I've got a compromise between claws and no claws - ones that are slightly blunt and are retractable so they don't get in the way.

Sorry, Minimac. 'OP' is 'Original Post(er)'. I was talking to Giga. I'll edit my message for clarity.

And I'm not advocating hiding behind things like Dyslexia and Asperger's as an excuse in the slightest, by the way. I may as well be honest, I apparently have been diagnosed with the latter too*. However, I rather intensely dislike the idea of having a problem I can't fix, or a label for that matter, so I tend not to consider myself a 'sufferer' at all. I seem to do quite alright without all that 'accept yourself as you are' business, since that only leads to a recursive placebo effect in my eyes.

* That might be worth starting a poll on as well, considering the number of professed cases...

I require a little help, possibly detrimental to you: I'm trying to break away from Lemmings a little and make the species I based on them my own, and I have a few ideas but remain a little stuck. I have the basics down (though these can change, and if you have any genuinely good ideas that conflict I may use them instead). For example, I have their sexual dimorphism worked out:

The males are mostly scouts, gatherers and scavengers while the females mostly stay put, but hunt and dig when necessary, care for young, and lead the small clans that form in each 'warren'. So they're matriarchal, because I felt like it.

Something I am figuring out, however is the sort of shape the head should be. They eat a mostly herbivorous diet, but eat meat readily when it's available.

However, I'm trying to find a head shape that looks fairly aesthetically pleasing as well as 'accurate', feel free to sketch up anything unique and throw it my way. I've quite taken to the idea of them having fur, which at the moment is suede-like and transparent, but I'm considering changing the colour of it, and/or adding markings. I also added ears. The shape of them could change...

Another is the paws. These have been driving me mad.

I like the mittens because they sort of work since they're a burrowing species (no gaps for soil to get through) and they're easy to draw, but I feel like I ought to change them.

Last but not least, a new name. I'm having the most trouble with this one, as nothing I come up with fits at all. Any ideas on this front that sound even remotely right are very, very welcome, as are any other physiological details you can come up with that sound reasonable. Ready? Go!

In direct reply to the first post in here:

Yes. Yes I do. You know what I do about it? Go on. Guess.

I deal with it. I look at the flaws in the idea, try to iron them out, put them down in drawings and writing , try again, and if that doesn't work I try to do what I want or hope for myself as far as I can. If I mess something up then I ask for help politely and civilly. Quite a radical concept, no?
And don't pretend like we're treating you badly because of your age. I was the same age as you when I came here for the first time. I was treated with greater respect than you because I wrote to the best of my abilities (I still do) and didn't expect people to do as I said (I still don't). Ironically, knowing your place and treating others with respect is probably the best way to earn respect. Remember that.

Plus I'm curious; do you have some sort of disability which means you can't type well? It's okay if you do, and if you tell us if you do people won't be so harsh on you.

You should know that the origin of Google's name has nothing to do with your rationalization.  Also, if you actually check the dictionary, it's really a bit of stretch to go from the meaning of the words you listed above to the meaning of "search", except maybe in the specific context of a horny guy looking for Internet porn. :P Is that why Google succeeded?  I dare not speculate. ;)

Anyway, I think you got it the other way round.  The name "Google" became a household term because of the success of Google as a search engine (that is, enough people have found its search results to be good), not the other way around.
I do actually know the story of Google's name - I'm not talking about why they chose it, but why it ended up working. And if success is solely based on quality of results, flawed engines like Bing would not exist for very long at all.
Think about it, though. Even if, say, Yahoo had become this successful, do you think it'd have managed to practically get into the dictionary? You'd feel a bit stupid saying you're going to yahoo something, even if it did do that well, because it simply wouldn't sound right.
What I was getting at was that all those words are variations on 'look', so saying what sounds like another variation would feel fairly natural.
In sum, even if it was the same caliber as Google, would you be happy to say "I'll bing it"?

Who on Earth chose the name 'Bing'? They ought to be taken out and shot, whoever they may be. It sounds ridiculous anyway, and it doesn't work as a search engine name - since there are few differences between engines beside names it can be said the name is everything.
That's why I think Google succeeded. It sounds like 'goggle', 'ogle', 'agog' and other such words while remaining unique, so it sounds like searching for something while being different, so it easily got verbed - which is a disaster for some companies but perfect for a search engine.

'Bing' just sounds like the bell on the door of a small and disreputable shop or, on a good day, a decrepit computer. Possibly punch-card operated.

General Discussion / Re: Why did you choose what your avatar is?

Mine's a greek letter, the lowercase phi, standing for the golden section or golden mean, 0.618, complementing uppercase Phi, 1.618 - a proportion believed to be inherently pleasing to the human eye, and frequently repeated in nature and art, so as someone who considers themself both a scientist and an artist I felt it was perfect. It's my avatar on a lot of other sites, as well.
I could go into detail as to why I use the colour purple a great deal, but I'm probably rambling already, so I'll stop. =P
