Live Event Scheduling / Re: minigolf

Doesn't sound too fun to me, to be honest. The best thing about mini golf to me is the feel of the impact between the putter and the ball, which you won't get when playing a video game. :P

Thanks for the permission, geoo. :)

My reactions:
Huh, I wasn't expecting Engine to do so well! I'm also surprised that anyone named some other than Jaws for question 7. :P What makes Daffodil pickable? Yes hahaha, I am so glad Dog did well! As I said in my pm: "To be honest, I think 'bone' and 'food bowl' might be more likely winners, but this is so good of an obvious answer that I do not want to risk not having picked it when it does win. :P" And for question 10: "It's hard not to go with 607, but I think that I am not enough of an icon here to have it be the first number that comes to people's minds. On my main forum I would be, I imagine." It's interesting that 1 beat 0. Wasn't expecting that on a forum with so many mathematically minded people. ;)
Lol, I love how I got the lowest score on every single one of the inverse scoring questions. xD

One is allowed to consult the web, right? Edit: I mean looking for for example a list of American presidents, not actually asking people on the web what their answer would be, or looking for another Family Feud game with the same question.

Makes sense you get 0 here rather than -1 for skipping, but it didn't come to my mind at all, and I was surprised so many players opted for it even though it wasn't explicitly mentioned anywhere.
It actually was!

I wrote a script for that back in the day, see here and here (I'm not sure there's a difference between the two, but I linked both just in case.)
Thanks, that's great! Can I adopt that for other forums if I'd like to, at some point?

1. Oh, nice! I'm glad that We All Fall Down was a good pick.
2. I am surprised to see that nobody else picked Pineapple! It certainly does seem to be the most talked about pizza topping. :P Did anyone else consider it? I'm sorry for Ichotolot, fallen to the subclass rule...
3. Excuse me? I think I don't understand this question. Ah, you were looking for brands?... I thought the available options were a superclass of dark, milk, white and caramel sea salt... so I wrote milk, as that seems to be the most commonly preferred one. I wonder if Icho did the same, then?
4. Well, I guess I haven't been following the community enough. :P To be honest, I did see a lot about Lemmings Redux on the Discord server recently.
5. Heh, glad to see my strategy of picking the most recently active forum game other than Family Feud paid off. The first forum game I thought of was Counting with Pictures, but it seemed dumb to pick that one, as it hasn't been played here ever, as far as I'm aware.
6. Heh, I don't know the Simpsons well, and I actually imagined Homer Simpson while typing Bart Simpson. I'm lucky that some people did go for him (unless they made the same mistake :P).
7. This one seemed obvious to me, as Apple is such a huge brand. No other smartphone brand compares. Apple might even be reasonably called the Nokia of smartphones... except that Nokias weren't overexpensive. ;P
8. Woah, I am surprised here! I wonder why you went for mouse. I was going to say that, with how many people use laptops nowadays, removable mice might be used more often than removable keyboards, but on the other hand, some laptop users don't use a mouse at all... and considering that the keyboard is the most basic peripheral for pc's, I am quite surprised that nobody else went for it! Monitor also wasn't used at all... I guess people take keyboard and monitor for granted?... :P
9. Hey, I'm glad to see bread worked out. Wasn't sure it would!
10. Cockatiel?? What's that??

11. Nobody went for Earth.
12. Unlike here, where people did go for the obvious ones. :P
13. Huh, wasn't expecting 'Tame' to do well!
14. Donald Trump and Barrack Obama aren't in. I assumed that if I looked through a list of former presidents, I would be able to find one that was way more probable to not be picked by anyone else. I didn't want to use external tools, though. How do others feel about this?
15. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

16. Huh, everyone who went for it, didn't lose points to it!
17. Hey, my estimate was pretty good!

Cool to see so many people share their thoughts. :D
I'm glad to see an explanation for the parrot thing. :P I'm also glad to see that some other people did consider keyboard. ;)
Thinking of it now, pizza makes sense for 9 because of question 2. I guess it wasn't enough, though.

I'm not a fan of the inverse scoring question type myself, although it was funny to see the results. The recursive reverse psychology is fun a few times, but it seems to me that in the end it comes down to luck. I could use a couple less.
Hoping for another round soon!
I do have on my mental list of projects to work on writing something that lets me automatically write Family Feud results. I used to host Family Feud on another forum, but writing the results was a lot of work, and it seems like it could be automated fairly easily.

Non-Lemmings Gaming / Re: Speedrunning
« on: February 27, 2021, 12:44:31 PM »
I have half a feeling that I'd like to submit the Repton series to speedrun.com so that I can motivate myself to play them again, but without the factor of competing with others, I'm worried that it would feel like drudgery and I'd lose interest quite quickly.
Chances are that if you start a leaderboard at SRC, there will be other players submitting runs at some point.

One of the first games I tried to speedrun was the Any% categories of Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2, but I never came back to them. In the first SMB game I think I got something around a 5:35 with a successful 4-2 wrong warp which made it more of a highlight for me. However, given how short this run is having to play the first level hundreds of times after a mistake was just annoying :P I might try doing a Warpless run in the future though. The SMB2 speedrun is one that I actually did stream once, but once again I just got tired of playing the same levels again and again and wanted to just take a break but I ended up never coming back to it after that stream.
Are you talking about the American or the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2?

Personally, I've been interested in speedrunning for a while, not sure since when. I do know I've watched GamesDoneQuick since SGDQ2014, so it's been at least six years. I used to think I wouldn't like it myself, though, because I like to play different games, and actually make progress in them. In speedrunning, you're playing the same game for a very long time, and once you're above a certain level it is hard to notice any improvement; in fact, over a half hour session there might not be any kind of progress at all. I did actually route three games: Dizzy - Prince of the Yolkfolk for 16-bit systems, Ice Age for GBA, and Barbie Ocean Discovery for GBC. I enjoyed the routing aspect, and finding tricks and strategies, but I did not enjoy having to memorise lots of things and having to get consistent at tricks.
I've also noticed this when doing time trials in Mario Kart Super Circuit, a GBA game which I've played a lot: when I start playing a track that I haven't played since I was at the level I'm at now, I really enjoy finding out what shortcuts to use, where to drift, et cetera. I'm also improving my time at least once every 5 minutes. However, after 30-90 minutes, depending on the track (this might be divided across several sessions, that does not matter for my experience), I will be at a level where to improve my time I either need so much consistency that I'd have to grind for it, or I'd have to include shortcuts that are so difficult that I keep having to reset because of failing them. Then I quit, and I don't pick up the same track again.

This is a heads up that, as the pace of new entries has greatly slowed now, I will be wrapping this up and calculating the results in around 24 hours (give or take).
I hope I will be in time with my entry! (will make it in about 30 minutes) I will check the forum more often now that Family Feud is on again.

General Discussion / Re: [POLL] Should we have a poll?
« on: January 31, 2021, 06:36:40 PM »
I actually used to include polls with almost all of the threads I created on my main forum. When I couldn't think of a poll related to the subject, I just made up an unrelated one. At some point I even started compiling the results from all the different polls in a spreadsheet. :P I stopped including polls at some point because I deemed them distracting from the intention I was creating the thread with.

Non-Lemmings Gaming / Re: Moments in video games that scared you
« on: December 15, 2020, 12:34:53 PM »
Oh! I just remembered.
See, I'm not into these types of games that usually offer scary moments. My favourite video game genre is the 2D platformer. But a few years ago, I actually got startled by one!
As with all of these moments, it's not nearly as significant when watching back a video as opposed to playing it yourself, and obviously it's not nearly as significant when you're expecting something to happen... but maybe you can imagine that I got scared here!

(if you stay around they take up the entire screen and you die; this will probably happen the first time you play the level, which increases the shock factor!)

Ah yes, I've looked into Forestia before! (I wrote 'Forestidia' by accident, oops :D) I've never played it, though.
I had one scary game as a kid. It was called "Red Cat Spookkasteel", and was only released in the Netherlands, as far as I know. I didn't dare to go past the second level, but I wanted to know how the story continued; I went into the game's files and listened to all the cutscenes. :D I was a tech-savvy kid. ;)
I'm not sure if I've got scared by any other video games! I'll think about it.

Non-Lemmings Gaming / Re: What video game(s) are you playing at the moment?
« on: December 12, 2020, 08:38:54 PM »
That Spelunky game seems very popular, hoping you are enjoying that one Nessy. :)

I'm playing the (Ticket to ride) board game, it's a good little board game where you have to connect routes up to complete your destination tickets. One other game that is quite good is Carcassonne another board game where you get points for creating cities and other things.

These are games you can get on steam for a good price.
Ticket to Ride is great!
We have the Märklin edition, featuring Germany. What I love about that version is that every single card has a different locomotive/carriage on it, instead of one per colour.

I have been playing Super Mario Bros. 35 since it came out on October 1st. It is free on Switch, if you have Switch Online, and puts you against 34 other players in a last man standing type of game. You play through levels from the original Super Mario Bros. (with updated physics, but much closer to the original physics than other recent games such as Super Mario Maker), and if you kill an enemy, someone else gets it on their screen.
I really enjoy the game, but it is rather tiresome to play, because there can be hundreds of enemies flying around, and every single one is represented on screen. Sometimes when I have had a particularly busy game and stop playing I can still see enemies flying around for a few minutes. :P
It is very fun though! I managed to get 10 consecutive wins within the first month, which was a great accomplishment, and since then I have been trying to get a win without using any mushrooms or fire flowers. Haven't managed to do that yet! The game is really a lot different when you die in a single hit. ;)

Good to hear from you, LJLPM. :) I had forgotten about this project but did really enjoy reading the progress updates when you were actively working on it. I'm sorry that most of the screenshots disappeared!
