In Development / [NeoLemmix] [In Development] Lemmings Reloaded -- Cancelled
« on: September 18, 2017, 11:51:21 PM »
Lemmings Reloaded has been cancelled. Levels will be submitted to Redux follow-up project.

Thank you everyone that played and provided feedback and replays.

Whenever I was at a lost for ideas I would make up my own (and sometimes harder) solutions to the classic levels we all know and love. This is something that I used to do when I was little, where I would play through some Original and Oh No! levels and come up with my own puzzles for them. Although I wasn't going to publish these originally, I was encouraged to publish them. So here it is!

Lemmings Reloaded is an upcoming pack of reimagined classic levels. However, they are not just the classics that are reimagined, this pack will also include reimagined solutions to other official levels seen in Genesis, PSP, PS3, and even Revolution.

Here is a small list of things that you can expect from this pack:
- Some levels will be untouched, some will have slight changes, and others will be reimagined without losing the core, original layout.
- PS3 and Revolution levels will be recreated from scratch.
- Some levels will retain their original names, but others will have their name changed to reflect the new solution the level has.
- Classic skills will once again be the only skills, but NeoLemmix objects will be used.
- A much more gentle difficulty curve, but the last rank will not hold anything back.

The problem I have with The Run Around is that a beginner can figure out the solution because they have experience with a level similar to The Run Around, which is Keep Your Hair On Mr. Lemming. Both require going over a one way wall, but in The Run Around it's more of a puzzle than just simply climbing over that one way wall. In It's Lemmingentry Watson the intended solution requires doing stuff that hasn't been done yet, and something that beginners might take some more time in figuring out.

I say let's keep The Run Around where it was in the original list.

543
On the other hand, I agree with bsmith that PoP YoR ToP!! is not such a strong rank opener. I would have suggested It's Lemmingentry Watson, but given Nessy's opinion on it, perhaps The Stack is a better choice?

Actually, I think It's Lemmingentry Watson would be a good rank opener. My previous comment was just saying that I personally didn't think The Run Around was harder than that level, but I would like to hear other forum member's opinion on The Run Around because I might be the only one with that opinion.

544
...which means the bridge has to be placed precisely so the lemming climbs the wall after finishing.

It's a little precise but it's actually not too bad. I had a little bit of time so I did a quick demo of bsmith's version.

If we replace both A Towering Problem and Five Alive, we'll have to choose one more replacement level, in addition to Have a nice day.

My vote is One Way Or Another. However, Temporary Peace would be a good level starter or early Rank 3 puzzle.

545
A Towering Problem can be made to enforce what I think is the intended solution by making a few changes: Save 26/30; RR=60; skillset=4,1,4,1,1,0,0,0.

With that skillset you can solve the level without the floater and blocker. Is that intentional?

I was neutral about Five Alive but I think that if we take advantage of the fact that you can use a bomber next to the first steel plate on the right to turn the lemmings around we can change the parameters to save 5/7, RR to 80, one climber, two bombers, and two builders it might be a decent Rank 2 puzzle. Just throwing that out there but I still think we can replace it with something else entirely ;).

Thank you for the replies Nepster. I'm going to look at them tomorrow or the next day.

A quick comment I can tell you right now is that if the trick in The Abandoned Sanctuary for the two climbers to stay at the top of the ledge feels hackish I can always tweak the terrain to fix it so it feels more natural. That's no problem at all. That was the original solution I had for that level, but I changed it in version 1 and then changed it back in version 2.

In Firework Chamber the timing for the left hatches was supposed to be precise but not that precise, but I guess it's worst than I thought. I'll see what I can do about that.

General Discussion / Re: Dreams
« on: September 17, 2017, 03:20:14 AM »
I had this phase where the only thing I would dream about was losing my teeth, and I would have to wake up and remind myself that it was just a dream and that I still have my teeth. Later on someone told me that if you dream about losing teeth it's because you were really stressed. I realized then that I had these dreams during a very stressful time in my life so it made perfect sense, and afterwards I stopped having those dreams. It seems like it was my body's way of manifesting those feelings.

Incidentally, you need to check the post-level texts for this pack; I shouldn't be seeing "Right on! You can't get any closer than that" after a fail.

Wow, that's embarrassing. I'll fix that and republish it in my first post as V2.1

Glad to hear everybody's feedback!

Irritation 2 has me completely stuck; I'd like to come back to it at some point, but I really don't have much time to play packs these days.

That level, In Your Wildest Dreams!, is actually a lot easier than the level that used to be Irritation 2: Never Getting Back Together, which is the most popular level so far. It was hard to place it because some people found it very easy and some very hard. It's now Irritation 4 and that's all I want to say so I don't give away spoilers.

Started playing this now. I've finished the first rank (they're getting hard already) and am working on the second rank (two down so far). A few things I've noticed...
Levels look very good and have clever solutions. Well done there. I've gotten stuck on a few, but nothing for too long yet, which is good. It would be really discouraging to get locked up on the first rank... I speak from experience on this one. :-[

I got stuck on a first rank level in Lemmings Plus Omega II. They told me it was hard and I tried it to see if it really was. Very good pack, but not for the weak. I'm still in rank 3 so I guess I'm doing good so far...

I know you don't like very hard levels so I'm just going to warn you that this pack gets very hard towards the end, but I know you can do it!

The custom toolbar looks pretty good. I can tell what skills are what at a glance, with one glaring issue... The number '5' and the number '6' look exactly the same; they both look like fives. That's a big problem. :lem-shocked: I didn't actually notice until Irritation 3, where I thought I had 5 builders only to discover that I actually have 6.

That actually isn't my toolbar. I got it from a forum member named altiereslima. I gave them credit in my first post and in the actual pack. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if I tweaked the numbers so they aren't confusing.

Great music choices! I'm hearing some Skyward Sword, some Oracle of Ages, some remixes of standard Lemmings themes, some Partners in Time, some Bowser's Inside Story... The songs don't loop very well, though... I like to use .ogg files and manually set up the loop with Audacity. Making it loop properly really does make it sound and feel nicer, especially when you're stuck on a tough level. Should you like, I'd be willing to teach you how. :)

The looping does suck... that's why I was hesitate the first time around to add custom music. Even now it still needs a lot of work. I'll go ahead and play around with Audacity, and if I need help I'm glad you offered to help. Thanks :).

I was referring to Ancient Temple of the Lemming actually.

Also, I am definitely getting the updated .nxp with the music!

Oh okay, and you should definitely try the updated .nxp, there are 7 new levels that I added to bring the pack up to 40 levels instead of the awkward 33 ;P.

Thank you Colorful Arty! I'm glad you enjoyed my levels.

I still have a lot to learn about making levels. The most obvious is making a better difficulty curve. It seems that my levels hit Mayhem in the second rank and it stays there. I also tend to think that a level is going to be a hard one, but it turns out that it's easy and vice versa. I guess you can only do so much, and just being honest about it and getting feedback like this is the only way to help with that. Another thing is play testing. I did play test my levels multiple times on multiple days for backroutes, but I need to start doing it a little bit more vigorous as some backroutes I would never have found while others were so obvious and silly that I should have caught them. Well, it's the only way to grow as a level maker :). Hopefully, these are things I can work on in future packs.

Version 2 is now available!

- 7 new levels have been added, bringing the pack to 40 levels (10 in each rank).
- Custom music.
- Backroute fixes.

I'm very happy with this pack and I'm very happy that everyone enjoyed it so much. I'm going to let it rest now regardless of what happens, with the only change being to update the pack to the new formats when the time comes.

In other news I have decided to publish something else I have been working on the side just for fun in the In Development topic. I wasn't going to publish it initially, but I was encouraged to go for it. It's coming soon...

Okay, I have finally played Fall and no life (Part Two).

It didn't take me as long to solve it as Lemmings' Ark, but I loved the solution . I have some new levels to add to my favorite official level list.

From a beginner's point of view this level would have no doubt been a major puzzle, especially considering the fact that not a lot of new players would have figured out what to do. Nothing in that level is immediately obvious. I say that Fall and no life (Part Two) would make a good Rank 5 level. Maybe not the last one, but I'm still unsure what I would put as a last level :-\.

But I'm getting ahead of myself we aren't even discussing Rank 3 yet ;P.

553
Haven't played Fall and no life (Part Two) yet, only part one. I'm going to try it out as soon as I can.

554
I also really like those achievement ideas. I didn't even know about this solution until about a year ago I think. It still amazes me.

Is that the solution where... (click to show/hide)

If so, then I didn't know about it until recently as well. Pretty cool solution.

This wouldn't achieve the talisman, but it's pretty cool how this level is the Tricky version of The Great Lemming Caper: many solutions, none of them easy to spot at first, and when you get more experience with the game you find even more crazy solutions.

555
By the way...

Yeah, Lemmings' Ark will most likely stay near the end, because several forum members consider it one of the hardest levels. If it were just me, I'd probably make it the rank 4 finisher, but in this case I'll probably end up deferring to consensus :P

What do you consider to be a good final level for this pack if Lemmings' Ark was a Rank 4 finisher?
