In each voting round, you're allowed to vote for up to a certain number of levels. Vote for the levels that you want to stay in the contest, not for levels you want eliminated. You may vote for fewer levels than the permitted maximum. You may vote for your own levels.

It's not allowed to discuss the levels publicly on the forums during the voting phase, even if the level is not in the current round, or even between rounds.

You may discuss any level in private messages. You may discuss publicly off-site, e.g., you may post Youtube videos of your playthroughs, or discuss in IRC chat. Eliminated levels may be discussed anywhere, even publicly on the forums.

There'll be voteoffs within each design rule, to get down to one/two/three remaining levels per design rule. After this, all qualifying levels will go into a mixed voteoff.

Generally, the number of levels that qualify for the next round will be the same as each user's permitted vote maximum. I've decided to keep the percentages of "surviving" levels of the rule-voteoffs somewhat similar to give every rule a fair chance. Example: A rule with a 66% survival-rate and one with a 33% survival-rate for the mixed rounds doesn't seem that fair to me.

There's only a prize for the 1st place winner - of course, getting close to that still means you made a great level.

So... let the voting begin! Each round will be open for voting for 3 days, except the final which will be 4 days.

All levels are still avialable in the discussion topic: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=4204.0

Contests / Level Design Contest #17 - Playing Phase (Update Topic)
« on: May 08, 2019, 06:07:48 PM »
Note: This topic is ONLY for posting updates to your levels, or making late submissions. All other posts will be deleted. If you want to discuss the levels, post replays, etc, please do so in the Discussion Topic.

Please follow these rules for updates:

1. When posting a new updated version of a level, remove any old updated versions of that level --> Have all your recent updates stored in 1 post! I will delete such old posts eventually if the author doesn't; so don't store any important information in them.
2. Make a new post for a new update; do not edit your most recent post. You may, however, post updates to multiple entries (if you have more than one) in the same post.
3. Use the same filename as found in the ZIP of the entered levels, with "V2" "V3" etc added at the end. No matter how minor an update is, give it a new number.
4. Do not post in this topic, unless it's to post an update to your levels. Use the discussion topic instead for anything else.

Please use the same naming format as in the zip file:  User1_Levelname_R3V5.lvl ---> Level "Levelname" by User1   for Rule 3   Version 5 of the level

For late submissions also, please use the same kind of filename as is used in the main levels download - ie: your username, and "R1" "R2" or "R3" to mark which rule the level is for. Remember that the maximum-of-two-levels-per-user rule still applies, even for late submissions. Please be sure to check the original contest announcement topic for the rules; as the notes in the discussion topic are simply meant as reminders, not full explanations of the rules.

Please use the right naming format when posting updates! That would be less confusions and less work for everyone. ;)

We've got 5 levels in this final phase!

We will vote down from 5 to 3 to 2 to 1, ensured by tiebreakers if nessesary.

If you want to see the full list of nominated levels in non-randomized order, check the nominations list topic
If you want to play these levels without having to dig up all the various level packs, check the playing phase topic which has an NXP available for download that contains all the nominated levels.

Please remember that discussing the nominated levels is not allowed in the LOTY2018 topics now that voting has begun. This does not apply to levels that have already been eliminated at the time. Discussing them elsewhere in the site is okay, as long as it's not in the context of LOTY2018.

16 levels have made it to this second phase. Here we will try and reduce this number to 4 or slightly above that due to possible ties. This way we will have a small enough group for the final phase.

The levels have been divided into 4 groups of 4 levels semi-randomly.

Each group will be voted on one at a time, with the goal being that only 1 level from each group advancing to Phase 3. This number can increase in the case of ties. I plan no tiebreakers for this!

For the final phase I will enforce the top 3 via tiebreakers though.

If you want to see the full list of nominated levels in non-randomized order, check the nominations list topic
If you want to play these levels without having to dig up all the various level packs, check the playing phase topic which has an NXP available for download that contains all the nominated levels.

Contests / Level Design Contest #17
« on: March 31, 2019, 02:43:56 PM »
Welcome to another contest of the Lemmingsforums! This time the three rules have been picked by Colorful Arty for winning contest #15.

A few words to new participants and forum members: If you haven't entered before, I strongly encourage you to try - even if you don't win, it's fun to participate; and we have had cases where first-time entrants have won before!; there are three choices of rules given, you may enter one level each for up to two of the rules.
You may either use new format NeoLemmix, or Lix.
If you have two entries, they may (but do not have to) be for the same engine. Please make sure you tested your level for basic solvability before submitting and be sure to also submit any custom tileset you are using, so others have no problem playing your level. ;)

Pre contest testing: You can choose 1 person who does a bit of pre-testing for you, so that the biggest backroutes and screw-ups of your levels can be detected before the playing phase. I cannot control this so it's only a guideline, but still I would prefer not everyone knows every level before the playing phase starts. ;)

Here are the rules on how the submission deadlines work:
- Initial submission phase deadline will extend such that it's 72 hours from the time of the last submission, up to the 5th submission (inclusive). After this it no longer changes no matter what.
- Update phase deadline will not extend over the initial dead line!
- Even if you missed the cutoff date for the initial submission phase, late entries are accepted until the update phase ends. There is no penalty for a late entry, beyond that people are less likely to spend as much time on the level before voting begins.

And here is the new ruleset:

Rule 1

Make a level only using tilesets that you haven't used before in a level you have publicly published. VGASPECs are not allowed!
In the case that you have published levels that collectively use every tileset (likely only to happen in Lix), then make a level only using tileset pieces that you either haven't used before or use infrequently (You may use whatever objects you like in this case).
We likely won't be able to strictly enforce this rule, so it will be a bit of an honors system, but if you make a level that clearly doesn't use anything unfamiliar to you, it will be rejected. This is a rule to encourage you to try one or more of the many different tilesets the forumers have created.

Rule 2

Make a level that gives you:

-    Exactly one type of permanent skill (Climbers, Floaters, Gliders, Swimmers, Disarmers or Runners)
-    Exactly one type of continuous constructive skill (Builders, Platformers or Stackers)
-    Exactly one type of continuous destructive skill (Bashers/Shovelers, Miners, Diggers/Stampers, Fencers)
-    Exactly one type of sacrificial skill (Bombers/Exploders/Imploders, Stoners, Cubers)
-    Exactly one type of instant skill (Blockers, Walkers, Cloners, Jumpers, Batters)

This means five different skills will be assigned, but you can assign as many of a given skill as you want. Example level gives you: 5 climbers, 2 bashers, 1 builder, 3 bombers, and 2 cloners.
Each type of skill needs to play some role towards the intended solution. For example, putting disarmers on a level with no traps would not be allowed!

Rule 3

Select a piece of terrain from any tileset and make a level using only that type of terrain piece. VGASPECs are not allowed!
You can insert as many duplicates of that piece as you want, and you can use other terrain pieces as erasers, but the only visible pieces can be that one type you selected. For example, you could make a level using nothing but the wishing well from the Dirt tileset and use other terrain pieces such as pillars from the Pillar tileset to erase parts of the wishing wells, but you cannot make the pillars visible on your level.
You are not limited in which or how many objects you can place in a level!

Submission phase ends May 7th 2019 at 00:00 UTC. This should give everyone enough time to think about a level. :) Deadline for the playing / update phase will be announced when it begins.

Ruleset in detail again: http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2246.0

Send me a personal message with your level/s and if needed tileset/s to participate. It would also be nice to also tell me the rule which each level satisfies.

Level Design / April 2019 Level Collaboration
« on: March 28, 2019, 03:38:18 PM »
The final result of this collaboration has been attached to this post! :)

I was thinking after a long time we could attempt to do another level collaboration. :)

How does this work?

1.) You just say here in the topic or in a pm to me that you want to participate and I'll write you on the list.

2.) I'll roughly randomize the list of people to get a sequence. If you feel not good about covering certain positions this is totally negotiable (just tell me in your pm/post). Somebody might feel more confortable crafting landscapes in the early iterations than forming solutions later on for example. I try to put people in their confort zone as this should result in a better end result. :)

3.) The first person on the list starts making the level. For the first person it's usually just the raw landscape or just a part of the level.

4.) The first person posts his/her result in the topic and the second person contiunes making the level based on the result of the first person. You can change the things a person before you added, but it's not nice to simply completely discard all changes from another person without at least asking for permission.

5.) The goes on until the last person on the list has done their part. Usually the last few persons form the intended solution, add some additional quirks to it or decorate the level a bit more. The first persons usually form the general landscape and develop first crucial parts and tricks the solution revolves on.

6.) At last everyone tries to solve and therefore backroute fix the level, or find other problems that might need fixing.

Important: You result is always level + replay. Maybe in the first few iterations a replay is not needed, but if a solutions starts to form it is nessesary.

Another idea I had is that we could have 2 different solutions with different skillsets in the end, like an easy and a hard version.

As this is a collaboration of multiple people:

Every person is allowed to use the resulted level in their pack/s and I will also submit it to the NL community pack level pile!

Everyone had part in it so everyone should be able to use it and be proud of it! :8():

So what tileset are we going to use?

I was thinking the following tilesets could use some more attention:

- plom_bastemp
- sqron_turrican2wall
- zanzindorf_agony

So maybe use one of them ???   I am open for other proposals here! In the end I think I will hold a poll on which one we should focus on. :)

Tell me if you want to participate! Also comment on which tileset, or combination of tilesets, we should use (may it be from my little list or another proposal). :)

Participants:

- IchoTolot
- SQron188
- möbius

Welcome to the Level of the Year 2018 voteoff!

So, most of you will know how this works, but just in case - and so that specifics are covered - here's a quick rundown.

The nominated levels have been divided into 5 groups of 5 or in one case 6 levels, semi-randomly. To be specific, the division was done in such a way that a single author wouldn't have too many levels in a single group.

Each group will be voted on one at a time, with only 2 levels from each group advancing to Phase 2. We try to bring the number down to 2 in 1 Round. I plan no tiebreakers for this and if we have a minor tie then all tied levels advance. In case of major ties (4+ levels), I might run a tiebreaker.

If we then have ~10 levels in phase 2, these will be split up into 2 groups. I also plan to just let 2 of each group survive with no tiebreakers if possible. So that ~4 levels will be in the final phase 3 and only there I will enforce placements with tiebreakers.

Contests / Lemmings Forums Level Contest #16 - Results
« on: March 24, 2019, 09:41:31 AM »
Ladies and gentleman, we've got our final results! :)

Congratulations to Nessy for winning the 16th Lemmings Forums Level Contest with "Butterfly Cult"!

Also congratulations to Crane for reaching the 2nd place with "Run!"! :)

Choice for the prize for the first place is either :

- a month's advertising on the forum's news ticker
- picking the second-next contest's rules as Nepster will determine the rules for the next one
- US $5.00 (PayPal would be the easiest here I think).

Contests / Polls for possible changes to the contests
« on: March 20, 2019, 02:32:01 PM »
As stated in the recent Contest Topic I want to do 2 polls regarding the rules of the contests:

Poll 1.) Change the voting round duration from 3 days normally and 4 days for finals to 2 days normally and 3 days for finals.

Poll 2.) Base the distribution of levels not on contest rules anymore and instead just pseudo-randomly distribute all levels evenly onto a reasonable number of groups.

I will leave each poll open for 3 days and make a decision based on the results. :)

In Development / [NeoLemmix] The new NeoLemmix Community Pack Topic
« on: March 08, 2019, 10:50:21 AM »
Get the latest Alpha build here: Current NeoLemmix Community Pack Collection

Big news!

I've sorted, looked at and evaluated everything I have gathered so far. The result is a ROUGHLY sorted pack of the current state. Important:

- I sorted the levels into 7 ranks for now. The rank ammount is not final!
- The ammount of level in each rank is not final!
- I have not included any music, but at the moment have also not changed any spefified tracks! They MOST LIKELY will change though!
- The levels are very roughly sorted by difficulty. This is by no means final and will be a main discussion point later on. I am willing to discuss major positrion changes of a level now, but as levels will still be added and positions are likely to changed anyway duw to new levels or a restructoring of the ranks only major misplacements will be considered for now!
- The current difficulty rating is based on the evaluation of the submitted intended solution replay that was send in by the author!
- If you find backroutes post them here + send them to the author as they need to fix them personally and then resubmit the level. If the author is no longer present I or a possible volunteer will take over.
- All levels are solvable and I posses a functional replay of the intended solution. I have also watched them all and I am not totally blind here anymore!
- I have excluded a very small amount of levels due to:
    A) Too many levels of an author being in an difficulty area and I want to avoid having like 10 levels of only one author in an area - in this case I excluded the "weaker" ones. I rather have more
authors involved as this is still a Community effort and I don't want half the pack/rank be "Icho" or "namida" levels for example.
We can still discuss about excluding/replacing certain levels because of this!
    B) Variations of a level being very similar to each other. In this case I took the "most interesting" one.
    C) Levels being a remake and VERY similar to the original.
- I have slightly changed a very very small amount of single levels due to:
    A) Backgrounds being so disorienting that the level is difficult to look at/play.
Be assured that I only take action in the more extreme cases here as I do want to preserve the author's work/spirit to highlight the different styles. At some point though actions should take
place due to general quality conrol though!

The current state of the pack:

- 135 total levels
- Considering a 7 rank distribution:
    - 23 rank 1 levels
    - 22 rank 2 levels
    - 21 rank 3 levels
    - 15 rank 4 levels
    - 20 rank 5 levels
    - 19 rank 6 levels
    - 15 rank 7 levels

What you can do now:

- Playtest the current levels to find backroutes
- Submit new levels and maybe take into consideration which difficulty section needs the most levels.
- Check if I have included the most recent version of your submission. If not ---> send me an update! (level+replay)
- Inform me about errors.
- Discuss serious misplacements of levels difficulty wise.
- Discuss a possible distribution of ranks and levels inside a rank.
- Discuss over exclusion or changes to already submitted levels. In this case the reasoning needs to be strong and involvement of the author in the discussion is highly appreciated. A simple "it's too hard" or "I don't like it" is not enough!

To submit levels (converted old ones and new ones):

You will have to send me:

- The level in the new NL format.

- A solving replay with the intended solution. (no replay - no submission)

- Any needed non-standard tileset. (if nessesary)

Music tracks are optional.

I want to make sure that even if an author goes away the intended solution doesn't get lost and therefore the level gets forgotten.
Also please try to resend levels or replays if they need changes in fututre NL versions. Check your levels, I would really appreciate that!

About logo, rank sign and graphical things:

Do not waste your time now and create something for the Alpha version!

Rank amounts will change and I won't simply include graphical things because you are the first to submit.
This will be tackled after we got ALL levels, came to a conclusion about rank amount and how many levels are inside ranks.
Then I will most likely create an extra topic where people can prepare and submit suggestion on which we will first discuss and give feedback on which the authors then can react. At the last step will will hold a vote.

In the end nothing is stopping you from replacing the end result anyway and customise. ;)

Let's talk music:

I won't include 150 songs for 150 levels as an example, that's simply not practical. You can however send me fitting music for levels. I will open a music discussion when we finished gathering so we can all come to a conclusion on the music tracks we will use. There is room for a few totally unique tracks in the pack though for some of the flashier levels or rank finishers.

My rough plan here is to gather a music collection sorted by theme for the pack. That means we will gather a few "spacey" tracks, a few "dark" or "melancolic" tacks, a few "happy" ones, a bunch of "general" type ones (you see that the themes can be quite broad),.....etc
This will have the result that we can most likely select a few fitting tracks for each type of level so that the track fits the theme of the level.
Again, I will most likely open an extra topic for this after the pack has all its levels. Then people can submit tacks and we can discuss which ones we include in the collection. Be aware that the tracks shoud at least fit the general theme of a lemmings game. An example would be that a track with lyric can be very distracting.

I am against a standard rotation though as I this will most likely result in levels having very unfitting tracks at times, or our tracks have to be VERY general without much of a mood.

NeoLemmix Levels / [NeoLemmix] Lemmings United [Difficulty: Hard-Extreme]
« on: February 18, 2019, 08:48:42 PM »
Over 3 years in development and it's finally here: Lemmings United!

1.) Download Links:

Lemmings United (V 13.2 ~ 540 KB): Lemmings United V 13.2

Contains the level pack in the newest version!

Lemmings United Music (~ 153 MB) : Lemmings United Music

Contains the music tracks! Extract all the tracks into the "music" folder of your NeoLemmix player. If the player does not have a "music" folder yet, create one in the same folder where the player is located.

To update you only need to redownload + replace the files of the previous version. The music only needs to be downloaded + configurated on your first download!

2.) Installation:

1. Get a NeoLemmix player from: https://www.neolemmix.com/  and extract it into a folder of your choice (if you already have an up-to-date player you can skip this step)
Also make sure you got all the styles that are linked in the player section there as well and extract them into your player's "styles" folder. The pack uses some non-standard tilesets and
    therefore needs the collection.
2. Unzip "Lemmings_United.zip" into the main folder of your Neolemmix player.  ../levels/Lemmings_United should exist now.
3. Extract all the music files from "United_Music.zip" into the "music" folder of your NeoLemmix player. If the player does not have a "music" folder yet, create one in the same folder where the player is located.
4. Run "NeoLemmix.exe" and press F2 in the main menu so you can access the pack through the level browser.
5. Inform yourself about the basics, new NeoLemmix features and hotkeys with the manual: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=4081.0
6. Enjoy!

3.) Ratings:

Pacifism

Island Of Dreams:

Here we start things of with a quick introduction followed by some simple puzzles. This should not be too hard for most people, but especially at the rank's end where I start to introduce some sneaky tricks you will need to start your thinking engine. ;)

Neutrality

Revenants:

More advanced tricks and more combinations of tricks await you here. You skills will start to be tested seriously now and you may even need to learn a few new tricks.

Tension

My Little Lemmagotchi:

Things start to get really difficult at this point. Even though there will be some breathers here and there, you must release all puzzling power that you have to make it through here. Already learned tricks might also resurface in a more unobvious environments and it is very likely that you will discover new tricks for your arsenal. I have learned quite a variety of tricks in my Lemmings history and by reaching this rank you prove to be a worthy test subject.

War

Kraft Und Licht:

Now I really want to see the steam come out of your head! Very complex skill combinations and unobvious behaviors will be required to survive (all while still being fair of course). Can you get through the onslaught of tough levels, or will you give up?

Genocide

Gate To The Inner Sanctum:

No more prisoners! It seems like I will need to release everything in terms of tricks and skills that I've learned on you! There is no more mercy! Face the puzzle nightmares I've prepared for you and you may make it in the end!:devil::devil::devil::devil::devil::devil::devil:

Bonus

The Adventures of Lemdiana Jones:

Here I gathered and roughly sorted in terms of difficulty all the additional contest, collaboration and single levels I've made during development. Enjoy this little extra!

Contests / Level of the Year 2018: Playing Phase
« on: February 18, 2019, 05:24:26 PM »
Alright, so nominations are now closed. Before we open the voting, we first offer a period to play the levels again, to familiarize yourself with those you haven't yet played and review those you have.

The list of nominated levels can be found in the nominations topic, I see no need to duplicate it here. It also contains information on where to find these levels.

Download links:

- Levelpack of all but 1 nominated levels.

Every author with 2 or more levels in this category gets an own rank in the pack. At the end there is a mixed rank for the leftover levels. Put the pack's folder in the "levels" folder of your NeoLemmix player.

- Needed special tilesets and soundfiles

This archive contains all needed special tilesets for the pack. Without them some levels won't load! Put the tileset folders in the "styles" folder and the ".wav" files in the "sound" folder of your NeoLemmix player.

- Music tacks

The custom music tacks of the nominated levels. Put the music files in the "music" folder of your NeoLemmix player.

- Replay collection

Some gathered replays from a few of the nominated levels. As this was optional, only a part of the pack is covered here.

Level not included in the pack:

- bulletride's Medusa

As no conversion of the level and the custom tileset was provided by the author. I know that the level should be convertable though. It can be accessed through the old contest topic the level took part in. You will need an old format NL player though.

Playing phase will end: March 21th 2019

General level feedback and solution replays can be posted here in the topic if you want! Have fun playing! :)

If there are any errors I've made in the collection, don't hesitate to inform me here!

Okay, so, by now most of you know how voting works.

Just as a quick guide for those who are new to the contests - the voting is broken into rounds, and each round you're allowed to vote for up to a certain number of levels. Votes are for the levels that you want to stay in the contest, not for levels you want to be removed. Just to be clear, you are allowed to vote for fewer levels than the permitted amount, and you are allowed to vote for your own levels. Generally, the number of levels that qualify for the next round will be the same as the number of levels that each user is allowed to vote for. The results so far are only visible once either the voting closes or you've already voted.

Please remember that discussing the levels anywhere on the forums (except private message) is not allowed while the voting phase is in progress, even if the level in question is not in the current round, even between rounds. However, it is okay to discuss levels that have already been eliminated. This rule does not extend to anything off-site, so you can eg. continue posting Youtube videos of your playthroughs, discuss in IRC chat, just don't draw attention to them on the forums.

There'll be voteoffs for each rule, to get down to one/two/three remaining levels each. After this, all qualifying levels will go into a mixed voteoff.

All levels are still avialable in the discussion topic: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=4091.0
