Reviews / Random Review Thread!
October 03, 2009, 02:43:07 AM
This is basically an open floor for reviewing official levels - whether they've been reviewed in other topics or not!

You can review a level, and give as little or as much information as you want!  It doesn't matter what level - if you want to review it, by all means review it!  But if you've already reviewed a certain level, don't redo the review in this topic, unless you are looking at a different platform.  For an example of what you can do, if 30 people all wanted to review Lemmings, Dos, Fun 30, they could review it as long as it is their first time reviewing the level on these forums.  HOWEVER, these should be in each review.

[Game] - [Platform] - [Category/Tribe] - [Level #] - [Level Name]

Good:  [praise level]
Okay:  [While optional, I like to put these in my reviews]
Bad:  [What makes you want to scream!]

Lemmings 2 - Amiga - Classic - 5 - The Magnificent Severn

Good:  Nice design
Okay:  Although the level could be made smaller, to minimize walking, without changing the solution.
Bad:  Big race against the clock.  Shouldn't "Let's see what I can do to shave a few seconds off this" be for challenges?

General Discussion / Oh No! More FAIL
September 27, 2009, 10:48:47 PM
I read on Slashdot that the Australian government is trying to make unhackable computers.

http://www.lemmingsforums.com/Smileys/lemmings/party.gif" alt="" title="Party Time!" class="smiley" />  Get your popcorn and press that refresh button, it'll probably fail.  I guess no matter where you go, that place's government's judgment can be an la-la-land.

Lemmings Main / Cheapo Revival (remake, maybe?)
September 27, 2009, 08:30:33 PM
I'd love it if Cheapo was revived, and redone.
This list includes things that were added in.

SALVAGE
Formats
.mod support

SCRAP
Current title screen

ADD
Cross-platform support
Support of formats similar to .mod (ex. .xm, .it)

Yeah, it would probably have to be recoded.

Help & Guides / Cannot beat Classic 9.
September 23, 2009, 01:12:40 AM
The problem is the poor design.  I know what to do, but I can't do it because of the design flaw in the game physics, combined with the fact that I'm pretty sure the arrow keys wouldn't select lemmings properly until much later.  So, first of all, so help can occur, where does Lemmings 2 store saved data?

EDIT:  Hmmm, now that I think about it...  if I learn to program, there might be a chance that I could get into the Lemmings 2 code and fix the issue making the level (nearly) impossible.
If hex editor work can be done, a few things that could be used to get a fix might be lowering release rate, allowing the loss of 1 lemming for gold, or a few more builders might help.

Level Design / Level designing question...
September 22, 2009, 04:38:36 AM
You know how I want to make a game?  I've read on the old forums some people edited levels with a hex editor as opposed to LemEdit or Lemmix; would that be good practice?

Challenges / Maximum Percentage for Lemmings Levels?
September 21, 2009, 12:51:52 AM
This is going to be QUITE a wall of text, isn't it?

We're going to find the maximum percentage that can be saved on official levels!  Some of these records probably already exist, but the problem is, sometimes you have to hunt them down.  So here they are.  I will do my best to keep this list up to date.

If all levels in a category have been tested, to shorten the list, "All levels in this category solved" will be added, and the ones resulting in 100% will be removed from the list.

Oh, yes, and for fun in DOS, I'm covering them all, and updating the post as I go.
LEMMINGS
DOS VERSION RECORDS

FUN
Fun 3:  94% (Lose 3)
Fun 6:  96% (Lose 2)

Oh No!  More Lemmings!

TAME

All 100%!

I can't seem to find good tutorials online, so I'll just throw this one out there.

What's the coding needed to make a game (please explain the structure as well for me!)?  I am currently considering these three languages:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_Sharp_(programming_language)" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">C#
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_(programming_language)" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">C
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_(programming_language)" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">Java

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_(programming_language)#Absent_features" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">This fact about C kind of concerns me, but I don't know if it would have an effect on any of my projects...

Yeah, I'm a Wikipedia freak...  get over it...

Things I need to do...

I would like to make the game somewhat of a cross between "Cave Story" and Metroid Games...

Features from Cave Story:
Doors/Teleporters
Dialogue/Signs
Boss Health Bars

Features from Metroid:
Metroid has a different door system from Cave Story, so I do want Metroid-style doors as well.  However, of the doors that do not require any upgrades to get through, I shall use Cave Story's occasional Metroidish doors (imagine the Blue Doors in Super Metroid, minus the hatch).
Stackable upgrades?

Features from both:
Platformer
Doesn't Metroid have a shaking display during the Self Destruct sequences (in Super Metroid, at least)?  I KNOW Cave Story has this at its last area...
Enemies (DUH)
Upgrades, of course
Multiple Endings...

So, how overambitious is this sounding? http://www.lemmingsforums.com/Smileys/lemmings/XD.gif" alt=":XD:" title="XD" class="smiley" />

BTW...

Okay, judging by the topic of out of place levels, ONML needs a cleanup.

First of all what levels go where in the packs?  Don't worry about names.

Then, we need to decide what the order of levels for the game should be.  This could also help a little for the difficulty curve issue.

Note:  On the final list of where levels should go, let's post the names of the levels along with where we want them.

Help & Guides / Lemmix bugs (not game glitches)
September 14, 2009, 12:15:00 AM
Sometimes, if you have a level saved in C:\[path to lemmix folder]\[another folder], Lemmix gets the paths in LemmixSyles.ini (or something like that) mixed up until the program is closed and reopened, which is probably the cause of a problem I posted (but I deleled the topic, because it fixed itself).

By the way, if anyone wants to know what the actual problem was?  It was that Windows sucks.  http://www.lemmingsforums.com/Smileys/lemmings/XD.gif" alt=":XD:" title="XD" class="smiley" />  The previous glitch was caused by a copy/paste error in Windows when Lemmix complained that it could not find the GROUNDxO/VGAGRX files, so I pasted them into the folder where the levels were saved.

Site Discussion / Feature request...
September 07, 2009, 06:01:30 PM
Would it be possible for a feature allowing users to merge two of their own topics together be possible?

Another challenge thread, guys!  I will do my best to keep a good list up this time.

Some levels do not give enough time for you to not bother increasing the release rate.  What levels are they?  I believe the Just a Minute levels fall into this category, but please don't jump to conclusions without testing.

LEVELS THAT CANNOT BE BEATEN WITH DEFAULT RELEASE RATE

Heaven Can Wait (We Hope!!!)
Just a Minute (both)
We all fall down (Taxing, Mayhem)

Reviews / Oh No! More Lemmings - Level Reviews
September 05, 2009, 05:08:49 PM
There were complaints about doing ONML level reviews in our normal topic, so do them here.

We have already finished Tame 1 and 2 (Down and out Lemmings, Rent-a-Lemming)

I'm also adding a useful rule from the Custom Level Review Game:  if no one reviews for 48 hours (2 days), then you can review again even if you are the one who did the last review.

Who wants to do level three?
#93
I deleted the original topic...  instead of doing the changes now, let's wait a bit for the levels to be chosen out to see how many we need.

Site Discussion / What is a "Hidden User"?
August 10, 2009, 06:52:02 PM
I've seen this around but have no idea what it means.

Sorry 'bout the size.  http://www.lemmingsforums.com/Smileys/lemmings/tongue.gif" alt=":P" title="Tongue" class="smiley" />

I'll try and get a smaller shot (without Zoom Desktop?)

Got a smaller one!

Help & Guides / How to install Lemmini on Linux
August 10, 2009, 02:49:38 AM
I was having trouble getting Lemmini to install on Linux, but I found a way to get it to work.

Step 1:  Download the .jar file from the site.
Step 2:  Open the terminal.
Step 3:  Run the command
Code: [Select]
java -jar /this/is/the/case/sensitive/path/to/lemmini.jarStep 4:  Install according to instructions.

Reviews / Custom Level Review Game
August 02, 2009, 06:02:51 PM
The same rules as the other review thread...
before it was changed to open review.

I believe minimac wanted his levels reviewed, right?
Let's start with his pack, http://camanis.net/lemmings/levelpacks.php?pack=41" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">lm set01.

Now, to fix any possible problems being ran into here...
Slightly modifying the rules set.

RULES
  • You may not review your own levels.
  • We cannot do the same pack twice.
  • You cannot do two levels in a row including across packs unless 48 hours (2 days) have elapsed since the previous review.
  • We cannot do two packs in a row by the same author without the author's permission.  This is to give them a chance to do some reviews.  HOWEVER, while the author of a pack may tell us to review one of their packs, they cannot tell us to review two of their packs in a row.  This is up to people who didn't make the pack.  Remember, other people want their packs reviewed too.
  • The current pack must be completed before moving on unless otherwise noted.

I'll start.

lm set01 - Level 1 - Bash to Victory
http://camanis.net/lemmings/levelpacks.php?shot&level=5478aba20d63c73b4f158ecc56979daff3ba40ec" class="bbc_link" target="_blank">http://camanis.net/lemmings/levelpacks.php?shot&level=5478aba20d63c73b4f158ecc56979daff3ba40ec" alt="" class="bbc_img" />
Good:  Level design is nice, good little tutorial level that should be possible to come up with challenges on due to having 20 of each skill.
Bad:  Needs decorative terrain for the rest of the level.

Help & Guides / TGA Sound in ONML/Holiday Lemmings?
July 30, 2009, 06:29:24 PM
How do I get TGA sound in these versions of Lemmings?  Don't mind having to use TGA graphics as long as I get the sound.

(NeoLemmix equivalent)

We are now back on required, then....

Since I plan on doing all versions and maybe a few clones, let's organize these by game.  What's the least amount of time needed to beat official levels?
This is for the Original Game, Ohno more Lemmings!  and Holiday lemmings.
The clock apparently is slower in DOS, and physics may vary from port to port, so we'll do a separate one for every version.
Please mention a version of the game to get it added.
I won't start a chart until someone does one in that version.
I have Linux DOSbox, so I'm going to start with DOS.

Format is time used.

About once every month the results will be released in a spreadsheet and you can view them. Two are provided - one in the MS Excel format, and another that's in an open document format (for those of us who don't like proprietary formats).  EDIT:  May be able to provide PDF instead.

Help & Guides / DOSBox 0.73 for Linux (Ubuntu)?
July 15, 2009, 05:17:35 PM
I can't find a download on the DOSBox site for 0.73 for Ubuntu or anything related to it.  Well, unless the "Gentoo Linux" will work.

I tried the Synaptic Package Manager, but it says I have the latest version.

Does Ubuntu have a DOSBox 0.73?
