NeoLemmix Levels / Kieran's Abandoned Zone (v3)
« on: May 06, 2023, 12:47:26 PM »
Sometime in the 4 year gap when Quest From Kieran was abandoned before I came back and finished it, I had apparently started another pack with more of a focus on Neolemmix features like new skills and styles, talismans, and taller levels rather than the purely vanilla affair of QFK. I found these levels earlier today, and so have transferred them over to Neolemmix v12.12.5 and released them now as a tiny pack, because I feel certain that I will never come back and turn these into a full pack.

The levels all use Lemmings 2 styles and music from Jazz Jackrabbit. There are 9 of these levels, that I've ordered into what I think is the proper difficulty order. The levels are much easier than QFK, at least at first, with spare skills and excess save requirements. Perhaps this was a rebellion against my own usual very hard and specific level design, I feel like the first 5 levels are a fine difficulty for most people here, nothing too challenging, with the latter half being the usual Kieran Millar fare.

As a bonus, there is a 10th level at the end of the rank that will look familiar to QFK players, yes, it's another one of those levels, this is one I had replaced with an alternative before anyone else got to see it. Looking back at it, I think it got replaced for either being too precise (sorry in advance) or maybe not distinct enough in its solution from some of the other levels that made it, but well, for whatever reason I replaced it you get to see it now for the first time, another hard QFK level. It also has a unique music track by the same author as the music used in QFK, yes, another distinct variation of this same music piece, he made a lot of these.

I've decided to provide the official solution replays in advance, as I have abandoned these levels and am not interested in making backroute fixes.

Here is some of my own commentary on each level looking back after all this time. Not spoilery but if you want to avoid spoilers at all costs maybe don't read this anyway

NeoLemmix Levels / Quest From Kieran [Difficulty: Medium - Very Hard]
« on: March 04, 2023, 08:18:57 PM »
Welcome to Quest From Kieran, the prequel to Quest From Kieran 2!

This is a 60 level pack for Neolemmix v12.12.5 or later. Like the other entries to the QFK series, it tries to maintain the traditional Lemmings style, so only the original 8 skills, no levels taller than the original height, only levels styles from the original game and Oh No, that sort of thing, but the levels are significantly more puzzle focused than the original games.

The music is songs made by classic British demoscene musician 4mat, specifically tracks from a Jet Set Willy remake. You should be fine with regards to e.g. copyright on Youtube playthroughs. I came up with my own names for the tracks, there were no official names.

Difficulty is probably Medium to Very Hard, but I'm quite bad at properly gauging the difficulty of my levels. I hope you enjoy!

Special thanks to Armani and Akseli for comprehensive testing, and Wafflem, Ste Woz Ere, ericdekovits and WillLem for additional testing and comments.

The Ranks

Fun
I thought it made no sense why only the original game gets to have a rank that states the levels are fun. I want my levels to be fun too! So I named this rank Fun. Hah! Take that!

Investing in Infrastructure

Also Fun
What, you thought only the first few levels in a level pack are allowed to be fun? Well not this time! These levels are a bit harder, but they're still fun!

Frozen Arches

Hard But Still Fun
Levels don't have to be easy to be fun. Even my hard levels are fun!

Pillars of the Community

Not Fun
Well I guess they can't all be winners.

The High Ground

How to Install

Extract the contents of the zip file into Neolemmix's levels folder. Then inside Neolemmix, press F2 to select the level pack you wish to play. If you want the music, extract the files into Neolemmix's music folder.

Levels for other engines / [Lemmings 2] Holiday Tribe 2020
« on: November 29, 2020, 06:09:09 PM »
After a tough 2020, the Lemmings have treated themselves to travelling to a far away tropical island to try and cheer themselves up. And hopefully, their adventures will cheer you up too.

Holiday Tribe 2020 is a 10 level Lemmings 2 pack, replacing all 10 levels of the Beach Tribe. While levels are more difficult than the official levels, that's not a terribly hard barrier to overcome, and the level pack as a whole is much easier than my other Lemmings 2 pack, Quest From Kieran 2.

As always with Lemmings 2, you are expected to save everyone where possible. In this pack you can save everybody, with the aim being to get the full 60 lemmings to the end. Some levels are extremely easy if you are OK with letting at least one lemming die. Saving them all is the real puzzle.

After not touching Lemmings for a long time, I felt in the mood for a quick one-off. Lemmings 2 Tribes are nice because they are only 10 levels long, and the level editing is pretty fast due to the restrictive grid massively limiting your options. This entire tribe was built in the span of a single weekend.

How to Install
Back up your current Lemmings 2 LEVELS folder, then extract the contents of the zip into there, overwriting the existing files.

Reviews / Level Review - Lemmings Plus 3D
« on: November 10, 2019, 11:03:23 PM »
Release thread: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=4368.0
Solution playlist (so you can remind yourself of the levels): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVWvcY0oGEFyAqIY6HWJ6NunGfl4PiUjM

I am currently playing through this pack ( https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjmQA_pi2AYTZdoUOD4HKNuyveubQBAeX ) and had more I wanted to say about each level. So here's a thread of me reviewing each level as I play them.

Fun 01 - Called Back To Duty
This is a fantastic opening level to the pack. Given many players may not have played Lemmings 3D for a long time, it really helps to have a level with wide open space to get used to the camera controls. The level is simple with a fun centerpiece (the rope slide) yet has enough flexibilty to really play around in the level and come up with alternate solutions if you're experienced and want something more. Compare to the official first level, which is trial-and-error based on un-guessable physics, the first official level of Lemmings 3D is atrocious really. I wish it was this level instead.

Fun 02 - Security Walls
In the original Lemmings 3D I seem to remember a level that was a maze but you had to shortcut it by bashing through a wall. This feels like the simplest, most obvious implementation of that concept. I feel like there is the possibility that this level is trying to put me in the right mindset for a trickier revisiting of this, but I might be wrong.

Fun 03 - Lemmings On A Train
I really really love the visual effect going on here that makes it look like the train is moving. Very clever. For a level that is mostly about looking like a thing, it does a very good job of providing an interesting and engaging path through the level. Definitely a top tier level, taking into account the difficulty level it's aiming for.

Fun 04 - Performance Tower
A notable uptick in difficulty in terms of parsing the 3D landscape. While the level is still pretty easy in hindsight, the lemmings at the top felt like they were in a somewhat precarious position. I spent a small while thinking about this one while I got back into the swing of thinking in terms of 3D. I am sure there are a number of easier solutions, but I dug down the central column safe in the knowledge that the spiral staircase would save my lemmings from splatting. I really enjoyed this one.

Fun 05 - The Grand Gallery
The tight space in this level is really bad for the camera. The level is very straightforward, but I spent the entire time fighting the camera. The ceiling needs to be higher up so there is more room for the camera to move. It took me a long time to understand what the (admittedly simple) layout of the level even was. And the position of camera 2 is completely incomprehensible when you first switch to it, you don't even understand what you are looking at.

Fun 06 - Indoor Maze
By comparison this level has a really high ceiling and as such there are no camera issues. It's a perfectly fine level, although it didn't really need to be indoors at all and this would have made the camera even better. I'm glad the walls are only as high as they need to be and no more, so clicking on the lemmings isn't made harder. The level itself is OK. Feels slightly like filler, the maze isn't big or complicated enough to make much of a puzzle out of not using too many turners. Is that the splitter texture used for the exit?

Fun 07 - Star Wars
A fantastic level. Really good introduction to the trap lightning floor. In my solution, in order to make sure too many lemmings didn't die I blocked the crowd between the two builds. It's interesting how the addition of turners naturally causes the classic problem of levels devolving into a single worker lemming to not happen and how you have to play around that. I think the final corridor could have done with one of the two traps being removed just because it's very specific, but in L3D's grid-based layouts this sort of precision is actually not a big deal, so I guess it's fine. At first I thought this level would have teleporters between ships and would be a simple turner puzzle, so was pleasantly surprised when that wasn't the case.

Fun 08 - Where Shall They Rest?
Unfortunately I'm sorry to say that this level is terrible. While hidden exit puzzles were an acquired taste, they are even worse and so much more tedious in 3D. Not even any graphical hints as to where they might be or anything. No, nothing, just pure trial and error strip-mining of the level until you find the one block that can't be destroyed somewhere in the middle of a solid mass, and there are multiple solid masses. Come on namida, you can do better than this. This felt like a troll level.

For over 25 years, Lemmings Scholars have been flummoxed by the greatest and most challenging question ever posed in the Lemmings universe: What does the title of Outdoor 9, "22934" actually mean?

I finally worked it out. Answer in the below spoiler tag.

Levels for other engines / [Lemmings 2] Lemmings ... In Space!
« on: February 20, 2019, 10:50:19 PM »
Lemmings ... In Space!

After the highly experimental Fun With Blockers I wanted to make a more traditional set of puzzles instead of the "interaction exploration" that Fun With Blockers focuses on. However I had no ideas for any sort of theming or mechanical restrictions, so I did what all good designers do when they have no ideas, and gave this level pack a theme where it takes place in space!

This pack contains 10 levels for the Space Tribe. To install, you need to download the attached zip file and then either:
  • Backup your Lemmings 2 LEVELS folder and overwrite the files with the contents of the zip, which will permanently replace the levels with these ones.
  • Copy your Lemmings 2 game into a new folder and then overwrite the contents of the LEVELS folder of the copy with the contents of the zip file, and point DosBox to the new copy of the game.

This is a save everyone pack, with one exception, as always this one level has the number of lemmings you can lose stated in the level title. Hint: it's the one that has the Exploder skill in it.

Because it's impossible to properly talk about a Lemmings 2 pack without warnings about execution requirements, I've come up with the following difficulty categories that I'm going to use to describe all my L2 packs going forward, based on my own testing:

Puzzle Difficulty - Medium to High. Never reaches the heights of Quest From Kieran 2 but levels always try to do something interesting. Good understanding of general Lemmings 1 gameplay will help here more than all my other Lemmings 2 packs.
Game Mechanic Knowledge - Only one obscure interaction: Sand poured on a flat surface does not turn the lemming if they are a Climber. Otherwise nothing beyond basic understanding of skill fundamentals like how Glue Pourers and Rock Climbers work. This pack is very low on "skill interaction tricks".
Precision Execution - Skill assignments are only precise where it is impossible to avoid, of which there are some. Otherwise every care has been taken to reduce precision where possible.
Fan Execution - Only one instance: very easy ballooning.
Timing Execution - Use of the pause key for rapid-fire skill assignment might be needed in 3 of the levels.
Crowd Execution - Big messy crowds of lemmings can accumulate in a number of levels. In one excess skills to free the crowd are provided because it doesn't break the puzzle, in others mashing the pause key waiting for a good gap in the crowd has never failed me during my testing.
Other Lemmings 2 Annoyances - The Magno Booter can sometimes detach itself in places where the player alters the terrain, and unfortunately there is nothing I can do about it. Sorry!

Level 5: Constructing a Starport

I'm super happy with how this pack has turned out and I hope you enjoy it too.

Levels for other engines / [Lemmings 2] Fun With Blockers
« on: February 02, 2019, 04:51:39 PM »
Fun With Blockers

Over a year ago I ranked the Lemmings 2 skills and put the old classic Blocker dead last because in Lemmings 2 it is super buggy and if used outside of the Classic Tribe, as it causes the game to crash. However, it works totally fine inside the Classic Tribe, where all skills except for the Attractor work with no issues. Given that levels using the Classic Tribe that don't solely use the original skills are few and far between, I decided to play around with the Blocker's interactions with other skills, and made a short level pack demonstrating these.

This pack contains 10 levels for the Classic Tribe.

As Lemmings can die in this Tribe, I state the number of lemmings you can lose in the title of each level.

These levels are more demonstrative than real levels, as such they are for the most part signficiantly easier than my usual fare, although you may have to figure out the interactions in most cases, but it shouldn't be hard. Level 9 has a lot of fanning of Jetpacks, which is always a pain and, well, sorry about that.

It is important to understand how the Blocker works. The blocker's left hand causes lemmings that touch it to face left, and its right hand causes lemmings that touch it to face right. Note that changing what direction the lemming faces usually causes it to move in that direction, but not in all cases! For all intents and purposes, the blockers hands are not solid, they just force other lemmings to face a certain direction. For example, a lemming flung by an explosion becomes a "tumbler", and the tumbler moves through the air with no care for what direction the lemming is facing. So you can't, for example, blast a lemming with an explosion and hope to bounce it off of a blocker, the blocker would cause the tumbler to face the other way, but the tumbler would just pass straight through the blocker.

It's worth mentioning that the Blocker in Lemmings 2 is notorious for being incredibly easy to perform the crawling glitch with it. I have decided that if a crawling backroute is found in these levels, I simply don't care, and am unlikely to bother fixing it.

Level 8: Loading Cargo

I hope you enjoy this short pack. Fun Fact: This pack was made entirely within 24 hours, including writing this post.

Levels for other engines / [Lemmings 3] Quest From Kieran 3
« on: December 24, 2018, 04:05:36 PM »
Welcome to my level pack, Quest From Kieran 3! It's a pack for Lemmings 3 aka The All New World of Lemmings aka The Lemmings Chronicles.

Lemmings 3 is the black sheep of the original trilogy, and for good reason. The gameplay is very different and the responsiveness of the controls are terrible. But hiding underneath the bad level design of the original game is a puzzle engine with a lot of potential. I hope to unlock that potential in this pack.

In this pack the aim is to save everybody and restore the tribe back to the 60 lemmings they started as in Lemmings 2. Some levels have very easy solutions if you choose to ignore the stragglers. Don't do this! The real puzzle is to save everyone! Remember: 2nd place is just 1st place loser!

This pack is designed for Adults mode, don't play it in Kids mode!

Each tribe starts off easy but gets a lot harder in a hurry. The top-end difficulty of this pack is extremely hard.

It's probably been a very long time since you last played Lemmings 3, or maybe you've never played it at all. There's a number of things you should know:
  • The candle on the main menu screen is where you load and save the game. This game does not autosave.
  • If you right-click on a lemming, you will highlight it, which makes it easy to select in a crowd. If you right-click anywhere else, you will cycle through highlighting all lemmings that have tools. Highlighting is vital to master for this pack.
  • Jumpers are ridiculously unresponsive. Click furiously on the lemming so that it works.
  • If a blocker is on flat ground, another lemming can jump over him. Use this to separate out a single lemming without having to juggle everyone.
  • Each tribe starts with 20 lemmings, and some lemmings exist on the level already as "stragglers", trapped in ridiculous locations. If you save these stragglers, you add them to your total count.
  • As long as the number of lemmings you have is 10 or more, only 10 lemmings will drop form the trapdoor at the start of the level, with the rest held in reserve. If a lemming dies, one of these reserve lemmings will drop from the trapdoor. As the aim of this pack is to save everyone, this doesn't really matter.
  • You can cancel blockers with walkers. If they are on flat ground, they will carry on walking in the direction they were originally facing. If the ground is not flat, the blocker will balance over the edge, and will always return to a walker facing away from the drop.
  • You can cancel shimmiers with the walker skill.
  • You do not have to activate floaters and swimmers, they deploy automatically.
  • Climbers can be activated very far in advance, as long as the lemming does not drop or do something else the lemming will store the command until he reaches the next wall.
  • If you try to build straight down or dig straight up, the lemming will turn around. Often this is easier than trying to assign a walker, but you can only do it if there is at least one valid digging or building direction.
  • If you are digging towards a cliff edge and will run out of spades when you reach the end, it might be safer to assign a blocker rather than a walker.
  • Sometimes, for whatever reason, a lemming digging diagonally up or down will turn around when he can't dig any more. Usually you will try to turn him around thinking he will walk off the cliff, causing him to turn around again back towards the cliff. Very annoying. Be aware of this, maybe assign a blocker so you can more easily respond.
  • The usual Lemmings advice of always having your finger over the P key on your keyboard applies as always. When paused the game will unpause on any click or button press, so you want to be pausing constantly.

An enormous thank you to Carl Reinke aka Mindless, for open sourcing lem3edit, so I could update and improve it, without which this level pack might not have happened.

Meet the Tribes!

Classic

Tool focus: Bricks, Spades

Stuck in their ways for so long, the Classic tribe have been forced to adapt to the new world, but old habits die hard. These guys maintain their expertise at building and digging.

Egyptian

Tool focus: Suckers, Shimmiers

You can't spend years building large tombs and pyramids and not become adapt at scaling large terrain and crossing large gaps.

Shadow

Tool focus: Umbrellas, Swimmers, Bombs, Hadokens

The masters of traveling where you least expect them, the Shadow tribe love nothing more than sneaking behind dangerous areas unnoticed and then dropping loud explosives. Hey, you can't be quiet all the time.

How to use level replays
Lemmings 3 will automatically record your moves, and let you play them back by pressing R. This will play back your previous attempt and you can cancel it and intervene at any time by doing something other than pause or fast-forward. Problem: in Adults mode, solving the level in this way refuses to let you progress, which is really dumb. Good news, attached to this post you will find a save file, which you can use to unlock all levels, therefore being blocked from making progress doesn't matter! When you solve the level, press the Replay Save button on the map screen and the level will get a red R symbol on it, you can use this to keep track of which levels you've 100%ed. Replays can be saved even if you solved them using the replay feature.

To watch a replay you saved, right-click on the level.

How to Install
Either:
1) Backup the contents of the LEVELS folder of your Lemmings 3 data directory (where you extracted the contents of the CD) and then extract the contents of the zip file into there, overwriting the existing files.
2) Duplicate your Lemmings 3 data directory, extract the contents of the zip file into the LEVELS folder, overwriting the existing levels, then point your DosBox instance to mount this new data directory as the D drive.

Help & Guides / How to play Lemmings 3 in DOSBox
« on: February 23, 2018, 08:36:53 PM »
1. Grab one of the CD versions from here, doesn't matter which, the only thing that changes is the name of the game on the title screen:
http://www.camanis.net/lemmings/lemmings3.php

2. Extract the zip file somewhere. E.g. C:/games/lem3cd . Note that there is a LEM3CD folder inside the zip, so might prefer to extract it to C:/games in this example.

3. Create another folder where the game's installation will go, e.g. C:/games/l3install

4. Get DosBox here, presumably you want Windows but all sorts of operating systems are supported: http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

5. Install DosBox.

6. Run DosBox and type the following (substituting the file paths for the two folders you used):
mount c c:/games/l3install
mount d c:/games/lem3cd
d:
install

7. You will now be at the install menu. Use the keyboard to navigate. Do the following for each option:
  • Set Installation Directory - Change it to C:/
  • Select Sound Card - Choose Sound Blaster, then the rest of the options choose the defaults
  • Select Super VGA Mode - On
  • Select Sound Effects - On
  • Select Music - On
  • Select Difficulty - Adults
  • Change CD Drive Letter - D
Then press Esc and Choose Save and Quit

8. Back at the DosBox screen, type l3 to make sure it all works. The opening video might be messed up but when you reach the main menu it should be fine. It might be insanely loud though. Watch out headphone users! We'll fix that soon.

9. If it’s all working, you can close DosBox by typing “exit” at the DOS prompt, by pressing Alt+F9, or by freeing your mouse from being locked inside the window by Alt-Tabbing out and then just closing the window.

10. In your Start menu, you should go to DosBox and look for the Options, specifically “DosBox 0.74 Options”. This is a text file where you set the various options.

11. In the options file you’re looking for 3 options:
  • Render options, scaler=normal2x. Can change this to normal3x if the game is a bit too small on your screen for your liking.
  • Cpu options, cycles. Not sure what the default is here, but I’d recommend 10000, which keeps the loading times low without dedicating too much unnecessary processing power to running a 25-year old game.
  • Autoexec options. This is right at the very bottom of the file, and you’ll want to add in the following 5 lines (substituting the paths for your own directories):

    mixer master 20:20
    mount c c:/games/l3install
    mount d c:/games/lem3cd
    c:
    l3
(This autoexec assumes you only want to play Lemmings 3, never anything else.)
The mixer master line decreases the volume to 20% and makes it a much more sensible level.

12. Run Dosbox and Lemmings 3 should boot straight up from now on.

NOTE If you want to play custom levels, it might be easier to duplicate the CD folder, then replace the levels in there and change the D drive location you are mounting to the duplicated folder, leaving the install path the same so you don't have to reinstall everything.

Tech & Research / Lemmings 3 glitches
« on: January 06, 2018, 03:55:49 PM »
I've been playing around with Lem3Edit and discovered a number of bugs in Lemmings 3, so thought I'd document them, one post at a time.

Bug: Can dig beyond all level borders.
Severity: Harmless.

All areas beyond the level border can be dug with the shovel. As lemmings going outside the level borders kills them, this is completely useless and sometimes will result in the lemming dying anyway, so has no consequence for the player. Note that trying to dig off of the right side of the level causes the lemming to get stuck in an endless loop of trying and failing to dig. When digging off the bottom of the screen the lemming cannot be reselected once partway off the screen and therefore this cannot be exploited to reach areas by going below the level.

Levels for other engines / [Lemmings 2] Quest From Kieran 2
« on: January 03, 2018, 07:38:00 PM »
Welcome to my Lemmings 2 : The Tribes level pack, Quest From Kieran 2! This pack replaces all 120 levels in Lemmings 2.

The gimmick of this pack is that each of the tribes has its own set of 8 thematically-appropriate skills, and their levels use only those skills. So each tribe not only looks different, but plays differently too!

Note that this is a "save everyone" pack. Every level has 100% save requirement for gold, except for the Classic Tribe, where the number you are allowed to lose and still get gold is stated in the title for each of their levels.

This pack does not rely on glitches. While every attempt was made to try and prevent glitches from being able to break levels, some may still remain. In particular, the "crawling" glitch is not used anywhere in this pack, so if you solve a level using it, I won't be impressed. Note that using the crawling glitch via the Blocker skill in the Classic tribe was too hard to prevent so it is still possible to break some levels using it.

Thank Yous
This pack would have been significantly worse and were it not for the additional help from a number of people. In alphabetical order:
  • geoo - For the amazing L2Suite development tools that made making this pack significantly more enjoyable, and for his extremely comprehensive testing.
  • GuyPerfect - For the excellent lgl2 level editor that made this pack possible
  • Nepster - Extremely comprehensive testing
  • SimonNaar - Extremely comprehensive testing

Meet the Tribes!

Beach
Like, we're totally gonna get you that talisman piece from the clams that stole it dude, but, like, there's this totally sick bunch of waves coming and I'm, like, totally there man! Surf's up dude!

Level 7: Lifeguard to the Rescue

Cavelems
10,000 years ago lemmingkind first roamed the world and survived using primitive tools. Today those lemmings are... clearly dead, I mean come on man, it was 10,000 years ago! However their memory lives on with a bunch of ironic hipsters who forgo modern technology because it's way too mainstream. But the joke's on them, now they have to deliver the talisman and have to travel by foot. Suckers!

Level 8: Dino Might

Circus
Roll Up! Roll Up! Come and see the greatest show on Lemming Island! Watch as the incredible SuperLem takes on the trapeze, without a safety net... or a trapeze! Come see our amazing laser display! And watch with amazement as sixty of our finest clowns try to deliver the talisman piece, with hilarious consequences!

Level 4: Teeny-Weeny Houdini

Classic
Nobody understands these guys. Everyone else has moved on and developed new tricks, as well as a better social understanding that deaths are often unnecessary, yet this tribe continues to do the same old stuff with the same old tricks over and over again. Legend has it that they've conquered thousands and thousands of landscapes and yet they keep on going, and somehow despite the massive losses there are just so many of them that they never go extinct. Lets hope there's still some of them left by the time they deliver their talisman piece.

Level 5: Overflow

Egyptian
Egyptian lore says that one of the gods buried the talisman piece alongside them, but there are so many gods, I guess we'll just have to check every tomb! The Egyptians love their pots, that's why this tribe bought along a whole bunch of them as their only construction skills! Historians are keen to point out that the magic carpet is actually Arabian, and not Egyptian, but the Arabian tribe don't care, they were made extinct a thousand years ago after one of them got drunk and triggered the armageddon.

Level 3: The Climber's Curse

Highland
After correctly predicting the prophecy of the Darkness befalling Lem Island, the Highland Tribe felt a bit upset that they weren't getting quite the level of thanks they'd hoped for. So Jimmy McLemming held an independence referendum for the Highland Tribe to become their own sovereign group. Unfortunately it quickly occurred to them that they were doomed without the other talisman pieces and so the referendum failed. Dejected and defeated, Jimmy McLemming spent the rest of his days drowning his sorrows with cheap bottles of scotch whiskey, so nothing different to usual really.

Level 7: Scaling Lem Nevis

Medieval
The Medieval Tribe prides itself as defender of the realm. Using the swordsmanship, bowmanship and chivalry passed down from generation to generation, Lemming island is safe from all intruders! So who better to deliver the King's talisman piece safely to the ark than 60 of his finest knights? (Actually don't tell them, but the orbital laser satellites launched years ago by the Space Tribe are significantly more effective at defending the realm).

Level 5: Ye Olde Cavern

Outdoor
At last, a tribe that takes place outdoors, if you ignore Beach, Highland, Medieval, Polar, Shadow and Space! And probably Sports too? Is that inside a stadium or in some nightmarish green hellscape dimension? Anyway, don't let the Outdoor Tribe fool you, they love to talk about how they have conquered the great outdoors and live off the land but in reality they've never ventured further than their back garden.

Level 7: Rocky's Horror Show

Polar
Why would anybody live in the bitterly cold, frigid Northern mountain range of Lemming Island? Easy, it's because there is enormous amounts of oil. And in the process of extracting it all, this tribe has become the experts of excavation and building tall structures. Now you'd think that this meant that when it came time to deliver their talisman piece, they'd be over in a flash using some motorised technology, but no, they keep trying to stick to tradition and deliver it by ski-courier, which would be fine, if the terrible skier physics meant they didn't constantly get in accidents and need to be rescued...

Level 5: Living Life on the Edge

Shadow
The masters of stealth, nobody knows where the Shadow Tribe are at any given moment. Which is quite surprising really, given the bright yellow balloons and loud explosions that follow them wherever they go. Maybe it's because everyone else is asleep when they travel during the dead of night. I guess you'll just have to hope that they deliver the talisman piece in time.

Level 4: Flee the Nest

Space
Bad news. In order to fund their space adventures the Space tribe sold off their talisman piece to the weasels years ago. It looks like there's only one solution: buy it back blast off on a risky adventure to the nearest wormhole and pass through it to an alternate dimension where they still own the talisman piece. What could possibly go wrong?

Level 3: Blast Chamber

Sports
The Sports tribe actually already have the talisman piece to hand, but they've offered it up as first prize to a tournament, so now they have to go win it! Sure, you could argue that the current need for the talisman is more important and could just swap the prize out for something else, but seriously, that is not how sports work! Disclaimer: I have no idea how sports work.

Level 5: Uphill Obstacle Course

How to Install
Back up your current Lemmings 2 LEVELS folder, then extract the contents of the zip into there, overwriting the existing files.

How to run Lemmings 2 in DOSBox

A Quick Lemmings 2 Refresher
  • You have to manually save the game from the main menu. There's no autosave!
  • You want to run l2-fix.exe, not l2.exe
  • Useful keyboard shrotcuts:
    • ESC: Quick Restart
    • F1 - F8: Skills
    • P: Pause
    • Spacebar: Fan (Note, you have to unpause by pressing Space if you want the fan ready when unpausing)
    • Enter: Fast Forward

Bonus Downloads!
But wait... you'll find more attached to this post:
  • QFK2_LostTribe: Because 120 levels just wasn't enough, here's another 10 levels for the Egyptian Tribe that do not follow the standard skill theming as the rest of the pack. This was my opportunity to use some level ideas that simply could not work in the rest of the pack due to the strict skill limits I imposed. There is one level in this pack that does not require you to save everyone, which you'll know because like the Classic Tribe it states how many you can lose in the level title. As this overwrites the Egyptian Tribe, you may wish to create a duplicate of your Lemmings 2 game so you can run this and the main pack simultaneously without having to constantly mess around with the files.
  • QFK2_Neoclassic: I have converted the Classic Tribe to Neolemmix in case you want to try the levels without suffering from Lemmings 2's bad UI. It uses the new formats, and to play you extract the folder inside the zip into the levels subfolder of Neolemmix.
  • QFK2_Neoclassic_music: Extract this into your Neolemmix music folder and NeoClassic will play the Classic Tribe's music in each level. Without this, it will play random music tracks from those that come with Neolemmix.

----

Welcome to Quest From Kieran, the prequel to Quest From Kieran 2!

This is a 40 56 60 level pack for Neolemmix v12.12.5 or later. It contains levels in the traditional Lemmings style, so only the original 8 skills, no levels taller than the original height, only levels styles from the original game and Oh No, that sort of thing. There are probably a billion backroutes. Difficulty is probably overall mid-to-high with a small number of easy levels at the start and getting very brutal towards the end, but I have no idea how to really gauge this.

The music is songs made by classic British demoscene musician 4mat, specifically tracks from a Jet Set Willy remake. You should be fine with regards to e.g. copyright on Youtube playthroughs. I came up with my own names for the tracks, there were no official names.

The Ranks
