UPDATE

Changes made live

- Nepster's new Graphic Conversation Tool and NLEditor V0.9 have been uploaded to the NeoLemmix website. It has been put into a new link on the sidebar simply called "NLEditor (Test Version)".

Changes not made live yet

- Mostly front-end code cleanup and page layout. Some things I have accomplished so far:
     - Switching code to HTML5.
     - Remove inline styles and place them in external style sheet.
     - Remove all table tags (table layouts are no longer used as there are many style properties that accomplish the same thing while simplifying code).
     - Remove all <br> tags and &nbsp; and use margins and padding instead.
     - Enclose download lists in unordered list tags.
     - Wrote a small script that will mark whatever page you are on the side navigation.

In development

- Start some styling! Because functionality is the primary focus this may take more time than actual updates such as the one done today.

Here's one my grandmother read and told me a while back. It was originally in Spanish so I did my best to translate it into English without losing the joke.

A couple is having trouble having a baby. They went to the doctor to get tested and the results came out as the following: the wife got "N" and the husband got "OUFP". The husband shouted out, "Ha, you're the one with the problem! You got N for Nope" and I got OUFP for "Ohmygosh you're Undeniable in your Freaking Prime". A doctor overheard them and said, "You are incorrect sir. Your wife got N for Normal, and you got OUFP for Only Useful For Peeing".

Level Design / Re: Clear & precise level titles
« on: September 01, 2017, 08:57:00 PM »
Yes! Please! I hate it when people talk about a level (often from the original game but other games too, even custom ones) and say; "...Taxing 5..."
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT LEVEL YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! How could you remember the numbers easier than the title? Use the title please, I can't remember ranks and numbers.

I'm afraid I fell into that on my level pack thread. I apologize. I'll stop that in the future to prevent confusion and irritation.

Personally, I do believe that titles are just as important as the actual level, but I don't think titles should take priority over the actual level and I don't think someone should alter a level just for the sake of matching the title in some way. Titles are the last things I think about when I design a level, and I usually try to see what the spirit of the level is and come up with a title matching that. Sometimes it's literal and direct; others are less literal and less direct. They still hint at the solution using titles that may seem like they have nothing to do with the level, but they actually do. I will go as far as to say that even "There's Madness In The Method" falls into that category and was a vague hint to the solution. A hint where in order to solve this level you're going to have to try doing some things that seem crazy enough to work.

As far as making pop culture references: on one hand if someone doesn't get the reference then the title would just seem generic to that person, but if the person doesn't get the reference and it still connects with the level in some way then that's okay. I did name a level "Walking The Blue Mile" which is a reference to "walking the Green Mile", but even if you don't get the reference the level has lemmings that are walking in a crystal terrain (blue) and the level is a little long (mile), so it still works out even if it's kind of dumb and can still be much better. "Never Getting Back Together" is another reference, but the title perfectly summarizes the spirit of what the puzzle in that level is going to be without being literal and direct.

EDIT: Just remembered another good example. There's a GeoffLems level called "Panic At The Disco". It's a reference to a band, but at the same time even if you don't get the reference...

This isn’t my joke; I read it a long time ago. I paraphrased it below because I don’t remember it exactly. I’m sorry if you don’t understand it and yes I do have a strange sense of humor.

Two mathematicians, mathematician A and B, walk into a bar. Mathematician A says to B, "You know what’s wrong with today's society? No one knows Calculus anymore".
"I'm sure," says mathematician A, "that there are still plenty of people that know Calculus".

Mathematician B goes to the bathroom. Mathematician A makes sure he is gone and then calls over the bartender. "When my friend comes back," he says, "I’m going to ask you a question and I want your response to be x cubed over 3".

The bartender looks confused, but then nods. Mathematician B comes back and mathematician A says, "You know what, I’m going to prove you wrong". He looks at the bartender and says, "Excuse me ma’am, but what is the integral of x squared?"

The bartender looks at him with the same confused expression, but then finally says, "x cubed over 3".

Mathematician A looks surprised, nods, and then says, "I guess I was wrong, people do-"

But then he was cut off as the bartender suddenly stops, turns around, and shouts, "Wrong! The integral of x squared is x cubed over three PLUS the constant of integration!"

-Portal. I'm surprised I'm the firs to mention this one. It Starts simple and orthodox/cliche you might say then slowly leads you to realizing there's a big twist.

I completely forgot about that game, and yes I agree. It's a perfect example of silent storytelling: there is narration but you're the one that pieces together the truth through exploring the environment and paying attention to little details here and there.

Levels for v10 or older / Re: [NeoLemmix] Casualemmings

I was able to play the first three ranks (I wanted to try the last one but I'm starting to get an actual headache :XD: so I'll do it tomorrow if I have time).

First off, your levels are the perfect example of what I was talking about in my previous post: I may not get stuck on them for days, but WOW the puzzles are really good! My favorites so far are "Look at that Shimmy!", "Hither and Tither", "Lem isn't Fair", "A Touch Too Much", and "Operation: Super Rescue" as well (I hope I did that one intended). Great job!

I attached my replies below. Hopefully, I didn't break any levels ;P.

I have played through the first rank and a little bit of the second rank and I'm loving these levels . I love the puzzles in the first rank levels as they are not trivial, but not difficult. I will make another post with my replays when I'm finished so that you can have everything at once.

This forum is frequented by experts at Lemmings, who love to make really hard levels.
I am not one of them, and cannot conquer some of their devilish creations.
Perhaps you're in my boat? Or maybe you're just like Lemmings but are new to NeoLemmix?
In that case, this pack could be the one for you!

I am a firm believer that great levels and hard levels are not correlated. Are there very hard levels that are great? Yes. Are there easy or simple levels that are also great. Of course! It is true that a lot of people like to create challenge levels. I'm one of those people because I personally love playing and creating challenging levels, but that doesn't make me any better or worst than another creator. Everybody brings their own flavor to the table.

As for any levels I deemed "Impossible" so far
"Look at them shimmy"
The level is literally to hard for it position let alone solvable.
You 3 bashers for it as I tried everything on that level an not a single idea worked

"Look At That Shimmy" is not impossible, but it is the the hardest level in Calm. It's my favorite level so far by the way . I found the solution to be very clever. Trust me... it is 100% possible.

Three games that I think have truly amazing stories are Mother 3, Ghost Trick, and To the Moon.

I haven't played Mother 3, but I've seen others play it and even though I didn't understand the dialogue (because it's in Japanese and the game does not have an official release in the US to my knowledge) I still understood everything that was happening and... wow, what an emotional roller coaster.

Personally, a video game I played recently (last year) that I think had an amazing plot was Undertale. What the game doesn't have in overworld graphics, it makes up for in its gameplay and storytelling. I found it incredibly unique and original and I definitely recommend it even if you're not a fan of RPG games.

NeoLemmix Main / New NeoLemmix Website
« on: August 30, 2017, 02:53:55 PM »
Hello Lemmings Forums community.

In light of recent events, namida has given me access and the responsibility of maintaining the NeoLemmix website at http://www.neolemmix.com/.

I have decided to open a thread here mostly for communication purposes, such as letting everybody know when an update has occurred on the website or in worst case scenario if a delay will occur. It will help in keeping everybody in the loop. I have also been given permission to stylize the website a little bit. I don't plan on going super fancy with it, but I would like to post any progress on that so that people will see how it looks so far and post feedback about things you may not want and/or do want. This feedback is more than welcome anytime. Any feedback on actual updates is also welcome.

If you have any questions and/or comments don't hesitate to post in this thread.

:)

The Pit of 100 trials in Thousand Year Door can be totally cheesed with a Danger Mario setup.

I somewhat knew about that setup because I used to see it in speedruns of these games. Personally, this is something I would never do myself as it makes the game too easy (but that's just me personally and I do not object to it if that's something someone wants to do). True that the game itself isn't as challenging to me now as it was when I was little. I used to only power up my HP (until 100 :lem-shocked:, which can't be done in the first game because the max was 50 or 55) and never my FP or BP, and still have trouble with bosses like Magnus Von Grapple 2.0. When I got older I realized that there had to be a balance with what I powered up because with a better balance comes better strategies. Powering up FP instead of HP meant more FP for more powerful moves against tough enemies/bosses, or powering up BP instead of FP or HP meant better badges in battles. That made me a better player at the game and I feel more satisfaction with that than to become a one man army.

NeoLemmix Levels / Re: [NeoLemmix] Lemmings Migration

Final möbius stream comments. To be honest I actually wasn't excepting this pack to be so difficulty. I guess I don't know my own strength yet. :lem-shocked:

General Remarks (click to show/hide)

I forgot to mention something to Akseli in my reply to his post. I did do a lot of research around the forums to find out what people like and don't like. It helped me to avoid a lot of the pitfalls that beginners fall into sometimes when they start off, such as putting in a time limit on levels that don't really don't need them.

Thank you Akseli! I'll take a look at your solutions after looking at möbius's streams.

The whole pack felt astonishingly backroute-free already in its initial release, there were literally no level that felt broken or trivial.

There are a lot of backroutes. A lot of them no big deal but a lot of them that are. Of course, this is to be excepted and I don't think anyone releases a pack backroute-free the first time, even if its there 5th or 10th pack ever!

What's even funnier is that this kind of pack pops out of nowhere (at least I didn't know it was upcoming...) and surprises the entire community, all I can ponder now is that were these really the first levels you've ever designed and didn't you even have anyone to test them in advance?

Nobody believes me when I say this is my first pack. I PROMISE everybody that it is. However, as for the levels a lot of them are not the first ones I created. I have a lot in my recycle bin folder that are either bad or just not creative enough. I did try to play a lot of packs while making levels in order to see what was truly possible with a game like lemmings that I would never have figured out on my own just by playing the official games, so that's why I thank the community here. These past months have been crazy for me for personal reasons, but even on really busy days I would still manage some time in creating levels even if it was setting up a terrain but not having a solution yet.

Even though it felt a bit easy compared to levels around it, I must to admit that "The Abandoned Sanctuary" is probably my favourite level of the bunch as well, it was highly pleasant to play it.

This level is a perfect example of what I was talking about. This level started off with a trivial solution, but I liked it and I just kept on figuring out a better solution to it until finally arriving at the one you see today. It didn't happen overnight.

Great use of namida's Metal tileset, also! For real, there's definitely some challenge for players at all skill levels, I'd say Irritation goes already beyond Mayhem, and isn't quite like late Tricky, as the elders humbly say in the introduction. :)

I think I'm one of the only ones that likes the Machine tileset. I like the idea of almost everything being metal because it can lead to the solution seen in Migraine 3.

As for the elders, they grew up in another era where late Tricky was considered to be the hardest thing for young and inexperienced lemmings, but as the land became harsher the challenges soon grew. ;)

But yes the difficulty curve needs some work, but my primary concern was making sure the backroutes are fixed.
