Contests / Lemmings Forums Level Contest #26 - Results
« on: November 27, 2022, 03:11:10 PM »
Ladies and gentleman, we've got our final results! :)

The winning levels are:

NieSch's "Blocker from Hell"

and

NieSch's "Wee Walk in Winter Wonderland"

Congratulations to NieSch for winning the contest!

Congratulations to Armani therefore for reaching the 2nd place with:

Armani's "There's a Sniper in the Forest"

Choice for the prize for the first place is either:

- a month's advertising on the forum's news ticker
- picking the next contest's rules
- US $5.00 (PayPal would be the easiest here I think).

In each voting round, you're allowed to vote for up to a certain number of levels. Vote for the levels that you want to stay in the contest, not for levels you want eliminated. You may vote for fewer levels than the permitted maximum. You may vote for your own levels.

It's not allowed to discuss the levels publicly on the forums during the voting phase, even if the level is not in the current round, or even between rounds.

You may discuss any level in private messages. You may discuss publicly off-site, e.g., you may post Youtube videos of your playthroughs, or discuss in IRC chat. Eliminated levels may be discussed anywhere, even publicly on the forums.

There'll be voteoffs within each design rule, to get down to one/two/three remaining levels per design rule.

If after the rule voteoff the number of remaining levels is >9, I will create 2 mixed groups semi-randomly out of the remaining levels to bring down the number even further. For all of this no tiebreakers are planned. After this, all qualifying levels will go into a final mixed voteoff.

Generally, the number of levels that qualify for the next round will be the same as each user's permitted vote maximum. I've decided to keep the percentages of "surviving" levels of the rule-voteoffs somewhat similar to give every rule a fair chance. Example: A rule with a 66% survival-rate and one with a 33% survival-rate for the mixed rounds doesn't seem that fair to me.

There's only a prize for the 1st place winner - of course, getting close to that still means you made a great level.

So... let the voting begin! Each round will be open for voting for 3 days, except the final which will be 4 days.

All levels are still avialable in the discussion topic: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=6058.0

I found the following:

When you have an 8 pixel steel ceiling it should be impossible to step through it.

Now in the attached test level you have a ground floor 4 pixel under said steel ceiling.

The stacker is placed in a location that is timed perfectly so that a lemming that steps up (I think from the right) becomes weirdly stuck inside the ceiling way higher as he should be and as a result stepping up through it.

I don't know exactly what goes wrong here though, but it should be a bug 100%. ???

Contests / Results of previous level design contests
« on: September 17, 2022, 03:44:29 PM »
I've decided to go through all previous level design contests and LOTY contests and list the winners and 2nd placements.

3rd placements were often not documented or if they were are often a result of ties between two winners. LOTY often did document those though.

In a few cases persons also occupied also multiple placements - like levels from person A took 2nd and 3rd place.

I plan to update the list after future contests. Enjoy! :)

Contests / Level Design Contest #26 - Playing Phase (Update Topic)
« on: September 08, 2022, 02:48:06 PM »
Note: This topic is ONLY for posting updates to your levels, or making late submissions. All other posts will be deleted. If you want to discuss the levels, post replays, etc, please do so in the Discussion Topic.

Please follow these rules for updates:
1. When posting a new updated version of a level, remove any old updated versions of that level --> Have all your recent updates stored in 1 post! I will delete such old posts eventually if the author doesn't; so don't store any important information in them.
2. Make a new post for a new update; do not edit your most recent post. You may, however, post updates to multiple entries (if you have more than one) in the same post.
3. Use the same filename as found in the ZIP of the entered levels, with "V2" "V3" etc added at the end. No matter how minor an update is, give it a new number.
4. Do not post in this topic, unless it's to post an update to your levels. Use the discussion topic instead for anything else.

Please use the same naming format as in the zip file:  User1_Levelname_R3V5.lvl ---> Level "Levelname" by User1   for Rule 3   Version 5 of the level

For late submissions also, please use the same kind of filename as is used in the main levels download - ie: your username, and "R1" "R2" or "R3" to mark which rule the level is for. Please be sure to check the original contest announcement topic for the rules; as the notes in the discussion topic are simply meant as reminders, not full explanations of the rules.

Please use the right naming format when posting updates! That would lead to less confusions and less work for everyone.

Contests / Level Design Contest #26
« on: July 17, 2022, 02:48:17 PM »
Welcome to another contest of the Lemmingsforums! This time the three rules have been picked by Armani for winning contest #25.

A few words to new participants and forum members: If you haven't entered before, I strongly encourage you to try - even if you don't win, it's fun to participate; and we have had cases where first-time entrants have won before! There are three choices of rules given, you may enter one level for EACH one of the rules.
You may either use new format NeoLemmix, or Lix.
If you have more than one entry, they may (but do not have to) be for the same engine. Please make sure you tested your level for basic solvability before submitting and be sure to also submit any custom tileset you are using, so others have no problem playing your level. ;)

Pre contest testing: You can choose 1-2 persons who do a bit of pre-testing for you, so that the biggest backroutes and screw-ups of your levels can be detected before the playing phase. I cannot control this so it's only a guideline, but still I would prefer not everyone knows every level before the playing phase starts. ;)

Here are the rules on how the submission deadlines work:
- Initial submission phase deadline will extend such that it's 72 hours from the time of the last submission, up to the 5th submission (inclusive). After this it no longer changes no matter what.
- Update phase deadline will not extend over the initial dead line!
- Even if you missed the cutoff date for the initial submission phase, late entries are accepted until the update phase ends. There is no penalty for a late entry, beyond that people are less likely to spend as much time on the level before voting begins.

And here is the new ruleset:

Rule 1: Iron Juggernaut

Make a level without any destructible terrain.

 - This means the level shoud be entirely steel.
 - You can use destructible terrain pieces as erasers but the only visible pieces can be steel.
 - You are not limited in which or how many objects you can place.

Rule 2: Jumping is so much fun!

Make a level that uses infinitely many jumpers.

 - You can provide infinite number of certain skill by setting the number of that skill to 100 in the editor.
 - The amount of each skill besides the jumper may be any number including infinite.

Rule 3: Lemmings 2 The Tribes

Make an L2-like level. ( =Make a level with only L2 tilesets and L2 skills)

 - You can only use terrain pieces and objects from L2 tilesets
(L2 tilesets: Beach, Cave, Circus, Classic, Egypt, Highland, Medieval, Outdoor, Polar, Shadow, Space, Sports)
 - Tileset mixing is okay as long as all the tilesets you use are in the list above.
 - You must NOT use objects that don't appear in L2 such as OWAs, pick-up skill, updraft, zombie etc.
 - The only exception is the eraser. You can use non-L2 terrain pieces as long as they are used as erasers.

 - You can only provide skills that are shared beween Neolemmix and Lemmings 2 The Tribes:
Classic 8 skills + Fencer, Jumper, Shimmier, Slider, Swimmer, Platformer, Stacker, Glider(Hang Glider in L2), Laserer(Laser Blaster in L2)

 - Everything else such as time limit, save requirement, background is up to you!

Submission phase ends September 7th 2022 at 00:00 UTC.

Ruleset in detail again: http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2246.0

Send me a personal message with your level/s and if needed tileset/s to participate. It would also be nice to also tell me the rule which each level satisfies.

Please use the following naming format:  User1_Levelname_R3V1.lvl ---> Level "Levelname" by User1   for Rule 3   Version 1 of the level

Prize selection:
- US $5.00
- One month's advertising on the forums news ticker
- Pick next contest's rules

Entries so far: 14

- IchoTolot (3)
- Armani (3)
- NieSch (3)
- SQron188 (1)
- Crane (1)
- kaywhyn (3)

We've finally reached the final phase and got 7 levels as candidates for LOTY 2021!

We will vote them down from 7 to 3 to 2 to 1, ensured by tiebreakers if nessesary.

If you want to see the full list of nominated levels in non-randomized order, check the nominations list topic.
If you want to play these levels without having to dig up all the various level packs, check the playing phase topic which has a pack available for download that contains all the nominated levels.

Please remember that discussing the nominated levels is not allowed in the LOTY2021 topics now that voting has begun. This does not apply to levels that have already been eliminated at the time. Discussing them elsewhere in the site is okay, as long as it's not in the context of LOTY2021.

In Development / Lemmings Isolation Development Topic
« on: July 03, 2022, 12:28:52 PM »
I hereby officially announce that I am going to start working on a new pack called Lemmings Isolation.

How will it look like?

Before I wanted to open this topic I had to make up my mind about exactly what I want to do here and more specifically the stucture of the pack. I did not want to make just another huge pack with even bigger ranks and clubber everything together. Therefore I wanted to come up with a plan on how to make things a bit different and I found the solution by getting inspiration from the past and more specifically: PimoLems and NepsterLems.

I plan to make smaller ranks with a theme in addition to some classical ranks (but also smaller). I don't want to limit myself too much though and I doubt I make it as strict as "In this rank are only levels with a 1:00 timer", but rather "Here I made levels with a close timer".

What exactly those themed ranks gonna be I still need to work out and also I will leave it classified for now.

What about all these contest level I made in the past time between United and this?

Those will go in an extra rank. I don't want a big part of the pack to be just "Oh, I know this level, it was in a contest!". They still gonna be included, but as an extra rank - also this makes it way easier for possible LOTY nomination in the future. ;P

Why announce now and not now earlier?

The intro pack is finally done (at least until the new objects arrive) and I think I soon can divert some more attention into making some levels again. Do I already have levels apart from all the recent contest entries? No, but let's say this topic shall also serve as a little motivation for me to slowly fire up the engine again. ;)

Why Lemmings Isolation?

This came from trying to name it with some connection to Reunion and United: Isolation --> Reunion --> United.

What will the difficulty be like?

I want to make some more easy/medium difficulty stuff in here, but also still want to have a punch in the end, maybe even in something like a "Hardcore" rank. So a good portion of the pack should be relatively accesible. Although if I have an idea and it turns out harder than expected I still won't shy away from it - but maybe consider something like a "Fun" version or an easier level which takes inspiration from it.

When it will be done?

An IchoTolot pack is always ready at the right time. It is neither early or late. Or in short: It's done when it's done and an update will come when I feel like it is appropriate. ;)

16 levels have made it to this second phase. Here we will try and reduce this number to 6 or slightly above that due to possible ties.

The levels have been divided into 2 groups of 8 levels semi-randomly.

Each group will be voted on one at a time, with the goal being that 3 levels from each group advancing to Phase 3. This number can increase in the case of ties. I plan no tiebreakers for this!

Welcome to the Level of the Year 2021 voteoff!

So, most of you will know how this works, but just in case - and so that specifics are covered - here's a quick rundown.

The 40 nominated levels have been divided into 5 groups of 8 levels, semi-randomly. To be specific, the division was done in such a way that a single author wouldn't have too many levels in a single group.

Each group will be voted on one at a time, with only 3 levels from each group advancing to Phase 2. We try to bring the number down to 3 in one single Round. I plan no tiebreakers for this and if we have a minor tie then all tied levels advance. In case of a lot of major ties (5or6+ levels), I might run a tiebreaker later.

If we then have a bit more than 15 levels in phase 2, these will be split up into 3-4 groups for phase 2. There, I also plan to just let 2-3 of each group survive with no tiebreakers if possible. Only in the final phase I plan to enforce placements with tiebreakers.

Contests / Level Design Contest #25 - Voting Phase (Current: Finals)
« on: June 06, 2022, 06:05:41 PM »

Contests / Level of the Year 2021: Playing Phase
« on: April 13, 2022, 09:04:05 PM »
Alright, so nominations are now closed. Before we open the voting, we first offer a period to play the levels again, to familiarize yourself with those you haven't yet played and review those you have.

The list of nominated levels can be found in the nominations topic, I see no need to duplicate it here. It also contains information on where to find these levels outside of my compilation here.

Download links:

- Levelpack of all nominated levels.

Every author with 3 or more levels in this category gets an own rank in the pack. At the end there is a mixed rank for the leftover levels. Extract the zip file inside the main NL folder.

- Music tacks

The custom music tacks of the nominated levels. Extract the zip file inside the main NL folder.

- Replay collection

Some gathered replays from a few of the nominated levels. As this was optional, only a part of the pack is covered here.

Playing phase will end: May 31th 2022

General level feedback and solution replays can be posted here in the topic if you want! Have fun playing! :)

If there are any errors I've made in the collection, don't hesitate to inform me here! As a reminder: This pack is nothing more than an optional service I provide as an attempt to make all nominated levels more easily accessible.
