, with movies attached!).

So, how to make DOSBox do Spacebar+P for you.  I've finally discovered the keymapper in DOSBox, and more importantly, figured out how to use it, and found out a neat way you can configure it so that when you press an otherwise useless key like [ in Lemmings 2, DOSBox will translate that for you into Spacebar followed immediately by P.  Voila, frame-stepping using a single keystroke!

Here's a step-by-step guide to turn your [ key into the frame-step key for L2.  Feel free to substitute [ with whatever other key suits you, as long as it's not a key that L2 already uses (otherwise you lose the use of that key in DOSBox and thus in L2):

1) run DOSBox
2) activate keymapper screen by pressing Ctrl+F1
3) click on the Spacebar key under the "keyboard layout" graphics in the keymapper
4) at the bottom you should see EVENT: key_space and BIND: Key space.  Click "Del" at the right until the BIND: line disappears.
5) now click "Add", then press [ on your keyboard.
6) click "Add" again and then press Spacebar on your keyboard
7) now click on the P key in the "keyboard layout" graphics
8.) click "Del" to remove BIND:ings for key_p
9) click "Add" and then press [ on your keyboard
10) click "Add" again and then press p on your keyboard
11) now click on the [ key in the "keyboard layout" graphics
12) click "Del" to remove the original BIND:ings for the key we're trying to re-assign (the [ key)
13) finally, click "Save" button at the bottom to make the changes permanent (so you don't have to repeat this ritual every time you start DOSBox), and then click "Exit"

Test it out in DOSBox's "DOS prompt" screen by pressing the re-assigned [ key.  You should see it generate a space followed by p in DOSBox.  And if you try it in L2 while paused, you'll see that it does exactly what you expect when you press Spacebar followed by P the hard way--it frame-steps the game by one frame!

Cool! 8) Except as it turns out, it's not 100% reliable--once out of like 50 times or so of using it, the game may fail to pause after the frame-step! ><img src=" title="Angry" class="smiley" /> :XD: Needless to say this can be extremely painful since unless you have quick reflexes and respond with the P key, such an encounter of bad luck will probably ruin whatever you were trying to do that needed frame-stepping in the first place.  But it happens infrequently enough that most of the time you'll praise it rather than curse it--precision moves not involving the fan can now be accomplished much more reliably in L2.

Another deficiency with this technique is that keyboard autorepeat doesn't work for the unusually re-assigned key:  that is, press and hold [ doesn't auto-repeat the framestepping.  Instead DOSBox generates one Space keystroke, followed by a stream of only P keystrokes for the auto-repeat.  I'll have to investigate more and see if there's another way to map the keys to get around this deficiency (though I'm not optimistic).  But still, except in cases like frame-stepping through the Medieval dragon, this deficiency shouldn't be too big a deal for the occasional frame-stepping needs.

Figure I might as well start a thread for this type of challenge also.

This is of course modeled after <a href="index66e2.html?topic=181.0" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">namida's "Fewest different skills levels can be beaten with" challenge</a> for Lemmings-1 based games.  The idea here is to minimize the different types of skills needed to gold a level, rather than the actual count of skills.  This means that a gold solution using 60 rock climbers and 60 swimmers is better for this challenge than a solution that uses 1 stomper, 1 platformer and 1 roper, because the former uses only 2 types of skills (rock climber+swimmer) while the latter uses 3 types, even though the total skills count is 120 vs 3.

The nice thing about this type of challenge over the "skills you can't live without" is that with "skills you can't live without", sometimes it ends up being an exercise in analysis rather than creative level solving.  When a level has such a good variety of skills that you can easily substitute one type of skill for another, you can easily end up with no skills being essential, and you end up with a result that's purely an analysis exercise rather than something interesting from a solution standpoint.  Whereas in this challenge, you at least have the additional challenge of restricting the variety of skills to use, and see how far you can push in that direction.

Again, no idea how successful this will be, but let's give it a try anyway.

Results will be reported in the form of combinations of skill types.  Combinations with same number of types of skills are equal for this challenge, so you may see a result listed as (say) "roper+stomper, roper+bomber, platformer+roper" since all three are 2-type combos.  Just because a combo isn't listed doesn't necessarily mean it's not possible. It could just mean no one has found or reported a gold solution using that combo.

Again, I'll start off with a few results. Again, unreported combos are simply that, unreported.  I'm fairly sure for example that Cavelem 1 probably has a builders-only gold solution and possibly a stompers-only gold solution, but haven't confirmed neither at the moment. [edit: confirmed both]

Challenges / [Lemmings 2] What skills can't you live without for gold?
« on: March 26, 2010, 02:03:01 AM »
This is modeled after <a href="indexa75c.html?topic=170.0" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">Clam Spammer's "skills you can't live without" challenge</a> for Lemmings-1 based games.  Conceptually, you're focusing on minimizing the types of skills used and the number of one individual type of skill.  I've no idea how fruitful this type of challenge will be for Lemmings 2.  Hopefully it will still be fun and interesting.

Definition: The set of "skills you can't live without" on a level is the set of skills that is common to <strong>all <span class="bbc_u">gold</span> solutions</strong> to the level - without using every skill in this set, you can't possibly achieve gold on the level.

So for example, if you find a gold solution that uses only 1 roper, plus some number of builders and other skills, and another gold solution that uses only 1 builder, a few ropers, and a different bunch of other skills, the result for that level would be "1 roper, 1 builder".  Your general approach would be to minimizing the number of <em>types</em> of skills to employ, finding as many disparate combinations of skill-types as you can.  And then to minimize the number of skills used of a particular type, for each skill-type that appears to be common to all gold solutions.

Unlike Clam Spammer's challenge thread, I'm not including totals here, because different levels usually have fairly disparate types of skills, making the total not very meaningful.

I've started things off with a few results that are obvious enough for me to come up with at a glance.

(Note: <em>none</em> means there are no skills that are common to all gold solutions to the level.  <em>no results reported</em> means no one has looked at the level yet to come up with any numbers.)

General Discussion / The Birthday Thread
« on: December 10, 2009, 01:45:19 AM »
It seems wasteful to create a new topic for each birthday, so here's the thread for all birthday greetings.

Today (December 9) is Proxima's birthday.  Happy birthday! :birthday:

For fun, I tried to come up with a level using Proxima's name but just couldn't come up with anything interesting enough fast enough. :(  Then again, I didn't check the birthday calendar until like now.  Oh well, at least I have a week's head start for doing something similar with Insane Steve.

Other Projects / LemmixPlayer ccexplore updates
« on: November 10, 2009, 03:21:25 PM »
This is less exciting than what namida did, but now that I got help from him and Eric in getting LemmixPlayer to compile, I'm finally able to make fixes to some of the game-mechanics-related issues, in particular:

1) the incorrect entrance ordering for 3 entrances for any styles besides original DOS Lemmings
2) inability to replay ClamSpammer's steel-digging glitch correctly

I've attached the LemmixPlayer.exe I've compiled with the fixes, which I've also taken the liberty to update the version number from 0.8.0.0 to 0.8.0.1.  Bug #1 is N/A for this though, since it's only original DOS Lemmings; I'll try compiling the other LemmixPlayers, and the editor, later.  That said, the fix for #1 is a one-line fix so I'm pretty confident I didn't screw anything up.

Bug #2 on the other hand turned out to be a little trickier to fix than I originally thought.  The basic issue is that while the replays record the mouse cursor position when skill assignments are made, it doesn't record whether the right mouse button is held down, although it does record the exact lemming that receives the skill assignment.  The approach I ended up using for the fix is to basically have the game first "test" the skill assigment using the recorded cursor position, assuming the right mouse button wasn't down, and if the lemming it would've assigned the skill to doesn't match with the replay record, it will try again assuming right mouse button was down.

I believe I've handled the code changes correctly for this, but I would definitely appreciate some extra testing on this:

1) Make sure when NOT in replays, skill assignment are working as expected for all 8 skills, and for both with and without holding down the right mouse button.

2) Pick a bunch of your favorite replays and make sure they still play correctly.  Try to cover all 8 skills and to include ones that use the right mouse button.

=================

I've also attached my changes to LemGame.pas that fixes the two bugs noted above, in case other people are working on compiling their special versions of LemmixPlayer and would like to incorporate my fixes.  That said, it might not be a bad idea to first wait for some additional testing from other people to make sure that my fix for #2 doesn't break anything.

[edit: removed attachment, new update available in later post]

General Discussion / recommendations on free file-hosting sites?
« on: September 29, 2009, 02:21:00 AM »
Yahoo! Geocities is closing down by end of October this year, so I'll greatly appreciate it if you guys have any recommendations on what else I could use to host files like Lemmings levels, solutions, screenshots, etc., that sort of thing for free.  I suppose there's the Lemmings File Archive, but there may be cases where I would want an alternate location, particular for files meant to be shared to only a few people and are subjected to changes (eg. levels in development or something).

I know the free ones tend to have annoying popup ads, that's not too much of an issue as long as it's not ridiculous.

Thanks!

42
I just discovered a major bug with Lemmix/LemmixPlayer in its handling of entrance order for 3-entrance levels.  Instead of A B C B A B C B..., Lemmix is currently doing A B C A A B C A.  This needs to be fixed ASAP.

For now, to re-create the correct ordering for a level, you can edit the level by adding a 4th entrance.  Make sure it has the highest index of all entrances, and place it at the same location as the 2nd entrance.

Lemmings Main / links to archives of old furums please?
« on: May 06, 2007, 03:23:04 AM »
As some of you old-timers here know, the Lemmings forum had changed places several times, and sometimes existing posts are not carried over during a switch.  Once in a while, I might want to search for stuff in those old posts from the old forums.

So, I'd like someone to make this topic sticky, and then have someone here reply with the URLs to archives of the old forums.  Thanks!  (In particular, right now I'm looking for posts that were made by Mike, back when he's active in the forums.)

Site Discussion / PMs on this forum
« on: August 30, 2006, 07:30:19 AM »
It looks like there's only an "inbox" and an "outbox"; there is no "sent items" box or the like.  This makes it rather difficult to tell whether something is sent and received.  I tried sending a PM but after sending, there's nothing in the outbox so either it must've gotten sent immediately, or it totally screwed up.

I guess this is probably a forum limitations, but I'm mentioning this in case someone knows of some settings I can adjust to improve things.

Now that Eric's Lemmix (alpha version 0.0.7.0 to be exact) has the ability to record and play back solutions, there's now a way to share solutions to DOS Lemmings levels without making huge movie captures with DOSBox!

I will start uploading some Lemmix-recorded solutions to the following location:

http://www.geocities.com/guestlevels/lemmings/challenges

To play them back you need to do the following:

1) download and unzip the solutions somewhere.̆ The files with the ".lrb" extension are the recorded solutions.̆ The .txt files are the recorded solutions in a more human-readable form, in case you're curious.

2) Open the corresponding level in Lemmix.̆ You'll find Tricky 23 in level000.dat of DOS original Lemmings, and Havoc 10 at dlvel000.dat of DOS ONML.̆ Once you open the DAT file, Lemmix will present a pop up window which lists by title all the levels in the levelpak, and you can select the one you want to load it.

3) Once the correct level is loaded, press F2 to go into playtest mode.

4) Press shift+R (ie. capital R).̆ Lemmix will ask you to open a replay file.̆ Select the .lrb file for the level you are on.

5) Now sit back and enjoy the show!̆ Lemmix will automatically restart the level with automatic replay when you opened the lrb file.̆ You can pause and unpause at any point in the replay, if you want to examine certain parts of it more carefully or slowly.

6) Press ESC at any time to quit and go back to editor mode.

--------------

I've uploaded the 79/80 Tricky 23 solution and the 17/21 Havoc 10 solution so far.

I'm planning to do the 100% Wicked 6 at some point, though since I can't find any notes I written down for that level, I might have to figure out the solution again from scratch, so that might take some time.

Feel free to drop requests here on which other solutions you'd like to see!̆ There will be a few solutions that I won't make available for now, mainly because I might want to use similar techniques in my own CustLemm levels, but it doesn't hurt to ask anyway.

If you have any trouble installing Lemmix I'll be glad to help, as is Eric.̆ I will also answer any questions you may have regarding the solutions posted.
