Re: Everyone's Picks So Far (click to show/hide)

Here is my own list. I tried my very best to NOT think about any answers to the descriptions while making them. Even though this is purely for fun I still wanted to be fair and... well... still make it interesting for myself :P

First Round (click to show/hide)

Personally, I don't think it's strictly "unfair", but I can completely understand why someone would think that it is.

This could probably be a bad idea but something I just thought of (something that Proxima even mentioned briefly). Maybe a good middle ground is to use some type of indicator to let people know what the hatch order is, similar to the arrow indicators that show which direction the lemmings will go in when they spawn from the hatch. For example, in the NLEditor when you post more than one hatch like let's say two, then you have the indicators of "1/2" and "2/2" above the hatches. I wonder how realistic it would be to have something like that or similar to that directly in the NeoLemmix engine, so that in a situations like the ABCB order even if (using the NLEditor example) the "2/4" and "4/4" indicators overlap at least the player would know that something is up.

I could be totally wrong but thought it was worth posting anyway.

EDIT: I just noticed that the original post on here brought this up and mentioned that "it'll likely just be a single jumble of overlaid icons", so I think this probably wouldn't even be viable even if it does tell the player something is going on.

Forum Games / The Video Game Music Challenge [Official Game Thread]
« on: July 20, 2020, 01:18:06 PM »
Welcome to the Video Game Music Challenge!

A fun daily challenge inspired by a similar challenge/list Lana T. posted on the Lemmings Discord.

Please read before participating:

1) You will be given three short descriptions of a certain type of video game music, and it's up to you to write down the title of one specific video game track from one specific video game that matches each description and essentially creating a list of three different video game tracks. Links to your music track choices such as one on YouTube for others to listen to is not required but highly recommended!

2) Please post your list into a spoiler tag on this thread so that people that have already posted their own list can look but people that haven't posted their list yet won't be accidentally influenced.

3) You will have roughly until the deadline stated during that round to not only get your list of titles posted but in the meantime everyone is encouraged to discuss everyone's choices and list.

4) After that round is done another set of descriptions will be posted. This challenge will roughly end when general interest starts to die down, in the hopes that sometime in the future someone else will take over and revive the challenge!

To discuss any concerns or questions please post them in this dedicated thread

First round

1) Favorite music that's used in a main title screen
2) Music that you like from a game you haven't played yet
3) Music from a game that was first released the year you were born

Second Round

1) Favorite music that plays during the credits shown at the end of a game
2) Music you like from a game that you have played and disliked
3) Favorite final boss battle music

Third Round

1) Music that seems to be underrated in your opinion (basically music you like that may not be liked as much by others)
2) Music you associate with frustration
3) Music that makes you feel nostalgic

Fourth Round (By Turrican)

1) Music with an uplifting beat and sound
2) Music that is more atmospheric sounding
3) Music with a very dark and gloomy sound to it

Fifth Round (By Colorful Arty)

1) Music from a video game that people wouldn't be able to tell is from a video game just by listening to it
2) A really creepy/scary track from a game (Note: unlike dark and gloomy the intention of this one is to actually make you feel fearful/scared)
3) A track from a video game you wish you could forget so you could hear it again for the first time

Sixth Round (By 607) Until August 31 at 18:00 UTC

1) Music with unusual sounds
2) Favorite music that plays in a cave or underground area
3) Music that is technologically impressive (for the system it's on)

10-8: Time is of the essence!

Lemmings: 50
Save: 48
Time: 3:20
Skills: 2 Bombers, 2 Blockers, 12 Builders, 1 Basher, 1 Digger

Good: A fairly fun, if straightforward, time cruncher level where builder placement is key, but so is when to release the rest of the crowd to hit that sweet spot where you aren't too early and the crowd goes pass the builder and dies and not too late as to cause the time limit to hit zero.

Bad: This level could have easily switched places with "How do we get up there!" as both are time crunchers and "How do we get up there!" is WAY, WAY, WAY more difficult (at least in my opinion and you can read my rant on it here). It's also the only level with a green balloon, which is a shame.

My thought is less about people directly copying each other, and more about influence. For example - someone else posts a track from FF7. Now I have FF7 on my mind and might be more likely to consider FF7 tracks myself.

Given that it is more a just-for-fun thing without winners / etc though, perhaps simply using spoiler tags is enough to avert this effect, and simply use the "ask nicely" approach with regards to not viewing other people's answers before posting one's own.

Oooooh I see what you mean now... okay yeah that's true, and I think the spoiler tag is a good idea and a nice common ground.

Soooooo..... what do we have to do?

I updated the original post now to include the spoiler tag rule. Everything should (hopefully) be final now :)

I'd suggest bring back one idea from the original: Keep the "submit via PM" system. This reduces the chance of people's decisions influencing each other (and thus may lead to more variety in the results).

Honestly I think I want to avoid the "submit via PM" system for now. If this was more of a legit competition instead of a silly, for fun kind of thing then submitting responses via PM will definitely have to be done. Of course, this can change if others want that system, or even if a few rounds of the game in action show that a system like this is needed.

I'm not sure why you already put them all in, though. :P

Me neither :P I actually don't know what I'm doing :8():

But in all seriousness it seems that people prefer my new proposal so I think I'll leave this thread as the "suggestion and discussion of that suggestion" thread and start up a brand new thread with the true forum game this Monday, July 20th. I will go ahead and update the original post anyway so that people can still read both the original and new ideas and provide last minute feedback.

Forum Games / Re: The 30-Day Video Game Music Challenge

Glad to see people are interested :)

One very important thing to note is that after reading some feedback I think this challenge should be tweaked a little bit. Instead of having one song description each day and then having all the dead air during the 30-day period... my new proposal is to have a certain number of descriptions (most likely 3 to 5) posted on here and then allow everyone who wants to participate to post their favorite video game track that matches each description (so they will have a list of 3 to 5, basically the final number of descriptions we decide on) and then allow a few days for everyone to discuss them before moving on to another set of descriptions.

I'm wondering if this would strike a better balance and essentially be more engaging than the "one a day" idea?

Name: Run All Day
Theme: Desert
Game Style: Super Mario 3D World

Course ID: 27X-BHG-M5G

Description: It's a level I made ages ago :P but the general idea is that you can either take it causally or speedrun it!

Welcome to the Video Game Music Challenge Discussion! This thread is ONLY for the discussion of the general rules and regulations for how this game could work.

New Modified Ideas For The Challenge

1) Starting on July 20, 2020 you will be given three short descriptions of a certain type of video game music, and it's up to you to write down the title of one specific video game track from one specific video game that matches each description and essentially creating a list of three different video game tracks. Links to your music track choices such as one on YouTube for others to listen to is not required but highly recommended! Finally, please post your list into a spoiler tag so that people that have already posted their own list can look but people that haven't posted their list yet won't be accidentally influenced.

2) You will have roughly three days to not only get your list of titles posted but in the meantime everyone is encouraged to discuss everyone's choices and list.

3) After that three day cycle another set of descriptions will be posted. This challenge will roughly end when general interest starts to die down, in the hopes that sometime in the future someone else will take over and revive the challenge!

10-1: Topsy Turvy

Lemmings: 100
Save: 98
Time: 10:00
Skills: 2 Climbers, 1 Bomber, 2 Blockers, 20 Builders, 7 Diggers

Good: A very fun and tough puzzle involving the bottom hatch of lemmings having to go towards the top of the level to save the top hatch of lemmings. However, instead of having the lemmings fight against gravity to climb up the level they have to take advantage of the gravity inverters in order to go downwards which is actually going upwards.

Bad: Because of the large quantity of builders you can kind of backroute the level by having the top hatch of lemmings take advantage of all those builders to pretty much save themselves. Also it's a shame that the "monster" that acts as a hazard in this level doesn't appear in any other level :(

Hi! Glad to hear your military duty is ending as well and good luck to you when you go back to the university. Also I hope you can accomplish those things on your to-do list especially making your own level pack because I have seen some of the previews you have shown of it and it looks absolutely amazing!
